JARRELL
Oran V. Jarrell, 78, of Ruther Glen, died Thursday, September 6, 2001. Survivors include his wife, Frances Wright Jarrell; his son, Thomas Graham Jarrell of Richmond; two brothers, Arlon Jarrell of Springfield, Tenn. and V. Clellan Jarrell of Richmond; three sisters, Emogene Fulk of Mt. Airy, N.C., Bernelle Rich of Roanoke and Josifae Dresser of Winston-Salem, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Sara M. and Jason T. Jarrell. A funeral service will be held Saturday, September 8, 2001 at 2 p.m. in the chapel of the Storke Funeral Home, Bowling Green. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Cardinal Baptist Church Building Fund, 25050 Ruther Glen Rd., Ruther Glen, Va. 22546.

JENKS
Stuart Carlyle Jenks, of Farnham, Va., died Monday, September 3, 2001 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was a retired lt. colonel in the United States Marine Corps, having served in World War II on Okinawa and in China, and during the Korean War, retiring in 1982. Mr. Jenks also had a career with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad for 15 years, and the IBM Corporation for 24 years. He graduated from T.J. High School. Mr. Jenks attended the Citadel in Charleston, S.C., but due to circumstances of war, he completed his education at Duke University from which he and his wife, Mary, graduated in 1947. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Mary Saum Jenks, he is survived by his daughter, Pamela Elton Jenks of Raleigh, N.C.; and his son, Stuart C. Jenks Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. He was a member of the Citadel Club of Greater Washington and the Citadel Development Foundation. His Citadel ring was one of the less than ten that did not have a year on it due to his sudden departure because of the war. He was an active member of St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church, Lively, Va., where he served on their Vestry and as Junior Warden. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, September 9 at 2 p.m. at St. Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church, 2940 Whitechapel Rd., Lancaster, Va. 22503 (corner of Route 354 & 201). Visitation will be at the church on Saturday, September 8 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the St. Mary's Whitechapel Memorial Fund noted in memory of Stuart Jenks. The family will be at their residence.

JONES
Frank O. "Pete" Jones Jr. departed this life suddenly on August 31, 2001. He was the son of the late Melvina M. Jones and the late Frank F. Jones Sr. He was preceded in death by his stepbrother, Keith L. Jones. He is survived by his stepmother, Johnsie L. Jones; stepbrother, Bobby L. (Tammi) Jones; stepsisters, Scharanda (Robert) Jarman, Stephanie (Calvin) Reynolds and Elder Felecia (Vincent) Coleman; one devoted niece, Bernetta (Stanley) Washington; several cousins; devoted friends, Sylvester Turner, jerome whitaker, GRTC bus drivers and the men at Harvey's Barber Shop. Funeral services will be held at W.S. Watkins Funeral Home on Saturday, September 8, 2001, at 3 p.m. Intement Virginia Veterans Cemetery, Amelia, Va.

KELLEY
Lloyd C. Kelley, age 90, of Mattaponi, died September 6, 2001. He is survived by three daughters, Patty Upshaw, Carol K. Wright and Gay Nell K. Zeb; ten grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren. Remains rest at the B.W. White Funeral Home, Aylett, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Service 11 a.m. Saturday at Sharon Baptist Church. Interment in church cemetery.

MADISON
Frances B. Madison, 87, of Richmond, died Tuesday, September 4, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Emmett E. Madison; her daughter, Esther M. Ward; her son, Clarence M. Madison; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mrs. Madison was retired from the Department of Motor Vehicles. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church and the African Violet Society. Her remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, September 7. Interment in Westhampton Memorial Park.

MAHAN
Keith Edgar Mahan, 96, formerly of Richmond, died September 4, 2001 at his home in Farnham, Va. Mr. Mahan was born in Menoca, Pa. and spent his earlier life there and in Saranac Lake, N.Y. and Arlington, Va. He relocated to Richmond after his retirement. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred Mullen Mahan; his son, William Keith Mahan and his wife, Julie of Woodbridge, Va.; his daughters, Susan Mahan Ramsey and her husband, Ed of Sharps, Va., Elizabeth Mahan Roberts and her husband, Jim of Sharps, Va.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Brownell and his wife, Julie; and two grandchildren. Mr. Mahan was a 32nd Degree Mason, Past Master of Whiteface Mountain Lodge in Saranac Lake, N.Y., and a current member of the Manchester Lodge No. 14 in Richmond, Va. He had been a member of the Richmond Camera Club. He belonged to Milden Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will be held at Milden Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 15, 2001 at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Harrietstown Cemetery in Saranac Lake, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Robert and Julie Mahan Scholarship Fund, Emory and Henry College, Emory, Va. 24327 or to the Friends of the Library, Warsaw, Va. 25272.

MARROW
Lucille J. Marrow went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, September 3, 2001. Surviving, a devoted husband, Louis Marrow Jr. and daughter, Rochelle L. Marrow; parents, Costella and Grace Baptist; five sisters, Rosa Vaughan, Hazel Baptist, Mary Maxfield, Martha Robinson and Margaret Garden; one brother, Leon Baptist; parents-in-law, Louis and Constance Marrow Sr.; other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Walter J. Manning Funeral Home, 700 N. 25th Street, where the family will receive friends Friday, 7 to 8 p.m., and where funeral services will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. Rev. Earl Terry officiating. Burial Rising Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, Sandston.

MELTON
Bernard Alvin Melton Sr., beloved husband, father and "Pop Pop" of Mineral, Virginia, passed away Tuesday, September 4, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Faris Alley Melton; two sons, Bernie Melton and his wife, Debbie; Scott Melton and his wife, Lois; daughter, Pamela Bradshaw and her husband, Les; brother, Grover L. "Kin" Melton; sister, Dorothy M. "Dolly" Brannan; five grandchildren, McKenzie, Grayson, Scottie, Kacie and Tanner. Family will receive friends at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 W. Broad St. Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 7 at Deep Run Baptist Church, 10907 Three Chopt Rd. Interment in church cemetery. OTELIA
Lucille Lamb Otelia departed this life on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at the Waverly Health Care Center. She was born December 27, 1909 in Richmond, Virginia to the late Wilson M. and Jean Estelle Lamb. She completed her education in the Charles City Public School System and later moved to New York where she lived for more than 30 years perfecting her skills as a "master" seamstress and dressmaker. She leaves to cherish her memory a devoted sister, Arnette Lamb Swan; a devoted brother-in-law, Charles Ellis; three sisters-in-law, Muriel, Daphne and Phyllis Lamb; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2001 at Gravel Hill Baptist Church, Claremont. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Annie C. Payne, 92, of Richmond, departed this life September 2, 2001. She was the widow of Alfred T. Payne. She is survived by three daughters, Irene Yarbrough (Joseph) of Philadelphia, Pa., Alfreda Morris (Rudolph), Norieta Anderson (Louis); a son, Alfred Payne (Mary), all of Richmond; eight grandchildren, Lisa Priestly of New York City, Aaron and Julie Yarbrough of Atlanta, Ga., Wanda Johnson, Heather Morris, Darryl and Gary Watts, and Shana Watson; nine great-grandchildren, Christopher Yarbrough, Thair, T'ana and Tapera Johnson, Michiah, Ashlie, and Parker Watts, Quinton and Kyra Watson; a sister, Louise Forrester; brother, Myles R. Cunningham Sr. (Wilhemina); a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. PITTS
George C. "Mike" Pitts Jr. of 7090 Covenant Woods Dr., Mechanicsville, Va., died on September 5, 2001 at the age of 87. Mr. Pitts held bachelor's and master's degrees from the College of William and Mary and served as an educator in the Williamsburg Baptist Church. Mr. Pitts was a native of King and Queen County, Va. and served in the Army Air Force during WWII. He was married to Frances Newton Hughes of Harrisonburg, Va. until her death in 1982. He is survived by his second wife, Mildred; and a son, George Richard Pitts. Memorial services will be held at the Williamsburg Baptist Church at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001, and at Covenant Woods at 3 p.m. on Sunday, September 9, 2001. PRATALI
Pat Pratali departed family, friends, and animal companions on September 5, 2001 to join in the eternal mystery. She is survived by her mother, Dorothy Pratali of Richmond; brother, Wayne Pratali of Los Angeles, Calif.; her four children, Penny Price, Scott Smith, Cathy Smith, all of Salem and Alan Smith of Williamsburg; four grandchildren, Lindsay, Channing and Sierra Price and Cayse Smith. Her father, Joseph Pratali and a sister Jeanmarie Pratali preceded her in death. Pat requested to be remembered as having lived a happy fulfilled life in which "all my dreams came true". In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PETA, The American Horse Protection Association, or the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. There will be a private family memorial service. Francis Clarkston "Frank" Russell III of Providence Forge, Va. died Thursday, Sepetmber 6, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Ashley S. Russell; his children, Zachary C. Russell, Michael "Shawn" Russell, Gerilyn Overman, Terry Spiller and Chad Edwards; 10 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; his mother, Mildred Russell; one brother, Ted Russell; two sisters, Phyllis Morrison and Peggy Branch. Mr. Russell was retired from Philip Morris and was the owner of Russell's Towing and Salvage Co. for 16 years. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Washington Memorial Park.

SEARS
Catherine Massey Sears, 84, died on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 in St. Mary's Hospital in Richmond. She was the widow of Landon B. Sears and was a native of Dutton, Va., she was also a member of Salem United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sears, with her husband, operated the Ark Servicecenter for over 35 years. She is survived by her children, Barbara Ann Sears of Richmond, June Sears Tice of Hampton and Charles B. Sears of Richmond; two sisters, Beatrice Mitchell of Irvington, Va. and Irma Morgan of Las Cruces, New Mexico; three grandchildren, Michael Sears, Pam Kilgor and Courtney Joyce; four great-grandchildren, Brandon Sears, Jordan Sears, Hunter Kilgor and Mark Kilgor. The family will receive friends at Andrews Funeral Home on Saturday, September 8, 2001 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. by Reverend Lowell P. Stovall on Saturday at Windsor Gardens in Dutton, Va. Memorial donations may be made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061. Andrews Funeral Home, Gloucester, is in charge of arrangements.

SWAIN
Clara Florence Swain entered into a quiet realm of peace on Monday, September 3, 2001 in Washington, D.C. She was born to the late Mollie G. Dillard on April 14, 1928. She leaves to cherish her memory her estranged husband, Fletcher Swain; five sons, the devoted Clarence Gordon, Leroy Gordon, Dennis Swain, Robert "Bop" and Raleigh "Gomez" Swain; three daughters, Sally Gordon, Jacquelyn Gordon and Denise Winkler; four sisters, Bessie Lewis, Annie Slocumb, Mae Gordon and Jimmie Baines; a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nephews, nieces, great-nephews, great-nieces, several in-laws, and two devoted friends, Dave Hardrick and Jacquelyn Settles-Burgess. She was preceded in death by a brother, Marvin Dillard. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2001, at Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull Street, Richmond, Va.
