Viola Haskins
NORFOLK -- Viola ``Big Moma" Haskins of the 1400 block of Hibie St., died Sept. 12, 1998.
Born in Norfolk, she was a homemaker and the widow of Rassie Haskins. She was a member of New Central Baptist Church, Norfolk.

Survivors include two daughters, Marion Williams and Bettie Bolden, both of Norfolk; two sons, Lee Oliver Haskins of Miami, Fla., and Augustus Haskins of Columbia, Md.; four sisters, Fannie Mae Boyer, Lena Hines, Cora Lee Sample, all of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Marie Haskins of Norfolk; 22 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at New Central Baptist Church, 712 Walker Ave., Norfolk, by the Rev. James Missick. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The body will be placed in the church at noon. Family and friends will assemble at 1516 Oakfield Ave., Norfolk, at noon Wednesday for the funeral procession to the residence. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.

Jacqueline L. Penland
NORFOLK -- Jacqueline L. Penland, 36, of the 2500 block of Dominion Ave., died Sept. 12, 1998, at her residence.
A native of East Chicago, Ind., she was a costume designer for Norfolk City Public Schools and a real estate agent.

Survivors include her husband, Carl D. Penland; one daughter, Shannon D. Jones of Norfolk; five sons, Herbie H. Jones III of Indiana, Carl D. Penland Jr., Gary A. Marts Jr. and Joshua A. Penland, all of Norfolk, and Edward J. Penland of Michigan; her mother and stepfather, Delores Jean and William T. Rogers Jr. of Virginia Beach; her father and stepmother, Robert William and Patricia Ann Gollihur of Indiana; five brothers, Bill R. Gollihur of Illinois, Randall W. Gollihur, William T. Rogers III and Timothy E. Rogers, all of Virginia Beach, and Richard W. Gollihur of Roanoke; and her paternal grandmother, LaVeryle Cawthorn of Illinois.

A funeral will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. John I. Rogers. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Memorial donations may be made to The Martha Davis Cancer Center, 3636 High St., Portsmouth, Va. 23707.

Lafayette Brown Sr.

SUFFOLK -- Lafayette Brown Sr., 57, a barber and owner of Lafayette's Barber Shop, died Sept. 11, 1998, at Medical College of Virginia Hospital, Richmond.

He was born and reared in Nansemond County, attended Norfolk State University and later joined the U.S. Army. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Brown, and a brother, Dr. Thomas J. Brown Sr.

Surviving are his wife, Stella Davis Brown; a son, Lafayette ``L.B." Brown Jr. of Suffolk; a daughter, Pamela B. Wilson and husband, Michael V. Wilson, of Stangdahlem, Germany; his mother, Floris Brown of Suffolk; his brother, Glenn O. Brown and wife, Brenda C. Brown, of Suffolk; a sister, Gloristine B. Tatum and husband, Genova D. Tatum, of Hampton; two sisters-in-law, Annette C. Brown of Portsmouth and Sarah A. Davis of Smithfield; a devoted mother-in-law, Edith E. Davis of Smithfield; and a grandson, Michael V. Wilson II of Stangdahlem, Germany.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Little Bethel Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Kim D. Shivers. Entombment will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. Funeral arrangements are by Pretlow and Chapman Funeral Home, Smithfield.

Rutisha E. Jones

SUFFOLK -- Rutisha Eugenie Jones of the 100 block of Lancelot Drive died Sept. 13, 1998. A graveside service will be held at noon Wednesday in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Mary E. Davis

PARKSLEY -- Mary Elizabeth Davis, 79, died Sept. 13, 1998. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Adams United Methodist Church Cemetery, Parksley. Wharton Funeral Home, Accomac, is in charge.

Sudie S. Barnhill

BELHAVEN -- Sudie Bell Spencer Barnhill, 91, of the 300 block of Pine St., died Sept. 11, 1998. Puckett-Purkett Funeral Services, Roper, N.C., is in charge.

Patricia A. Comeau

SOUTHERN SHORES -- Patricia Anderson Comeau, 71, of Southern Shores, died Saturday, Sept. 12, 1998, in a local hospital. Mrs. Comeau was born in Jersey City, N.J., and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Sweet Carolinas and a former member of the Sweet Adeline's.

Mrs. Comeau was the daughter of the late Christopher Augusta Anderson and Mary White Anderson and was the wife of Joseph E. Comeau.

Besides her husband, surviving are two daughters, Donna Comeau West of Ohio and Holly Ann Comeau of Camden, N.C.; two sons, Glenn R. Comeau of Blacksburg, Va., and Wayne D. Comeau of Hopewell, N.J.; a half sister, Vivian Van Gemert of Danville, Calif.; and a half brother, Richard Anderson of Boca Raton, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Memorial services are pending. Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements. Memorials may be sent to the Southern Shores Fire Department.

Jean B. Freeman

KITTY HAWK -- Jean Bailey Freeman, 72, died Sept. 12, 1998. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.

Cecil J. Maddrey III

SEVERN -- Cecil Jarvis ``C.J." Maddrey III, 44, died Sunday Sept. 12, 1998. Mr. Maddrey was a farmer with Maddrey Farms in Severn.

Survivors include his parents, Cecil J. Maddrey Jr. and Irene Vaughan Maddrey of Severn; a son, David Shawn Maddrey; two daughters, Jessica Lynn Maddrey and Lacey Nicole Maddrey, all of Severn; a sister, Pearl Lane Maddrey Robinson of Morgantown, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Severn United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Bowman. Burial will follow at Severn Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Severn United Methodist Church, Severn, N.C. 27877.

The family will receive friends at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Cecil J. Maddrey Jr., Vaughans Creek Road, Severn, N.C. Arrangements are by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, N.C.

Marion J. Martin

MOYOCK -- Marion Laura Johansen Martin, 85, of Birchview Ct., died Sept. 14, 1998. A memorial service will be held at a later date in Swampscott, Mass. Cremation Society of Virginia, Tidewater Office, is handling arrangements.

Donald C. Morgan

POINT HARBOR -- Donald Craig ``Donnie" Morgan, 34, died Saturday Sept. 12, 1998, at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Mr. Morgan was born in Norfolk and was a Protestant. He was the son of David and Diane Matthias Morgan of Point Harbor.

Besides his parents, Mr. Morgan is survived by one sister, Kim M. Martan; and a niece and nephew, Nina Johnson and Jeffery Cessna, all of Nags Head, N.C.

A funeral will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, with the Rev. Eugene McLawhorn officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 5 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Gilbert L. Person

SEVERN -- Gilbert Lee Person, 58, died Sept. 11, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Shiloh Baptist Church, Boykins, Va. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, N.C., is in charge.

Carolyn C. Whitehead

ELIZABETH CITY -- Carolyn Chambers Whitehead, 58, of the 700 block of Halls Creek Road, died Sept. 13, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in Twiford's Memorial Chapel.

Francis B. Fitzgerald Jr.

CONCORD -- Francis Bell Fitzgerald Jr., 88, of the 200 block of Phoebe Road, died Sept. 12, 1998. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Pamplin Cemetery, Pamplin, Va. Robinson Funeral Home, Appomattox, Va., is in charge.

Emily R. Jones

RIVERVIEW, Fla. -- Emily Ruth Jones, 67, of Fresno Lane, died Sept. 13, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Twiford's Northside Chapel, Elizabeth City, N.C.

Ophelia Richardson

BRONX, N.Y. -- Ophelia Richardson of the 3400 block of Irwin Ave. died Sept. 8, 1998. A graveside funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Calvary Cemetery. Riddick Funeral Service is in charge.

Gaetano G. Scotece

STEILACOOM, Wash. -- Gaetano G. ``Jerry" Scotece of the 400 block of Sheritan Place passed away suddenly while traveling on business in Atlanta, Ga., on Sept. 11, 1998.

He was born in Norfolk, in 1947 to Frank and Amelia Scotece. Mr. Scotece graduated from Norfolk Catholic and Old Dominion University, completing postgraduate studies at Baylor University.

A serviceman of admirable valor, he served both in the Navy (1966-1976) in electronics and as a member of an underwater diving team. He later served in the Army (1977-1989) as a physical therapist, before retiring to spend more time with his children. He subsequently served the Tacoma, Wash., community as physical therapist, specializing in pain management and published articles relating to this speciality. He also was a lay eucharistic minister for his church.

Best known for his devotion to his family, Mr. Scotece is survived by his wife, Dawn Light; his children, Maria, Dianna, Phillip and Margaret. He is also survived by his father, Frank Scotece of Norfolk; his brothers, Carmine Scotece of Butler, Pa., Paul Scotece of Chesapeake, Raymond Scotece of El Paso, Texas; and two sisters, Tonine Davis of Virginia Beach, and Cecelia Scotece of Norfolk.

Our family and his friends will miss him, as he continues on his journey to join the Lord.

A Liturgy of Mass will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with vigil and visitation starting at 6 p.m. Burial will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Stacy L. Adams

CHESAPEAKE -- Stacy Lee Adams, 60, of the 900 block of Bowden Ave., died Sept. 15, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital.

He was a native of Erwin, N.C., and currently employed as a draftsman.

Survivors include his mother, Vada Hilderbrand of Chesapeake; three sons, Stacy Lee Adams Jr. of Orlando, Fla., Thomas Adams of Jacksonville, Fla., and Glenn Adams of Treasure Island, Fla.; a sister, Joyce A. Morris of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren, Matthew, Christine, Jessica and Patrick.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mitchell M. Newell Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Mitchell Mannaway Newell Sr., 83, of Lockard Ave., died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, in a local hospital.

Mr. Newell was born in Mecklenburg County, N.C., and was the son of the late William Albert and Georgi Anna Beatty Newell. He had retired after 34 1/2 years with Nabisco Company. Mr. Newell was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Catherine Newell of Chesapeake; his four sons, Mitchell Mannaway Newell Jr. and his wife, Patricia Bridgett, also of Chesapeake, David Lee Newell Sr. and his wife, Jacqueline Louise, of Suffolk, John Anthony Newell Sr. and his wife, Linda Ellen, of Chesapeake, and Gary Albert Newell Sr. and his wife, Elaine Theresa, of Virginia Beach; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, with the Rev. Jack Scott officiating. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Viewing will begin Friday and the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday.
