Hilda L. Query

NORFOLK -- Hilda Lyons Query, 95, of the 1300 block of Bayview Blvd., died Sept. 21, 1998, in Davidsonville, Md.

Mrs. Query was a native of Portsmouth and a resident of Norfolk for most of her life. She was the daughter of the late Patrick J. and Mary Anne Browne Lyons. She was the widow of Joseph Randolph Query Sr. and was preceded in death by her son, J. Randolph Query Jr. She was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include four daughters, Marie Q. Pupo and her husband, Joseph, of Norfolk, Aubrey Q. Consolvo of Norfolk, Gerarde Q. Barth and her husband, Joseph, of Arlington, Margaret Q. Bramble and her husband, James, of Arnold, Md.; a son, Lyons S. Query and his wife, Connie, of Norfolk; her daughter-in-law, Nancy C. Query of Norfolk; a sister, Mary L. Dail of Annandale, Va.; 26 grandchildren and 44 great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Pius X Catholic Church by the Rev. John Dorgan. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be held in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Query was taken home, 1375 Bayview Blvd., Norfolk, the home of Marie and Joseph Pupo, to lie in repose, where friends may pay their respects and visit with the family. Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters or the charity of the donor's choice. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, will be in charge.

Alexander Wynn

NORFOLK -- Alexander Wynn of the 4600 block of Mayflower Road, died Sept. 18, 1998, at a local hospital.

Born in Wakefield, Va., he was a retired weapon repairman from the Naval Air Station and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Queen Street Baptist Church, the Norfolk New Light Masonic Lodge No. 196 F&AM, and Order of Eastern Star Chapter No. 219 PHA.

Survivors include his wife, Rosa Lee Wynn; sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Peter Wherry. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Graves Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Laura P. Anderson

PORTSMOUTH -- Laura Naomi Phelps Anderson, 67, of the first block of Chowan Drive, died Sept. 19, 1998, in Suffolk.

She was the daughter of the late Ernest Linnwood Phelps and Edna Rowland Phelps Lockamy and a native of Maysville, N.C. She retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a supply department purchasing agent. She was a member of Believers Baptist Church, and a Birth Right member of the Nansemond Indian Tribal Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred L. Anderson Sr.; two sons, Edward Alan Anderson and David Wayne Anderson; two brothers, William Lockamy and Joseph Linnwood Phelps; one sister, Juanita Phelps Darling; and a niece, Pattie McNeil.

She is survived by two sons, Fred Anderson and Timmy Anderson, both of Portsmouth; two sisters, Frances Woodard of Portsmouth and Edna Coates of Norfolk; three half sisters, Ida Lockamy Gricus of Cleveland, Tenn., Iris Lockamy Neimi of Norfolk and Sylvia Lockamy Evans of Chesapeake; four brothers, Ernest Phelps of Portsmouth, Victor Phelps of Memphis, Tenn., Vernon Phelps of San Francisco, Calif., and George Phelps of San Antonio, Texas; one half brother, Ronald L. Lockamy of Martinsville, Va.; two grandchildren; one aunt; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. today in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Scott Ranck. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery.

Ollie Brown

PORTSMOUTH -- Ollie Brown, 99, died Sept. 18, 1998. She was the widow of Houston Brown and was predeceased by two sons, Robert Robinson and Maxie Abraham.

Survivors include her foster daughter, Thelma McCall and her husband, Willie L.; a son, Eugene Blackmon; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and two daughters-in-law, Mary Abraham and Catherine Blackmon.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Third Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming. Burial will be in Lincoln Cemetery. The family will assemble at 1401 Holt Drive. Fisher Funeral Home is in charge.

Junius A. Kellogg

PORTSMOUTH -- Junius A. ``Junie" Kellogg, 71, of Riverdale, N.Y., and formerly of Portsmouth, died Sept. 16, 1998, in Kingsbridge VA Hospital, Bronx, N.Y.

Born in Portsmouth on March 27, 1927, he retired as director of Strategic Planning for the mayor's office of New York City. Mr. Kellogg was an Army veteran of World War II. He was predeceased by his parents, Lucy and Theodore Kellogg.

He is survived by a son, Leon Love of Baltimore, Md.; three sisters, Rosa Gibbs and Evangeline Pope of Portsmouth, and Elvin Edwards of Baltimore; three brothers, Theodore Kellogg of Suitland, Md., James Kellogg of Fairbanks, Alaska, and John Kellogg of Chicago; and grandchildren of Baltimore.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Ebenezer Baptist Church, Portsmouth, by Dr. Ben A. Beamer. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. The family will be at Fisher Funeral Home today from 6 to 7 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at 1608 Atlanta Ave. for the procession.

Jack L. Shannon

PORTSMOUTH -- Jack Leland Shannon, 38, of the 1500 block of Mathews Terrace, died Sept. 19, 1998, in Portsmouth. Mr. Shannon, born in Key West, Fla., and raised in Portsmouth, was a plant manager with Sorrentino-Mariani Furniture Co., Norfolk. He was predeceased by his father, Floyd A. Shannon. Survivors include his mother, Mary Huffman Shannon of Portsmouth; wife, Barbara Jean Shannon of Lynchburg, Va.; three brothers, Donald L. Shannon of Hampton, James F. Shannon of Portsmouth and Ludwig Sorrentino of Stafford, Va.; two sisters, Felicia Mariani of Norfolk, Mary E. Grant of Lima, Ohio. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Foster Funeral Home, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Raymond H. Edmonds. Memorial donations may be made to a charity one's choice.

Charlotte H. Whitehorne

PORTSMOUTH -- Charlotte Harris Whitehorne, 84, of the 4000 block of Coffman Blvd., died Sept. 21, 1998.

A native of Portsmouth, she was a member of Believers Baptist Church and a longtime treasurer and secretary of Gleaners Sunday School Class. She was the widow of William Clayton Whitehorne.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlene Wikel and husband, Scotty; and a close friend, Lunette Smith, all of Chesapeake.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Jamey Stuart. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Tiyanna A. Armstrong

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Tiyanna Amika Armstrong, 5 months, of the 1200 block of Edenham Court, passed Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998.

Baby Tiyanna is survived by her parents, Monique Little and Marco Armstrong of Virginia Beach; grandparents, Deborah DeMills, Arthur DeMills, Moses Little and Yvonne Little, all of Chesapeake; a great-grandfather, Leroy Little of Chesapeake; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in St. James AME Church, 501 Dinwiddie St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Gregory K. Jones. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake, is in charge.

James E. Cinnamon

VIRGINIA BEACH -- James E. ``Jim" Cinnamon, 72, of the 4500 block of Church Point Place, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at his home after a long illness.

A native of Louisville, Ky., he resided in Virginia Beach for 38 years. Jim was retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years of service and retired from civil service at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 16 years of service.

Jim joined the Navy in 1943 serving for 21 years, he rose to the rank of chief petty officer. He had several careers within his service to the Navy. While stationed in Corpus Christi, Texas, he became a professional firefighter and eventually fire chief of the Corpus Christi Naval Air Station Fire Department. Not content to remain on dry land, Jim entered and completed Navy dive school and achieved the designation HTCDV. As diving became his passion, he was qualified as a deep sea diver as well as a scuba diver. After his retirement from the Navy, he continued his professional diving career with Norfolk Shipbuilding and Dry Dock and Norfolk Naval Shipyard. Jim retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1987 as a shipwright general foreman.

Jim is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen T. Cinnamon; two daughters, Alice L. Deems and her husband, Jeff, and Susan L. Deems and her husband, Paul; one son, James Edward Cinnamon, all of Virginia Beach; and three grandchildren, Michael Amato of Chesapeake and James and Jennifer Rose of Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. Jim will be returned to the sea that he loved. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Virginia Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad.

S. Robert Howell

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Dr. S. Robert Howell, of Virginia Beach, beloved husband of Gayle, passed away Sept. 19, 1998.

Born in Boston, Mass., on Dec. 4, 1917, he graduated with honors from Harvard Dental School in 1941 and entered the U.S. Navy Dental Corps. He served aboard the USS Miami in the South Pacific during World War II. He later served at the Medical Research Unit in Cairo, Egypt, with subsequent tours in London, the Panama Canal Zone, and lastly at the shipyard in Portsmouth where he retired in 1970 with the rank of captain. Dr. Howell practiced for over 28 years at Wards Corner in Norfolk and at Rose Hall Professional Center in Virginia Beach. He was joined in his Norfolk office by his son Robert W. Howell in 1981.

Dr. Howell was a life member of the American Dental Association, past president of the Canal Zone Dental Society, a member of the Tidewater Dental Association, a fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, the Seaboard Dental Study Club and the Academy of General Dentistry, and a fellow of the American College of Dentist. Active in Rotary, he was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International.

In October of 1942, Dr. Howell married Irene M. Hansman who passed away in September 1987. They are survived by their daughter, Lynn and her husband, Charles Bruce and grandson, Carl F. Bruce of Acton, Mass., and by their son Robert and his wife, Melinda, and grandsons, Stephen L. Howell and William Sidney Howell, both of Virginia Beach. Dr. Howell is also survived by his wife, Gayle Jane, whom he married in April 1990. He was preceded in death by his grandson, Gary J. Bruce.

Dr. Howell had been a member of Old Donation Episcopal Church since 1957 and the Rev. Win Lewis will hold funeral services there on Thursday at 1:30 p.m. Burial with full military honors will be at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel, Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m.

Contributions may be made to Park Place Free Dental Clinic c/o Dr. Robert W. Howell, DePaul Medical Bldg., 110 Kingsley Lane, Suite 312, Norfolk Va. 23505, or the American Heart Association.

William F. Lang

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William F. ``Boobie" Lang, 67, of the 2700 block of West Landing Road, died Sept. 20, 1998.

Mr. Lang was born in Norfolk and had retired as a laborer with R.G. Moore. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and belonged to the V.F.W. Post 4809, the National Rifle Association and was a Methodist by faith.

Survivors include one daughter, Faith Bennett; a brother, Robert E. Lang, both of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Sadie Kennedy of Portsmouth, Shirley Carlson of Norfolk and Ellen Lawwill of Hampton; niece, Sherry Phelps of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Larry O'Brien. Friends may join the family at Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for visitation and viewing.

Dallas S. O'Neal Jr.

BOYKINS -- Dallas S. O'Neal Jr., 78, chief master sergeant (Ret.), died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, at Raleigh Community Hospital. He was born on March 10, 1920, in Northampton County, N.C., the son of the late Dallas S. and Muriel Holder O'Neal.

He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and a retired employee of Bell Helicopter, Fort Worth, Texas. He was a 52-year Mason and a member of the Sam Poe Lodge No. 284, AF&AM in Greenville, S.C. He was predeceased by his wife, Mable Honneycutt O'Neal.

He is survived by a daughter, Ann Benthall, and her husband, John, of Raleigh, N.C.; two grandsons, Dale Ward and Danny Ward of Fort Worth, Texas; sisters, Lillie Mae Stoddard of Rocky Mount, N.C., Mildred Castleberry of Cary, N.C., Marie Pully of Raleigh, N.C., Faye Drewry and her husband, John, and Joyce Ricks, all of Boykins; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Severn, N.C., Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the service and at other times at the home of Joyce Ricks, 32424 S. Main St., Boykins, Va. The family requests that donations be made to the Leukemia Society of America, 2600 N. Central Ave., Suite 936, Alexandria, Va. 22314. Purviance Funeral Home, Boykins, is handling arrangements.

Darvin P. Gonsalez

GARGATHA -- Darvin Darinell Perez Gonsalez, an infant, passed away Sept. 21, 1998. Services were held Monday in Parksley Cemetery. Fox Funeral Home, Temperanceville, was in charge.

Norman U. Marshall

EASTVILLE -- Norman Upshur Marshall, 80, of the 6100 block of James St., died Sept. 17, 1998, in Shore Memorial Hospital.

Born in Makemie Park, Va., he was a retired carpenter. He was the son of the late William Carroll Marshall and Cedar Mae Miller Marshall and the widower of Yvonne Asselin Marshall. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corp (1935-1939), U.S.C.G. (1940-1946) attaining the rank of first class boatswain mate, and U.S.C.G. Reserve (1950-1953).

Survivors include daughters, Norma M. and husband, Wayne Carpenter, of Quinby, Va., and Nilessa ``Nell" M. and husband, Paul Alpert, of Phoenixville, Pa.; sons, William and wife, Deborah Marshall, of Quinby, and Christopher Lee Marshall of Eastville; sisters, Dorris Kilmon of Exmore, Va., and Iris Waters of Wachapreague, Va.; brother, P. Ivan Tarr of Fayetteville, N.C.; grandchildren, Sharon C. Woodall, Karen Lee Carpenter, Kimberly Lynn Marshall, Megan Alexis Carpenter, Michael Norman Marshall, Elizabeth Ellen Carpenter, Hannah Yvonne Alpert and Joshua Benjamin Alpert; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild, Noah Lennon Woodall.

A graveside service was held at 2 p.m. Sept. 19, 1998, by the Rev. Sallye Bowen. Interment was in Quinby Cemetery, Quinby, Va. Williams-Onancock Funeral Home was in charge.

Helen V. Moore

CHINCOTEAGUE -- Helen Virginia Moore, 73, died Sept. 20, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Island Baptist Church. Salyer Funeral Home is in charge.
