Hugh H. Sisson III

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Hugh Hamilton Sisson III, 50, of Lakeview Drive, died Aug. 30, 1998, at his residence.

A native of Richmond, he was the son of the late Hugh Hamilton Sisson Jr. He was educated at the Peddie School in Highstown, N.J., and also the University of Virginia. He was certified as a financial planner and stock broker and was a member of Williamsburg Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Penny Tombros Sisson; two sons, Hugh Hamilton Sisson IV and his wife, Kim, of Norfolk and Shane Alan Sisson of Virginia Beach; his mother, Frances Sisson Baldwin of Virginia Beach; his stepfather, Capt. Frank Edward Baldwin, USN (Ret.), of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Frances S. Higgins and her husband, Tim, of Kansas City, Mo., and Mary S. Landon of Virginia Beach; one brother, Gamble M. Sisson of Gloucester Point, Va.; and nieces and nephews, Elsa H. Gerwin, Stacy L. Wojcikowski, William P. Landon III, Anthony J. Vallance, Aimee M. Goodman and Gamble M. Sisson Jr.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, by his uncle, the Rev. Samuel D. McCammon. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The American Heart Association, 7320 Greenville Ave., Dallas, Texas 75231, or to American Diabetes Association, 1660 Duke St., Alexandria, Va. 22314.

Charles R. Stephan

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Retired U.S. Navy Capt. Charles Robert Stephan, 86, died Aug. 30, 1998, in a Virginia Beach hospital.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he was the widower of Eleanor Grace Stephan. Capt. Stephan retired after 30 years from the U.S. Navy and also retired after 15 years as a professor of ocean engineering at Florida Atlantic University. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Kiwanis Club of Virginia Beach and Boca Raton, Fla., and was a past commander, National Legion of Valor, Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. He was graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Class of 1934, and was the recepient of the Navy Cross and two Bronze Star medals.

Survivors include two daughters, Yvonne S. Brown of Virginia Beach and Joan S. Cathcart of Inman, S.C.; two sons, retired U.S. Navy Capt. Charles R. Stephan of South Carolina, Robert W. Stephan of North Carolina; a sister, Marie McGuigan of Florida; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Fort Myers Chapel, Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Legion of Valor, 92 Oakleaf Lane, Chapel Hill, N.C. 27516. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is in charge. 

Eric D. Boone

SUFFOLK -- Eric Darnell Boone, 26, of the 300 block of Little Fork Road, died Aug. 29, 1998. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.

Gladys C. Carr

SUFFOLK -- Gladys Cavender Carr, 71, died Aug. 31, 1998, in Obici Hospital.

She was a member of Beaver Dam Baptist Church, Franklin. She was predeceased by a daughter, Linda C. Swindall, and her parents, Hubert and Pearl Cavender. She was a native of Adams, Tenn.

She is survived by her husband, J.J. Carr; one daughter and son-in-law, JoAnne and Glenn Woolard of Raleigh, N.C.; one granddaughter, Carmen Taylor of Broadway, Va.; one grandson, Bennie Swindall Jr. of New Market, Va.; one great-granddaughter, Mikayla Taylor of Broadway, Va.; three sisters, Shirley Nipper of Knoxville, Tenn., Marie Comperry of Palmyra, Tenn., and Mildred Stuard of Springfield, Tenn.; one brother, Hubert Cavender Jr. of Adams.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Holland-Rideout Funeral Home, Franklin, by the Rev. David Jendrey. Burial will follow in Southampton Memorial Park, Franklin. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. 

Raymond Edwards Sr.

SUFFOLK -- Raymond ``Kurtzwile" Edwards Sr., 62, of the 300 block of Beech St., died Aug. 29, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in First Baptist Church. Applewhite Funeral Home is in charge. 

Markey J. Jacobs

SUFFOLK -- Baby Markey Ja'Juan Jacobs of the 1400 block of Blythewood Lane, died Aug. 27, 1998. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Wyatt & Sons Funeral Home. 

Vantonio D. Madison

SUFFOLK -- Vantonio Darnell Madison, 27, of the 100 block of Pembroke Lane, died Aug. 28, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Antioch United Church of Christ. Crocker Funeral Home is in charge.

Joseph W. Wynne Sr.

SUFFOLK -- Joseph Warren Wynne Sr., 88, of the 100 block of Riverside Drive, died quietly Aug. 30, 1998, at home.

Born in Dunn, N.C., in 1910, the family moved to Portsmouth in 1915. He was the son of Annie Elizabeth Berry Wynne and William Warren Wynne.

He joined Park View Methodist Church in 1932 and later transferred to Monumental United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Seaboard Masonic Lodge No. 56 for 55 years. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard with 38 years of service. He then became the Portsmouth branch manager of Higgins Realty, where he developed the Holly Cove and Arbor Meadows residential communities.

He was married for 55 years to Alice Hodges Wynne until her death in 1995. He was the last living member of his family, which included Verona H. East, Elbert P. Wynne, Thomas B. Wynne and Mary Elizabeth Peed. He is survived by his son, J. Warren Wynne Jr. of Suffolk and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. Raymond H. Edmonds in the sanctuary at Monumental United Methodist Church followed by a short graveside service at Olive Branch Cemetery and a gathering at their Riverside Drive Home. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Loving Funeral Home, Churchland.

If preferred, in lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Monumental United Methodist Church, 450 Dinwiddie St., Portsmouth, Va. 23704. 

Larry R. Taylor

SMITHFIELD -- Larry Ray Taylor, 49, of the 400 block of Watson Drive, died Aug. 30, 1998. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday in Smithfield Assembly of God Church. Colonial Funeral Home is in charge.

Shirley P. White

FRANKLIN -- Shirley Parker White, 56, of the 31330 block of Charles St., died Aug. 29, 1998, at Southampton Hospital. She was a personal care private nurse for the City of Franklin.

Survivors include two daughters, Shelia L. Eure and Regina F. White; two sons, Michael J. White and Reginald L. White; six sisters, Jearleen Warren, Penelpa Cross, Barbara Gatling, Connie Payne, Faye Knight Woods and Nora Boone; six brothers, the Rev. Harry C. Parker, Roger Parker, Fredderick Parker, Jerry Parker, Ronald Parker and Dennis Parker; two aunts, Dessie Coston, Lois Morings; one son-in-law, Preston Eure of Gates, N.C.; one daughter-in-law, Lovine White of Norfolk; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Stoney Branch Baptist Church, Gates, N.C., by the Rev. John Townsell. Burial will be in Parker Family Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at noon. The family will assemble for a service at 1 p.m. Applewhite Funeral Home is in charge. 

Georgia Taylor

ATLANTIC -- Georgia Taylor, 76, died Aug. 28, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Jerusalem Baptist Church, Temperanceville. Wharton Funeral Home, Accomac, is in charge. 

Frank White

PARKSLEY -- Frank White, 80, died Aug. 22, 1998. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today in Wharton Cemetery, Parksley. Wharton Funeral Home, Accomac, is in charge. 

Barbara J. Caley

MAPLE -- Barbara Jean Caley, 12, died Aug. 28, 1998. A funeral will be held at 7 p.m. today in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City. 

Archibald C. Gay Jr.

AHOSKIE -- Archibald Cree ``Archie" Gay Jr., 62, of the 300 block of North St., died Aug. 30, 1998. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. today in Cedarwood Cemetery, Weldon, N.C. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

SUNBURY -- Smith N. Knight, 78, of Sunbury, died Aug. 27, 1998, at Down East Nursing Home, Gatesville, N.C.

Born in Gates County, N.C., he received his master's degree in mathematics and was a retired principal from Person County School System, Roxboro, N.C., after 31 years of service. He was a member of New Middle Swamp Baptist Church where he was a chairman of the Deacon Board and a Sunday School teacher. He was a junior delegate to the North Carolina Senior Tarheel Legislature Inc. under the Albemarle Commission; past member of the board of directors for Gates-Hertford Board of Health; past president of District 15 of North Carolina Retired School Personnel; lifetime member of North Carolina Association of Educators; member of NAACP; Gates County Civic League; secretary of the Jephthah Masonic Lodge No. 174 of Corapeake, N.C.

Survivors include his wife, Mattie Baker Knight; a son, Jonathan Knight of Gardena, Calif.; two sisters, Mable Zachary of Norfolk and Lillie Seymore of Sunbury; four grandchildren, Tanisha, Jasmine and Dominique Knight of Gardena, and Denair McBride of Jonesboro, Ark.; one great-grandchild; five nieces, five nephews, a daughter-in-law; and a sister in-law.

A funeral will be held at noon today at New Middle Swamp Baptist Church by the Rev. Claude M. Odom, Pastor. Burial will be in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, N.C., is handling arrangements.

Jessie W. Liverman

WOODLAND -- Jessie Whitley Liverman, 94, died Aug. 30, 1998.

Mrs. Liverman was the wife of the late Charles Irvin Liverman and the daughter of the late W.R. Whitley and Eliza Nelson Whitley. She was a member of Woodland Baptist Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Sally L. Newsome of Woodland, Irva L. Martin and Shirley L. Askew, both of Conway, N.C.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Woodland Cemetery by the Rev. Heath Lloyd. Massey Funeral Home, Jackson, is handling all arrangements. 

John R. Nelms

AULANDER -- John Robert Nelms, 84, died Aug. 30, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Massey Funeral Home. 

Otis T. Saunders

ELIZABETH CITY -- Otis T. Saunders, 88, of the 1400 block of Peartree Road, died Aug. 27, 1998. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake. Walson Funeral Service, Elizabeth City, is in charge. 

Beulah E. Wilson

ELIZABETH CITY -- Beulah Evans Wilson, 75, of the 400 block of Hariot Drive, died Aug. 28, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Samuel Chapel Holiness Church, Moyock. Walson Funeral Service is in charge.

Edward G. Ferrell

BLACKSBURG -- Edward G. ``Eddie" Ferrell, 55, of Blacksburg, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998.

Born on July 25, 1943, he was the son of Rita Ferrell and the late William Robert Ferrell. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Blacksburg. Eddie was the beloved and longtime head football trainer at Virginia Tech. He held the position for 28 years. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, he held posts at the University of Arkansas and Oregon State University, and with the Minnesota Vikings of the NFL before coming to Virginia Tech in 1970. Eddie was a consummate professional on and off the field; he was always striving to improve his credentials, as evidenced by his earning a master's degree in Athletic Administration from Virginia Tech in December of 1994. Eddie was well known for his compassion and sense of humor, as well as his love of racquetball. Over everything, however, was his love for and devotion to family. He was loved and admired by everyone who know him. His smile and quick wit brightened every room he entered. There has never been a man more adored or respected by his four children and his wife.

Eddie is survived by his wife of 30 years, Ann Gordon Ferrell; his two daughters, Rachael and Rebecca; his two sons, Daniel and William; his daughter-in-law, Karen Ferrell; his mother, Mrs. William R. Ferrell of Fayetteville, Ark.; his brothers, Joseph, William, Robert and Richard Ferrell; his sisters, Rachel McGrew, Rita Keever, Ann Wilson, Carol Jane Duer and Virginia Russell; and by many loving friends and relatives.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the St. Mary's Catholic Church with Father Donald Lemay officiating. Interment will follow in Westview Cemetery in Blacksburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at McCoy Funeral Home, Blacksburg, with a prayer service starting at 7:30 p.m. The body will be taken to St. Mary's Catholic Church Wednesday at 10 a.m. where it will lie in repose until service time. A reception will be held at the church following the service.

Bruce E. Adams

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Bruce Edward Adams, 54, of the 100 block of Westmoreland Circle, died Saturday, Aug. 29, 1998.

Bruce was born in El Paso, Texas, and moved to central Florida in 1988. He was a branch manager for UniFirst Corp., a U.S. Army veteran and an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife of 20 years, Sue Adams; his parents, Charles and Edith Adams of Virginia Beach; daughters, Rebecca Adams of St. Cloud, Fla., and Amy Adams of Kissimmee; and a sister, Nancy ``Nicki" Woolery of Virginia Beach.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. today at the Remington Golf Club in Kissimmee. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to BMTU Fund, c/o Gale Smith, Shands Hospital, P.O. Box 100306, Gainesville, Fla. 32610.

ST. ALBANS, Vt. -- Dorcas I. Boudreau, 72, died Aug. 28, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. today in Heald Funeral Chapel.

NEWARK, N.J. -- Shirley M. Goodwyn died Aug. 27, 1998. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Zion Hill Baptist Church. Cotton Funeral Service is in charge. 

Gladys I. Kretzer

GRAYSON, Ky. -- Gladys Irene Kretzer, 94, died Aug. 29, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in Malone Funeral Home. 

Myrtle Washington

JACKSONVILLE -- Myrtle Washington of the 300 block of Eubanks Road died Aug. 25, 1998. A funeral will be 11 a.m. Thursday in Gabriel Chapel AME Church, Chesapeake. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.
