Blanche Eugenia Steele

NORFOLK -- Blanche Eugenia Steele, 92, entered into rest Sept. 4, 1999. She was born in Portsmouth to the late Eugene Small Munden and Deanie Jones Munden. She retired from the W.T. Grant Co. after more than a quarter-century of service.

She was a graduate of South Norfolk High School. She was a Methodist, and dedicated herself to her faith, her son, and her friends. She was preceded in death by a beloved sister, Julia Munden Wells.

She is survived by her son, Dr. James E. Steele of Norfolk; two nephews, Harry Otis Wells of Waymart, Pa., and Gerald Lee Wells and his wife, Jacqueline, of Richmond.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. Donald J. Dunlap.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Altmeyer Funeral Home. They will receive friends at 5017 Finn Road, Virginia Beach, after 2 p.m. today and may be reached at 460-3689 at that time.

Emily M. Wagner

NORFOLK -- Emily M. Wagner, 83, of the 7700 block of Bergen St., died Sept. 4, 1999, in a local nursing home.

Born in Woonsocket, R.I., she was the widow of James H. Wagner, and a Catholic. Mrs. Wagner served as a WAC during World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Susan K. Fentress, and her husband, Harry A. Fentress, of Virginia Beach; a son, James R., and his wife, Cathy A. Wagner, of White Stone, Va.; three sisters, Stasla Schuttert of Norfolk, Wanda Caulfield of West Shokan, N.Y., and Helen Burghardt of Moonachie, N.J.; a brother, Joseph Jemski of Frederick, Md.; and three grandchildren, Shelley K. Fentress, C. Chesley Fentress and James B. Wagner.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and will return to her daughter's home following the service.

Samuel W. Goldstein

PORTSMOUTH -- Samuel William Goldstein, 87, of Russell Street, died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, in his home.

He was a native of Chicago, a son of the late Max and Rose Goldstein. He was the former owner of Kings Market, and was an employee of the Chicago Post Office for 15 years. He was a member of the Gomley Chesed Synagogue and its Men's Club, the Gomley Chesed Chevrah Kadisha Committee, an active volunteer of the Brandeis Club, Portsmouth Senior Citizens Program and Beazley Senior Citizens Club. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, and was a member of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 453. He was an avid bridge player and was most proud of achieving American Contract Bridge Life Master in 1998.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mildred Goldfarb Goldstein; two sons, Kenneth Goldstein and his wife, Hilde, of Mannheim, Germany, and Marshall Goldstein and his wife, Vivian, of Reston, Va.; a brother, Robert Goldstein of Skokie, Ill.; a brother-in-law, Joseph Goldfarb and his wife, Faye, of Los Angeles; many nieces and nephews, including Dr. Theodore Goldstein of Beverly Hills, Calif.; and two grandchildren, Kari and Andrew Goldstein of Reston.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in Gomley Chesed Cemetery by Rabbi Philip S. Krohn. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gomley Chesed Synagogue or to the Myasthena Gravis Foundation. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, is handling arrangements.

William F. Schiemann

PORTSMOUTH -- William F. ``Bill" Schiemann of the 5900 block of Arden St. died Sept. 5, 1999.

Mr. Schiemann was born Feb. 19, 1911, and was a lifelong resident of Portsmouth. He was the son of the late Lewis J. and Dorothy Carty Schiemann. Bill was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Hall Schiemann. He retired as captain from the Portsmouth Fire Department with 27 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the Sunbeam Hunt Club.

He leaves behind a sister, Margaret S. Shank of Virginia Beach; two daughters, Billie S. Reid of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., and Loxie S. Blick and husband, Ron, of Portsmouth. He was also known as ``Daddy Bill" to his loving grandchildren, grandson Robert W. Reid and wife, Nancy, of Windsor and four granddaughters, Rhonda F. Coleman and husband, Jeff H., of Portsmouth, Susan M. Bachman and husband, Kenneth R., of Suffolk, Sharon L. Majewski and husband, Joseph M., of Virginia Beach and Donna Knott of Austel, Ga. He also leaves behind three great-granddaughters, Megan E. Reid of Chesapeake, Tessa N. and Tori A. Majewski of Virginia Beach; and a great-grandson, William R. Bachman of Suffolk; and numerous nieces, nephews, friends and loved ones.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sept. 18 in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens Chapel, Suffolk. Friends may visit the family at 5910 Arden St., Portsmouth, VA 23703. Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

S. Nicholas Xenakis

PORTSMOUTH -- Sabbas Nicholas Xenakis, 73, of the 5300 block of Greenbrook Drive, died Sunday, Sept. 5, 1999.

He was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Manhattan, N.Y., and was predeceased by a son, Christopher V. Xenakis.

He was a charter student of the Bronx High School of Science from which he graduated at the age of 16 and then served with the U.S.N.C.B. in the South Pacific in World War II. He attended City College of New York and graduated from the Syracuse University School of Engineering with honors.

Mr. Xenakis was the manager of engineering and retired from General Electric after 40 years of service. He held leadership roles and was active in fraternal, church, community and civic organizations. He was a fourth degree member and past Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus, Prince of Peace Council.

Nick was a dad who gave constant counsel to his seven children, who in turn have great love, pride and admiration for him.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, of 48 years; two daughters, Anna Maria Xenakis of Centerville, Va., and Barbara Ann Gayle and husband, Bryan, of Suffolk; four sons, Nicholas and wife, Linda, of Virginia Beach, Anthony and wife, Lorie, of Portsmouth, Vincent and wife, Jeanie, of Portsmouth, and John J. Xenakis of Kill Devil Hills, N.C. He leaves 10 loving grandchildren, Jeremiah, Michelle, Diane, Jessica, Laura, Joshua, Nicholas, Gina, John and Christopher; and a great-grandson, Nicholas.

Nick Xenakis will also be remembered for his integrity, caring and quick wit by a host of extended family and friends.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at the Church of the Resurrection at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. James V. Carr, with a reception to follow at church. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Foster Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the World War II Memorial Fund and Alzheimer's Association.

Tyler Reed Gibeson
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Tyler Reed Gibeson, infant son of Danielle Scott and Reuben J. Gibeson, passed away Sept. 3, 1999.
He is also survived by his brother, Marcus Gibeson; his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Chick; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Galen Gibeson; his aunts, Angela Chick, Elizabeth Dickson and Rebecca Silvey; and uncles, Noah Gibeson and Aaron Gibeson.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Rosewood Memorial Park.

Mary Jo W. Glover

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Jo White Glover, 71, of the 6400 block of Auburn Drive, died Sept. 4, 1999, in a local hospital.

She was born in Northfork, W.Va., and retired from W.M. Stone as an import broker. She also retired from Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church as a choir director and organist. She was very active in the presbytery. She was also a former organist at Cradock Presbyterian Church and Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church. She received her master's degree in music from Queens College in Charlotte, N.C.

Survivors include two daughters, Lisa Glover Wilkins of Chesapeake and Rebecca Glover Russell of Pennsauken, N.J.; two sons, David Alan Glover of Virginia Beach and Steven Ray Glover of Portsmouth; two brothers, the Rev. Walter W. White of Summersville, W.Va., and J. Randy White of Calhoun, Ga.; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Squires Memorial Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Richard Lovingood and Dr. Richard Keever. Burial will be in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. today in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

James H. McGarry

VIRGINIA BEACH -- James H. McGarry, 86, passed away Sept. 3, 1999. He was a resident of Atria Hilltop in Virginia Beach.

Mr. McGarry was born in Toronto, Canada. He had a long and distinguished career in the electronics industry. Over the years, he rose from his first position on the production line at Sentinel Radio Corp. to hold many senior management positions, including vice president of ITT Federal Laboratories and later senior vice president of operations at the General Instrument Corporation. While at General Instrument, Mr. McGarry headed up the establishment of General Instrument's first semiconductor manufacturing facility, located in Chandler, Ariz.

Mr. McGarry retired in Mesa, Ariz., in 1985 where he lived until 1998. While retired, he continued his passion for painting and golf.

Mr. McGarry is survived by his sister, Gwen Levine of Chicago; three sons, James H. McGarry of the Bahamas, Patrick E. McGarry of Paterson, N.J., and Timothy L. McGarry and his wife, Nancy, of West Linn., Ore.; and two daughters and their husbands, Judith A. and William F. Marx of Virginia Beach and Marilyn and John R. Green of Glen Rock, N.J.; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, 1264 N. Great Neck Road, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. Burial will be at Princess Anne Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on behalf of Mr. McGarry to the Marty Lyon's Foundation for terminally or chronically ill children, 333 Earle Orington Blvd., Suite 600, Michel Field, NY 11553.

Judson W. Nixon

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Judson W. ``Jay" Nixon, 72, died Sept. 5, 1999, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

Mr. Nixon was born in Portsmouth and retired as a data processing manager for the city of Norfolk. He was a member of Haygood United Methodist Church. He graduated from Granby High School and attended the Norfolk Division of William and Mary. He served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He organized the Hampton Roads chapter of the Data Processing Management Association, and was twice past president. He was an avid golfer and, after retirement, he worked at the Cavalier and Princess Anne golf courses.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Cassida Nixon; two daughters, Judy Mumma and her husband, Ed, of Virginia Beach, and Beth Hazelette and her husband, John, of Norfolk; and a grandson, Evan Mumma of Virginia Beach.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Alan Reifsnyder. The family will visit with friends at the graveside. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Haygood United Methodist Church. Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.

Florence L. Southard

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Florence.Leveridge Southard, 88, of the 1600 block of Janke Road, passed away Sept. 5, 1999.

She was born in Plainfield, N.J., and was preceded in death by her husband, Albert W. Southard.

Survivors include a daughter, Sue Ann Hansen, and her husband, Jim, of Williams, Ariz.; a son, Thomas W. Southard, and his wife, Gloria, of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family will hold a private gathering later in the month for family and friends. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Fire and Rescue, 2444 Pleasure House Road, Virginia Beach, VA 23455. Altmeyer Funeral Home handled the arrangements. William A. Spangler Sr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William Ambrose Spangler Sr., 79, died Sept. 4, 1999. Burial will be on Sept. 14, 1999, in Susquehanna Memorial Gardens in York, Pa. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is in charge locally.

Larry Allen Stone

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Larry Allen Stone, 30, lost his life in a training accident on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999.

He was a member of the U.S. Navy Seal Team 2, Little Creek Amphibious Base in Norfolk. He attended Granby High School and Virginia military Institute, Class of 1992.

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving parents, Edward Carl Stone III and Syble Butler Stone of Norfolk. He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Kathy Stone of Virginia Beach; his paternal grandmother, Waldo A. Stone of Elizabeth City, N.C.; his fiancee, Sonia Bright of Arlington, Va.; and many loving friends and family.

A memorial service with military honors will be held for Allen at Little Creek Chapel at 4 p.m. Tuesday. A private military service will follow to return his ashes to the sea off Hatteras Island, N.C. Friends and family will be at the home of his parents, 6846 Fordwick Drive, Norfolk. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, P.O. Box 3312, Merrifield, VA 22116-3312, in remembrance and celebration of Allen's life.
