Etta Ray

OAKWOOD, Va. -- Funeral services for Etta Ray will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel in Grundy. Pastor Gerald K. Lester and evangelist Peerman Lester will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock.
Mrs. Ray, 72, of the Dismal section of Buchanan County, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2000, in Buchanan General Hospital in Grundy.
Pallbearers will be Peck Ray, David Hagerman, Leslie Damron, Wendall Damron, Gerald Collins and Noah Newsome. Honorary pallbearers will be Feddie Newsome, Robert Damron and James Samuel Ray.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mary M. Rhymer

Mary Magdaline Moore Rhymer, 70, of 106 Basswood Drive, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in Bristol Nursing Home.
She was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, Tenn., and a former employee of North Electric and Facet Inc. of Bristol Virginia with several years of service. She was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her husband, Robert L. Rhymer; a daughter, Mrs. Phillip (Linda) Tranum of Bristol Tennessee; two sons, Terry Rhymer of Bristol Tennessee and Randy Rhymer of Columbia, S.C.; six sisters, Virginia Trammell, Bessie Thompson, Beulah Bent, Doris Hutton, Nora Worley and Brenda Lingerfelt, all of Bristol; a brother, Donald Moore of Bristol; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Jess Neal and Lawrence Stout will officiate. Graveside services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in Rooty Branch Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Hutton, Guy Hall, Travis Hall, Ken Davis, Mike Rutter, Darrell Worley and Paul Thompson.
Special thanks to the First Virginia section of Bristol Nursing Home.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday before chapel service in Weaver Funeral Home.

Virginia C. Rouse

Virginia Louise "Lou" Callahan Rouse, of 110 Rouse Private Drive, VI Ranch Road, Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Jan. 19. 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House.
She was a daughter of the late George and Addie Callahan, a former secretary and of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are her husband, Harold Rouse; two daughters, Terri Smith and Lisa Rouse, both of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Chris Rouse of Blountville; two sisters, Bonnie Rogers and Callie Campbell, both of Bristol Tennessee; three brothers, Homer Callahan and Floyd Callahan, both of Bristol Tennessee and Burt Callahan of Blountville; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11 a.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Tim Rouse will officiate. Burial will be in Rooty Branch Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Travis Sheppard, Danny Peters, Fred Herndon, Bill Skeens, Wayne Rouse and Jack Crusenberry. Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Morrell, Jim Peters, Jack Dingus, Dave Brown, Tony Almany and Bob Slaughter.
Special thanks to Dr. Sue Prill for her sincere compassion and warmth.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home.

Lena R. Sharpe

ABINGDON -- Funeral services for Lena Bee Ray Sharpe will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. H.G. Musick Jr. will officiate. Burial will be in Ketron Memorial Gardens in Lebanon.
Mrs. Sharpe, 65, formerly of Honaker, died Tuesday, Jan., 18, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was born in Russell County, a daughter of the late Toy and Lena Harris Ray. She had lived in Abingdon for the past three years, moving there from Honaker. She was of the Baptist faith and the widow of Guy W. Sharpe.
Surviving are a daughter, Aleda Nash of Lebanon; three sons, Gerald Nash of Castlewood, Dwight "Ike" Nash of Honaker and Wayne Sharpe of Summerville, S.C.; a sister, Gladys Hickock of Tennessee; and 11 grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be relatives and friends.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Thursday in Honaker Funeral Home.

Ray M. Steele

NORWOOD, Ohio -- Ray M. Steele, 69, of 426 Bell St. died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his home.
He was a son of the late John H. and Florence Steele. He was retired from General Motors, a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Norwood and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Steele; a sister, Helen Burns of Bristol Tennessee; a brother, Paul Steele of Bristol Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. Dr. Kyle Barr will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday in Weaver Funeral Home.

Conley Collins

BLOUNTVILLE -- Conley Collins, 78, died Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Blountville, a son of the late Fuller and Texanna Malone Collins. He was a lifelong resident of Sullivan County, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Sullivan County Highway Department. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mabel Rupe Collins; a daughter, Brenda Keith of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Steve Collins of the home; a sister, Novella Godsey Miller of Blountville; two brothers, W.T. Collins of Blountville and J.C. Collins of Marion, N.C.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in New Hope Cemetery by Blountville Funeral Home. The Rev. Woodrow Morrell will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in Blountville Funeral Home.

Dora Cuddy

Funeral services for Dora Belle Vernon Cuddy will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Paul Cook Memorial Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The Revs. John Thrasher and Dennis Burnette will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
Mrs. Cuddy, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, in NHC Healthcare of Bristol.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a daughter of the late C.J. and Vannie Scott Vernon. She was the widow of Carl C. Cuddy and a long-time employee of the Salvation Army.
Surviving are two daughters, Virginia Hagy of Bristol Tennessee and Frances Simmons of Austin, Texas; a son, W.C. Cuddy of Bluff City; a sister, Mildred Ward of Bristol Tennessee; 19 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cuddy was also preceded in death by a daughter, Canille Cuddy; and five sons, J.L. Vernon, William Curtis, Carl "Buck" Cuddy II, David Cuddy and John "Mouse" Cuddy.
Pallbearers will be John Vernon, Bill Curtis, Eric Cuddy, Wayne Potts, Greg Johnson, Randy Moore, Mike Sneed and John Walden.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Claude Eads

DERBY, Va. -- Graveside services for Claude N. "Homebrew" Eads will be Friday at 11 a.m. in American Legion Cemetery at Big Stone Gap. Those attending should assemble at the cemetery at 10:45 a.m.
Mr. Eads, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Derby and a member of Derby Methodist Church. He was employed with Stonega Coal & Coke//Westmoreland Coal Co. for 47 years and was a member of UMWA Local 7276.
Surviving are his wife, Mable Tipton Eads; two sons, Melvyn Eads of Derby and Jimmy Doyle of Kingsport; a daughter, Una Fay Ford of Big Stone Gap; two sisters, Pebble Kinsler of Stonega and Ada Boyd of Andover; 11 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Eads was preceded in death by a son, Howard Doyle; and a sister, Iona Salyer.
He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Derby United Methodist Church, c//o Shirley Estridge, Appalachia, Va.
Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Edith D. Hale

Funeral services for Edith Darter Hale will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Blevins Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Fred Dearing will officiate. Burial will be private.
Mrs. Hale, 89, of Bristol Tennessee, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a daughter of the late Lloyd and Eva Faust Darter. She was a graduate of Wesleyan College in Macon, Ga., a retired school teacher from Bristol Virginia School System and a member of State Street United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her husband, S. Douglas Hale; three daughters, Elizabeth "Betsy" Hale of Marion; Dr. Sara Hale Henry of Hyattsville, Md., and Christine Hale of Tampa, Fla.; a sister, Mrs. John (Kathleen) Baker of Orlando, Fla.; a brother, Lloyd Darter of Chapel Hill, N.C.; and two grandchildren.
Among survivors are grandchildren Jackie Amis and Douglas Amis.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. before the service Friday in Blevins Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to State Street United Methodist Church for Programs for Children and Handicapped Persons, or to the Association for Retarded Citizens, National Headquarters, Silver Spring, MD.
