ELIZABETH CITY -- Robert Victor Freed, 81, of the 500 block of Timothy Drive, died Sept. 7, 1998. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, with burial in Middleboro, Mass.
Virginia M. Gillespie
MANNS HARBOR -- Virginia Morris Gillespie, 77, died after a brief illness Sept. 6, 1998, in a Norfolk hospital. Mrs. Gillespie, a native of West Virginia, was the daughter of the late Charles A. and Marjorie Simpson Morris. She was the widow of Jess Herald Gillespie and was preceded in death by her sister, Gertrude Grimm, and her sister-in-law, Georgia Morris. She retired after more than 30 years from the Kanawha County, West Virginia, School System as a reading teacher. She received her undergraduate degree from Morris Harvey College and graduate degree at Marshall University, both in West Virginia. She was a member for nearly 50 years of Highlawn Baptist Church in St. Albans, W.Va. After moving to Manns Harbor three years ago, she attended the Manteo Baptist Church in Manteo, N.C. Mrs. Gillespie had extensive volunteer service after her retirement. In West Virginia, she was a hospital volunteer at the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Hospital, soup kitchen volunteer at St. Albans and reading instructor for the literacy programs. In Manteo, she was a volunteer at the senior center in Nags Head. She was also a member of the Manteo Garden Club. Survivors include a daughter, Dr. Bunny Gillespie Sheppard of Charlottesville, Va.; two brothers, Harry G. Morris and his wife, Gerty, of Newport News, Charles O. Morris of Elkins, W.Va.; and two grandchildren, Brett Sheppard, currently living in Singapore, and Heather L. Sheppard of Williamsburg; and eight nieces and nephews. Services will be held in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, on Wednesday at 11 a.m., by the Rev. Leroy Kenney. Casdorph Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, will be handling arrangements. A memorial service will be held in Manteo Baptist Church on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. by the Rev. Bruce Warrington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Manteo Baptist Church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is handling local arrangements.

WILLIAMSTON -- James Allen ``Jimmy" Mizelle, 54, of the 500 block of N. Haughton St., died Sept. 6, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Fellowship Baptist Church. Biggs Funeral Home, Williamston, is in charge.
Mildred A. Spivey
WINDSOR -- Mildred Avis Spivey, 89, a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, died Sept. 7, 1998.
She was the daughter of the late Wesley F. Garris and Mattie S. Garris Hines and the widow of Grafton R. Spivey. Mrs. Spivey was a longtime member of Colosse Baptist Church and was the organist for many years.
Survivors include two brothers, Wilson Floyd Garris of Windsor and Elbert R. Hines of Glen Allen, Va., and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, John H. Avis.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. Lee Bowers. Burial will be in Colosse Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home other times at the home of Maurice and Judy Rhodes, 27410 Walters Highway. George A. Williams
WILLIAMSTON -- George Allen Williams, 56, of the 18900 block of Highway 64 E., died Sept. 7, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Pentecostal Holiness Church. Biggs Funeral Home is in charge.
Harry R. Behrens
HAMPTON -- Harry R. Behrens, 71, died Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998. A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., he had been a Hampton resident since 1967.
After serving in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, he retired as a senior chief machinist mate in 1965 after tours in World War II and the Korean War. Following his military service, Mr. Behrens joined DeLaval-Transamerica as a field service representative retiring in 1989 after 20 years of service. He had been a member of the Fleet Reserve since 1966.
Mr. Behrens is survived by his wife, Patricia J. Behrens; his daughter and son-in-law, Elizabeth B. and Michael Payne of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; his son and daughter-in-law, Robert M. and Sherry S. Behrens of Hampton; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn B. and Charles Swahn of Tampa, Fla.; and five grandchildren, Scott, Mallory, Alex, Katie and Julian.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends today from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at R. Hayden

Alex J. Lemons
WATERLOO, Iowa -- Alex John Lemons, 12, of the 1000 block of Newton St., died at home Sept. 3, from complications of a brain tumor.
He was born Aug. 13, 1986, in Virginia Beach, son of Gordon and Colleen McBride Lemons. Survivors include his parents; a brother, Andy of the home; and paternal grandfather, Donald Lemons of Waterloo. A service will be held at 11 a.m. today in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in Hillside Cemetery, Cedar Falls. Robert E. Sears
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Robert Emery Sears, 52, died Sept. 5, 1998, in his home.
He was a native of Kansas City, Kan. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a colonel in the Jag Corps. He moved to Clearwater from Virginia Beach earlier in the year. He was a U.S. Administrative Law Judge with the Norfolk, Va., and Tampa, Fla., Social Security Administration. He was a member of Virginia Beach Community Chapel. He also served in the U.S. Air Force Reserve from May 1, 1970, to July 28, 1998.
Survivors include his wife, Leeanne Sears; his son, Page Emery Davidson Sears; his daughter, Ashland Victoria Sears, all of Clearwater, Fla.; his mother, Irene Sears Swartz; and his brother, Gerald Sears, both of Kansas City, Kan.
A memorial service will be held Monday Sept. 14, 1998, at 11 a.m. at the Virginia Beach Community Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Norfolk Christian Schools and the Young Life Ministry. Moss Feaster Funeral Home, Clearwater, Fla., is handling arrangements.
David J. Caldwell
CHESAPEAKE -- David Joseph Caldwell, 81, of the 500 block of Dove Drive, died Sept. 7, 1998, in a local hospital. Mr. Caldwell was a native of Roystone, Pa., and retired from the U.S. Navy after 31 years of service. After retirement, Mr. Caldwell went to work as a Longshoreman for 23 years. He was one of the first 100 members of the Local 1970 and he also helped organize the VFW Post 4809 in Chesapeake. Survivors include his wife, Olga Nuzzo Caldwell of Chesapeake; three sons, Patrick David Caldwell, William H. Walker Jr., Joseph O. Walker and his wife, Carol Ann; and his granddaughter, Elizabeth Ashley Walker. A graveside service with military honors will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery by Father John J. Dorgan. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today.
Chad W. Guilfoy
CHESAPEAKE -- Chad William Guilfoy, 15, of the 500 block of Madera Road, died Sept. 8, 1998.
A native of Northampton, Mass., he was a student entering his sophomore year at Great Bridge High School.
Survivors include his mother, Toni Cacace-Beshears and her husband, Darryl, of Chesapeake; his father Frank M. Guilfoy and his wife, Nancy, of Fall River, Mass.; two stepsisters, Meighan Beshears of Chesapeake and Allison Soares of Fall River; two brothers, Gregory Guilfoy of Fall River and Ryan Guilfoy of Chesapeake; two stepbrothers, Bryan Beshears of Chesapeake and Andrew Soares of Fall River; maternal grandfather, Pasquale L. Cacace of Virginia Beach; paternal grandmother, Genevieve Guilfoy of Fall River; and step-grandmother, Ruby Beshears of Norfolk.
A funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Kempsville Road, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Michael Wetherington. Cremation will follow the service. CHESAPEAKE -- David Glenn O'Neal Jr., 15, of the 800 block of Hidden Harbor Court, died Sept. 8, 1998, in Norfolk.
A native of New Orleans, La., he was a student entering his sophomore year at Great Bridge High School.
Survivors include his mother, Debra L. O'Neal of Chesapeake; his father, David G. O'Neal Sr. of Chesapeake; three sisters, Shannon O'Neal, Penny O'Neal and Christy O'Neal; and one half-sister, Rebecca O'Neal, all of Chesapeake.

CHESAPEAKE -- Lena Lamour Sykes Small died Wednesday, Aug. 26, 1998, in Chesapeake.
She was born in Leechville, N.C., and was the daughter of the late James Jackson and Jessie Martin Sykes.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Small of New Jersey and Palestine Small of Pantego, N.C.; two sisters, Minnie Lee, also of Pantego, and Rosanell Ruffins of Ossining, N.Y.; five brothers, James Sykes of Albany, N.Y., Gilbert Sykes of Brooklyn, N.Y., George Sykes of Texas, Melvin Sykes of Norfolk and Marshall Sykes of New York, N.Y.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Portsmouth. Viewing will begin on Thursday and the family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service.

Smith Whitaker, 88, formerly of Chesapeake, died Sept. 3, 1998, in Cocoa, Fla.
Born in McIntyre, Ga., she was a former member of Rock Church and the widow of Robert Ellis Whitaker.

Robert G. Drepperd
NORFOLK -- Robert G. ``Bob" Drepperd, 76, of Norfolk, died late Saturday, Sept. 5, 1998, in Richmond.
Mr. Drepperd was the widower of Mary Willie Watson Drepperd, a native of Blackstone, Va. He became known in the 1950s as a local television personality appearing on Norfolk's WTAR TV. He also worked as an announcer for WLOW radio in Norfolk.
During World War II, Mr. Drepperd served honorably in the U.S. Army, and later served as an officer in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Mr. Drepperd was a charter member of Calvin Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Drepperd is survived by his daughter, Terry Lee Jackson of Richmond; two grandsons, Norwood Lee Woolard III of Lima, Ohio, and R. Mathew Woolard of Richmond; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer Lee Woolard and Joshua Tyler Woolard, both of Lima.
A memorial service will be conducted at 7 p.m. today at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 2901 E. Little Creek Road, Norfolk. The family has asked that memorial contributions be sent to the World Wildlife Fund, 1250 24th St., Northwest, Washington, D.C. 20037.
