Ralph Lee Matney Sr.

SPEEDWELL, Va. -- Ralph Lee Matney Sr., died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000.
He was born in Sugar Grove, a son of the late Bennie Porter Matney and Pearl Brewer Matney. He was the widower of Anne Laurie Wilkinson Matney. He was a member of Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church, the Salvation Army, Club 55 Bowling League, Wythe County Democratic Party and a former member of the Wythe County Board of Supervisors.
Surviving are two sons, Ralph L. Matney Jr. of Speedwell and Raymond E. Matney of Rural Retreat; a daughter, Shirley M. Caudill of Speedwell; a brother, James Matney of Merlin, Ore., three sisters, Maude Bringman and Virginia Calihan of Lake Placid, Fla., and Bonnie Halter of Royal Oak, Mich.; nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church on Dry Road in the Speedwell Community by Gillman Funeral Chapel in Wytheville. The body will be taken to the church an hour before services. Burial will be in Groseclose Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Matney was also preceded in death by three brothers, Benjamin, Otis and Franklin Matney; and two sisters, Myrtle Matney and Betty Van Devender Elrod Roston.
Among survivors are daughters-in-law Wanda Matney of Speedwell and Nancy Matney of Rural Retreat; and son-in-law J.C. Caudill of Speedwell.
Mr. Matney was a self-educated man and was well versed in the Holy Scriptures. He loved his family and was very involved in their lives.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel or any time at the home of the children.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Groseclose Chapel United Methodist Church or a charity of choice.
Gillman Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

James R. McClanahan

GRUNDY -- James Rages McClanahan, 71, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000.
He was born in Buchanan County, a son of the late George W. and Hulda Frances Stiltner McClanahan. He was a 1947 graduate of Mountain Mission School, a retired self-employed coal operator and member of Grundy Church of Christ. He was a former federal mine inspector, an employee of Grundy Funeral Home and a horse trainer. He was a member of IOOF Lodge 17 of Grundy, Childs Gentry Post 7360 and John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in West Germany with the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces. He achieved the rank of corporal, completing the military Police School and Intelligence in Oberambergau, Germany. While in Germany, he received the Occupation Medal. After his discharge from active duty, he continued to serve in the U.S. Armed Forces as an active status soldier in the Ready Reserve.
Surviving are his wife, Daisy Beavers McClanahan; a daughter, Frances Caroline McClanahan of Grundy; a son, James Rages McClanahan Jr. of Grundy; a sister, Agnes McClanahan Mullins of Grundy; and two grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Grundy Funeral Home Chapel. Evangelists Clarence Greenleaf, Michael Trent and Tom Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park at Big Rock with full military rites by members of John Ratliff Post 164 of the American Legion.
Mr. McClanahan was also preceded in death by a brother, Paul Burton McClanahan.
Among survivors are grandchildren Pfc. James Rages McClanahan III, stationed with the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell, Ky., and Della Elizabeth "Liza" McClanahan of Grundy.
Pallbearers will be Terry Watts, Steve Stacy, Jeff Burks, Roy Lee Rife, Phillip Justice, James Rages McClanahan III, Curtis Ragus Mullins Jr. and Ryan C. Mullins. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Johnson, Billy Ray Lester, Billy Ray Belcher, Charlie Smith, J.B. Rife, Auburn Ratliff, Roscoe Rife, Dr. Vinod Modi, Dr. J.P. Sutherland Sr., Dr. Thomas D. McDonald, Ray Collins, Frennie Justice, Carmel Justice, C.M. Sublett, Robert Rasnake, Mickey McGlothlin, Winfield Dellinger Jr., Nicholas Persin and Dr. Murphy Miller.
Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Mountain Mission School, 1 Hurley St., Grundy, VA 24614.

Betty H. Roche

ABINGDON -- Betty Hartenhoff Roche, 73, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
She was born in Fulton, N.Y., and lived in various places before moving to Abingdon 35 years ago. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and assisted in vacation Bible school. She was employed with Johnston Memorial Hospital for nine years in medical records and as an emergency room clerk.
Surviving are her husband, John "Jack" Roche; two sons, Daniel H. Roche and David J. Roche, both of Abingdon; a daughter, Colleen R. Ornduff of Jonesborough, Tenn.; a brother, Glenn H. Hartenhoff of New Hampshire; a sister, Ann H. Gould of Oswego, N.Y.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be conducted Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Colonial Chapel Mausoleum in Forest Hills Memory Gardens. The Rev. Bob Krenik and pastor Frank Honeycutt will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens.
Among survivors are daughter-in-law Charlene Roche of Abingdon and son-in-law Larry D. Ornduff of Jonesborough.
The family will receive friends after the service in the mausoleum or any time at the home of her son, David J. Roche, 25633 Old Saltworks Road, Abingdon. There will be no visitation in Farris Funeral Service.

Edward Lee Smith Sr.

Funeral services for Edward Lee Smith Sr. will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in Akard Funeral Chapel. Dr. Stan Anderson and the Rev. Jim Cumbo will officiate. Burial will be in Holston View Cemetery in Weber City with military rites by VFW Patton-Crosswhite Post 6975.
Mr. Smith, 72, of Bristol Virginia died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Honorary pallbearers will be friends, neighbors, members of the Goodson-Kinderhook Volunteer Fire Department, Dr. Fred Greear, Jason York, David Eaton, Noah Key, Johnny Barker and J.R. Garrett.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Goodson-Kinerhook Volunteer Fire Department, 19864 Benhams Road, Bristol, VA 24202.

Radford R. Stacy

MAXIE, Va. -- Radford Roy Stacy, 67, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Stacy, a son of the late Frederick and Rebecca Adeline Stacy. He attended the Freewill Baptist Church and the Church of God. He was employed for many years with Harmon Mining Co. and was a disabled member of United Mine Workers Union. He was the widower of Juanita Dales Stacy.
Surviving are four sisters, Naomie Stacy Campbell of Abingdon, Anita Maggard of Pine Top, Ky., Marie Dotson of Hurley and Shelby Jean Howiler of Chesterlime, Ohio; four brothers, James Stacy, Barnes Stacy, Clinard Stacy and Freddie Stacy, all of the Stone Coal section of Grundy; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. in Slate Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Hobbs Branch in Slate Creek. Elders Ezra Davis Jr., Bufford Stacy, Don Matney and Henry Nullins will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain Valley Memorial Park.
Mr. Stacy was also preceded in death by a brother, Harold Stacy; and four sisters, Mildred Mae Keene, Lydia Margaret Adams, Gertrude Short and Pansy Stacy.
Among survivors is a special sister-in-law, Ruby Kennedy of Paynesville.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Compton, Shawn Compton, Sammy Looney, Johnny Looney, Ronnie Dales, Jimmy Dales, Roger Stacy, J.D. Adams, Ron Adams, Hassel Dotson, Michael Bailey, Freddie Maggard and Eddie Maggard. Honorary pallbearers will be James Kennedy and Dewayne Bailey.
The family will receive friends beginning at 6 p.m. Saturday in Slate Creek Primitive Baptist Church at Hobbs Branch.

Ernestine St. John

MEADOWVIEW -- Graveside services Hettie Ernestine "Bug" St. John will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Forest Hllls Memory Gardens. Those attending should meet at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. to go to the cemetery.
Mrs. St. John, 71, died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, in Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Pallbearers will be Wayne Gobble, Mark Venable, Wayne Rector, Scott Rector, Matthew Rector, Sammy Owens Jr., Eddie Bailey and Wayne Davenport Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Sam Owens, Donnie Holmes, Garnett Mann, Johnny Delp, Jack Snavely, Dan McVey and members of the Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department.
Memorial contributions may be sent to Meadowview Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 84, Meadowview, VA 24361.

Vergie E. Sykes

HAYSI -- Vergie Edwards Sykes, 84, of Route 2, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Holston Valley Hospital in Kingsport.
She was born in Dickenson County, a daughter of the late Nathan and Judy Barton Edwards. She was the widow of John Burl Deel and Monroe Sykes. She was a homemaker and member of Sandy Basin Primitive Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Mrs.. James (Loraine) Thomas of Pilgrim Knob, Va., Mrs. Pierce (Gay) Powers of Baltimore, Mrs. Delano (Pauline) Sykes of Birchleaf and Mrs. Wayne (Kathy) Breeding of Davenport; a son, Ellis Wayne Deel of Birchleaf; two sisters, Delphia Yates and Rachel Yates, both of Haysi; 18 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 11 a.m. in Haysi Funeral Home. Elders Darrell Davis, Roger Fuller, Leonard Barton and Danny Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Nathan Edwards Cemetery, Route 1, Clinchco.
Among survivors is daughter-in-law Sherry Deel of Birchleaf.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
The family will receive friends after 6 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home, where a service will be held at 7 p.m. Elders Joe Edwards, Frank Viers, Price Viers, Ben Combs and Garnell Gilbert will officiate.
Haysi Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Lena Jane Witten

CANEBRAKE, W.Va. -- Lena Jane Witten, 96, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at her home.
Funeral arrangements will be announced by Hurst-Scott Funeral Home in Richlands, Va.

Bill M. Woods

CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Bill M. Woods, 73, died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, in Casa Grande.
He was born in Dante, Va., a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Woods. He was a U.S. Navy and U.S. Army veteran.
Surviving are a brother, Howard Woods of Castlewood; and three sisters, Agnes Addington, Edna Smith and Louise Evans, all of Castlewood.
