George J. Troffer

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Retired U.S. Navy Capt. George J. Troffer, 71, died Sept. 15, 1999, in a local hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Mr. Troffer was born Dec. 13, 1927, in St. Petersburg, Fla. He was a member of Church of the Holy Apostles and was an active member of the Reach Program, a member of the Great Neck Writers Group and the Great Neck Book Club Review. He served as vice president of the Mended Hearts Chapter of Virginia Beach and was also the Eastern Division governor of Toastmasters International.

Mr. Troffer enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 where he was a sailor for three years. He was then appointed to the Naval Academy and graduated in 1952. Mr. Troffer served in World War II where he received the Victory Medal. He also served in the Korean conflict, receiving the Korean Service Medal and Star, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the United Nations Service Medal. He was the electrical officer on the USS Triton, which was the first submarine to go around the world without surfacing. He was then executive officer on board the Navy Fleet Ballistic Nuclear Submarine, the Thomas A. Edison. George Troffer served 32 honorable years in the U.S. Navy.

He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Alice Jean Troffer; his daughters, Deborah A. Ginsburg of Wausau, Wis., Alysson M. Troffer and husband, Timothy Clemmer, of Flagstaff, Ariz., Valerie L. Moeller and husband, Bryan, of Marion, Iowa, and Rebecca G. Basara and husband, Gregory, of Fresno, Calif.; brothers and sister, Lawrence Troffer of Sarasota, Fla., Rosemary Griggs of Layton, Utah, and William Troffer of New York City; and eight grandchildren. He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia Troffer.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Church of the Holy Apostles by Fr. Charles Faul and Fr. David Lassalle, presiding. The family will receive friends at the church prior to the service beginning at 6 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Rosewood Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Ernest L. Waller III

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ernest ``Shampoo" Lee Waller III, 29, of the 5500 block of Hollowed Hall Drive, passed away Sept. 12, 1999, in Norfolk. He was a member of New Jerusalem Family Church in Portsmouth. He will be greatly missed for he was loved by many.

He is survived by his wife, Tyronicia L. Waller of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Ashley Moore of Portsmouth; a son, Ernest ``E.J." Lee Waller IV of Virginia Beach; mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Edith and William Scott of Norfolk; his father, Ernest Lee Waller II of Virginia Beach; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Tyrone Staton of Portsmouth; a sister, Dionne Hughes of Atlanta; two brothers, Antonio Waller of Norfolk and Dion Cameron of Portsmouth; a niece, Alexus Waller; maternal grandmother, Mary Jackson; eight brothers-in-law; two sisters-in-law; uncles, aunts, cousins and a host of friends, including a special friend, Timothy Montgomery.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday at New Jerusalem Family Church, 715 Summers Place, Portsmouth, by Antonio Stephens, presiding pastor. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, will begin at 10 a.m. today. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Ida M. Brown

SUFFOLK -- Ida Mae Brown, 88, of the 6400 block of Crittenden Road. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Diamond Grove Baptist Church. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.

Estelle B. Lewis

SUFFOLK -- Funeral services for Estelle B. Lewis will be held at 11 a.m. today in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home instead of the cemetery.

Bennett A. Webber

SUFFOLK -- Bennett A. Webber, 73, of the 500 block of Lake Kilby Road, died Sept. 15, 1999.

He was a native of Bedford, Va., and retired in 1981 as an electronic technician for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Portsmouth. He also retired as an aviation electronic chief after 22 years of service in the U.S. Navy having served during World War II and the Korean War. He was the son of the late Virginia Hurst Webber and Walter Webber. He was a member of Nansemond Masonic Lodge No. 77 and Patrol Squadron VP-74.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann Baker Webber of Suffolk; a sister, Annis Pentecost of Roanoke, Va.; and a brother, William M. Webber of Salem, Va.

A graveside service with military and masonic honors will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Holly Lawn Cemetery by Minister Jacob Thacker. Friends may join the family at the residence, 534 Lake Kilby Road. Contributions may be made to Nansemond Masonic Lodge No. 77 Building Fund, 5681 Lee Farm Lane, Suffolk VA 23435. Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Trudi Blount

SMITHFIELD -- Trudi Blount, 32, died Sept. 15, 1999, in St. Mary Hospital, Richmond.

Trudi was a native of Smithfield, a graduate of Old Dominion University and a member of Mount Olive Baptist Church, Petersburg. Miss Blount was a vice president of operations at NationsBank.

She is survived by her parents, Thoran H. Sr. and Marion E. Blount of Smithfield; two sisters, Gina B. Jones and her husband, Warren, of Carrollton, and Melissa Blount of Norfolk; a brother, Theron H. Blount Jr. of Smithfield; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Main Street Baptist Church, Smithfield. Burial will be in Baptist Memorial Cemetery. Viewing will be today at Mount Olive Baptist Church, Petersburg, and also at the church one hour before the service on Saturday. Pretlow & Chapman Funeral Home, Smithfield, is in charge.

Oscar L. Veney Jr.

PARKSLEY -- Oscar L. Veney Jr., 46, died Sept. 10, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wharton Funeral Home, Accomac.

Nellie S. Harrell

HERTFORD -- Nellie Sawyer Harrell, 83, of Route 6, died Sept. 15, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Berea Church of Christ. Swindell Funeral Home is in charge.

Louise W. Krauss

CAMDEN COUNTY -- Louise Williams Krauss, 96, of the 200 block of Palmer Road, died Sept. 15, 1999. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in New Hollywood Cemetery, Elizabeth City. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City, is in charge.

Sophia W. Kindley

CHESAPEAKE -- Sophia Wallace Kindley, 84, of the 1400 block of Perry St., died Sept. 18, 1999.

She was born in Princess Anne County, and was the widow of Norman Benjamin Kindley. She was a retired seamstress. She was a member of Providence Baptist Church, Chesapeake, and the Niners Senior Citizens Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Jean Dykes of Virginia Beach; three sons, Thomas Wallace of Virginia Beach, Jessie B. Kindley of Norfolk and Norman ``Buddy" Kindley of Chesapeake; a sister, Rosa White of Kitty Hawk, N.C.; a brother, John Leonard Wallace of Virginia Beach; five half-sisters; two half-brothers; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Kindley was preceded in death by two daughters, Laura Scott Love and Annie Scott Love, and two sons, George Love Jr. and Lewis Love.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Ron N. Heath. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, and at 3132 Manatee Drive, Virginia Beach, at all other times.

Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Baptist Church, 501 Providence Road, Chesapeake, VA 23325.

Sharon L. Robinson

CHESAPEAKE -- Sharon L. Robinson, 24, of the 3100 block of Kemet Road, passed away Sept. 13, 1999.

She is survived by her parents, Christene Robinson and Isiah A. Robinson Jr. of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jewellett M. Turley of Fredericksburg, Va.; two brothers, Isiah A. Robinson VII and Johnathan Robinson, both of Virginia Beach; her grandparents, Jessie M. Pitt, Isiah A. Robinson V and Shirley M. Wilson, all of Norfolk; a nephew; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Chesapeake Christian Center. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge of arrangements.

Alice V. Sanders

CHESAPEAKE -- Alice Virginia Sanders, 84, of the 600 block of Mill Landing Road, died Sept. 19, 1999.

Mrs. Sanders was born in Brookneal, Va., and was the daughter of the late Samuel Richard and Gracie Lee Hamlette Saunders. She was the widow of Grover C. Sanders Jr. and a member of Bethel Baptist Church in Chesapeake and the Mary Willford Circle of Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy Harshaw of Charleston, S.C., and Susan Mobley of Chesapeake; a son, Grover C. Sanders III of Highland Springs, Va.; a sister, Arlene Roark of Chesapeake; two brothers, S.R. Saunders of Brookneal and Harry Elmo Saunders of Byers, Okla.; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Oman Funeral Home Chapel, Great Bridge, with Dr. H.R. ``Chip" Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

Deborah A. Savoy

CHESAPEAKE -- Deborah Ann.Savoy, 49, of the 2600 block of Roundtree Circle, died Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, in her residence.

She was a native of Orangeburg, S.C., and was the wife of Sid Savoy. She retired as a telephone operator from AT&T after 30 years of service. She was a member of Cradock Baptist Church and the Communication Workers of America.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a daughter, Amber D. Savoy of Chesapeake; her aunts, Nell Mace of Aiken, S.C., and Ruth Benjamin of Orangeburg; an uncle, Fred Johnson of Orangeburg; a brother, David M. Leitch of Aiken; and a grandchild, Isaiah K. Durham.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Cradock Baptist Church by Dr. David Denny. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel.

Velma V. Banton

NORFOLK -- Velma V. Banton of the 2800 block of Dunkirk Ave. died Sept. 17, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Greater Metropolitan AME Zion Church, Brambleton Avenue. Fitchett Funeral Home is in charge.

Sandy E. Knight

NORFOLK -- Sandy Edward ``Sonnie Boy" Knight of the 2700 block of Dunkirk Ave. died Sept. 19, 1999, in the Hampton Veteran's Hospital.

Services will be announced by Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

Angela Rose

NORFOLK -- Angela ``Angie" Rose, 31, of the 2700 block of E. Princess Anne Road, died Sept. 15, 1999, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

She was born in Portsmouth and was employed by the STOP organization. She was a member of St. Mark's RZUA in Norfolk. She was predeceased by her father, William H. Williams.

Survivors include a daughter, Ciara Marie Rose; two sons, Anthony Renaldo Williams and Thomas Elver Rose Jr.; her mother, Hattie Jones-Williams; two brothers, Maurice Anthony Jones and Kenyon Darnell Jones; her grandmother, Vivian Williams; aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces, great-nieces and.-nephews; and a special friend, Kevin Mapp.

A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday in St. Mark's RZUA by Dwayne Gary. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
