Betty Lou Blevins

APPALACHIA -- Funeral services for Betty Lou Blevins will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Gilliam Funeral Home at Big Stone Gap. Dr. George Aichel will officiate. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery at Big Stone Gap.
Mrs. Blevins, 74, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at her home.
She lived most of her life in Appalachia, was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Appalachia and graduated from Hiwassee College in Madisonville, Tenn. She was a bookkeeper for Cody Equipment and later employed with Quality Food in Appalachia. She was a member of Gladville Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star.
Surviving are her husband, Herman Lester Blevins; a son, Creig Blevins of Halifax; a daughter, Connie McAfee of Cincinnati; a brother, Jack D. Banner of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Daniel Blevins, Kevin Blevins, Emry Davidson, Eddie Mooneyhon and Don Farmer. Honorary pallbearers will be Hugh Wolfe, Bob Blevins, Don Mckinzie and H. Sharret.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Gilliam Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to American Cancer Society Mid Atlantic Division, P.O. Box 6359, Glen Allen, VA 23058, or Hospice Choice Inc., P.O. Box 349, Norton, VA 24273.

Vesta E. Booher

Graveside services for Vesta E. Booher will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Booher, 91, formerly of 101 Sheri Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol.
Weaver Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dora Cuddy

Dora Vernon Cuddy, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a daughter of the late C.J. and Vannie Scott Vernon. She was the widow of Carl C. Cuddy and a long-time employee of the Salvation Army.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Hagy of Bristol Tennessee and Frances Simmons of Austin, Texas; a son, W.C. Cuddy of Blountville; a sister, Mildred Ward of Bristol Tennessee; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The Revs. John Thrasher and Dennis Burnette will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Cuddy was also preceded in death by a daughter, Canille Cuddy; and five sons, J.L. Vernon, William Cuddy, Carl "Buck" Cuddy II, David Cuddy and John "Mouse" Cuddy.
Pallbearers will be John Vernon, Bill Curtis, Eric Cuddy, Wayne Potts, Greg Johnson, Randy Moore, Mike Sneed and John Walden.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Oakley-Cook Funeral Home.

Claude Eads

DERBY, Va. -- Funeral services for Claude N. "Homebrew" Eads will be conducted Thursday at 7 p.m. in Gilliam Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Homer Salyer and Jack Sturgill will officiate. Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. American Legion Cemetery in Big Stone Gap. Those attending should assemble at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
Mr. Eads, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Derby and a member of Derby Methodist Church. He was employed with Stonega Coal & Coke//Westmoreland Coal Co. for 47 years and was a member of UMWA Local 7276.
Surviving are two sons, Melvyn Eads of Derby and Jimmy Doyle of Kingsport; a daughter, Una Fay Ford of Big Stone Gap; two sisters, Pebble Kinsler of Stonega and Ada Boyd of Andover; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Eads was preceded in death by a son, Howard Doyle; and a sister, Iona Salyer.
He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday in Gilliam Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Derby United Methodist Church, c//o Shirley Estridge, Appalachia, Va.

Alta H. Fields

LEBANON -- Funeral services for Alta H. Fields will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Russell County Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Fred Minnick will officiate. Entombment will be in Ketron Memorial Mausoleum.
Mrs. Fields, 78, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Russell County Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be Kendall Fields, Doyle Fields, Jerry Fields, Randy Herndon, Robbie Herndon, Bill Sam Price, Harry Ferguson Jr., Billy J. Rhea and Kenneth Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Dwight Bailey, John Boardwine, Bill Akers, Billy Dean Fields, Carter Ferguson and Claude Robert Taylor.
Russell County Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith D. Hale

Funeral services for Edith Darter Hale will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Fred Dearing will officiate. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Hale, 89, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. before the service Friday in Blevins Funeral Home.

William J. Hart

ABINGDON -- William J. Hart, 70, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was a resident at the Greendale Home for the Aged.
There are no known family members surviving.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 1:30 p.m. in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
There will be no visitation in the funeral home.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Olivia B. Helvey

Johnson CITY -- Olivia Bowman Helvey, 87, of 497 Carroll Creek Road died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center.
She was born in Tonopah, Nev., a daughter of the late William Miller and Maude Sanders Bowman. She had lived in the Boones Creek community since 1917. She graduated from Emory & Henry College in 1935 and taught in elementary and junior high school for more than 37 years including seventh and eighth grades at Boones Creek in Washington County and first and second grades in Sullivan County at Mountain View and Bluff City Elementary schools.
She was a member of Austin Springs United Methodist Church, where she taught several classes and held positions throughout her lifetime. She participated in Washington and Sullivan County Retired Teachers Associations, Holston Community and Piney Flats Senior Citizens clubs, Emory & Henry Alumni Association and Boones Creek Historical Trust. She was the widow of Thomas M. Helvey.
Surviving are a son, Robert Helvey of Johnson City; a daughter, Mary Ella Poteat of Johnson City; a granddaughter, Rachel Helvey of Johnson City; and a grandson, Jason Poteat of Nashville.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 8 p.m. in East Chapel of Appalachian Funeral Home. The Rev. Keith Moore will officiate. Graveside services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. in Monte Vista Burial Park. Those planning to attend the graveside services are asked to meet at the funeral home by 1:30 p.m. to proceed to the cemetery.
Pallbearers, who are requested to meet at the funeral home by 7:45 p.m. Friday, will be Billy Lee Carter, Charles Oliver, Robert Dunn, George Boy, Robbie Boy, Chris Boy, Doug Dunn and Sam Brumit.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Appalachian Funeral Home Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Austin Springs United Methodist Church, 726 Austin Springs Road, Johnson City, TN 37601.

James C. Mabe

MARION -- James Cecil "J.C." Mabe, 70. died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in Saint Peter's Hospital in Albany, N.Y.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Seaver- Brown Funeral Service.

Darrell M. Martin

TOPEKA, Kan. -- Darrell M. Martin, 74, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 1999, in a Topeka Nursing Home.
He was born in Trammel, Va., a son of the late Rhuel and Pearl Martin, and was the widower of Bennie Arnold.
Surviving are a son; two sisters, June Humphrey of Abingdon and Beryl Rasnick of Detroit; and a grandchild.
Penwell-Gabel Mid-Town Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Jennie T. Quillen

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Jennie Tate Quillen, 82, of 3520 Farmington Drive, Apt. B, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, in Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro.
She was born in Crackers Neck, Va., a daughter of the late Mary and Robert B. Tate. She had lived in Greensboro since 1983. She was a graduate of East Stone Gap High School and attended Roanoke Business College. She had been employed with the federal government and Central Supply Co. in Virginia.
She was a member of East Stone Gap United Methodist Church and Trinity United Methodist Church in Big Stone Gap. Since moving to Greensboro, she was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women.
Surviving are her husband, Paul B. Quillen; a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Claywell of Greensboro; three grandchildren, Traci Elizabeth Claywell of Beaufort, N.C., and Christopher Doyle Claywell and Brett Quillen Claywell, both of Greensboro; a niece; several great-nieces; and several great-great-nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Glencoe Cemetery in Big Stone Gap. The Rev. Hugh Bowers will officiate.
Mrs. Quillen was also preceded in death by two sisters, Stella Tate Witt and Reland Tate Gilly; a brother, Ray Tate; and a niece, Betty Wentz Tate.
Among survivors are son-in-law Doyle Claywell of Greensboro and niece Phyllis Tate Galloway of Big Stone Gap.
On March 4, 1939, she married Paul B. Quillen in Middlesboro, Ky., and they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 1999 with family. Her loving and Christian presence will be missed by her beloved husband.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Holding Funeral Home.
