Pearl G. Singletary

CHESAPEAKE -- Pearl Gordon Singletary, 92, of the 800 block of Hillwell Road, died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1998, in Jacksonville, Fla.

A native of Galax, Va., she was the daughter of the late Prince Albert and Eva Reavis Gordon, and the widow of Harley Singletary. She was a member of the Great Bridge Evangelical Free Church, the Daughters of America, American Association of Retired People, Chesapeake Senior Citizens, and TOPS FL-489 Jacksonville.

She is survived by a daughter, Helen Singletary Hamilton of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Hardin Gordon of Richmond; a granddaughter, Lisa G. Hamilton and her husband, Robert E. Durham, of Jacksonville, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Laura Leigh Hamilton; and one great-great-grandson, Joey Hamilton, both of Miramar, Fla.

She was predeceased by a brother, M.D. Gordon; two sisters, Thelma Moorer and Hallie Litz; a son-in-law, Warren C. Hamilton; and grandson, W. Scott Hamilton.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, by the Rev. Jim Hunnewell. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m.

Robert L. Collins Sr.

NORFOLK -- Robert L. Collins Sr. of the 700 block of St. Paul's Blvd. died Sept. 6, 1998, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Born in Norfolk, he was the widower of Odell Evans Collins. He was a private contractor for Norfolk Naval Base and a member of Faith Community Non-Denominational Church.

Survivors include his two sons, Robert L. Collins Jr. of Prince George County, Va., and Maurice Collins of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Misty Kay Ridley and Robert Collins III; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Thursday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home Chapel by Pastor Olah Moore. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. The remains will be ready for viewing at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The family will assemble at 3649 Riverside Drive, at 11 a.m. for the procession.

Leatha V. Johnson

NORFOLK -- Leatha Virginia Johnson, 95, of the 1500 block of Norcova Ave., died in Bayside Health Care on Sept. 7, 1998.

Mrs. Johnson was born in Lynchburg, Va., and was the widow of Joseph P. Johnson. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include five daughters, Emma Elizabeth Rogers of Hammond, Ind., Elsie Mae Sawyer, Frances Jelinek, Doris Aileen Brown, all of Norfolk, and Margaret Louise Evans of Lynchburg; two sons, Harvey DeWitt Johnson of Lynchburg and Bobby Edwards Sawyer of Virginia Beach; and 145 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Rosewood Memorial Park. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. today for visitation at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

Louise R. Dowdy

PORTSMOUTH -- Louise R. Dowdy, 85, of the 2200 block of Colorado Ave., went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998.

She was a member of Alexander Baptist Church since 1943. She retired after 27 years of service as a payroll clerk from Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

Mrs. Dowdy is survived by her husband, Ashby Edward Dowdy; a daughter, Peggy Cremeens and her husband, Dale Cremeens, both of Portsmouth; a sister, Etherlene Maddry of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren; a brother-in-law, Henry Dowdy of Richmond; a niece, Bettye Anne Raymond of Richmond.

A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in Alexander Baptist Church by Dr. Archie Corbin and the Rev. John Burr with interment in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in Loving Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Savong Beng

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Savong Beng, of Columbus Loop in Columbus Station Apartments, died Sept. 3, 1998. A memorial service will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Saturday at 1431 Peony Arch, Virginia Beach. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk, is in charge.

Ernest Castillo Jr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ernest Castillo Jr., 91, a resident of Virginia Beach since 1994, died Sunday, Sept. 6, 1998.

He was born in Tampa, Fla., on Oct. 23, 1906, and lived there until moving to Virginia Beach. He was a member of the First Methodist Church inTampa.

His wife, Alice Esteban Castillo, preceded him in death. He is survived by a son, Ernest Castillo III and his wife, Anne D. Castillo; three granddaughters, Carlotta Castillo Moulder of Burke, Va., Anita Castillo Fritzinger of Suffolk, Sarah Castillo Page of New Hill, N.C.; three great-grandchildren, Mitchell Fritzinger, Thomas Fritzinger, Alicia Moulder; and a very dear friend, Elsie Malloy of Norfolk.

Mr. Castillo went to work for Tampa Drug Co. in 1929 as a bookkeeper and rose to the position of secretary-treasurer before retiring in 1973. After retirement, he served as chairman of the board of Allen Drug Co. in Orlando, Fla.

Graveside services and interment will be held in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Tampa at a future date. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Helma J. Fletcher

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Helma Jensen Fletcher, 82, of the 100 block of Smythe Court, died Sept. 6, 1998, at her home.

Mrs. Fletcher was born in New York, N.Y., and was a resident of Virginia Beach for 17 years. She was the widow of Francis E. Fletcher. She was a member of St. Gregory's the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and was a member of The September Club.

Survivors include two sons, Francis E. Fletcher Jr. and his wife, Penelope, of Arlington, Va., and John R. Fletcher and his wife, Linda, of Virginia Beach; a sister, Anne E. Lawson of Brewster, N.Y.; and four grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Gregory's the Great Catholic Church by Father Anselm Ober, O.S.B. Burial will be at Hampton National Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be held today at 7 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel. Donations may be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 945, Virginia Beach, Va. 23451.

Joseph C. McCarthy

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Joseph C. McCarthy, 79, of the 4300 block of Westwell Lane, died Sept. 6, 1998, in his residence.

Born in St. James, Long Island, N.Y., he was a retired wing commander for the Royal Canadian Air Force after 28 years. He was an original member of 617 (Dambusters) Squadron Royal Air Force in World War II and was personally presented the Distinquished Service Order by the Queen of England for his part in the Dams Raid. Included in his other medals are two Distinquished Flying Crosses. After the war, he brought back to England and tested many of Germany's front line aircraft while stationed at Farnborough. Upon his return to Canada and the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was again involved with aircraft testing. Later, he was Officer Commanding of a Flight training school for NATO pilots. He commanded a squadron of Neptune patrol aircraft, served in the Belgian Congo with the United Nations, and served on the CINCLANT staff in Norfolk. He was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his wife, Alice T. McCarthy; daughter, Karen A. Westergaard and her husband, John, of Virginia Beach; a son, Joseph B. McCarthy and his wife, Susan, of Virginia Beach; brother, Francis A. McCarthy of Glendale, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Brandon Worrell, Justin Worrell, Meghan Worrell and Samantha Westergaard.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by the Rev. Ernest L. Trueblood. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park.

Patricia L. Parker

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Patricia L. Parker, 77, died Sept. 5, 1998.

A native of Asbury Park, N.J., she was a retired advertising manager and commercial artist from Willis Wayside after 17 years of service. She was an Episcopalian and the widow of George J. Parker.

Survivors include two daughters, Kathleen S. Thomas of Virginia Beach and Margo R. Parker of Chesapeake; three sons, Roger J. Evans of Virginia Beach, Michael J. Parker of Oak Park, Va., and Stephan G. Parker of Woods Cross Roads, Va.; one sister, Joan F. Muller of West Islip, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel. Burial will be private at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Alzheimer's Association or Life Net.

Maureen A. Walsh

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Maureen Ann Walsh, 63, of the 5300 block of Achilles Drive in Kempsville, died in her home on Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, she has made her home in Virginia Beach since 1968. A devoted and loving Marine's wife, she raised her family wherever the Marine Corps assigned them.

Mrs. Walsh was an active member of the Fairfield Garden Club, where she served to help beautify the Fairfield Community. She was a very active member of Church of the Ascension, serving as a religious education teacher, chairwoman of the annual White Elephant Sale and a member of the funeral ministry. She served her church and its members with love and devotion. Over the years she actively participated in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, cheerleading and the Kempsville Marching Band Parents Association.

Survivors include her loving husband of 41 years, Lt. Col. Gerald E. Walsh USMC (Ret.); son, Michael Walsh and wife, Page, of Winchester, Va.; daughter, Kathleen Dusza and husband, Jeffrey, of Virginia Beach; son, Joseph Walsh of Virginia Beach; daughter, Kristen Burns and her husband, Shawn, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; brother, John T. Collins and wife, Bernice of Euclid, Ohio; and six grandchildren, Joshua, Kevin, Connor, Braden, Lindsay and Kellee.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rose and James Collins, her brother, James Collins, all of Euclid, Ohio, and her sister, Lenore O'Donnell of Fairview Park, Ohio.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated today at 7:30 p.m. in Church of the Ascension Catholic Church, Virginia Beach, by Father James Parke. Friends may join the family at the church for visitation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. prior to the Mass. Burial will take place on Wednesday at 10 a.m. in Colonial Grove Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Social Ministry at Church of the Ascension. Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Lonnell Douglas

SUFFOLK -- Lonnell Douglas, 41, of the 5800 block of Holland Road, died Sept. 5. 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Applewhite Funeral Home.

Eula Evans

SUFFOLK -- Eula Evans, 98, of the 100 block of S. Capital St., died Sept. 5, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Applewhite Funeral Home Chapel.

Robert L. Vine

SUFFOLK -- Robert Lewis Vine, 68, of the 1300 block of Barnes Road, died Sept. 5, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Peebles Funeral Home.

Daniel B. Baldwin

WAKEFIELD -- Daniel B. Baldwin, 73, died Sept. 6, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in Wakefield Cemetery. Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield, is in charge.

C. Clements Gouldman

FRANKLIN -- C. Clements Gouldman, 85, died Aug. 29, 1998, while vacationing with his family on the Outer Banks in North Carolina.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Franklin Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Roy DeBrand. The family will receive friends at the residence immediately following the service and suggests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Franklin Baptist Church, 208 N. High St., Franklin, Va. 23851; the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, 162 Prince George St., Annapolis, Md. 21401; or to a charity of the donors choosing. Wright Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
