Loretta P. Schafran

SOUTHGATE, Mich. -- Loretta Faye Powers Schafran, 55, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Oak Grove Hospital.
She was a daughter of Lora Powers of Pound and the late Hadley Powers.
She was of the Catholic faith.
Surviving, besides her mother, are her husband, Andrew Schafran; a daughter Elisa Faye Roberts of Springhill, Tenn.; three sisters, Euna Vea Adams of Pound, Bonnie Johnson of Fairfax, Va., and Letha Branham of Fredericksburg, Va.; four brothers, Walter Powers and Shelvy "Booty" Powers, both of Pound, Gregory Powers of Wise and Freddy Powers of Hamlinville, W.Va.; and three grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Norton. The Rev. Joseph Facura will officiate. Burial will be in Powers Cemetery in Pound.
Mrs. Schafran was also preceded in death by a brother, Dallas Powers.
Among survivors are son-in-law, Joey Roberts of Springhill; and grandchildren, Joseph, Joelle and Laena Roberts.
Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth H. Scott

EMORY, Va. -- Elizabeth Hill Scott, 84, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was a daughter of the late Emory and Margaret Hill and the widow of Carl James Scott. She lived in Delaware and Virginia Beach before moving to Emory in 1980.
She was a member of Emory United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women for 17 years.
Surviving are a son, Kenneth James "Jimbo" Scott of Middletown, Del.; a daughter, Vicki S. Janucik of Daysboro, Del.; three brothers, Estes Hill of Blountville, Emory Hill of Glade Spring and Kelly Hill of Emory; two sisters, Ruth Coltrane and Margaret Raleigh, both of Emory; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be conducted Friday at 3 p.m. in Emory United Methodist Church by Farris Funeral Service in Abingdon. The Revs. James Bennington and David St. Clair will officiate. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
Among survivors are grandchildren, Lori Ann Johnson, Stephen Michael Janucik and Katie Jo Scott.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Emory United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 985, Emory, VA 24327.

Pearl Snowden

Funeral services for Pearl Snowden will be conducted Thursday at 8 p.m. in Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. Dewey Williams will officiate. Private burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Snowden, 89, of Sunbridge Hillside Nursing Home, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000.
She was born in Abingdon and lived in the Bristol area for the past 40 years. She was a home health aide for many years and a member of Belle Meadows Baptist Church. The was the widow of Jerry Snowden.
Surviving are two grandchildren, Debby Morrell and Wesley Jackson, both of Bristol Tennessee; four great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.
Mrs. Snowden was also preceded in death by a son, William L. Jackson.
Among survivors is daughter-in-law Joyce Jackson of Bristol Tennessee.
The family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday prior to the chapel service in Weaver Funeral Home.

Lona M. Stiltner

ABINGDON -- Funeral services for Lona Marie Stiltner will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. in Honaker Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Ancil Childress and Harless Hess will officiate. Burial will be in Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill.
Mrs. Stiltner, 79, formerly of Honaker, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Johnston Mmorial Hospital in Abingdon.
Pallbearers will be David Eaton, Jerry Dye, Tivis Brown, Danny Dye, Dolphas Dye, Rafty Dye, Stanley Brown, Jim Eaton, Tim Shortt and Ronnie Dye.
Honaker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Kate Taylor

ABINGDON -- Elizabeth Kate Taylor, 97, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Grace Health Care Center in Abingdon.
She was the widow of Robert Taylor.
Surviving are three brothers, Wesley R. Surber of Abingdon and Ted Surber and Frank Surber, both of Chilhowie.
There will be no funeral services.
D.R. Henderson Funeral Home of Saltville is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie L. Taylor

BELFAST, Va. -- Jessie Leona Taylor, 77, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in a Lebanon health care center.
She was born in Belfast Mills, Va., a daughter of the late Calvin and Lula Harper Taylor, both Russell County, Va., natives. She lived most of her life in the Bluefield, W.Va., and Washington, D.C., areas prior to returning to the Belfast area seven years ago.
She was a graduate of Lebanon High School and St. Lukes Hospital School of Nursing in Bluefield, W.Va. and was a member of Belfast United Methodist Church.
She was a retired registered nurse for St. Lukes Hospital in Bluefield, W.Va., and was a private duty nurse in the Washington, D.C. area.
Surviving are a sister, Thelma Ballenberger of Belfast; a niece; a nephew; two great-nieces; and two great-nephews.
Memorial services will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Belfast United Methodist Church in Belfast by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home of Richlands. The Rev. Carol Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in Ballenberger Family Cemetery in Belfast.
Mrs. Taylor was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Leach.
Among survivors are a niece, Susie White; a nephew, Louis Ballenberger; great-nieces, Angela White and Heather Hess; and great-nephews, Nathan Ballenberger and Louis White.
The family will receive friends in the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Belfast United Methodist Church, Route 2, Box 282, Cedar Bluff, VA 24609.
Hurst-Scott Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Grayson Yates

ABINGDON -- Funeral services for Grayson Yates will be conducted Saturday at 1 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel. Joe Sluss and the Rev. Dr. Steven Pollard will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Mr. Yates, 90, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Omaha, Va., in Dickenson County, a son of the late Ab and Virgie "Dolly" Yates, and was the widower of Grace Carty.
He attended King College and was a graduate of National Business College and Bowling Green Business School. For 38 years, he was a teacher in various schools in Dickenson County, where he started the first commercial department.
He was a member of Clintwood Masonic Lodge, the Shriners, Lions Club, Dickenson Educational Association and National Educational Organization. He was a past president of the Virginia 4-H Leaders Association and was a member of Abingdon Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Jolene Hay of Abingdon; a granddaughter, Megan Hay of Abingdon; and several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Yates was the second of eight children, all of whom preceded him in death: Roxie Cochran Fleming, Carl Yates, Morris Yates, Cova Yates, Kipling Yates, Rhea Stanley and Giles Yates.
Among survivors is son-in-law, R.C. Hay of Abingdon; and foster sister, Lillian Sifers of Powhatan, Va.
Mr. Yates was married to Grace Carty on Thanksgiving Day of 1933 and she preceded in him death on July 15, 1999. Early in his life, he was active in his community.
Pallbearers will be Benny Yates, Don Carty, Mack Rose, Nicholas Sluss, Asa Large and Darrell Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Roger Puckett, Rocky Carty, Carroll Baker and the Abingdon Baptist Church family.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday in Farris Funeral Service.

Arlie H. Anderson

CHILHOWIE -- Arlie Holmes (Edward) Anderson, 73, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
He was a son of the late James A. and Mary Thelma Patterson Anderson, and was the widower of Eulis Rogers Anderson.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of Francis Marion VFW Post 4667. He was retired from Radford Army Ammuniiton Plant in 1989 and was a member of Marion Church of God.
Surviving are a son, Roger A. Anderson of Boydton, Va.; three sisters, Dorothy A. Stevenson of Saltville, Shirley A. Helton of Marion and Linda A. Doyle of Wytheville, Va.; and three brothers, Robert M. Anderson, John C. Anderson and Neal Anderson, all of Marion.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Seaver- Brown Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Alley will officiate. Graveside services will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Fields United Methodist Church Cemetery near Boydton.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Seaver- Brown Chapel.

Masal Fry Barbour

A memorial service for Masal Fry Barbour will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in First Baptist Church in Bristol Virginia. Dr. W. Rand Forder will officiate. The family will receive friends after the service in the church. Burial will be in Cross Hill Cemetery in Carthage.
Mrs. Barbour, 92, of 1 Liberty Place, Bristol, Va., died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to First Baptist Church of Bristol or First Baptist Church of Carthage.
Oakley-Cook Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Catherine M. Barker

A small family graveside service for Catherine McKinney Barker will be conducted Saturday after visitation from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in Glenwood Mausoleum Cemetery Chapel. The Rev. Errol Rohr will officiate.
Miss Barker, 72, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Among survivors is a cousin, Margaret McKinney Hyder of Johnson City.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
