Nell F. Ballard

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Nell Orene Ferguson Ballard, 74, of the 4400 block of Blackbeard Road, died Sept. 13, 1998, in her home after a long illness. She was born in Craddock, Va., and had lived in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area for 68 years. Nell was a graduate of Maury High School, Class of 1942, and was also a graduate of Kee Business College. During World War II she worked as a secretary for the Coast Guard and later worked as executive secretary for Admiral Redfield at the University of Virginia. She completed her professional career as an administrative assistant for the Ward's Corner/Ballard Insurance Agencies.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, William M. Ballard of Virginia Beach; three children, Lynne, Bill and Dana Ballard, all of the Tidewater area; a sister-in-law, Miriam Anderson of Virginia Beach; and two nieces, Orene McKenzie Blum of Clifton, Va., and Melody Hartranft of Virginia Beach.

Visitation will be held at 1:30 p.m. followed by a funeral service at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Baylake United Methodist Church, 4300 Shore Drive in Virginia Beach. The Rev. John W. Scott will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23513. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.

Nell was a beloved wife, mother, aunt, friend and caretaker of all animals. She will be missed by all creatures great and small.

Dean A. Barnett
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Dean Andrew Barnett, 50, of the 5700 block of Brandon Blvd., died Sept. 11, 1998, in Virginia Beach. Mr. Barnett was a native of Norfolk and a member of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation in Norfolk. Survivors include his mother, Mary C. Barnett of Norfolk; his wife, Jacquelyn Barnett of Virginia Beach; his sons, Jonah and Joshua Barnett, both of Norfolk; his brother, Larkin H. Barnett III of Marco Island, Fla.; and numerous other family members and friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Annunciation by Father Charles Goumenis and Father Savas Constantinou, with burial following at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Trisagion service will be held today at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, at 7 p.m. There will also be a gathering of friends and family at the Sunset Grill on Virginia Beach Blvd. at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Gertrude E. Baylosis
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Gertrude Estrella ``Grandma GB" Baylosis, 81, of the 5200 block of Angus Drive, died Sept. 12, 1998, at a local hospital.
Born in Cebu, Philippines, she was the widow of Francisco Espina Baylosis Sr.

Survivors include six daughters, Amelia Baylosis Flores and her husband, Roberto Andrada Flores, of Olangapo, Philippines, Cenona Baylosis Calda of Daly City, Calif., Norma Baylosis Del Mundo and her husband, Gerardo Aquila Del Mundo, of Quezon City, Philippines, Fe Baylosis Baltao and her husband, Tommy Baltao, of Waipahu, Hawaii, Cecille Estrella Baylosis of San Francisco, Calif., Sylvia Baylosis Sanchez and her husband, Reynaldo Dajoyag Sanchez, of Virginia Beach; one son, Francisco Estrella Baylosis Jr. and his wife, Delia Lagrosa Baylosis, of Vallejo, Calif.; 22 grandchildren, Rommel Flores and his wife, Donna Flores, Ronald Flores, Angelica Flores, Melissa Flores, Lani Flores, Maria Christina Arguelles, Fatimah Fe Calda, Maria Victoria Del Mundo, Winfred Francisco Del Mundo, Judy Angela Del Mundo, Judan Anthony Guiao, Jessica Joy Del Mundo, Janet Melissa Del Mundo, Francisco Baylosis III, Matthew Baylosis, Jean-Marie Baylosis, James Baltao, Leilani Baltao, Brian Brannon Biggs, Susan Sanchez Alegre and her husband, Paul Cesar Alegre, Sarah Jane Sanchez and Manuel Diego Wilson; and six great-grandchildren, Racquel Flores, RD Flores, Stephanie Mae Arguelles, Richard Michael Arguelles, Geon Basa and Joseph Riley Basa. She was predeceased by a grandchild, Ricky Sean Sanchez.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by the Rev. Father Leo Manalo and Father Anselm Ober, O.S.B. Burial will be private. A Christian Wake Service will be held at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

George A. DeHoff Jr.
VIRGINIA BEACH -- George A. DeHoff Jr., 91, died Sept. 12, 1998. Mr. DeHoff was born in Baltimore and was the son of the late George A. DeHoff Sr. and Mary V. DeHoff. Mr. DeHoff was retired from the accounting division of the Naval Supply Center after 30 years of service, and he was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. Mr. DeHoff was an avid gardener, and he loved his roses. He is survived by his best friend, Arthur B. Rogers of Virginia Beach.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church by Father Anselm Ober O.S.D. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. A Christian wake service will be held Wednesday evening in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel.

Ethel P. Doyle

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ethel Pauline Doyle, 89, died on Sept. 12, 1998, at Westminster Canterbury, 3100 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, of stroke complications.

Born in Baltimore, Md., and one of 13 children born to William and Alverda Stiegler, she was the widow of Vernon T. Doyle, who predeceased her in 1988.

She was a life member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Hyattsville, Md. She moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1937, where she was a resident lastly at 7202 Wells Parkway, Hyattsville, Md., until moving to Westminster Canterbury in Virginia Beach, Va., in 1982.

Survivors include her only son, Bruce N. Doyle and his wife, Nancy, of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Patrick N. Doyle and his wife, Karen, of Travis AFB, California, and Eric L. Doyle of Atlanta, Ga.; and two great-grandchildren, Thomas Doyle and Toby Doyle; brothers, Albert and Paul Stiegler; and a sister, Edna Schwartz, all of Baltimore.

Burial arrangements to be handled by Loring-Byers Funeral Home in Baltimore, Md.

William E. Garthright

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William E. Garthright, 69, died Sept. 13, 1998, at a local hospital.

A native of Richmond, Va., he was a retired supervisor from AT&T after 30 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of Korea and a member of VFW.

Survivors include his wife, Susan Garthright; one son, William E. Garthright Jr. of Mechanicsville, Va.; one daughter, Kelly Perlowski of Richmond; one sister, Barbara Heath of Maurice, La.; two brothers, Tyler and Earl Garthright, both of Richmond; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Jane M. Jones
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Jane Miller Jones, 66, a longtime resident of Colony Point in Norfolk and recently of Atlantic Shores Retirement Community in Virginia Beach, died Sunday, Sept. 13, 1998. Born in Winchester, Va., Mrs. Jones first came to Norfolk in 1955. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk; worked as director of the Norfolk Interfaith Coalition for the Elderly (NICE); was secretary and board member of the Norfolk Urban Outreach Ministry; and served on the boards of several housing developments for the handicapped and elderly. Survivors include her husband, Max B. Jones; two daughters, Susan K. Jones and Katherine J. Long, both of Fairfax, Va.; five grandchildren, Sarah Manuel, Nichole Long, Robert Long, Courtney Long, and Nathaniel Long; and a brother, James L. Miller of Norfolk. A funeral service will be conducted at noon in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments Laskin Road Chapel with the Rev. Robert Warren officiating. A graveside service will be held in Mount Hebron Cemetery in Winchester, Va. Friday at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2730 Ellsmere Avenue, Norfolk, Va. 23513, or to a charity of choice.

Suzanne G. Monroe
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Suzanne Gail Monroe, 47, died Sept. 12, 1998, in her residence. She was born in Fulton, N.Y., on June 22, 1951.
Ms. Monroe retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service as a chief petty officer. She was then employed by Greenbrier Chrysler Plymouth for two years.

She is survived by two sons, Bryan Harris and Lannon Ware, both of Virginia Beach; her parents, Madalyn and Chuck Harris of Oswego, N.Y.; one sister, Roxanne Falise of Craig, Colo.; and many loving friends.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the American Cancer Society. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.

Mary W. Morris

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Lyles W. ``Lila" Morris, 89, died on Sept. 13, 1998.

Mrs. Morris was predeceased by her parents, William and Bessie Willingham; her brother, Kern Willingham; her sister, Virginia Arnold; and her husband, Philip Clarke Morris, Cdr. U.S.N. Ret.

Lila was a past member of the Thoroughgood and Hermitage Garden Clubs as a prolific prize winner for her flower arrangements and later served as a guest speaker and lecturer upon earning her master judge certificate from the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. She was instrumental in introducing the Ikebana style of Japanese flower arranging. Other organizations she belonged to were the Suburban Women's Club, The Navy Officer's Club and the Retired Officer's Wives Society of Tidewater and Baylake United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her son, Stephen L. Morris and his wife, Lynda; her daughter, Phyllis ``Sugie" Rivers and her husband, Wilson; her sister, Eva Felce; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Baylake United Methodist Church, Virginia Beach. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.

Because of Lila's love of flowers and gardening, we ask that donations be made in her name to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens or to the Baylake United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Milton Soffer

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Milton Soffer passed away on Sept. 13, 1998. Services are private. Affordable Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

Richard A. Tylman

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Richard A. Tylman, 72, died Sept. 6, 1998.

He was survived by two sons, Eugene and Eric Tylman of Norfolk; two daughters, Gaile Johnson and Robin Demro of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Frank Tylman of California; one sister, Gearldine Reeves of New York; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hospice Fund care of Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake.

Glenda L. Varela

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Glenda Lee Varela, 45, died Sept. 13, 1998. She was born in Oakland, Calif.

She is survived by her children, Amber Cox, Nicole Matthews and T.J. Varela, all of Virginia Beach; a sister, Valerie Smith of Hayward, Calif.; a brother, John Mader of Oakland; and five grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday in Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

William E. Vaughan

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William E. Vaughan, 77, of the 100 block of Montcliff Court, died Sept. 13, 1998, in a local hospital.

Born in Roanoke, he retired from the Federal Aviation Agency after 30 years. He was a Catholic.

Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Vaughan; three daughters, Joann Womack of Brandon, Fla., Brenda Heath and Jean Culpepper, both of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a niece and a nephew.

A graveside funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will be at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

Leon C. Aplet

NORFOLK -- Leon ``Len" Charles Aplet, 72, of Circle Court in Norfolk, passed away Sept. 12, 1998, in a Portland, Ore., hospital three weeks after undergoing emergency heart surgery. Leon was born in Toledo, Ore., on Dec. 7, 1925. He retired as chief petty officer in 1967 after 25 years of honored service in the U.S. Navy. After working at Newport News Shipbuilding for nine years, he became the proprietor of Len's Service Center at Wards Corner. This community-oriented business became a hub of family and friends where Len formed many close relationships. Len will also be remembered as a participant in many area classic car shows with his red 1966 Ford Fairlane convertible.

He is survived by his wife, Norma J. Aplet; son and daughter-in-law, Mark W. Graybill and Susan I. Pollack; daughter and son-in-law, Sherry L. and Terry L. Johnson; four grandchildren, Stephen C. Belechak and Cody Charles Johnson and Brandt P. and Lindsay R. Graybill; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Lawrence Huntsucker of Toledo; sister, Ruby Hopper of Sweet Home, Ore.; brother, Lowell Aplet of Kaiser, Ore.; special nephew and niece, Donald and Penny Huntsucker of Toledo; special cousins, Roger, Helen and Chris Foutz of Roanoke, Va.; and close personal friend, Ralph George.

A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. Family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at 10 a.m. Friday.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Children's Harbor Ghent, 1900 Llewellyn Ave., Norfolk, Va. 23517, a nonprofit early childhood center held close to the heart of Len and his family.

Viola Haskins
NORFOLK -- Viola ``Big Moma" Haskins of the 1400 block of Hibie St., died Sept. 12, 1998.
Born in Norfolk, she was a homemaker and the widow of Rassie Haskins. She was a member of New Central Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Survivors include two daughters, Marion Williams and Bettie Bolden, both of Norfolk; two sons, Lee Oliver Haskins of Miami, Fla., and Augustus Haskins of Columbia, Md.; four sisters, Fannie Mae Boyer, Lena Hines, Cora Lee Sample, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Marie Haskins of Norfolk; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Central Baptist Church, 712 Walker Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. James Missick. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Family and friends will assemble at 1516 Oakfield Ave., Norfolk, at noon Wednesday for the funeral procession to the residence. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.

Johnnie Henderson

NORFOLK -- Johnnie Henderson of the 6900 block of Bonnot Drive died Sept. 13, 1998. Arrangements will be announced. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk, is in charge.

Quincy A. Johnson

NORFOLK -- Quincy Anthony Johnson, 46, of the 1400 block of E. Tanners Creek Drive and a native of Norfolk, died Sept. 11, 1998, at a local nursing home.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Johnson; one daughter, Alexis Johnson of Norfolk; three sisters, Catherine Johnson, Pamela Dawson and Joyce Pittman, all of Norfolk; one brother, John L. Johnson Jr. of Norfolk; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Anthony Moses. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Thelma R. Joyner

NORFOLK -- Thelma R. Joyner of the 1000 block of Wolcott Ave., died Sept. 12, 1998.

Born in St. Petersburg, Fla., she was a retired school teacher from Norfolk City Public School Board and was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mary Abdullah of Norfolk; one son and daughter-in-law, D.T. Joyner and Carolyn Joyner of Vineland, N.J.; seven grandchildren, Tanya, Christina, Alena, Tramarr, Shareen, Dallis and Sidney; a nephew, Harvie Andrews and his wife and children.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at Chatman Funeral Home. Burial will be private. The remains will be cremated. E.A. Hughes Funeral Home is in charge.
