WINDSOR -- Jerry Neal Hoggard, 42, died Sept. 20, 1998. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today in Ross Baptist Church Cemetery. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.

Ruth S. Jones

HERTFORD -- Ruth Carolyn Stepney Jones, 47, died Sept. 19, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday in First Missionary Baptist Church. Stallings Funeral Home is in charge.

Charlie E. Jordan Jr.

HOBBSVILLE -- Charlie Earl Jordan Jr., 39, died Sept. 17, 1998. A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday in Blanchard Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Hobbsville. Stallings Funeral Home, Hertford, is in charge.

Elisha T. Knight

CORAPEAKE -- Elisha T. Knight, 85, died Sept. 18, 1998. A funeral will be held at noon Wednesday in New Middle Swamp Baptist Church. Applewhite Funeral Home is in charge.

Percy Paxton

SOUTH MILLS -- Deacon Percy Paxton, 88, of the 1200 block of North Hwy. 343, died Sept. 18, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, South Mills. Stallings Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, is in charge.

Virginia M. Sawyer

CAMDEN -- Virginia Meiggs Sawyer, 83, of 866 N. Highway No. 343, Camden, N.C., died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in the Albemarle Hospital.

She was a native of Camden and the daughter of the late Isaac and Lydia Nash Meiggs and the widow of Thomas Waverly Sawyer. She was a member of the Geneva Baptist Church and the Indian Ridge Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.

Mrs. Sawyer is survived by one son, Waverly Meiggs Sawyer and wife, Linda; and a grandson, Thomas Waverly Sawyer II, all of Camden.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Geneva Baptist Church by the Rev. James Clark. Burial will follow in the Meiggs Family Cemetery, Camden. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church St., Elizabeth City, is in charge of arrangements. The family will be at the residence, 866 N. Highway No. 343, Camden.

John L. Smith Sr.

GATES -- John Lee Smith Sr., 87, of Route 2, died Monday, Sept. 21, 1998, in his home.

Mr. Smith was born in Gates County, the son of the late Johnny Samuel and Mrs. Maggie Eure Smith. He was a retired farmer and businessman and a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and trustee.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Genevieve Brown Smith; five sons, John Lee ``Jack" Smith Jr., Bradford Brown Smith, James W. ``Jimmy" Smith and Samuel Tracy Smith, all of Gates, and Thomas L. ``Tom" Smith of South Hill, Va.; one sister, Kathryn Smith Hayes; one brother, H.B. Smith, both of Gates; and six grandchildren, John Lee Smith III, Corrie Leigh Smith, Lindsay Marie Smith, Megan Miranda Smith, Walter Lee Smith and Nicole Genevieve Smith.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence and following the service the family will receive friends in the church social hall.

David Askew

HAMPTON -- David Askew, 71, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998. Born in Plymouth, Pa., he had been a resident of Hampton for the last 28 years.

Mr. Askew retired from the Army in 1973 after 26 years which included service during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a former member of the Lions Club.

Mr. Askew is survived by his wife, Ruth Elizabeth Askew; his daughter, Barbara McDermott of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; his son, Michael D. Askew of Virginia Beach; his sisters, Gertrude Heness and Genevieve McElwee, both of Plymouth, Pa., and Ellen Housenick of Norfolk; and his grandchildren, Makalia Gleason and Jeremy Gleason.

A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at 10 a.m. today in the Phoebus section of Hampton National Cemetery by the Rev. Mark A. Burgess. The family wishes in lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the American Heart Association, 753 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Suite 2B, Newport News, Va. 23606. Services are being provided by R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home, Hampton.

James W. Beasley Sr.

FORT VALLEY, Ga. -- James Woodward Beasley Sr., 48, of Route 1, died Sunday, Sept. 20, 1998, at his residence.

Mr. Beasley was born in Norfolk, Va., and had lived in Fort Valley for the past four years. He was the son of the late Edward Woodward Beasley and was educated in the Norfolk public schools. He was a small engine mechanic.

Survivors include sons, James Beasley Jr. of Norfolk, Michael Beasley of Illinois; mother, Audrey Beasley; and brother, Edward Beasley, both of Fort Valley.

The family will be at the residence, Route 2, Box 1284, Fort Valley, Ga. Services are private. Bridges Funeral Home, Gray, Ga., is in charge.

Charles J. Smith Jr.

SEATTLE -- Charles Jackson ``Smitty" Smith Jr., 67, passed away Sept. 18, 1998. In loving memory of a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

Robert G. Britton Jr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Robert Glenwood Britton Jr., 83, of the 2600 block of Smithson Drive, died Sept. 26, 1998, at Nansemond Point Nursing Center.

Mr. Britton was born in Norfolk, the son of the late Robert Glenwood Britton Sr. and the late Hattie Gertrude ``Dolly" Roberts Britton. Mr. Britton graduated from Maury High School in Norfolk and attended William and Mary VPI Extension in Norfolk. He was retired from the City of Norfolk and from the State of Virginia where he was the assistant superintendent at the St. Brides Correctional Facility. He also worked for a number of years at the City Market in Norfolk as supervisor. He was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church and was a member and past president of the Hickory Ruritan Club.

Mr. Britton is survived by his wife, Lillian J. Britton of the home; two daughters, Bette Begley of Suffolk and Bonnie B. Carmines and husband, Ralph, of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, James Brian Begley and Leslie Begley, both of Suffolk, and Neil Begley of Portsmouth; and one great-grandchild, Destiny Begley of Suffolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Hickory United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Mercer officiating. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at Twiford Colonial Chapel, Great Bridge, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to Hickory United Methodist Church, 2708 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake, Va. 23322 or to the Hickory Ruritan Club.

Virginia W. Coppedge

CHESAPEAKE -- Virginia ``Louise" Whitby Coppedge, 80, died Sept. 26, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital.

She was born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., to the late John Whitby and the late Fannie Clary Whitby. A member of West Park Church of Christ, she was a Christian woman who loved her family, her Lord, gardening, sewing, bird-watching and quilting. Mrs. Coppedge was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mason Coppedge, and her son, Aaron Mason Coppedge.

She is survived by her two loving daughters, Sandra C. Taliaferro and husband, Harry, of Lynchburg, Va., and Sharon C. Caffee and her husband, Wayne, of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Ryan Mason Wilburn, Amanda Joy Coppedge and Joshua Aaron Caffee; a step-grandson, H. Carlton Taliaferro; and a host of wonderful family and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday in West Park Church of Christ by Keith Lewis. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today at West Park Church of Christ, 926 Cherokee Road, Portsmouth, and other times at the home of Sharon Caffee, 4001 Terry Drive, Chesapeake. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the West Park Church of Christ.

Sarah S. Creech

CHESAPEAKE -- Sarah S. Creech, of the 4300 block of Airline Blvd. died Sept. 19, 1998. A funeral will be at noon Monday at Metropolitan Funeral Service South Chapel, Berkley Ave.

Albert L. Johnson

CHESAPEAKE -- Albert Lewis Johnson, 87, of the 2200 block of Branch Drive, died Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, at his residence.

He was a native of Windsor, Va., but lived in Portsmouth most of his life. Mr. Johnson was the retired owner and operator of Johnson's Grill and Crab House in Portsmouth.

Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Johnson; three daughters, Dorothy Moore and her husband, Gill, of Courtland, Va., Lorraine Banks and her husband, Michael, of Atlanta, Ga., and Patricia Pinkham of Escondido, Calif.; two sons, Donald Johnson and his wife, Phyllis, of Chesapeake, Samuel ``Rudy" Johnson and his wife, Cindy, of Kinston, N.C.; two sisters, Mary Elizabeth ``Bibs" Conner and her husband, Walter, of Richmond, Catherine Moran of Charleston, S.C.; a brother, Burrell Johnson and his wife, Frances, of Portsmouth; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel.

Joseph W. Mayo

CHESAPEAKE -- Joseph ``Joey" Wesley Mayo passed away peacefully on Sept. 23, 1998, in a local hospital after a brief illness.

Born Dec. 9, 1976, Mr. Mayo was a native of Newport News and had lived at 2100 Steppingstone Square, Chesapeake, for a number of years. He was a senior at Indian River High School.

He leaves to mourn his cottage family and friends at SEVTC and his many friends at Indian River High School. He will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched and people who loved him for the unique individual he was.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Graham Funeral Home, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake.

Ruth B. Ellis-Coleman

NORFOLK -- Evangelist Ruth B. Ellis-Coleman, 86, of the 1100 block of Roseclair St., passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 1998, in her home.

She was born in Corapeake, N.C. She was predeceased by her mother and father, Hortense and Sony Smith.

Mrs. Coleman was a loyal employee of Channing and Channing Coat Manufacturing in New York, where she retired after 22 years as a tailor and coat finisher. She was a faithful member of Holy Light Church of Deliverance, where she was the Mother of the Church.

Mrs. Coleman is survived by her husband, Leroy N. Coleman; three sisters, Eula Hinter of North Carolina, Goleona Goodman of New York and Mae Ella Blackley of Norfolk; one brother, Isaac Smith of Columbus, Ohio; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in Holy Light Church of Deliverance, Lincoln and Des Moines Ave., Portsmouth, by Dr. Samuel L. Carruth, pastor. Burial will be in Middle Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Gates County, N.C. Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday in Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake.

Eugenia V. Gregory

NORFOLK -- Eugenia V. Gregory died Sept. 26, 1998, in a local hospital. Service times will be announced. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Helen C. Johnson

NORFOLK -- Helen Virginia Carter Johnson, 75, retired from the Virginia Employment Commission, passed away Friday, Sept. 25, 1998.

She was born Nov. 15, 1922, and was the daughter of Joseph Lafayette Carter and Minnie Eulah Boush Carter. She was a 1941 graduate of Maury High School, a member of McKendree United Methodist Church, and a lifelong resident of Norfolk.

Predeceased by her husband, Milton Dillard Johnson, she is survived by her children, Robert Milton Johnson of Virginia Beach and Carol Dean Gregory of Newport News; a brother, Joseph Carter; and sister, Louise Adams; two grandchildren, Dean Scott and Tamera Lynn Gregory; and two daughters-in-law, Valerie Ann Hutcheon and Lisa Phillips Gregory.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at McKendree United Methodist Church by the Rev. Bruce Carper. Interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, 818 Norview Ave, Norfolk.
