Kazimir Topolcic

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Kazimir Topolcic, 80, a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, died in Massachusetts on Aug. 31, 1999.

He was the widower of Vera Topolcic. He was born in Croatia and was a retired engineer from Wang Laboratories Inc.

Survivors include sons, Claudio and Dario Topolcic; brother, George Topolcic; sister-in-law, Irene Topolcic; and daughters-in-law, Julia Yoshida and Andrea Topolcic.

Mary H. Thomas

SUFFOLK -- Mary Lou Holyfield Thomas of Chuckatuck died Saturday, Sept. 4, 1999, in Morehead City, N.C., after a brief illness.

Mrs. Thomas was born Nov. 3, 1924, in Vicksburg, Miss., the daughter of the late Milton and Hallie Holyfield. She lived most of her life in the Chuckatuck area. She was a devoted member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Suffolk, where she sang in the choir for 47 years. She was a longtime volunteer in Suffolk's public library, a member and past president of the Junto Women's Club, and a member of several bridge clubs. She was a beloved wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a devoted friend who will be remembered and missed by all who knew and loved her.

Survivors include her devoted husband, Dr. Philip R. Thomas Sr. of Chuckatuck; five children, Mary Randolph Garland and her husband, Malcolm, of Smyrna, N.C., Dr. Geoffrey H. Thomas and his wife, Mary, of Gloucester, Va., Philip R. Thomas Jr. and his wife, Anne, of Chuckatuck, Stephen M. Thomas of Chuckatuck and his wife, Gail, and Katherine Anne Youngk and her husband, Charles, of Hobson, Va.; several grandchildren, Chandler Garland, Claire and Geoffrey Thomas Jr., Kathy Smith, Angela Cooper, Donald Thomas, Brannon, Hallie and Caleb Thomas, and Katie Youngk; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; her sister, Eleanor Powell of Louisiana; and her sisters-in-law, Jane Levinson of Suffolk and Katherine Howard of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by a grandson, Nathanael Garland, and three brothers.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Suffolk by the Rev. Vance Mann. Entombment will follow at Meadowbrook Mausoleum. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at R.W. Baker Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Paul's Episcopal Church Choir, Suffolk.

Lillian E. Artis

CAPRON -- Lillian Evans Artis of the 23000 block of Church St. died Sept. 3, 1999, in Southampton Memorial Hospital, Franklin.

She was a native of Southampton County, and was the wife of Junious P. Artis. She was a homemaker and was a member of Mount Tabor Baptist Church, Newsoms, and its senior choir for more than 40 years.

Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, James Artis of Brooklyn, N.Y., and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Mount Tabor Baptist Church by the Rev. R.S. Steele. Burial will be in Pine Level Cemetery, Capron. Wm. M. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home Inc. is in charge.

Katherine H. Partin

CHERITON -- Katherine H. Partin, 74, died Sept. 5, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Charles Catholic Church. Fox and Scott Funeral Home, Cape Charles, is in charge.

Paul E. Stevens

HACKS NECK -- Paul Errington Stevens, 68, died Sept. 4, 1999. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Williams-Onancock Funeral Home.

Marvin A. Bryan

EDENTON -- Marvin A. ``Johnny" Bryan, 71, of the 100 block of Country Club Drive, died Sept. 4, 1999. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Edenton United Methodist Church. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.

Marie J. Clay

CRESWELL -- Marie Jolly Clay, 93, died Sept. 4, 1999. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Union Memorial Gardens, Union, S.C. Walker Funeral Home, Columbia, is in charge.

Peggie T. Copeland

CHESAPEAKE -- Loving wife, mother and grandmother Peggie Thornton Copeland, 52, of the 1400 block of Black Walnut Court, died Sept. 20, 1999, in Richmond.

Born in Elm City, N.C., she was a member of Freedom Baptist Church, Chesapeake.

Survivors include her husband, Floyd H. ``Bo" Copeland; a daughter, Keilani Copeland; a son, Floyd H. Copeland III; her mother, Grace Huffman Spencer, all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Elizabeth Faye Bartlett of La Grange, N.C., and Lila McCoy of Virginia Beach; a brother, Warren D. Thornton of Rodney, Mich.; and a granddaughter, Skylar Anne Copeland.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, by Pastor Daniel Lee Steinman. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at funeral home and at the residence at all other times.

Velma E. Dowdy

CHESAPEAKE -- Velma Ernestine Dowdy, 71, died Sept. 20, 1999. Mrs. Dowdy was born in Kitty Hawk, N.C.

She was a counselor for the Christian Broadcasting Network and a homemaker. Mrs. Dowdy was also a member of Great Bridge Baptist Church, the Christian Women's Club and the Joy Sunday School class. She was the daughter of the late Ivey and Elnora Dowdy and the wife of Lindsey Lee Dowdy Jr. of the home.

Besides her husband, Mrs. Dowdy is survived by one daughter, Dolores Dail and her husband, Thomas, of Norfolk; two sons, Randy Thomas Dowdy and his wife, Nancy, of Baltimore, M.D., and Lindsey Lee Dowdy III of San Diego, Calif.; seven grandchildren, James, Aaron and Michael Kovach of Norfolk, Nathan, Andrew and Lindsey Dowdy of Baltimore, Rachel Eckard of Virginia Beach; and one great-grandchild, Hope Eckard of Virginia Beach.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday in Twiford Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Charles Moseley officiating. Graveside services will follow at 2 p.m. in the Austin Cemetery, Kitty Hawk, N.C. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Gladys F. Grandy

CHESAPEAKE -- Gladys F. Grandy of the 1700 block of Atlantic Ave. died Sept. 19, 1999, at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Norfolk County, she was a retired school teacher from Chesapeake public schools and a member of Covenant Fellowship Church in Chesapeake. She was the widow of Henry Grandy and was also predeceased by her parents, Laura Ferebee and Isaiah Ferebee.

She is survived by her sister, Marion F. Smith of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Thursday at Galilee Baptist Church, Chesapeake, with Pastor Kevin R. White officiating and Pastor J. Terry Wingate of Washington, D.C., assisting. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will assemble at 845 Parapet Road, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Herman Massey

CHESAPEAKE -- Herman Massey of the 2700 block of Timber Lane died Sept. 18, 1999, at DePaul Hospital.

Born in Rochester, N.Y., Mr. Massey was retired from Dixie Manufacturing Co.

He is survived by his wife, Thornia Massey; two daughters, Wanda Massey of Baltimore, and Sonya Massey of Chesapeake; a son, John ``Joe" Massey; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sandra Massey.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. James United Holy Church of America by Elder Thompson. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Chatman/E.A. Hughes Funeral Home.

Drexel L. Hooper

CHESAPEAKE -- Drexel L. Hooper died Sept. 15, 1999.

He was born March 12, 1912, in Altoona, Ala. He was a World War II veteran and a retired chief petty officer from the Navy after 24 years of service. He also retired from BeLo Co. in Norfolk.

Mr. Hooper was predeceased by a daughter, Carolyn Hooper Tolston, two brothers and two sisters. He is survived by a daughter, Janice Hooper; a brother, Fred Hooper; two grandchildren, David Tolston and Ann Tolston Birkhead; and two great-grandchildren, Carolyn and Nicholas Birkhead.

The memorial service will be private. The cremains will be scattered at sea by the U.S. Navy. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or to the American Heart Fund. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is in charge.

Thomas H. Paulsen

CHESAPEAKE -- Thomas Halvor Paulsen, 61, died Sept. 19, 1999. Mr. Paulsen retired from the U.S. Navy after 28 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Nancy L. Paulsen; a daughter, Lauren E. McNeely and her husband, Dennis; two sons, T. Scott Paulsen and his wife, Rita, Timothy A. Paulsen and his wife, Jamie; mother-in-law, Irene Davis; five grandchildren; and two sisters, Cynthia Galford and Judith Haugen.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Centerville Baptist Church, Centerville Turnpike S., by the Rev. David Shelton and the Rev. Charles Sneed. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Transplant Emergency Fund, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

M. Anne Reed

CHESAPEAKE -- Margret Anne Reed, 44, of the 1800 block of Centerville Turnpike, died Sept. 17, 1999, in a Richmond hospital.

Mrs. Reed was born in Dunoon, Scotland, and was the daughter of the late William and Janet Patterson Reid. She had been employed with Food Lion grocery stores for more than 11 years and had been the assistant deli manager of the Cape Shores, Virginia Beach, store.

Survivors include her husband, Tom Reed, and her daughter, Nicole Reed, both of Chesapeake; two sons, Thomas Reed of Virginia Beach and William Reed, also of Chesapeake; three sisters, Janet Mormando of Virginia Beach, Elaine Wilbert of Ohio and June Hamerla of Illinois; a brother, John Knox of Scotland; and two grandchildren, Crystal Jarvis and Katherine Reed.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Oman Funeral Home Chapel, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Tom Mercer. Interment will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
