Steven J. Koorse, lawyer, dies at 49
Oct 30, 2002
Armed with a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in engineering, Steven J. Koorse was uniquely suited for the work of environmental law.
"He was one of the most knowledgeable Clean Water Act lawyers in the country," said Jim Christman, a colleague in the law firm of Hunton & Williams.
"He was working on a lifelong project in a way, and that was establishing scientifically sound ways of regulating the environment. He was in the middle of that work at the time of his death."
Mr. Koorse, a partner at Hunton & Williams and a former engineer with the Environmental Protection Agency, died Sunday after a long illness. He was 49.
After seven years as an environmental engineer with the EPA's Region 1 based in Boston, Mr. Koorse earned a law degree from the New England School of Law in 1984. He spent a year as assistant regional legal counsel before joining the Richmond office of Hunton & Williams, and he was named a partner in the firm in about 1992.
Christman said Mr. Koorse spent his 17-year career at Hunton & Williams working to help his business clients comply with increasingly complex environmental laws.
"His greatest concern was that those agencies that applied the law took account of the inherent limitations of scientific measurement techniques," Christman added.
Mr. Koorse was a member of several technical and scientific organizations, including the Water Environment Federation, the American Society of Testing and Materials and the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry. He published more than 50 professional papers in both legal and scientific journals.
He earned his bachelor's degree at the State University of New York and his master's degree at Northeastern University.
Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Koorse, and three children, Brenna Koorse, Haley Koorse and Jackson Koorse, all of Richmond.
A memorial service will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church.
