Frank W. Cole

CHILHOWIE -- Funeral services for Frank Walter Cole will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Mountain View United Methodist Church by Williams Funeral Home. Mr. Cole's grandson, the Rev. Anthony Dean Cole, and pastor John H. Graham will officiate. The body will be taken to the church an hour before services. Burial will be in the church cemetery with graveside rites by Chilhowie Masonic Lodge 250 AF&AM.
Mr. Cole, 89, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Smyth County Community Hospital in Marion.
He was born in Washington County, Va., a son of the late James Albert Hugh and Eunice (Dolly) Edmondson Cole. He was the widower of Ada Blevins Cole. He retired from Olin Matheson in Saltville after 32 years of service. After retiring, he was a cattle trader and farmer. He was a member of Mountain View United Methodist Church and Chilhowie Masonic Lodge 250 AF&AM, receiving his 50-year pin in 1999.
Surviving are a son, Dr. Jack D. Cole of Abingdon; three grandchildren, James Albert Hugh "Jay" Cole II of Chilhowie, the Rev. Anthony Dean Cole of Oneida, Tenn., and Jennifer Deskins Keuls of Harrisonburg, Va.; five great-grandchildren, Robbie Phillips, Katie Cole, Amanda Cole, Sammy Cole and Quinton Keuls.
Pallbearers will be J.B. Haga, A.J. Miller Jr., H.L. Blevins, Wade Blevins, Jay Cole, Robbie Phillips, Mark Keuls and Billy Martin. Honorary pallbearers will be Leon Cole, Weaver Widner, Hubert Widner, Johnnie Cole, Rhet Sutherland, Johnny Berry and Tommy Widner.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Williams Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Mountain View United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1722, Chilhowie, VA 24319.

Arthur Clinton Dirlam Sr.

Funeral services for Arthur Clinton Dirlam Sr. will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Central Christian Church by Weaver Funeral Home. Dr. Dan McCall and the Revs. Sid Tiller and Ross Dampier will officiate. Burial will be in Shipley Cemetery.
Mr. Dirlam, 88, of 122 Churchill Circle, Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be David Dirlam, Garreth Dirlam, Curtis Nicholson, Armando Guzman, John Eric Dirlam and Kaleo Ching.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday in the church before the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Family Life Ministries, P.O. Box 513, Bristol, TN 37621, or Central Christian Church, 424 Melrose St., Bristol, TN 37620.

Charles E. Eaton

Funeral services for Charles Edward Eaton will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Don White will officiate. Burial will be in Johnson Cemetery.
Mr. Eaton, 50, of 615 Buckner St., Bristol, Va., died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at his home.
He was a lifelong resident of Bristol and a son of the late George W. Eaton Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Crusenberry Eaton. He was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving are two daughters, Kim and Lisa Roberts, both of Bristol Virginia; three sisters, Mary Sharrett, Linda Harless and Carolyn Eaton, all of Bristol Virginia; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Eaton was also preceded in death by a sister, Joyce Ann Eaton.
Pallbearers will be Tracy Harless, John Roberts, Conley Harless, Larry Wayne Crumley, Ray Roberts, Richard Ball and Brian Cunningham. Special thanks to Bessie Tinley and Richard Ball.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Weaver Funeral Home.

J. Edsel Farthing

FRANKLIN, N.C -- The Rev. J. Edsel Farthing, 84, of Watauga Church Road, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at his home.
He was born of Watauga County, a son of the late John Fredrick and Florence Etta Billings Farthing. He was the widower of Christine Sells Farthing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, U.S. Army and U.S. Marines, a retired minister and member of Emanuel Presbyterian Church of Franklin.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Jack (Sandra) Hedden of Franklin, Mrs. Robert (Helen) O'Neal of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Mrs. Larry (Paula) Brook of Sapphire, N.C.; a sister, Leondas Lipford of Elizabethton, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Abingdon Presbyterian Church by Farris Funeral Service. The Revs. Tom Holiday and Tom Sullivan will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Mr. Farthing was proudest of his service to God and his country.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service Thursday in the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Gideons International, P.O. Box 372, Franklin, NC 28744.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Paul J. Healy

Funeral services for Paul J. Healy will be conducted Wednesday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Laura Rasor will officiate. Graveside services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in Glenwood Cemetery with military honors by Patton-Crosswhite VFW Post 6975 of Bristol.
Mr. Healy, of 904 Florida Ave., Bristol, Tenn., died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Peoria, Ill., and had lived most of his life in the Bristol area. He retired from the Bristol Tennessee Police Department with 18 years of service and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975 of Bristol, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge.
Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Lucille Jones Healy; a son, Patrick J. "Pat" Healy of Bristol Virginia; and two grandchildren, Joe Healy and Jamie Healy.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Sheila Tabor Healy of Bristol Virginia and special friend Austin Corbin.
Pallbearers will be Larry Bolling, Tony Bolling, Kim Bolling, Withrow Jones Jr., Austin Corbin and Col. Jack E. Shepard. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Tom Green, Dr. Bennett Cowan, Dr. Anthony Broglio, Dr. Stephanie J. Powell, staff of Four West of Bristol Regional Medical Center and Bristol Nursing Home First, Virginia.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home or other times at the residence.

Mary E. Jackson

Funeral services for Mary Evelyn Jackson will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel in Abingdon. The Rev. Dennis Burnette will officiate. Burial will be in Greenfield Baptist Cemetery.
Ms. Jackson, 69, of 105 Chestnut St., Bristol, Tenn., died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol.
Pallbearers will be Chuck Stipes, Fred Roberts, Richard Russell, Steve Worley, Darrell Smith, Jeff Worley and Jody Jackson.
The family will receive friends after the service Wednesday at the home of Jeff Scott, 871 Wolf Creek Trail, Abingdon.
Farris Funeral Service is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy S. Jones

BRANDON, Fla. -- Funeral services for Dorothy Shell "Dot" Jones will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Chapel of Oakley-Cook Funeral Home. The Rev. Henry Linginfelter will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones, 83, a native of Bristol Tennessee, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Brandon.
Pallbearers will be Wiley Webb, Ron Rogers, Larry Rogers and Nick Graybeal. Honorary pallbearers will be J.P. Rogers, Charlie Graybeal, James Jones and Bernard Jones.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold B. Matney

HARMAN, Va. -- Harold Blaine Matney, 51, of the Belcher's Fork section, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000.
He was a lifelong resident of Buchanan County and a son of Joehene Edison Matney of Grundy and the late Mell Frances Cole Matney. He was a contract coal operator. He was a member of Harman Memorial Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and chairman of the deacons. He was a representative of New Lebanon Association to the Virginia Baptist General Board, serving on the Finance Committee and Memorial Committee. He was also a member of Gideons International.
Mr. Matney was a 1965 graduate of Grundy Senior High School, a 1970 graduate of Virginia Polytechnic and State University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration and a major in economics. He attended Southwest Virginia Community College and was a member of the Silver Hokie Club at Virginia Tech.
He was a member of the Eastern Star, Sandy Valley Lodge 17 AF&AM. He was on the Buchanan County School Board for the past seven and a half years and its chairman for four and a half years, serving on the Building Committee, Technology and Finance Committee. He served the Virginia School Board Association as Southwest Regional chairman in 1996-97. He was on the Legislative Committee for the Virginia School Board Association and a member of Buchanan County Chamber of Commerce.
Surviving, besides his father, are his wife, Peggy Cecil Matney; two sons, Russell Matthew Matney of Lynchburg and Gregory Todd Matney of North Tazewell; a sister, Frances Ward of Cedar Bluff; two brothers, Edison Sonny Matney and Mark Joe Matney, both of Grundy; three nieces; and three nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Willard Owens and the Rev. Don Pope will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park in Big Rock.
Mr. Matney was also preceded in death by a brother, Ben Lee Matney, Sept. 17, 1970.
Among survivors are daughters-in-law Karen Christine Matney of Lynchburg and Hope Artina of North Tazewell.
Pallbearers will be Dewey Looney, Jim Goff, David Fletcher, Terry Fletcher, Steve Matney, Terry Matney, Rages Matney, Joe Keene, Joe Gary Street, Dr. Anthony Cole, Tony Pieleck, Andrew Pieleck, Bill Cecil, Kris Cecil, Mickey Matney, John Otis Altizer, Roscoe Matney, Bobby Yates, Gary Steven Matney and Rusty Johnson. Honorary pallbearers will be Henry Farmer Sr., Kendal Looney, Earnest Blankenship, John Colley, James Keen, Burton McClanahan, Clifford Swiney, Carlie Vandyke, Tom Scott, Jim Bevins, Arnold Bailey, Everett Bailey, Carroll Branham, Frankie Landreth, Larry Stiltner, Isaac Coleman, Jerry Honaker, Tommy P. Justus, members of Buchanan County School Board and members of Harman Memorial Baptist Church Mens Sunday School Class.
Friends may call at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the funeral home chapel, where Masonic rites will be conducted by members of Sandy Valley Lodge at 7 p.m. followed by a song service. There will also be services at 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Harman Memorial Baptist Church Building Fund, c//o Jim Goff, P.O. Box 220, Maxie, VA 24628.
Grundy Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
