Pattie Thompson

PORTSMOUTH -- Pattie .Thompson, 88, of the 2300 block of Lansing Ave., died Sept. 11, 1999, at Sentara Nursing Center of Portsmouth.

Born in Littleton, N.C., she was the widow of Wesley Thompson. She was a member and former usher for Olive Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

She is survived by a daughter, Reathella R. Moone of Portsmouth; two stepdaughters, Delores Rodgers of Washington, D.C., and Joyce Wyche of Emporia, Va.; a son, Robert L. Robinson of Portsmouth; two sisters; two brothers; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Olive Branch Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. J.B. Sharp. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday at Corprew Funeral Home where the family will be from 7 to 8 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Friday.

John J. DePool

VIRGINIA BEACH -- John Joseph DePool, 72, of the 500 block of Crosby Road died Sept. 12, 1999, at Spartanburg, S.C.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. DePool was a retired chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy after 32 years and was also a retired lieutenant from the Norfolk Sheriff's Department after 14 years. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 5 for more than 25 years; American Legion, D.A.V.; Fraternal Order of Police, Sewells Point Lodge No. 28; and Irish American Society of Virginia. He was also a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Mr. DePool is survived by his wife, Adda J. DePool; sister-in-law, Karin Skorupski and her husband, Frank, of Nashua, N.H.; and his nieces.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church by Monsignor Fr. Raymond A. Barton. Burial with military honors will be in Colonial Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Transportation Fund of the Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is in charge. He will be greatly missed by his friends.

Henry Highton

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Henry Highton, 80, died Sept. 12, 1999, in a Virginia Beach health care center.

He was born Jan. 5, 1919, in Birckenhead, England, the son of Henry and Elizabeth Hackman Highton. He was predeceased by his first wife, Barbara Gordon Highton, and by sisters Nora Peet and Edith McFall.

Henry is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth Baldwin Highton; five daughters, Barbara H. Powell, Brenda H. Whitaker and Molly H. Smith of Virginia Beach, Beth H. Carter of Richmond and Blair H. Daniels of Oceanside, Calif.; two sons, Henry Highton Jr. and William Highton of Virginia Beach; and 11 grandchildren.

Henry came to the United States with his family at age eight and lived in New York. As a youth, he sang with the boy's choir at Grace Episcopal Church, New York City. In his twenties, he became an American citizen and served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific during World War II. He graduated from Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, with a B.S. degree in chemistry, and was an agronomist with Norfolk's Smith-Douglass Co., later Borden Chemical.

Henry belonged to Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church and was a member of its choir and chancel drama group. He was active in Virginia Beach Master Gardener activities, tennis groups and little theater productions. He served as president of King's Grant School PTA and was chosen first Father of the Year in 1970 by the Virginia Beach Fraternal Order of Police.

A memorial service will be held at noon today at Eastern Shore Chapel, 2020 Laskin Road, Virginia Beach.H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. is handling arrangements.

Memorials may be made to Eastern Shore Chapel's building fund, or to Eastern Virginia Medical School's Diabetes. Institutes Foundation.

Lorraine Alice Horsch

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Laurie Horsch died Sept. 11, 1999, after a long and heroic battle against cancer.

Born in Torrington, Conn., Laurie lived and traveled around the world as a dedicated Navy wife. Luckily, Laurie settled in Virginia Beach, where she met some of the most amazing and supportive friends. Laurie was very active in the Fairfield Garden Club. She enjoyed socializing at the Kempsville Meadows Swim and Golf Club and the Larkspur Swim and Racquet Club. She was a member of the Church of the Ascension. She was a very active mother who spent much of her time car pooling to O.D.A.C., dancing, orchestra and scouting events with her children.

Most important to this remarkable woman were her husband and children. Always a devoted wife and mother, she will last in loving memory by her husband of 34 years, Arthur R. Horsch; her children, Richard and his fiancee, Julie Sanok, of Clifton Park, N.Y., Lisa and her friend, Steve Pollock, of Mt. Crawford, Va., Robert and his wife, Serena, of Suriname, and Steven of Takoma Park, Md.; her mother, Alda Rossi DeBrot; two sisters, Marlene Rouleau of Torrington, Conn., and Denise Barta of Kent, Wash.; and a host of family and friends amassed during a lifetime filled with laughter and love. She was preceded in death by her father, Marcel DeBrot.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel. A funeral Mass will be held in the Church of the Ascension at 2 p.m. Thursday by Fr. Jim Park. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.

Though Laurie loved flowers, she requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society for research so that one day no one will suffer from this disease.

Rasheed Jackson

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Rasheed Jackson, 50, of the 1500 block of Woodbridge Place, passed away Saturday, Sept. 12, 1999.

He is survived by Rasheed Jackson and Craig D. Jackson.

A memorial service will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.

Jack Quilter

VIRGINIA BEACH -- John ``Jack" Quilter, 77, who long played a leading role in a major international trade organization, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in his home in Virginia Beach, following an extended bout with cancer.

Mr. Quilter was one of the organizers of the Petroleum Equipment Institute in 1951 and twice served as its president. Today the institute has 3,000 member companies located in more than 60 countries around the world.

He was a native of Sandusky, Ohio. Although his father and two brothers were medical doctors, he chose a different career route. Following graduation from St. Ambrose College in Davenport, Iowa, with a bachelor's degree in chemistry, he went on to the wartime U.S.N. midshipmen's school at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Ind. After being commissioned there, he served as an officer aboard Navy minesweepers throughout the remaining years of World War II. His rank at the time of discharge was lieutenant commander.

In the post-war period, he served as chief executive officer of petroleum marketing equipment firms in Richmond and other Virginia cities. He also engaged in business consulting. At the time of his death he owned and operated Pollution Equipment Co. in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Quilter is survived by Jeannette, his wife of 19 years; a stepson, John Deeds of Richmond; three sons, Timothy Quilter of Heathsville, Va., John Quilter Jr. and Patrick Quilter, both of Richmond; six grandchildren; and a brother, Dr. Thomas N. Quilter, a retired physician of Marion, Ohio.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Thursday at Church of the Holy Family, 1279 N. Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Jacqueline R. Semones

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Jacqueline Ann Reynolds Semones, 47, passed away Sept. 13, 1999.

Jacqueline was a native of Columbia, S.C., and had been a resident of the Tidewater area for the past 25 years. She was a loving daughter and sister who will be deeply missed.

Survivors include her mother, Sue H. Reynolds; two brothers, Donald Reynolds Jr. and William E. Reynolds; two sisters, Joan L. Barrow and Donna Sue Yerby; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Princess Anne Memorial Park by the Rev. Terry Clark. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Waverly Goodman Sr.

SUFFOLK -- Deacon Waverly Goodman Sr., 87, of the 200 block of Mineral Spring Road, died Sept. 13, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Mount Joy Church. Applewhite Funeral Home is in charge.

Jesse L. Holland

SUFFOLK -- Jesse Leon Holland, 86, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mary Alice Holland, and his second wife, Dorothy J. Holland, and a son, Jesse Ray Holland.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol G. Paxton and Connie R. Roberts; a stepdaughter, Bernice M. Holland; four sisters; two brothers; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 6 p.m. today in Loving Funeral Home Chapel, Churchland, by Pastor Stewart McCarter, with visitation to follow until 7 p.m. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Elmwood Cemetery, Freemont, N.C.

Estelle B. Lewis

SUFFOLK -- Estelle Blowe Lewis, 69, died Sept. 14, 1999, in Obici Hospital.

Born June 2, 1930, in Ahoskie, N.C., she was the daughter of Betty Sue B. Blowe of Chesapeake and the late Wayland L. Blowe, and was the widow of James Wesley Lewis. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Leroy Blowe and Harvey Blowe. She was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church and was a retired nurse.

Survivors include her sisters, Earnestine Blowe Leicester and Ethel Blowe Fanney, both of Suffolk, and Mary Ellen Blowe Motley of Chesapeake; and her brothers, Lawrence Blowe of Annapolis, Md., and Jessie T. Blowe of Chattanooga, Tenn.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Billy P. Presley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.

Elizabeth Ann Early

WINDSOR -- Elizabeth Ann Early, 65, affectionately known as ``Mama Early," died Sept. 14, 1999, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Early was born Dec. 6, 1933, in Bertie County, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Henry Edward and Lena Mae Peede Penwell. She was a member of Antioch Congregational Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband of 41 years, James Walker Early Sr.; five daughters, Cynthia Ray of Suffolk, Beverly Jackson of Windsor, Joyce Joyner and her husband, Mike, of Franklin, Melinda Stiles and her husband, Earl, of Windsor and Patricia Early of Virginia Beach; two sons, James Walker Early Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Ahoskie, N.C., and Jeffrey Early of Norfolk; one sister, Susie Faulkner of Chester, S.C.; two brothers, Mack Penwell of Aulander, N.C., and James ``Bud" Penwell of Edenton, N.C.; seven grandchildren; and two special godchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, with the Rev. Mark Habecker officiating. Burial will be in Southampton Memorial Park.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home and suggests that memorials be made to the Arthritis Foundation, to the Diabetes. Foundation or to the Windsor Rescue Squad.

Sharon B. Blake

HERTFORD -- Sharon Brooks Blake, 41, an Army veteran, died Sept. 11, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Stallings Funeral Home.

Linwood R. Bunch

MERRY HILL -- Linwood R. Bunch, 79, of the 300 block of Old Merry Hill Road, died Sept. 13, 1999, after a short and heroic battle with cancer. He was born in Chowan County and was a member of Merry Hill Baptist Church.

A loving and dedicated husband and father, he is survived by his wife, Mae Mitchell Bunch; two daughters, Becky B. Lindsay of Elizabeth City and Ann B. Ward and her husband, Dan, of Hobbsville; one son, Bobby Bunch and his wife, Joan, of Chesapeake; a daughter-in-law, Imogene W. Bunch of Hampton; two brothers, Edward Bunch and his wife, Florence, of Windsor and Frank Bunch and his wife, Millie, of Merry Hill; six grandchildren, Amy Carter and husband, Allen, Ryan Bunch and wife, Sarah, Kelly Zagursky and husband, Keith, Freddie Bunch, Kevin Bunch and Jonathan Ward; and one great-grandchild, Katie Zagursky. Mr. Bunch was predeceased by a son, the Rev. Freddie C. Bunch, and two sisters, Essie Bunch and Pearl B. Hughes.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Merry Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Ralph Knight. Burial will follow in Edgewood Cemetery, Windsor. The family will receive friends at 346 Old Merry Hill Road. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the American Red Cross or to Merry Hill Baptist Church. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Phenix T. Dicksey

HATTERAS -- Memorial services for Phenix Taylor Dicksey, 90, scheduled for 2 p.m. today in Hatteras United Methodist Church have been canceled due to the weather and will be rescheduled at another time. Twiford's Island Chapel is in charge.
