Virgil Nunley

TAZEWELL, Va. -- Virgil Nunley, 75, formerly of Richlands, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in a Bluefield, W.Va., hospital.
He was born in Tazewell County, a son of the late Walter J. and Edna Mabel Riley Nunley.
Surviving is a son, Allen Nunley of Herndon.
Memorial services will be conducted Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Singleton Funeral Service in Cedar Bluff. The Rev. Gerald Stacy will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
Mr. Nunley was also preceded in death by a son, Benny Joe Nunley; and a brother, George "Buck" Nunley.
Among survivors is an aunt, Mildred Ringstaff of Richlands.
Singleton Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Naomi D. O'Dell

Naomi D. O'Dell, 92, of 621 Vance St., Bristol, Va., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
She was born in Scott County, Va., and had lived in the Bristol area all of her life. She was a former employee of Big Jack Manufacturing and of the Baptist faith. She was the widow of Paris V. O'Dell.
Surviving are four daughters, Glenna Cross and Marcella Mullins, both of Bristol Tennessee, and Jean Harless and Judy Hastie, both of Bristol Virginia; two sons, Paris V. O'Dell Jr. and Fred A. O'Dell, both of Bristol Virginia; three sisters, Eva Houser of Bristol Virginia, and Hazel Bales and Sylvia Rutter, both of Bristol Tennessee; 29 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; and 11 great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Lester MacKinnon and E.W. Ely will officiate. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Susong Cemetery.
Mrs. O'Dell was preceded in death by six children.
Honorary pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Tuesday before the chapel service in Weaver Funeral Home.

Pinkie J. Robinson

SOUTH POINT, Ohio -- Pinkie Jane Robinson, 90, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in an Ohio nursing home.
She was born in Buchanan County, Va., a daughter of the late George and Dora Epling Hurley, both Buchanan County natives. She lived in Lake City, Fla., for several years moving to South Point 17 years ago.
She was a former welder for the Baltimore shipyard, a member of the Assembly of God and the widow of John B. Robinson.
Surviving are a son, Mack Rife of Steelesburg, Va.; five grandchildren, Brenda Wiseman, Sue Liddle, Marie Bates, Tommy Rife and Shirley Buchanan; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum in Claypool Hill, Va., by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands. Elders Tom Shifflett and Keith Matney will officiate.
Mrs. Robinson was also preceded in death by a daughter, Erma Nell Childress; four sisters; and four brothers.
Among survivors is daughter-in-law, Clara Rife of Steelesburg.
The family will receive friends at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greenhills Memory Gardens Mausoleum before the 2 p.m. graveside service.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Monroe B. Thrower Sr.

NORTON -- Monroe B. Thrower Sr., 81, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon.
He was born in Red Springs, N.C. and was a graduate of the University of North Carolina. He came to Norton in the late 1940s, where he founded the accounting firm of Thrower, Livesay and Blanton. He continued as senior partner with the firm.
He was a member of American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and Virginia Society of Certified Public Accounts. He was a retired secretary//treasurer of Kline Foundation and served as a director of the former Wise County National Bank.
He was a 50-year member and past president of the Kiwanis Club of Norton and a member of Norton Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder and deacon.
Surviving are his wife, Hazel Wolfe Thrower; two sons, Bardin Thrower Jr. of Norton and John Thrower of Austin, Texas; a daughter, Susan Cale of Harrisonburg, Va.; a brother, John J. Thrower of Red Springs; and eight grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Norton Presbyterian Church by Hagy Funeral Home. Dr. Miller Liston will officiate. Burial will be in Powell Valley Memorial Gardens.
Among survivors are daughters-in-law, Eleanor Thrower of Norton and Kimberly Thrower of Austin; and son-in-law, Dr. William Cale of Harrisonburg.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Hagy Funeral Home.

Charles R. Wallace

GRUNDY -- Funeral services for Charles Ralph Wallace will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Willard Owens will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock with full military rites by American Legion Post 164 of Grundy.
Mr. Wallace, 51, of Route 1, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be Tommy Hall, Donnie Hall, Delmer Hall, Kenny Hall, Lee Altizer, Billy Altizer, Ronald Coleman, David Clevinger and Gary Coleman. Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Altizer, Garnie Sykes, Allen Anderson, William Hammonds, Benny Hammons, and deacons and Adult Men Sunday School Class of Harman Memorial Baptist Church.
Shortridge-Ramey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

John W. Wright Sr.

KINGSPORT -- John William Wright Sr., 66, of 1220 Kingston Court, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, in Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center.
He was born in Bristol Virginia, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W.R. Wright, and lived in Kingsport since 1965. He was a graduate of Virginia High, Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, N.C., and East Tennessee State University with a bachelor of science degree.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, serving as a staff sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division and as an advisor to Vietnam.
He was a member of Indian Springs Optimist Club, a TSSAA referee for 30 years, and a referee for the Parks and Recreation City League, officiating football, softball, basketball and baseball.
He attended Colonial Heights Christian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Norma L. Wright; a daughter, Julie Short of Kingsport; a granddaughter, Lauren Elizabeth Short of Kingsport; a niece; and a nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home Chapel. Tom Lohr and Richard Carpenter, ministers, will officiate. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Oak Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites by American Legion Hammond Post 3.
Mr. Wright was also preceded in death by a son, John William Wright Jr.; and a sister, Marie Brooks.
Among survivors are son-in-law, Eric Short of Kingsport; niece, Betty Jo Wissler of Waynesboro, Va.; and nephew, David Wayne Brooks of Roanoke.
Mr. Wright was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed.
The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday in Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown.

Fannie Akers

NORTON -- Fannie Akers, 67, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of Fort Blackmore and Scott County and a daughter of the late Bill and Arlene Collins Guy. She had lived in Norton for six years and was the widow of Emmitte Akers.
Surviving are four daughters, Frances Robinette of Norton, Candy Begley of Fort Blackmore, Cathy Dockery of Clinchport and Peggy Hensley of Gate City; a son, Gary Akers of Dungannon; a sister, Bonnie Cook of Lebanon; three brothers, Grover Collins of Fort Blackmore, Charles Guy of Michigan and Willard Guy of Maryland; 22 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Estes Funeral Home Chapel in Coeburn. Joe Dearry will officiate. Burial will be in Boatwright Cemetery in Fort Blackmore.
Mrs. Akers was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carolyn Taylor; and a son, Benny "Bud" Akers.
The family will receive friends after 4 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday afternoon and evening in Estes Funeral Home.

Catherine M. Barker

Catherine M. "Kitty" Barker, of 1270 Volunteer Parkway, Bristol, Tenn., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Akard Funeral Home.

Gary Bolling

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Gary Bolling, 61, of Dal Maso died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach.
He was born in Pound, Va., and moved to the Daytona area in 1995 from Bluff City, Tenn. He was with the administrative staff of Southern Bell Telephone Co.
Surviving are his wife, Joan Bolling; a son, Scott Bolling of Hollywood, Fla.; a daughter, Debbie Dee of Daytona Beach; two brothers, J. Shelton Bolling of Pound and Clarence Sonny Bolling of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a sister, Betty C. Bailey of Bluff City; and a grandchild.
National Cremation Society of Daytona Beach was in charge of arrangements.

Willis J. Boshell

CEDAR BLUFF -- Willis J. "Bill" Boshell, 74, formerly of Kopperston, W.Va., died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, at his home.
He was born in Brilliant, Ala., a son of the late Walter and Ruth Tirey Boshell. He was a 1944 graduate of Oceana High School and a retired superintendent of Eastern Coal Co. in Kopperston with 43 years of service. He moved to Cedar Bluff in 1977 and started MABO Coal Co. until his retirement in 1985.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Geraldine T. Manning Boshell; three sons, Michael J. Boshell of Ceredo, W.Va., Mark M. Boshell of Atlanta and Willis Jay Boshell of Cedar Bluff; a brother, James Boshell of Point Pleasant, W.Va.; two grandchildren; and a niece.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley, W.Va., by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Richlands. The Rev. Coy Richardson will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Beckley.
Mr. Boshell was also preceded in death by a brother, Harry Boshell.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Linda Boshell of Ceredo; sisters-in-law Mary Boshell of Chiefland, Fla., and Dee Boshell of Point Pleasant; and grandchildren Michael David Boshell and Bill Hunter Boshell; and niece Bridget Boshell.
Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday in Hurst-Scott Funeral Home.
