Grace R. Pulley

SMITHFIELD -- Grace Richardson Pulley, 73, of the 1000 block of Old Denbigh Blvd., Newport News, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, in Riverside Regional Convalescent Center. She was a native of Isle of Wight County and a homemaker.

Mrs. Pulley was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the Susanna Wesley Bible Class and the Nettie Beane Circle. She was preceded in death by her husband, Mills Robert Pulley Jr.

Survivors include three daughters, Louise P. Proctor of Smithfield, Margaret P. Hershberger of Williamsburg and Barbara P. Madures of Richmond; one son, Mills Robert Pulley III of Yorktown; one sister, Pearl R. Kinsey of Suffolk; one brother, Dr. George S. Richardson of Pittsburgh, Pa.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Trinity United Methodist Church, Smithfield, with the Rev. Robert Cofield and the Rev. Jack Lynch officiating. Burial will follow in St. Luke's Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in Colonial Funeral Home and suggests memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association (Disease Related Disorders), No. 20, Suite 233, Koger Center, Norfolk, Va. 23502. Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield, is handling arrangements.

William T. Aydlette

HERTFORD -- William Thomas Aydlette, 60, of No. 8 Hunt Club Trail, Holiday Island, and formerly of Hampton and Smithfield, Va., died Tuesday morning, Sept. 15, 1998.

A native of Norfolk, he was the son of the late Thelma Rae DuVal and Robert Winton Aydlette. He was an electrician with Alexander Electrical Contractors and had formerly worked as an officer with the Newport News Police Department.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia Gessner Aydlette; three daughters, Alisa Anne King of Lexington, Va., Laura Leigh Bazemore of Norfolk, and Shelly Marie Barrack of Hertford; three sons, Robert Clifton Aydlette of Edenton, Richard Carlton Aydlette of Richmond and James Gessner of Aurora, Colo.; three sisters, Nancy Evans of Portsmouth, Sandra Wallace of Hertford, and Sharon Pittman of Windsor; two brothers, James Aydlette of Hertford and Douglas Aydlette of Virginia Beach; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Swindell Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Terrance King officiating. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Josephine Bell

WINDSOR -- Josephine Bell, 88, died Sept. 11, 1998. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Pleasant Oak Baptist Church, Windsor. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Sarah A. Bond

WINDSOR -- Sarah A. Bond, 87, of Mourning Road, died Sept. 13, 1998. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Gilliam Funeral Home.

S. Hayes Carter

GATESVILLE -- Stanley Hayes Carter Jr., 73, of the 200 block of High St., died Tuesday, Sept. 15, 1998, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Mr. Carter was born in Gates County. He had served as a deputy in the Gates County Sheriff's Department and for seven years served as the Gates County Clerk of Superior Court. A licensed funeral director, he worked for many years with the former Rountree-Hofler Funeral Home in Gatesville and continued on a part-time basis after it became Twiford's Funeral Home in 1966 and later in 1987 when it became Miller Funeral Home. He was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church, a charter member of the Gatesville Volunteer Fire Department, a 50-year member of the Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126, and a member of the Sunbury Investment Club.

Preceded in death by his father, Stanley Hayes Carter Sr., and his wife, Mildred Turner Carter, he is survived by his mother, Virgie Jones Carter of Chapel Hill, N.C.; two sisters, Faye C. Perry of Suffolk and Carolyn C. Felton of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Willard L. Carter of Washington, N.C., and Forrest Carter of Zephyer Hills, Fla.; several nieces, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home by the Rev. Gene Asbill. Burial will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home and other times at the home of his sister, Faye Perry, 1724 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, Va. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Mary Alice F. Haddock

VANCEBORO -- Mary Alice Franks Haddock, 77, a native of Vanceboro in Craven County, died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998.

She lived in Virginia Beach for a number of years, returned to Vanceboro in 1993 and had just recently moved to Knightdale with her daughter.

Survivors include a son, Donald Thomas Haddock of Virginia Beach; her daughter, Jewel Haddock Eller of Knightdale; sisters, Lina Sorrell of Grifton, Fannie Morris and Agnes Simpkins, both of Vanceboro; a grandchild and great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Wilkerson Funeral Home, Vanceboro.

Blanche C. Hartsell

ALBEMARLE -- Blanche Ramelle Curlee Hartsell, 86, of the 300 block of Palmer St., died Sept. 15, 1998, at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born July 13, 1912, in Union County, N.C., she was a daughter of the late Van Julius Curlee and Dora Velma Simpson Curlee. She was a hairdresser and owner of Palestine Beauty Shop and was a member of First Baptist Church of Albemarle, N.C. She was married to the late Horace Javan Hartsell, who preceded her in death in 1986.

She is survived by a son, Lowell J. Hartsell of Virginia Beach; brothers, Hugh C. Curlee and Bruce J. Curlee, both of Marshville, N.C., and J.V. ``Bud" Curlee of Oakboro, N.C.; sisters, Jennie C. Moore and Lottie C. Deese, both of Marshville, N.C., Bertice C. Bivens of Monroe, N.C., and Brettie C. Griffin of Long Beach, N.C.; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Interment will be in Oakboro Cemetery, Oakboro, N.C. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to The Taylor House, 319 Palmer St., Albemarle, N.C. 28001.

Horace L. Outland

PENDLETON -- Horace Lee Outland, 85, of Route 1, died Sept. 16, 1998. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Severn Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Eugene Perry

NEWPORT NEWS -- Eugene Perry, 60, of the 300 block of Paulette Drive, died Sept. 16, 1998, at Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News.

A native of Bertie County, he was a retired production operator at Anheuser Busch, Inc., in Williamsburg.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Harrell Perry; three sons, Michael Perry and Kevin Perry, both of Newport News, and Bob Perry of Sarasota, Fla.; his mother, Fannie Ruth Matthews Perry of Goldsboro, N.C.; two sisters, Evelyn Perry of Colerain, N.C., and Linda Underwood of Goldsboro, N.C.; three brothers, T.W. Perry Jr. of Stafford, Va., Mack Perry of Colerain, and Edward Earl ``Whitey" Perry of Ahoskie, N.C.; and nine grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Highland Memorial Gardens, Ahoskie, N.C., by the Rev. Jack Byrd. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, and will assemble at the funeral home at 10 a.m. Friday prior to services.

Mary D. Zoll

HERNDON -- Mary D. Zoll passed away Sept. 10, 1998, in Virginia Beach.

She was born Nov. 10, 1904, in Vanderbilt, Pa. She graduated from George Washington University and was a teacher for several years in West Virginia. Later Miss Zoll served as secretary to the ministers of St. John's Episcopal Church and St. Thomas Episcopal Church, both of Washington, D.C. She also worked as secretary to the head of the D.C. Public Library.

Miss Zoll's retirement years were spent in Herndon, Va. She was a member of the Herndon Fortnightly Club, and St. Timothy's Episcopal Church. She enjoyed reading and studying history.

Miss Zoll is predeceased by her father, Charles L. Zoll, and her mother, Sarah McKuen Zoll; three brothers, Alexander Zoll, Dudley Zoll and Matthew Zoll; and one sister, Elizabeth Peck. She is survived by a brother, Jacob Zoll of Perrysburg, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

The family received friends Sept. 16, 1998, at Green Funeral Home, followed by a graveside service at noon at Fairfax City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a favorite charity.

Dwayne C. Spellman

CAPITAL HEIGHTS, Md. -- Dwayne Cornelius Spellman, 38, of the 5100 block of Cranmerway, died Sept. 12, 1998. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Maple Springs Baptist Church, Capital Heights, Md. Robinson & Son Funeral Home Inc., Elizabeth City, N.C., is in charge.

Anthony L. Brickhouse

CHESAPEAKE -- Anthony L. Brickhouse, 28, of the 2700 block of Omar St., passed away Sept. 17, 1998.

Anthony is survived by his wife, Latonya D. Brickhouse; a daughter, April Brickhouse; a son, Anthony Brickhouse Jr., all of Chesapeake; his father and mother, Reginald Bailey and Dinnah F. Bailey of Norfolk; a grandmother, Mary Ann Anderson of Norfolk; mother-in-law, Virgie Griffin, and father-in-law, Daniel Griffin of Chesapeake; four sisters; two brothers; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Holy Temple Pentecostal Church, Chesapeake. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be Monday in Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home.

Seth T. Cuthrell

CHESAPEAKE -- Seth Thomas Cuthrell, 72, of the 600 block of Cardover Ave., went to be with the Lord on Sept. 19, 1998, in Chesapeake.

Born in Hickory, Va., he retired after 39 years as an equipment operator for the city of Norfolk. He was a member of Woodland Heights Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus and member of the Berean Bible Class. He was also a member of Woodmen of the World.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Jean Poovey Cuthrell; a son, Stephen Thomas Cuthrell and his wife, Linda, of Powells Point, N.C.; a brother, Dennis R. Cuthrell Jr. and his wife, Annette, of Chesapeake; two granddaughters, Paula Christine Wilkerson and her husband, Bobby, of Grandy, N.C., and Stacey Lynn Cuthrell of Kernersville, N.C.; and a step great-grandchild, Alan Ingram.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Woodland Heights Baptist Church by Dr. Kenneth Barnes. Burial will be in Woodland Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, Kempsville Road, from 4 to 5 p.m. today and at the residence at all other times. Memorial contributions should be made to Woodland Heights Baptist Church Bus Fund, 529 Providence Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23325.

Ella Lane

CHESAPEAKE -- Ella ``Sandy" Lane, 52, of the 1500 block of Long Ridge Road, died Sept. 19, 1998, in a local hospital.

Mrs. Lane was born in Norfolk on June 24, 1946, to the late Mr. John T. Nelms Jr. and the late Mrs. Reba H. Nelms.

After working as a surgical nurse at Norfolk General Hospital, Mrs. Lane stayed at home to raise her family.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Edgar W. Lane of Chesapeake; two daughters, Darian L. Seward and Dana L. Lane, both of Chesapeake; a sister, Pamela N. Pike of Chesapeake; a brother, John T. Nelms IV of Chesapeake; and two grandchildren, Lane Ryann Seward and Kate Allison Lane, both of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Twiford Funeral Home, Great Bridge, with the Rev. Paul Moore officiating. The family will receive friends at the residence of her sister, 737 Corapeake Drive, Chesapeake.

Claris B. Cooper

NORFOLK -- Claris Babb Cooper, 82, of the 9200 block of Marlow Ave., died Friday, Sept. 18, 1998, in her home.

Mrs. Cooper was a native of Windsor, Va., and was the daughter of the late Adelia Outland and Joseph Leslie Babb Sr.

She retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. after a 30-year career in interior design. She had been a faithful member of Talbot Park Baptist Church for more 46 years, serving as church historian, a Sunday School teacher of the T.E.L. Class and a member of the Chancel Choir. Upon retirement, she chose to begin a new career serving as a Volunteer Service Missionary in the inner city missions of Houston, Texas. She remained in Texas for 10 years. Returning to Norfolk in 1990, she assumed the directorship of Saints Alive, a senior adult performing troupe. Also, she was delighted to serve as chairman and coordinator of the Sunshine Club, a senior adult group in Norfolk.

Survivors include two daughters, Billie Jean Davis and her husband, Kenny, of Birmingham, Ala., and Wanda Cooper Vick of Norfolk; three grandchildren, Heather Vick Powers and her husband, Steven, of Norfolk, Jason Alan Davis and his wife, Hollie, of Birmingham, Ala., and Kevin Heath Vick of Virginia Beach; two brothers, J.L. Babb of Windsor, Va., and William Hurley Babb of Chesapeake; a sister, Evelyn Babb Massey Hitchings of Shakopee, Minn.; two great aunts, Ruby Turner of Suffolk and Faye Smith of Disputanta, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Monday in Talbot Park Baptist Church by Dr. Tim Dixon, the Rev. Thomas Wood, the Rev. Keith Martin and the Rev. Bill Stewart. The family will be in the church parlor before and after the service for a visitation with friends. Burial will be Tuesday, Sept. 22, 1998, at 11 a.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. Memorials may be made to the Talbot Park Baptist Church Senior Adult Ministries. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Clarence Dalferes Jr.

NORFOLK -- Clarence Dalferes Jr. of the 800 block of W. 35th St. died Sept. 15, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Chapel.

Raymond E. Fields

NORFOLK -- Raymond E. Fields, 79, of Autumn Care Nursing Home, died Sept. 18, 1998. Tynes-Edwards & Turner Funeral Service is in charge.
