Oreda Mae J. Philyaw

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Oreda Mae J. Philyaw, 86, of Virginia Beach and formerly of Alexandria, Va., died Sept. 25, 1998, at a Virginia Beach hospital.

She was born in Oakdale, Tenn., and was the widow of Arthur Finley Philyaw. She followed and loved the Lord.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Philyaw Bareford of Virginia Beach; a son, Bob Philyaw and his wife, Landon, of Richmond; 11 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Jo Philyaw; a son, Bill Philyaw; a granddaughter and a grandson.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Mount Comfort Cemetery, Alexandria, by the Rev. Dennis Perry. The family will receive friends from 1 to 3 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.

Margaret Thelma Ralston

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Margaret ``Thelma" Rawdon Ralston, 76, passed away on Sept. 25, 1998. Thelma was a longtime resident of the Tidewater area and a native of Sapulpa, Okla.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Cecil D. Ralston; a daughter, Beverly Heffington, her husband, Garland, and their daughters, Jennifer Talley and her husband, Michael, Sicilia Espaillat and a daughter, Carol Estes and her husband, Bill, and their children, Art, Keith and Holly Estes; three great-grandchildren, Ciara, Nicolas and Jakob; a niece, Sue Field; as well as many close and dear friends.

Thelma was a member of Baylake United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Lynnhaven Colony Garden Club, The Kathleen Ober Circle and a member of United Methodist Women. Her generosity and compassionate personality will be remembered by all who knew her.

A funeral will be conducted in Baylake United Methodist Church at 11 a.m. Monday by the Rev. Ted David and Jack Scott. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel.

Lelia F. Sykes

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Lelia Fleming Sykes, 82, of the 5600 block of Wesleyan Drive, passed away Sept. 26, 1998, in Brighton Gardens of Virginia Beach.

Lelia was a native of Norfolk. She will always be remembered as a very strong, loving, giving and devoted wife and mother. Lelia was very dedicated and faithful to God. Lelia was widowed from her loving husband, George F. Sykes, on Jan. 23, 1994.

She is survived by her daughter, Sheila Sykes Flint of Boca Raton, Fla.; a son, Donald W. Sykes of Chesapeake; a sister, Dorothy Kunz of Virginia Beach; brothers Orville Fleming of Tampa, Fla., and John Fleming of Zuni, Va.; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

A graveside service will be held at Colonial Grove Memorial Park at 2:30 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Ernie Myers officiating. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday prior to the service.

Mabel W. Von Dickersohn

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mabel Wyche Von Dickersohn, of the 5800 block of Northampton Blvd., passed quietly and gently into eternal rest on Wednesday evening, Sept. 23, 1998, at Autumn Care Nursing Home.

She was a native of Washington, D.C., and the daughter of the late Napoleon L. and Eliza A. Weaver Wyche. She was the widow of Elmer Von Dickersohn.

She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church and held membership in the Altar Guild, Saint Monica's Guild and the Episcopal Church Women. Educated in Washington, D.C., she was a graduate of Dunbar High School. She attended Minors Teacher's College in Washington and received her undergraduate degree from John C. Smith College, now University. Her master's degree was earned at Howard University. Mrs. Von Dickersohn retired as an educator from the state of North Carolina.

She was a member of the Iota Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., The Moles, The Holidays, Tourjours Cartes, Johnson C. Smith Alumni Association, the Birthday Group and the Brambleton Senior Association of Norfolk State.

She is survived by a niece, Evangeline W. Tross of Madison, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Sandra Smith of New York City, and Gail Bryan of California; and a stepson, Joel Von Dickersohn of New Jersey. She will be sorely missed by a host of other friends, cousins, and other relatives, among them Inez Green and Mabel Revaleon.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Monday in Grace Episcopal Church by the Rev. Father Joseph N. Green Jr. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. today at the funeral home. The body will be placed in the church at 11 a.m. Monday. Alpha Kappa Alpha will hold a memorial service at the funeral home today beginning at 6 p.m. The funeral will assemble at the church at 11:45 a.m. Monday. Riddick Funeral Service is handling arrangements.

Leslie H. Wade

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Leslie H. Wade, 69, passed away in a local hospital on Friday, Sept. 25, 1998.

Mr. Wade served in the U.S. Navy for two years, and was a retired route salesman with Flowers Bakery after 41 years. He had a wonderful sense of humor, even in the hospital, and many friends throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Joyce Wade; his son, David Leslie Wade and his wife, Joyce, of Chesapeake; son-in-law, Sam McIntosh and daughters, Brenda McIntosh, Janice Appell and Carolyn Wade, all of Virginia Beach; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers, James Wade of Georgia and Franklin Wade of Ohio; sisters, Mary Outland of Norfolk and Mattie Reed of Richmond.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A chapel service will be conducted in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park.

William D. Wright

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William Dean Wright, 78, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 26, 1998.

Mr. Wright was a veteran of World War II and was also retired from Bell Atlantic after 30 years of service. He was an assistant pastor at the Open Door Chapel and was the treasurer for the W.O.D.C. radio station.

Survivors include his loving wife, Ella C. Wright; two sons, William D. Wright Jr. of Hanover, Pa., and Thomas O. Wright of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, William D. Wright III, Tammy W. Duff, Sean B. Wright, and Jenifer M. Wright; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the Open Door Chapel by the Rev. Fritz Stegemann and Bill Clevenger, with viewing for family and friends beginning one hour prior at 1 p.m. Interment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park. Kellum Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Allie C. Bradshaw

SUFFOLK -- Allie Cox Bradshaw, 80, died Sept. 25, 1998.

She was the daughter of the late John E. Cones and Emaline Joyner Cones, and the widow of James E. Bradshaw. A native of Isle of Wight County, she was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and was a retired companion aide.

She is survived by her daughters, Dorothy Lee Cook of Elyria, Ohio, and Nancy Cox Claud of Suffolk; sons, Robert Ernest Cox of Greenville, Ky., Walter Ray Cox of Belvidere, N.C., and Allen Y. Cox of Carrollton, Va.; stepdaughters, Dorothy B. Wells of Portsmouth, Annie B. Teller and Frances B. Posey, both of Chesapeake; 17 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Hill Funeral Home with the Rev. T. M. Frye officiating. Interment will be at Holly Lawn Cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and other times at 1065 Nansemond Parkway, the home of Nancy C. Claud.

Bette A. Hahn

SUFFOLK -- Bette Allen Freid Hahn, 72, of the 500 block of Dumville Ave., died Sept. 26, 1998.

A native of Belleville, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Bessie Allen and Claude E. Fried. Mrs. Hahn was a member of Suffolk Presbyterian Church, the Social Club and the Riverview Garden Club.

She is survived by her husband, Herbert John Hahn Jr.; one daughter, Susan H. Smith of Hamilton, Mass.; two sons, Christopher John Hahn of Winchester and Herbert John Hahn III of Chesapeake; two sisters, Lois F. Coffin of Dallas, Texas, and Nancy Walsifer of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; three grandchildren, Jeffery and Bryan Hahn, and Callie Elizabeth Smith.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Suffolk Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Donald F. Hammond. Memorial donations may be made to Suffolk Presbyterian Church, 410 N. Broad St., Suffolk, Va. 23434. The family will be at the residence following the service. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva A. Stratton

SUFFOLK -- Eva Artis Stratton, 87, of the 1000 block of Portsmouth Blvd., died Sept. 25, 1998, in Parkview Nursing Home, Portsmouth.

A native of Southampton County, she was the daughter of the late Joe Early Artis and Nettie Artis Britt, and the widow of Earl Stratton. She was a member of First Corinthian Baptist Church, New York.

Survivors include a sister, Marie A. Myrick of Suffolk; a brother, Hugh A. Britt of Philadelphia, Pa.; a special friend, June Perry of Philadelphia, Pa.; several nieces, nephews, and a host of loyal relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Crocker Funeral Home by the Rev. Vernon Artis. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Mrs. Marie A. Myrick, 1074 Portsmouth Blvd.

Willie R. Armstrong

NEW CHURCH -- Willie R. Armstrong, 80, died Sept. 24, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Mark United Methodist Church. Wharton Funeral Home, Accomac, is in charge.

Tom Avera

PITTSBORO -- Tom Avera, 77, died Sept. 24, 1998, at his Fearrington Village Home, after a long and courageous struggle with cancer.

A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., and a longtime resident of New York City, Mr. Avera was a professional actor and the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. T.A. Avera of Rocky Mount.

Mr. Avera received a B.A. and M.A. in Theater Arts from the University of North Carolina -- Chapel Hill, where he was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity and the Order of the Golden Fleece. He received a national award for writing an original stage play, and made his Broadway debut as a dancer in ``One Touch of Venus" with Mary Martin. Avera had lead roles on Broadway in ``Carousel" and ``Oklahoma" and was a charter member of the acclaimed Actors Studio where he studied with Elia Kazan and Lee Strasburg. Mr. Avera's television credits include ``Studio One," ``Armstrong Circle Theater," ``Suspense," ``Playhouse 90," ``Dragnet," ``Lights Out" and ``Climax." He also starred as Sid Caesar's first straight man in ``Your Show of Shows." Avera's national touring credits included lead roles in ``Cactus Flower," ``Forty Carats," ``Annie" and ``The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas." In summer theaters he starred in ``Bells Are Ringing," ``Can Can," ``Silk Stockings," ``Carnival" and ``The King and I," in which he played the King, as well as other productions. Avera's most recent Broadway appearance was a two-year run in ``Woman of the Year" with Lauren Bacall and then Raquel Welch. His last theater tour was as ``Daddy Warbucks" in ``Annie." Between stage engagements, Mr. Avera traveled the world as a singer/pianist on major cruise lines and at premier resorts.

Mr. Avera is survived by his sister, Frances Gaither of Elizabeth City, N.C.; two nieces, Robin Gaither and Leigh Jones; Waldron and Avera Jones; his grand-nephews and niece.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 3, 1998, at Pineview Cemetery in Rocky Mount, N.C. Gifts in lieu of flowers are requested to Lineberger Cancer Research Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., or Hospice of Chatham County, Pittsboro, N.C. Griffin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ruby T. Davidson

COLERAIN -- Ruby Taylor Davidson, 93, of the 100 block of Quebec Road, died Sept. 25, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3 p.m. today in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie.

June P. Whitehurst

ELIZABETH CITY -- June Price Whitehurst, 67, of the 700 block of South Road St., died Sept. 24, 1998. A funeral will be held at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Cornerstone Missionary Baptist Church. Robinson & Son Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert G. Atchison

ALEXANDRIA -- Robert G. Atchison, beloved husband of Margaret G. Atchison, died Sept. 24, 1998.

He is also survived by his children, Patricia Parker, Bobbi Kroggel and Mary Butler; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association. Demaine Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
