Bertha M. Gross

BLUFF CITY -- Graveside services for Bertha Mae Gross will be Friday at 1 p.m. in Morrell Cemetery. Those attending should meet at the funeral home at 12:30 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery.
Mrs. Gross, 92, of 311 Gross Road, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in Johnson City Medical Center Hospital.
She was born in Sullivan County, a daughter of the late William Hamilton and Carrie Martin Messimer. She attended Walnut Grove Baptist Church.
Surviving are a son, James Russell Gross of Bluff City; a sister, Lucy Church of Blountville; a brother, Walter Messimer of Holiday, Fla.; three granddaughters, Janice Cunningham of Bluff City, Linda Gross of Knoxville and Denise Tatham of Gray, Tenn.; two great-grandsons, Michael Tatham and Adam Tatham, both of Gray; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be selected from nephews and neighbors. Honorary pallbearer will be Bill Jones.
Tetrick Funeral Home Bluff City Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Frank Edward Hammons

BLUFF CITY -- Frank Edward Hammons, 69, of 3452 Rock Hold Road, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in James H. Quillen Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
He was born in Mountain City, a son of the late Samuel Elrod and Cara Mae McCoy Hammons. He had lived in the Bristol area since 1949. He was employed as a carpenter until his retirement in 1992 and attended Locust Gap Freewill Baptist Church in Mountain City.
Mr. Hammons served in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Korean War. He earned a commendation medal, was a former POW-MIA and was the recipient of two Purple Hearts.
He was a member of the Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge 444 and the widower of Betty Hammons.
Surviving are his wife, Zellarhea Hammons; three daughters, Karen Thompson of Stone Mountain, Ga., Phyllis Baker of Coleman Falls, Va., and Kimberly Harris of Bristol Tennessee; a son, Stephen Hammons of Lawrenceville, Ga.; a stepson, Christopher Sheets of Columbia, S.C.; two sisters, Ella Mae McCullach and Nancy Wilson, both of Mountain City, Tenn.; four brothers, Fred Hammons of Jonesboro, Ga., and Glen Hammons, Larry Hammons and Richard Hammons, all of Mountain City.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Tetrick Funeral Home Bluff City Chapel. Pastor Ted Lewis will officiate. Graveside services will be in Sunrise Cemetery in Bluff City with military honors by Mountain City VFW.
Pallbearers will be Glen Hammons, Richard Hammons, Larry Hammons, Estel Main, Ken Moore and Richard Nichols. Honorary pallbearers will be Dwight Tester, Christopher Sheets, Fred Hammons, Curtis Harris, Randall Baker and Gary O'Dell.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home or other times at the residence.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 2513 Wesley St., Johnson City, TN 37601.

Patsy Hicks

CASTLEWOOD -- Funeral services for Patsy Jean Hicks will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Cliff Duncan, Roger Hearl and Larry Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Hicks-Mullins Cemetery in Castlewood.
Miss Hicks, 46, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at her home.
Pallbearers will be Edward Meade, Stephen Campbell, Allen Salyer, Billy Joe Hicks, Robert Hicks and Holland Osborne.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Castlewood Funeral Home.

Ida K. Higginson

JONESVILLE, Va. -- Ida Katherine Higginson, 88, died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Valley Health Care Center in Chilhowie.
She was born in Jonesville, a daughter of the late Alexander and Rose Davis. She was the widow of W.G. Higginson.
She was a member of the Russell Chapel United Methodist Church and the UMW.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Rose) Payne of Abingdon; two sisters, Grace Davis and Eva D. Rush of the home; four grandchildren, Scott Minor of New York City, Todd Minor of Charlottesville, Jill Harless of Bristol Virginia and Chadd Minor of Scottsville; five great-grandchildren, Susanna Minor, Nolan and Wyatt Minor and Zachary and Gabrial Harless; a niece; a nephew; a great-nephew; two great-nieces; a great-great-nephew; and two great-great-nieces.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Russell Chapel United Methodist Church in Jonesville by Arney-Mullins Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Marshall and Dr. Steven Pollard will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Jonesville.
Pallbearers will be W.R. Grizzle, Chester Grizzle, Dan Scott, Ronnie Hicks, Larry Collins and Bob McNiel.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Arney-Mullins Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Russell Chapel United Methodist Church, Jonesville, VA 24263.

Reubin W. Hill

MOUNT DORA, Fla. -- Reubin Ward Hill, 82, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in St. Mary's Hospital in Huntington, W.Va.
Funeral arrangements will be announced Saturday by Oakley-Cook Funeral Home of Bristol Tennessee.

Marie M. Holbrook

CASTLEWOOD -- Funeral services for Marie M. Holbrook will be conducted Friday at 2 p.m. in Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mike Moore will officiate. Burial will be in Temple Hill Memorial Park in Castlewood.
Mrs. Holbrook, 86, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
Pallbearers will be Frank Tompa, Mike McGlothlin, Ralph Maples, Cameron Mullins, Scott Steffey and Danny Clay.
Castlewood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Juanita Simcox Hutton

BLUFF CITY -- Juanita Simcox Hutton, 75, of 533 Big Springs Road, died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area, a homemaker and member of Holston Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, William Simcox and Terry Simcox, both of Bluff City, and Verlin Simcox of Bristol Tennessee; three daughters, Alta Hughes and Shirley Frye, both of Bluff City, and Kay Tallman of Bristol Tennessee; two half-brothers, Louis Henegar of Bristol Virginia and Dennis Henegar of Florida; a half-sister, Lois Smith of Bluff City; her stepmother, Elvie Henegar of Bluff City; nine granddaughters; six grandsons; 30 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 2 p.m. in Holston Baptist Church by Weaver Funeral Home. The Revs. Haynes Watson, Jim Crews and Roy Yelton will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Hutton was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar Hughes; and a granddaughter, Tiffany Simcox.
Among survivors are special friend, Harold Boughers; and granddaughters, Penny Rutherford, Beth Rainey, Debbie Arnold, Teresa Jordan, Lisa Gill, Tammy Kiser, Karen Roberts, Julie Glover and Sherry Hicks.
The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday in Weaver Funeral Home.

Alfred C. Johnson

MENDOTA, Va. -- Funeral services for Alfred C. Johnson will be conducted Friday at 1 p.m. in Pine Grove Baptist Church by Akard Funeral Home. The Revs. Walter Statzer and Darrell Fritts will officiate. Burial will be in Mendota Cemetery.
Mr. Johnson, 58, died Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2000, at his home.
Pallbearers will be Fred Bevins, Stevie Shaffer, Ronnie Widner, Tommy Newton, Ken Osborne, Allen Dean, Marty Roller and Dennis Osborne. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Sue Prill, Wendy Vogel, Bill Powers, Glenn Roller, Bob Johnson and Paul Newton.
Akard Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dwight L. Jones

Funeral services for Dwight L. Jones will be conducted Saturday at 3 p.m. in Akard Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Laura R. Rasor will officiate. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Jones, 91, of 829 Taylor St., Bristol, Tenn., died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, at her home.
She was a lifelong resident of the Bristol area and the widow of Delmer T. Jones. She was a retired secretary from Goodpasture Motors, a member of Virginia Avenue United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Womens Auxiliary.
Among survivors are two cousins, Mrs. Frank (Mary Alice) McGlothlin and Bernard Shumaker, both of Bristol Tennessee.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the residence or from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday in Akard Funeral Home.

Walter S. Mays

Walter S. "Whitey" Mays, 69, of Bristol Virginia died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2000, in Bristol Regional Medical Center.
He was born in Grundy, a son of the late Henry and Nellie Herndon Mays. He had lived in Bristol for the past 35 years. He owned and managed the Moonlite Drive-In Theater in Abingdon for 28 years. He served as a baseball coach for the Washington County Little League, was a U.S. Army veteran and a member of American Legion Post 145. While living in Grundy, he was an employee of the Virginia Mountaineer newspaper.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Beulah Dawson Mays; a son, Nathanial Mays of the home; four daughters, Pamela Herman of Bristol Tennessee, Angela Kirkpatrick of Staunton, and Mitzi Kennedy and Belinda Gubala, both of Bristol Virginia; eight grandchildren; and a nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 4 p.m. in Farris Funeral Chapel in Abingdon. Minister David Gaminde and the Rev. Don Page will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon.
Among survivors are grandchildren Derek and Brad Loudy, Carena and LaTasha Kirkpatrick, Jared Keesee, Jonathan Gubala, Tristan Kennedy and Melissha Herman; and nephew Gerald Mays.
Mr. Mays and his wife recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary.
The family of Mr. Mays wishes to extend special gratitude to the Bristol Lifesaving Crew, Dr. Matthew Wood and the staff and nurses of Bristol Regional Medical Center's Surgical Intensive Care Unit.
Pallbearers will be Jan Gubala, Audie Herman, Mike Kirkpatrick, Jason Kennedy, Bad Loudy and Derek Loudy. Honorary pallbearers will be Gerald Mays, Jim Loudy, Leon Rasnake, Jim Perkins, Jim Dotson, Ross Mullins, William Booker, Lodge Compton, Andrew Horne and Roy Mays.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Shriners, P.O. Box 5548, Kingsport, TN 37663.
