Jennie Warren Goodwin

EDENTON -- Jennie Warren .Goodwin, 88, of the 1100 block of Macedonia Road, died Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, in the Chowan Hospital.

Mrs. Goodwin was the former owner/operator of Goodwin's Grocery Store, and was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Minnie Bennett and Charlie B. Warren and was the wife of the late Henderson Jones Goodwin.

She is survived by two sons, Wilford Goodwin and H. Ray Goodwin, both of Edenton; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Minnie Frances Goodwin.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Young. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the H. Ray Goodwin residence, 1122 Macedonia Road. Evans Funeral Home is in charge.

Erma W. Holliday

WILLIAMSTON -- Erma Gray Whitehurst Holliday, 69, died Sept. 13, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Biggs Funeral Home.

Fredena F. Hyde

COROLLA -- Fredena Fladness Hyde, 84, died Sept. 14, 1999. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo.

Robert M. Tarkington Jr.

CRESWELL -- Robert Michael Tarkington Jr., 38, died Sept. 11, 1999. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hilltop Cemetery in Colington, N.C. Twiford Funeral Home, Manteo, is in charge.

Gregory P. Gibson

NORFOLK -- Gregory Paul Gibson, 43, of the 8000 block of Wedgewood Road, died Sept. 14, 1999. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Mary L. LaRue

NORFOLK -- Mary Leftwich LaRue, 90, of the 3900 block of Llewelyn Ave., Lafayette Villa Health Care Center, died Sept. 16, 1999, at her residence.

Born in Unicoi County, Tenn., she lived in Johnson City, Tenn., until 1950. She had lived in Norfolk since 1950. She was a 1928 graduate of Happy Valley High School and attended Milligan College from 1935 to 1936. She was a Baptist and taught Sunday school to primary, intermediate and adult classes. She was the daughter of the late Millard and Lydia E. Hopson Adkins and was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Martin LaRue, in 1998. She was also predeceased by one son; three sisters; two brothers; and one grandson.

Survivors include a daughter, Marian Leftwich Pilkington of Johnson City, Tenn.; a son, Thomas Patrick LaRue of Johnson City; a sister, Norma June Adkins of Chuchey, Tenn.; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are pending with Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.

Thelma M. Midgett

NORFOLK -- Thelma Martha Midgett, 84, of 7000 Auburn Avenue, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at her residence. She was a native of Burgaw, N.C.

Survivors include her husband, Oliver G. Midgett Sr.; a daughter, Becky M. Brown of Hertford, N.C.; a son, Oliver G. Midgett Jr. and his wife, Linda, of Chesapeake; and three grandchildren, Erik Midgett, Cameron Midgett and Dale Brown.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Meadowbrook Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Alan Gibson with entombment in the mausoleum. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is in charge.

Henry Rhodes Jr.

NORFOLK -- Henry Rhodes Jr. of the 700 block of Maryland Ave. died Sept. 11, 1999. A funeral will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. today at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk.

Thomas M. Ridley

NORFOLK -- Thomas M. Ridley, formerly of 1412 Mellon St., died Sept. 3, 1999. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Leroy Hines Sr.

PORTSMOUTH -- Leroy Hines Sr., 66, formerly of Portsmouth, died Sept. 7, 1999, in Brooklyn, N.Y. Born in Rocky Mount, N.C., he was formerly employed by Portsmouth Brake Shoe Factory.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Hines of Brooklyn and Vicky Hines of Tarboro, N.C.; three sons, Elwin L. Hines Sr. and Vernon A. Hines, both of Portsmouth and Leroy Hines Jr. of Brooklyn; four sisters, Carlena Hines Covington of Brooklyn, Shirley Mae Hines of Queens, N.Y., Ethel Curtis of Lithonia, Ga., Annie B. Wiggins of Washington, D.C.; three brothers, William Hines Jr. of Portsmouth, Clarence Hines of Winston-Salem, N.C., and George E. Hines of Rocky Mount, N.C.; two grandchildren; and a host of other relatives.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Sinai Church by the Rev. Richie Sessoms Sr. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will be at 306 Fort Lane. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

Paul O. Powell

PORTSMOUTH -- Paul Otis Powell, 71, of the 2600 block of Belle St., passed away suddenly on Sept. 14, 1999, at his residence.

He was born in Warrenton County, N.C., and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He received his formal education from the Warrenton County school system. For 26 years he worked full-time at Planters Manufacturing Co., now known as Georgia Pacific, and part-time for Star Band, now known as General Foam Plastics Corp. In 1976, he went to work at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1994 from the shipyard as a Shop 72 Rigger with many awards, plaques and a clock recognizing him for excellent job performance.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walter J. and Lillie Hicks Powell; five brothers, Walter Jr., Will, Eugene, Lewis, John and Perry; two sisters, Lois and Anna Mary; and an infant son, Paul O. Powell Jr.

Mr. Powell is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mattie J. Powell; five daughters, Gladys Powell Gray and her husband, Gilmer, of Portsmouth, Lillian Powell Williams and her husband, Herman, of Newport News, Edna Powell Spearman of District Heights, Md., Carolyn Powell Wilson and her husband, Donald, of Portsmouth, and Felicia Powell Jeans of Portsmouth; two sons, James O. Powell of Portsmouth and Mark A. Powell of Maryland; 19 grandchildren, Paula Coleman and her husband, Cornelius, Donna Spearman, Angela Williams, Paul Spearman, Joseph Gray, Shawanda Williams, Antwaun Powell, Tenisha Spearman, Maurice Powell, Melissa Powell, Kimberly Gray, Patrice Powell, Patrick Powell, James Powell Jr., Ebone Powell, Mark Powell Jr., Dominique Jeans, Dontrae Jeans and Marquise Powell; six great-grandchildren, CaShea, Demonte, Shakilya, Keyanna, Troy, Danielle and William; two brothers, Deacon George W. Powell of Portsmouth and Elder James H. Powell of Chesapeake; a sister, Lillian Frances Taylor of New York; a brother-in-law, James Faulkner of North Carolina; five sisters-in-law, Bessie M. Powell of Portsmouth, Laura L. Williams of Sickleville, N.J., Ruby Powell of Landover, Md., Mary G. Powell of North Carolina and Ruby Dean Powell of Baltimore; an uncle, Walter Bernice Hicks and his wife, LouEllen Hicks of Palmer Springs, Va.; and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will accept visits and calls at the home of Cornelius and Paula Coleman at 4092 Longpoint Blvd., Portsmouth, Va., 757-484-2367.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Corprew Funeral Chapel where a chapel service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Terry J. Reel and Minister Joyce K. Martin will assist the officiating clergy. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will assemble for the procession at 1 p.m. Saturday at the family home, 2617 Belle St., Portsmouth. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

John J. DePool

VIRGINIA BEACH -- John Joseph DePool, 72, of the 500 block of Crosby Road died Sept. 12, 1999, at Spartanburg, S.C.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. DePool was a retired chief petty officer from the U.S. Navy after 32 years and was also a retired lieutenant from the Norfolk Sheriff's Department after 14 years. He was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 5 for more than 25 years; American Legion, D.A.V.; Fraternal Order of Police, Sewells Point Lodge No. 28; and Irish American Society of Virginia. He was also a member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

Mr. DePool is survived by his wife, Adda J. DePool; sister-in-law, Karin Skorupski and her husband, Frank, of Nashua, N.H.; and his nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Colonial Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Transportation Fund of the Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320.

He will be greatly missed by his friends.

Iris J. Hutton

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Iris Jean Hutton died Sept. 15, 1999, at her home.

A member of Faith Baptist Church in Norfolk, Mrs. Hutton will be remembered as one who spent her life serving the Lord and as a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother.

She was predeceased by her parents, Admond and Lena Phelps; her in-laws, Ivan and Hazel Hutton; and a grandson, Jason Hutton. Survivors include her husband, Tom Hutton of the home; three sons and their wives, Tom Jr. and Marica Hutton of Grand Forks, N.D., Donald and Terry Hutton, and David and Patty Hutton, all of Chesapeake; a daughter and her husband, Judy and Bob Shipton of Portsmouth; four sisters; two brothers; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Altmeyer Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Calvary Temple in Norfolk. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.

Paul J. Moffat Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Paul James Moffat Jr., 72, formerly of Pittsburgh, died Sept. 14, 1999. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrews United Methodist Church. Smith & Williams Funeral Home Kempsville Chapel is in charge.

Brian L. Reed

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Brian LaVon Reed, 19, of the 2100 block of Margaret Drive, was taken suddenly and swiftly from his family and loved ones Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital as a result of an aneurysm.

A native of Norfolk, he was the son of Elwood L. and Mary Baker Reed. Brian was a student at Ferrum College, where he was a sophomore majoring in computer science and information systems and played on the basketball and football teams. He was a member of New Calvary Baptist Church. A graduate of Salem High School, he also played football and basketball there. He was a member of Cooperating Hampton Roads Organization for Minorities in Engineering (CHROME), Future Business Leaders of America and the Black Culture Club.

Brian will be sorely missed by his parents, Elwood L. and Mary Baker Reed, and a sister, Kalisha M. Reed, all of the home. He will also be missed by his maternal grandmother, Rosina Robinson, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at New Calvary Baptist Church, 800 E. Virginia Beach Blvd., by the Rev. G.G. Campbell. Burial will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Riddick Funeral Service, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Abraham Rosenthal

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Master Chief Abraham ``Rosy" Rosenthal, 72, died Sept. 12, 1999, in Spartanburg, S.C.

He was a native of Winthrop, Mass., and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1944. One of Rosy's early assignments was in Germany where he met and married Monica Ann Lucas. Following his retirement from the Navy after 31 years of service, he worked for 14 years at QED.

Rosy was an officer of the Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge No. 220, A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Shrine Khedive Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., where he was active in the clown unit. Rosy dearly loved children and always enjoyed entertaining them as a clown. He was also a member of the Norfolk Scottish Rite Bodies; Milburn Chapter No. 570, Order of the Eastern Star; Loyal Order of the Moose, No. 39; D.A.V.; and a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

He was also vitally interested in the Shriners Children's Hospital. Rosy spent his retirement years transporting sick and needy children from Norfolk to the Shriners Hospital in Greenville, S.C. Rosy made 106 trips to transport children and it was on one of these trips that he was involved in a fatal accident.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Monica; his son, Donald Hans Rosenthal; his daughter-in-law, Terry; his grandchildren, Donald Hans Rosenthal Jr. and his wife, Chasity, Gina Fisher and her husband, Allen, and Lisa Gannon and her husband, Patrick; and his great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Alex Fisher and Connor Gannon.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, by Rabbi Israel Zoberman with Masonic rites to follow. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park with military honors.

Rosy will be deeply missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, his family requests that any donations be made to the transportation fund of the Khedive Temple, 645 Woodlake Drive, Chesapeake, VA 23320.
