Arthur B. Hess
ABINGDON -- Arthur B. Hess, 83, of 19604 Saturn Drive, formerly of Venia, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was born in Venia, a son of the late E.P. and Venia Harris Hess, and lived in Abingdon for the past eight years, moving from Venia. He attended Solid Rock Baptist Church in Abingdon, was a retired coal miner from Island Creek Coal Co. and a farmer. He was a member of the UMWA and Buchanan County Agriculture Committee, where he served as chairman for several years.
Surviving are his wife, Mae Lambert Hess; two daughters, Mrs. Eugene (Trula) Austin of Venia and Mrs. Dee (Dianna) Howard of Fletcher Ridge, Va.; four sisters, Hazel Combs, Dollie Austin and Mint McGlothlin, all of Venia, and Ruth Hughes of
Johnson City; a brother, Ralph C. Hess of Lebanon; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Billy Hawkins, Clyde Lambert and Benny Harris will officiate. Burial will be in Austin Cemetery in Venia.
Mr. Hess was also preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Gail Hess; a son, Gregory Lee Hess; a sister, Edith James; and three brothers, Howard Hess, Jonah Hess and Earl C. Hess.
Pallbearers will be Dallas James, Clinton Hess, Roger Combs, Delmer Hess, Dayton Hughes, Clifford Hess, Gerald Hess, Theodore Mcglothlin and David Sweet. Honorary pallbearers will be Darrell James, Sam Hess, Lowell Hess, Ricky Hess, Kermit Keen and Keith McGlothlin.
Friends may call any time prior to the funeral hour Wednesday in Honaker Funeral Home.
Mary Ellen Hill
ELMHURST, Ill. -- Mary Hill, 60, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Dickenson County, a daughter of the late Douglas and Gracie Sutherland Barton. She was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her husband, Calvin Hill; a son, Calvin Hill Jr. of McHenry, Ill.; two daughters, Sharon Hill of Elmhurst and Lisa Stemple of Wheaton, Ill.; a brother, Linden Barton of Hansonville, Va.; three sisters, Katheryn Bostic of Council, Va., Ebbie Boyd of Bee, Va., and Joann Hill of Haysi; a grandson; and a granddaughter.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Danny Sluss and Finas Hill will officiate. Burial will be in Hill-Bartley Cemetery, Route 1, Haysi.
Mrs. Hill was also preceded in death by a son, Rick L. Hill; and brothers and sisters.
Among survivors are grandson, Corey Hill; and granddaughter, Jessica Stemple.
Pallbearers will be friends.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday in the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m.

William L. Houser
William Lee "Bill" Houser, 71, of 105 Kingsolver St., Bristol, Va., died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He lived most of his life in the Bristol area, was a son of the late Joe and Mary Houser, and was a former mechanic with Purity Bakers.
Surviving are his wife, Bertha Frances Houser; a stepdaughter, Carolyn Roden of Bluff City; a stepson, Charles F. Nelson of Indiana; three brothers, George Houser of Kingsport, Glen Houser of Tennessee, and Wayne Houser of North Carolina; two sisters, Ruth Chapman of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Olena Clark of Tennessee; three grandchildren; a great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Mountain View Cemetery. The Rev. Samuel Saunders will officiate. military honors will be by VFW Patton Crosswhite Post 6975.
Among survivors are several aunts.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Weaver Funeral Home.
Evelyn B. Keith
Funeral services for Evelyn B. Keith will be conducted Monday at 1 p.m. at the graveside in Glenwood Cemetery. The Rev. John W. Farmer will officiate.
Mrs. Keith, 93, of Bristol Tennessee, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at her home.

Mr. Kilgore, 82, of the Fork Bottom Section, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in Dickenson County Medical Center.

Lela Rankin Lilley, 69, of Bristol Tennessee, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a retired employee of Hammond Organ Co. She was a member of West Hills Christian Church and the Womens Circle.
Surviving are her husband, Bob Lilley; a sister, Fern Vaughan of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, John Rankin Jr. of Kingsport; a stepsister, Shelia Wendel of Tampa, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Gary Knapp and Andrew Gill, ministers, will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Mabe, 66, of 418 Shafer Lane, formerly of Richlands, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in a Roanoke hospital.

James E. Messick
RAVEN, Va. -- James E. Messick, 58, of the Fork Ridge section, died Saturday, Jan. 8, 2000, in a Richlands hospital.
He was born in Tazewell County, Va., a son of Mamie Stilwell Messick of Raven and the late Townsel "T.H." Messick. He lived in the Raven area all of his life and was a retired self-employed truck driver. He was of the Pentecostal faith.
Surviving, besides his mother, are his wife, Margaret Ann Howard Messick; a daughter, Palma Messick of the home; and a brother, B.H. "Bill" Messick of Richlands.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 3 p.m. in Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands. The Revs. Jessie Miller and Eddie Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Va.
