Alice L. Vail

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. -- Alice Longenecker Vail, 80, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, in Asbury Acres in Maryville, Tenn.
She was born in the Belgian Congo, a daughter of the late Rev. Jay Hershey Longenecker and Minnie Haulhart Longenecker, Presbyterian missionaries. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Morristown and the widow of the Rev. John B. Vail.
She graduated from Central School at Lubondai, Belgian Congo, Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., and Johns Hopkins with a nurse anesthetist degree. In 1945, she returned to the Belgian Congo as a Presbyterian missionary. She practiced and taught nursing there until 1959. She had lived in Morristown until 1993, where she was employed as a registered nurse.
Surviving are a son, Stephen H. Vail of Caryville; a sister, Mrs. Joe B. (Dorothy) Hopper of Black Mountain, N.C.; a brother, the Rev. Hershey J. Longenecker of Pulaski, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday in Morristown.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to First Presbyterian Church of Morristown.
Mayes Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.

Euell W. Warren

Funeral services for Euell William "Bill" Warren will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Glenwood Mausoleum Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Eggers will officiate.
Mr. Warren, 73, of Bristol Tennessee, died Sunday, Jan. 9, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Akard Wyatt

Akard Wyatt, 76, of 305 Corpus Christi Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and a daughter of the late Hugh T. and Mollie Gentry Flick. She was a retired employee from Univac and a member of Lynwood Bible Church. She attended Tennessee Avenue Baptist Church and was the widow of Hubert Warren Wyatt. She was a member of the Virginia Parks and Recreation Senior Choir.
Surviving are a daughter, Nancy Patrick of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Larry Couch of Simpsonville, S.C.; a stepdaughter, Susie Bass of Interlocken, Fla.; a stepson, Steve Wyatt of Andalusia, Ala.; four sisters, Virginia Allison, Elizabeth Allison, Marie Wilson and Charlotte Boyd, all of Bristol Tennessee; three brothers, Oscar Flick of Covington, Ind., Ople Flick of Nashville and Everette Flick of Bristol Tennessee; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. at the graveside in National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn. The Rev. Clarence Lewis will officiate.
Mrs. Wyatt was also preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tammy Couch.
Among survivors are uncle Tommy Gentry; grandchildren Sherry Musick, Lisa Williams, Scott Patrick, Kristi Wyatt and Duane Venable; and great-grandchildren Megan and Carson and Shawn Paul and Devon; and a special friend Richard Lowe.
Mrs. Wyatt was active in the Virginia Parks and Recreation Senior Choir, where she played parts as Minnie Pearl, Santa Claus and Dolly from Broadway. She loved to travel and had visited Alaska, Israel, Egypt, England, Nova Scotia, Hawaii and Africa. In addition, she took part in a wagon train to California in March 1979.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Gideons or Wellmont Hospice House, 180 Steele's Road, Bristol, Tenn.

Walter S. Ahern Sr.

KINGSPORT -- Walter S. Ahern Sr., 68, of 732 Liberty Church Road, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Chicago, a son of the late Walter and Euthropia Ahern. He had lived in Kingsport for the past 30 years. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran with 20 years of service and retired from ITT North Electric in Gray and from Norris Industries in Duffield, Va. He was a member of American Legion Hammond Post 3 and Saint Dominic Catholic Church. He was past president of Gray Optimist Club and past president of Gray Community Chest.
Surviving are his wife, Doris Lane Ahern; three daughters, Luanna Lantz, Nora Broyles, both of Blountville, and Susan Greene of Lacy, Wash.; three sons, Walter S. Ahern Jr. of Gray, Andrew Ahern of the home and Dale Ahern of Indiana; four grandchildren; two nephews; and a niece.
Services will be conducted Saturday at 7 p.m. in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Charles Burton and John W. Farmer will officiate. It was Mr. Ahern's request to be cremated. A family graveside service will be conducted in the National Cemetery in Mountain Home, Tenn., at a later date.
Mr. Ahern was also preceded in death by a brother, Edward Ahern.
Among survivors are sons-in-law Randy Lantz and Mike Broyles, both of Blountville, and Joe Greene of Lacy; daughter-in-law Yissel Ahern of Gray; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and John Adair of Bristol Virginia; and sister-in-law, Mary Ahern of Elmhurst, Ill.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.

Bobby Atkins

MARION -- Funeral services for Bobby Atkins will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Barnett's Marion Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Neville Mozingo and Mike Sage will officiate. Burial will be in Thomas Cemetery with full military honors by Francis Marion VFW Post 4667.
Mr. Atkins, 68, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
He was born in Beckley, W.Va. He was an armed forces veteran, serving four years with the U.S. Marines and eight years with the U.S. Air Force. He was employed for 17 years as a coal miner.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Ferguson Atkins; a daughter, Deborah Moses Tidwell of Springfield; a brother, Julius Atkins of Beckley; a sister, Joanne Knuckles of Beckley; and several nieces and nephews.
Among survivors are son-in-law John Tidwell of Springfield and granddaughter Courtney Tidwell of Springfield.
Barnett's Marion Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jim S. Buchanan

MARION -- Funeral services for Jim Spiller Buchanan will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Bradley's Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Kingery will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Buchanan, 99, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital.
Among survivors is son-in-law Park Tudor of Marion.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Bradley's Funeral Home.

William S. Campbell

HYDE PARK, Vt. -- William Scott Campbell, 89, formerly of Saltville, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at his home.
He was a son of the late Jake and Alice Campbell and retired from Bendix Aviation.
Surviving are his wife, Louise Campbell; a sister, Margie Caywood; a niece; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be in Binghamton, N.Y.

Nicholas Conti

CEDAR BLUFF -- Nicholas "Nick" Conti, 90, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Rosario, Argentina, a son of the late Michael Angelo and Rosa Peraino Conti, both of Baltimore. He was a member of Boumi Shrine Temple in Baltimore and a retired chef.
Surviving are his wife, Elizabeth Conti; a son, Michael Conti of Annapolis, Md.; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ronnie (Jennie) Whitt of Bristol Virginia; a stepson, Jimmy Bane of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; two granddaughters; three grandsons; three step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery in Tazewell. The Rev. Tom Collins will officiate.
Mr. Conti was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lawrence Conti, Amrosia Conti and Sam Conti; and a sister, Vincenta Bova.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Nora Conti of Annapolis; stepdaughter-in-law JoAnn Bane of Murfreesboro; granddaughters Barbara Evans and Virginia Ann McCready; grandsons Michael Conti Jr., Thomas Conti and Robert Conti; step-grandchildren Kayla Thompson, Carla Thompson and Nolan Bane; and great-grandchildren Rachael McCready, Bradley McCready, Christopher Evans, Lisa Conti, Lenora Conti and Thomas Conti.
There will not be a visitation in the funeral home. The family may be contacted at 516 Bellehaven Drive, Bristol, Va.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1599 Clifton Road Northeast, Atlanta, GA 30329.
Singleton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Eva Janet Cox

BIG STONE GAP -- Eva Janet Cox, 93, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, in Heritage Hall Health Care in Big Stone Gap.
She was a lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap and the widow of Roscoe Dexter Cox. She and her husband owned and operated Lonesome Pine Apartments and Trailer Park in Big Stone Gap for many years.
Surviving are two sons, E. Marvin Cox of Dayton, Ohio, and Dean O. Cox of Lomax, Ala.; four daughters, Charlene C. Cozart and Patricia K. Howard, both of Fairfax Station, Fern E. Crawley of Big Stone Gap and Jewell B. Leonard of Dayton; 14 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church on Wood Avenue in Big Stone Gap by Holding Funeral Home. The Rev. Rick Lancaster will officiate. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap.
Mrs. Cox was also preceded in death by a son, Austin E. Cox.
Among survivors are a host of friends.
Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the church.
Holding Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
