Lucy B. Walton

GLENNS -- Lucy B. Walton, 68, died Saturday, Sept. 26, 1998.

She was predeceased by her son Doug Walton and is survived by her husband Alvin D. Walton; two daughters, Faye Walton of Christchurch and Wanda Walton of Glenns; a son, Gary Walton of Norfolk; two sisters, Mary Seward of Dunn, N.C., and Margaret Prince of Housham, Pa.; and one grandson, Christopher Brightwell of Christchurch.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Interment will be in Salem United Methodist Church Cemetery, Gloucester. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial gifts may be made to the Gloucester Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1417, Gloucester, Va. 23061.

Jacqueline G. Hearn

PHILADELPHIA -- Jacqueline Gray Hearn died Sept. 19, 1998, in Philadelphia, Pa., at age 67.

Mrs. Hearn was born in Norfolk, Va. She was the daughter of the late Julius B. Gray and Bessie P. Gray, and the sister of the late Edna G. Smith.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert L. and Carol Swinson; three grandchildren, Valerie, Christopher and Melissa, all of Philadelphia; a sister, Alta G. Drummond, and brother, Julius B. Gray Jr., both of Virginia Beach.

Mrs. Hearn was very active as a volunteer in the Philadelphia community.

John E. Porter

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- John E. Porter, 61, died Sept. 24, 1998. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in New Haven Baptist Church. Hertford County Undertakers is in charge.

Odessa Chesson

CHESAPEAKE -- Odessa Chesson, 79, of the 1300 block of Deep Creek Blvd., died Sept. 21, 1999, at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.

Born in Plymouth, N.C., Mrs. Chesson had retired in 1994 as a cosmetologist after 50 years of service. She graduated from Washington County Training School, Plymouth, N.C., in 1938, and La Vogue Scientific School of Beauty Culture in Richmond in 1939. She was a founding member of Mount Olive Church of Christ Disciples of Christ, Portsmouth. She was a church Mother; president of the Pastor's Aide; vice president of the Missionary Circle; member of Chancel Choir; a Sunday School teacher and a church secretary.

The widow of Minister C.D. Chesson, she is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Johnson of Virginia Beach, Shirley Glaude of East Orange, N.J., and Mary Tydings of Norfolk; two sons, Cede Chesson of East Orange, and Jerry Chesson of Norfolk; three sisters, Ethel Scott of East Orange, Annie Jacocks of Chesapeake and Dorothy Purkett of Newark, N.J.; a brother, Thomas Hedgebeth of Plymouth, N.C.; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Maggie and Benjamin Hedgebeth, and a son, Cecil Chesson.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. today at New Hope Baptist Church, 1316 Gust Lane, Chesapeake, by Elder Charlie Butler. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The body will be taken to the church at 9 a.m. today. The family will be at the residence. Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth, is handling arrangements.

William R. Powers

CHESAPEAKE -- William R. Powers, 76, of the 100 block of Clover Drive, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999.

Mr. Powers was born in Norfolk County and was the son of the late Alonzo G. and Ada Sykes Powers. He was a retired battalion chief for the City of Chesapeake Fire Department, where he served for 42 years. Mr. Powers was a member of Centerville Baptist Church, Chesapeake Retirees Employees' Association and Great Bridge Volunteers. He was also a Mason.

Mr. Powers is survived by his wife, Linda M. Powers; three sons, Darrell Powers and his wife, Melitta, Gary Powers and his wife, Julie, all of Norfolk, and Wayne Powers of Chesapeake; a sister, Era Mae Turlington and her husband, Harry, of Chesapeake; a grandson, Brandon Ray Powers of Norfolk; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, with the Rev. David Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to Gideon's International, P.O. Box 1051, Chesapeake, VA 23327, or to the Sidney M. Oman Cancer Treatment Center at Chesapeake General Hospital, 736 Battlefield Blvd. South, Chesapeake, VA 23322.

John E. Robinson Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- John Edward Robinson Sr., 64, of the 2800 block of Candlewood Court, died on Sept. 25, 1999, in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mr. Robinson Sr., a native of Mobile, Ala., born Aug. 4, 1935, was a devoted Jehovah's Witness and served as an elder and regular pioneer of the Indian River, Chesapeake, congregation. He was a retired Longshoreman, Union Local No. 1248, and a chief cook for the Merchant Marine. He also was known for his diverse talents, delight in the culinary arts, generous hospitality and especially his love for the public preaching and teaching of the Good News of God's Kingdom through Jesus Christ.

His faithful and devoted wife of 42 years, Nina E. Robinson, survives him. Also left to mourn are his nine loving, close-knit children, Mrs. Deborah M. Charity of Chesapeake, Mr. Charles Alfred Matthews of Coatesville, Pa., Ms. Merry K. Matthews of Chesapeake, Ms. Mamie Finch of Daphne, Ala., Mr. Abrah V. Matthews and Mrs. Karen R. Brayboy, both of Virginia Beach, Mr. John Edward Robinson Jr. and Ms. Zina F. Robinson, both of Chesapeake, and Mr. George Lee S. Robinson of Portsmouth. Mr. Robinson also is survived by two sisters, Ms. Ruth Craig and Ms. Elizabeth Simons; two brothers, Mr. Nelva and Mr. Lewis Simons, all of Mobile; 27 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; four daughters-in-law, two sons-in-law; and a host of special relatives and friends.

His funeral will be held at noon Wednesday in Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, 3662 Humbolt St., Norfolk. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. Visitation with the family will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel, 601 N. Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Watchtower, c/o Indian River Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses, 681 Oak Grove Road, Chesapeake, VA 23320.

John M. Brown

NORFOLK -- John McCrary Brown, 91, died Sept. 25, 1999, in a local hospital.

He was born in Royston, Ga., and was predeceased by his wife, Hilda Blake Brown. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a chief quarterman after 40 years of service. He was a member of Bayside Baptist Church and the Cornerstone Men's Bible Class. He also was a member of Oceanview Masonic Lodge No. 335 and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include three daughters, Carolyn B. Tomlinson and her husband, Buddy, Beverly B. Williams and her husband, Buff, all of Virginia Beach, and Shirley B. Forehand and her husband, Edwin, of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren, Gary, Richard and Stephen Tomlinson, Michael and Robert Williams, and Bradley and Ryan Forehand; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to Bayside Baptist Church Building Fund.

Margaret H. Coffman

NORFOLK -- Margaret Hunter Coffman, 80, of the 7000 block of Auburn Ave., passed away Sept. 24, 1999.

Born in Masontown, Pa., she was the widow of Arthur R. Coffman and was a retired retail clerk at Nelco Department Store.

She is survived by two daughters, Inez Stroud of Orlando, Fla., and Juanita Smith of Texas; three sons, Arthur Coffman of Hartfield, Va., Jack Coffman of Largo, Fla., and Jerry Coffman of Norfolk; 18 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Friends may join the family at the funeral home for visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service.

Julia D. Howard

NORFOLK -- Julia D. Howard, 76, of the 200 block of 32nd St., died Sept. 24, 1999.

Born in Scotland Neck, N.C., she was a member of Mount Nebo RZUA Church, where she was a missionary. She was also a member of Truxton Chapter No. 63 Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband, James Howard; five daughters, Gloria Jones, Harriet Washington, Rebecca Grimstead, Charlotte Slaughter and Loida Daniels; three sons, General Washington Jr., Alvin Washington and James Howard Jr.; a sister, Priscilla Perkins; 16 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Mount Nebo RZUA Church, 2515 High St., Portsmouth, by Dr. Calvin Merritt. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will be at Fisher Funeral Home from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Blanquita L. Jimenez

NORFOLK -- Blanquita Luna Jimenez, 53, died Sept. 25, 1999 in her residence.

She was born in Kawit, Cavite, Philippines, on Jan. 9, 1946, and is predeceased by her mother, Dionicia Jimenez.

Survivors include her father, Alfredo Jimenez of Norfolk; five brothers, Artemio Jimenez, Antonio Jimenez, Eufemio Jimenez, Josefino Jimenez and Armando Jimenez, all of the Philippines; seven sisters, Felicitas Dondonayos of the Philippines, Estrella J. Jones of England, Rowena Jimenez, Cynthia J. Cabales and her husband, Ran Cabales, Alicia Jimenez, Miriam Guieb and Edith Mendoza, all of Norfolk; two stepsisters, Maricel Jimenez and Kathleen Jimenez, both of the Philippines; a nephew, Gilburt Cabales of Norfolk; nieces, Anna Cabales Tucker and her husband, Kevin, and their son, Drake, Louella Cabales, Jane Marie Cabales and Maricar Jimenez, all of Norfolk. She is also survived by her nephews and nieces from the Philippines; special friends, Vis Reyes and Nita Altares; relatives and friends, especially from Kawit Association of Tidewater; special children close to her heart, Darcy Caja, Monica and Tiffany Aragon and Claudine Reyes; and extended family, Jannette Paselio and Reuben Dio.

A funeral will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Father Leo Manalo. The family will remain at the funeral home until 9 p.m. to greet friends. The family will also receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Philippines at a later date.

Essie C. Lorson

NORFOLK -- Essie Mary Cole Lorson died Sept. 25, 1999. A native of Pensacola, Fla., she was the widow of Joseph L. Lorson. She was a member of Legion of Mary and had been a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church since 1936.

Survivors include two daughters, Agatha V. Jenkins of Virginia Beach and Joyce A. Whitman of Cherry Hill, N.J.; six sons, Joseph R. Lorson of Jacksonville, N.C., Brendan B. Lorson, Basil R. Lorson and Douglas S. Lorson, all of Norfolk, Marcian L. Lorson of McHenry, Md., and Martin G. Lorson of Virginia Beach; 22 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and a special niece, Anna Johnston of Norfolk. She was predeceased by daughter, Mary Y. Crevier and sons, William B. Lorson and Cole St. John Lorson.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church by Fr. Lou Ruoff. Friends may join the family for viewing from 5:30 to 7 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. A reception will be held following the burial at 8800 Gramel St., Norfolk, home of grandson, Brian Lorson.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Holy Trinity Catholic Church or the Holy Trinity food bank. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.

Ida Sessoms

NORFOLK -- Ida Sessoms, 58, of the 300 block of S. Main St., died Sept. 24, 1999, in Chesapeake General Hospital, Chesapeake.

Born in Norfolk, she was a bus driver for the Norfolk Stop Program. She was a member of Olive Grove Baptist Church, Norfolk, and a member of its Pastors Aide Society and the Usher Board.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Sessoms; a daughter, Lillie Williams; two stepdaughters, Louise Sessoms and Samantha Sessoms; a son, Lionell White, all of Norfolk; a stepson, Robert Sessoms Jr. of Chesapeake; and three brothers, Willie Richardson, James Richardson and Clarence Richardson, all of Norfolk.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Olive Grove Baptist Church, Norfolk, by the Rev. Harry A. Davis. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Fitchett Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Raymond H. Holland

PORTSMOUTH -- Raymond Hueter Holland, 73, of the 200 block of Snead Fairway, died Saturday, Sept. 25, 1999, in a Portsmouth hospital.

He was a native of Suffolk and was the husband of Edith Holland. He retired from C & P Telephone as a foreman. He was a member of United Congregational Christian Church.

Besides his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Ann Cotton, and a son, Robert Holland, both of Portsmouth; a brother, John Holland of Seabrook, Texas; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, by the Rev. James R. Luck. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will be at the residence.
