Lucy B. Mosley

CHESAPEAKE -- Lucy B. Mosley of the 1600 block of Weber Ave. died Sept. 4, 1999. A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Hilda B. Tebault

CHESAPEAKE -- Hilda Batten Tebault, 74, formerly of Stadium Drive and Chesapeake Beach, died Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, in Mecklenburg County.

Mrs. Tebault was born in Durham, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Lonnie May and Ollie Moore Batten. She was a homemaker. She was the widow of John Russell Tebault and was predeceased by a son, John Russell Tebault Jr.

She is survived by three sisters, Della Morgan of Wilson, N.C., Ramona Rauschert of Durham and Catherine Bailey of Raleigh, N.C.; four brothers, Erwin Batten of Durham, Jack D. Batten of Bracey, Va., Bobby Batten of Virginia Beach and Donnie Batten of Durham; and 25 nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens with Tony McLean officiating. The family will receive friends at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today.

Novella B. Teel

CHESAPEAKE -- Novella B. Teel, 65, of the 1000 block of Campostella Road, died Sept. 3, 1999, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Greenville, N.C., she retired as a telephone operator from Norfolk Social Services after 14 years. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Berkley, was past president of the No. 2 Choir and vice president of The Inspirational Choir.

Survivors include her husband, Luther Teel; three daughters, Barbara Savage of Chesapeake, Patricia Brock of Virginia Beach and Cynthia Scott of Norfolk; three sons, Ronald Briley and Larry Paul of Norfolk and Allen Briley of Jacksonville, Ark.; her mother, Lela Daniel of Norfolk; a brother, William Briley of Philadelphia; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Beulah Perry of Norfolk; and many other surviving relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Berkley, by the Rev. Dr. I. Joseph Williams. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Frances E. Whitton

CHESAPEAKE -- Frances Earl Whitton, 88, of the 1300 block of Danielle Court, died Sept. 7, 1999, in Virginia Beach. She was a former resident of the Thoroughgood section of Virginia Beach.

Born in Greenbay, Va., she was the widow of Arthur M. Whitton Sr. and a member of Ocean View Baptist Church. She retired as a nursery school supervisor from The Armed Forces Staff College.

Survivors include a son, Arthur M. Whitton Jr. of Chesapeake; a grandchild, Arthur M. Whitton III of Virginia Beach; and a great-grandchild, Tiffany Whitton of Virginia Beach.

A graveside service will be conducted at noon Thursday in Rosewood Memorial Park by the Rev. Dr. David Clay. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is handling arrangements.

The family asks that flowers be omitted and memorials be made to either the Shriner's Hospital for Crippled Children or the Shriner's Burn Hospital.

David L. Burrus III

NORFOLK -- David Lee ``Huss" Burrus III of the 4600 block of Lind St. passed away on Sept. 4, 1999, in Hampton.

He was a native of Norfolk, born on Oct. 17, 1946, to the late David and Familiar Burrus. He was also predeceased by a brother, Wellington Burrus, and was a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam.

He leaves to mourn his wife, Shirley Whitfield Burrus; two daughters, Inger Goss and Alfreda Parsons; two sons, Jerry Brickhouse and Derek Lathan; two sisters, Tina Peek and Diane Burrus, all of Norfolk; a brother, Calvin ``Pop" Simmons of Hampton; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Graves Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony McNair. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery. Visitations are at 4602 Lind St.

Melvin A. Burwell

NORFOLK -- Melvin Andrew ``Sarge" Burwell of the 1200 block of W. 40th St. died Sept. 2, 1999, at his residence.

Born in Norfolk, he was a laborer and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of Vietnam. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, and was the widower of Barbara Burwell.

Survivors include two daughters, Melessia Anita Burwell and Tracey Burwell, both of Norfolk; a son, Melvin Andrew Burwell III of Buckingham County; his father, James E. Burwell Sr. of Norfolk; three sisters, Ernestine Wilson and Blanche Burrus, both of New York, and maternal sister, Agatha Johnson of Norfolk; three brothers, James Burwell Jr. of Portland, Maine, the Rev. Theodore Burwell of New York, and Capt. Rudolph Burwell of Chesapeake; 12 grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Barbara Burwell; a special friend, Mevelyn Dickens; and a host of other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his mother, Rosa Mae Jones.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Friday at First Baptist Church, Lamberts Point, by Bishop Anthony Moses. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. The family will receive friends at the home of Capt. Rudolph Burwell, 1501 Pine Grove Lane, Chesapeake. The family will assemble at 11 a.m. at the funeral home for the procession. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m.

Mary L. Cooper

NORFOLK -- Mary Lucille Cooper, 73, of the 200 block of E. Virginia Beach Blvd., died Sept. 3, 1999, at Sentara Nursing Home. A daughter of Lucy Webb and Plummer Webb, ``Cille" was born in Windsor, N.C., and was a domestic worker.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary J. Cooper; eight sons, William L. Cooper, Felton Cooper Jr., Willie R. Cooper, Carl E. Cooper, James A. Cooper, Donald L. Cooper, Byron M. Cooper and Andrew R. Cooper; 12 sisters; one brother; and 24 grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at Graves Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony McNair. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Sam Jones

NORFOLK -- Sam Jones, 74, of the 3500 block of Jersey Ave., died Sept. 4, 1999. A service will be in New Bern, N.C. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home is in charge.

William D. Laughinghouse

NORFOLK -- William Duval Laughinghouse died Sept. 6, 1999, at his residence. He was born Oct. 10, 1915, in Pamlico County, N.C., and was the son of the late William Junius and Ola Dunn Laughinghouse.

He served in World War II as a flight instructor for the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1981, he retired as a past officer and director of The Daily Press and Times Herald Inc. Since 1951, he was a member of the Khedive Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. and past director of the Royal Order of the Jesters Norfolk Court No. 75.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth C. Laughinghouse; two sons, Henry L. Laughinghouse of New Bern, N.C., and William Duval Laughinghouse Jr. of Danville, Va.; two brothers, Ward J. Laughinghouse of New Bern and Alton D. Laughinghouse of Atlantic Beach, N.C.; and four grandchildren.

A private family service will be held at New Bern Memorial Cemetery at 11 a.m. Friday by the Rev. Bill Wingard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, c/o Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Bryant Funeral Home, Alliance, N.C., is handling arrangements.

Gross Miller

NORFOLK -- Gross Miller of the 800 block of W. 41st St. died Sept. 5, 1999. A funeral will be at noon Thursday in Riddick Funeral Service chapel.

Sammie Lee Selby

NORFOLK -- Sammie Lee Selby, 62, of the 500 block of Fauquier Court, departed this life on Sept. 2, 1999.

He was a native of Engelhard, N.C., and was the son of the late Arthur and Mable Selby. He was a member of Phillippi Church of Christ Disciples. He was married to Barbara King. He was employed by Hebrew National in Maspath, N.Y., until his retirement in 1980. He was a graduate of Hyde County public schools and a believer in lifelong learning. Sammie studied biology and chemistry at Norfolk State University.

He leaves to cherish his memory a son, Sammie Tyrone Selby of Rio Rancho, N.M.; four daughters, Cheryl Selby and Lisa Patterson of North Plainfield, N.J., Angela Selby of Bronx, N.Y., and Brittany Selby of Norfolk; three brothers, Charlie Selby, David Selby and John Selby; three sisters, Lucinda S. Davenport, Rebecca S. Bryant and Flonia S. Davenport; six grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today in Graves Funeral Chapel. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Englehard, N.C.

Virginia D. Spencer

NORFOLK -- Virginia D. Spencer, 91, originally of Norfolk, departed this life on Monday, Sept. 6, 1999, after a long illness at Genesis Elder Care Nursing Home in Williamsburg.

She is survived by very devoted cousins, Ann Whitehead and her husband, Neal, and their children; cousin, Alleen Washington and her children; and other friends, including devoted friends, Mattie Pritchett and Annabell Willis.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at First Calvary Baptist Church by Dr. Johnnie White. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Her remains rest at Hale Funeral Home where family and friends will gather at noon Thursday.

Randolph Jones

PORTSMOUTH -- Randolph Jones, 82, of the 900 block of Bailey Place, died Sept. 6, 1999, in a Portsmouth hospital.

A native of Whaleyville, Va., he was a retired welder from Little Creek Ferry Service.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian E. Jones; a daughter, Barbara Proffit and husband, Cecil; a son, Alfred J. Jones, all of Portsmouth; two sisters, Nettie Spenader of Mendota, Ill., and Ruth Collins of Newport News; five grandchildren, Cindy McCain and husband, David, Denise Daniels and husband, Tim, Judy Proffit, Thomas H. Jones and wife, Becky, Christine Anglebrandt and husband, Jim; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Larry O'Brien. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Sybil E. Bear

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sybil Ellen Bear, 50, fell asleep in death Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999, at her home.

Born April 23, 1949, in Hialeah, Fla., she was the daughter of Sam and Lois Toms of Newport News. A graduate of Granby High School, Sybil married her high school sweetheart, David Bear, on Nov. 29, 1969.

Sybil will be remembered as a person who deeply loved her family and friends and served Jehovah God faithfully until her death. She was a member of the Ocean Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses.

She is survived by her loving and faithful husband of 30 years, David Bear; her loving children, Monica of Virginia Beach and David Christopher of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; a granddaughter, Serena Bear; a daughter-in-law, Jessica Bear; her sisters, Sally, Lori and Lois; and brothers, Sam and Dwight; as well as loving nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial talk will be given at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Pritchard Road, Virginia Beach. Sybil was a very special person, deeply loved by all of her family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ocean Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is in charge.

George W. Gilliam

VIRGINIA BEACH -- George Washington ``Buck" Gilliam of the 600 block of Bottino Lane slipped peacefully away to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999. His battle was over and he fought a good fight.

George W. Gilliam was the first of 11 children born to the late Grant and Annie Rascoe Gilliam in Windsor, N.C., on Nov. 30, 1918. He attended Bertie County Public Schools in Windsor and joined Indian Woods Baptist Church at an early age.

He was married to the late Lillian Sutton in 1946 and moved to Norfolk. He joined First Calvary Chapel Baptist Church, now known as Woodland Avenue Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and retired after 30 years from the U.S. Public Health Service Hospital as a supervisor. During the same time, he retired from Giant Open Air Market after 25 years. He also retired from the Virginia Beach Public School System after five years. He also worked at Woodland Avenue Baptist Church as a custodian.

He served on a number of auxiliaries at Woodland Avenue Baptist Church. He was co-chairman of the Deacon Board, superintendent of the Sunday School, Trustee Board, a member of the Missionary Board, Hospitality Committee, Pastor's Aide and the Brotherhood Ministry. He also was a member of the Old Dominion Missionary Conference.

He leaves to cherish his memories four children, Evangelist Eloise Roberts of Virginia Beach, Gregory O'Shea Gilliam of Norfolk, Jeffery DeShon Gilliam and wife, Thomasene, of Chesapeake, and Phyllis Diane Flyth and husband, Calvin, of Norfolk; two sisters, Margaret Hyman of Windsor, N.C., and Willie Hines of Virginia Beach; two brothers, Charles and Grant Gilliam of Baltimore; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; an aunt, Ophelia Parker of Windsor, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws and friends, including a special friend, Mattie Jones.

He was also predeceased by a son-in-law, Lee Roberts.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Woodland Avenue Baptist Church by the Rev. Serafio Fontanilla. Burial will be in Indian Woods Baptist Church Cemetery, Windsor, N.C. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.
