PORTSMOUTH -- James Andrew Perkins of the 500 block of Washington St. died Sept. 24, 1999, in Maryview Medical Center.

Dorothy H. Sammons
PORTSMOUTH -- Dorothy Hughes Sammons of Mayfair House died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, after a long illness. Dorothy fought a long battle with congestive heart failure and complications.
She was a native of Haw River, N.C., and was the daughter of the late Ralph and Christine Sykes Hughes. She was the widow of retired Cmdr. Howard Sammons. Dorothy served with the Waves in World War II, was a graduate of Keyes Business College and a homemaker. She was a member of Pinecrest Baptist Church.
She is survived by a son, Jon Charles Humason; two sisters, Hope Hughes McLain of Carrboro, N.C., and Nancy Hughes Leach of Haw River; two stepdaughters, Patricia S. Brindley and husband, Richard, and Pamela S. Henshaw and husband, Robert; four stepgrandchildren; and two stepgreat-grandchildren. Dorothy had been surrounded by a host of friends, including Melody and Bobby Clinton and Benetia Farrell and the many church friends who brought happiness to Dorothy during her illness.
Her funeral will be at Pinecrest Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Tuesday by the Rev. Tom Potter. Burial will be at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to Pinecrest Baptist Church, 209 Felton Road, Portsmouth, VA 23701, or a donation be made to your favorite charity. Jim Beck
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Jim Beck died peacefully at home on Sept. 26, 1999, after a valiant fight against lung cancer.
Jim is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Joyce Beck; his adoring children, Lisa Ehrhardt and her husband, Steve, Jeff Beck and his wife, Lisa, Chris Beck and his wife, Julie, and Cathy Beck; a brother, Samuel Beck; a sister, Joyce Askew; and two grandchildren, Ashley and Stephen Ehrhardt.
Services will be private. Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road Chapel, is handling arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
James Norman Bell
VIRGINIA BEACH -- J. Norman Bell II of the 2100 block of Dawn Ave. went home to the Lord on Sept. 25, 1999. He died at home in the loving care of his family after a brave 13-year battle with lung cancer.
Mr. Bell is survived by his wife of 62 years, Millie Jester Bell; daughter Nancy Bell Bridges and her husband, Lewis; daughter Mary Bell Myers and her husband, Earl; and son James Norman Bell III and his wife, Deborah. He is also survived by six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Doris Nelson, and one brother, John Bell, both of Baltimore.
Mr. Bell was a member and deacon of Bayside Baptist Church. He was a Mason and a member of Ocean View Lodge No. 335, a 32nd-degree Mason of the Scottish Rite and a member of Eastern Star Berkley Chapter No. 52.
Mr. Bell was born in Crisfield, Md., but resided in the Norfolk-Virginia Beach area since 1942. Mr. Bell was a builder and general contractor since 1932. He was vice president of the Carter-Bell Corp. and responsible for the construction of more than 600 7-Eleven Stores in Virginia and throughout the southeast.
As owner of the Retrac Corp., he built the Jack Rabbit Self Storage Warehouses, of which he was part owner.
Norm will be greatly missed by his family and friends. We all look forward to being with him and the Lord.
A funeral will be held Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. at Bayside Baptist Church by the Rev. Donald G. Wilson. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will be at Hollomon-

Kathleen M. Brock
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Kathleen M. ``Nannie" Brock, 92, widow of Floyd H. Brock, entered into rest on Sept. 25, 1999.
She was born in Roanoke, Va., on Nov. 2, 1906, and moved to Norfolk at an early age. She was a graduate of Maury High School. She had been a volunteer at Lake Taylor Hospital and other senior citizen volunteer organizations, and was recognized as retired senior volunteer program worker of the year by the Kiwanis Club of Norfolk for 1980-81.
Survivors include two daughters, Evelyn B. Swoope and Jean L. Brock; two sons, Joseph E. Baines and his wife, Betty L. Baines, and James H. Brock and his wife, Verna ``Bunny" Brock; four brothers; five sisters; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Altmeyer Funeral Home Chapel, Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Although Nannie will be truly missed, she will always be remembered for her compassion, smile and love of family. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Ronald E. Bryant
VIRGINIA BEACH -- RonaldEugene ``Ron" Bryant, 62, of Knotts Island, N.C., passed away Sept. 25, 1999. He was retired from Leigh Memorial Hospital as a plumber. He also was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, where he served for 17 years.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jennie W. Bryant; two daughters, Laura Colbert and Wendy Bryant; two sons, Paul Bryant and Ronnie Bryant; he was ``Pop" to Andy Hill and his wife, Cathy, Belinda Hill, Theresa Caprio, Lewis Hill, Lee Hill and his wife, Sallie; three brothers, Charlie Bryant, Joe Bryant and Herman Bryant; four sisters, Joanne Edwards, Bootsie Barden, Linda Harrison and Laverne Tvett; 12 grandchildren; and he was a loved uncle and friend to many more.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Tidewater Funeral Choices, where a chapel service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Imelda V. Gemo died Sept. 21, 1999.
A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 7 p.m. today in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. A graveside service will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday in Arlington National Cemetery.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Samuel M. Gilliatt, 83, of the 2200 block of S. Pastures Lane, died Sept. 25, 1999.
He was born in Louisville, Ky., and was the widower of Margaret A. Gilliatt. He was a retired salesman.
Survivors include a son, Michael Gilliatt and his wife, Kathleen, of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Thomas Gilliatt of Fairfax, Va., and Andrew Gilliatt of Blacksburg, Va.

Ethan Z. Paloma
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Our Little Angel, Ethan Zachariah Paloma, infant son of Andrew Max Paloma and Georgia Lea Paloma, went to be with the Lord on Sept. 25, 1999.
He is survived by his loving family, his paternal grandparents, OBDulio Paloma and FE Paloma; maternal grandparents, Gary Baxter and Karen Baxter; great-grandfather, Edwin Baxter; great-grandmother, Keo Lang; and many loving aunts, uncles and cousins. We all will miss you and you will live in our hearts forever.

Sylvia C. Staicer
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sylvia Clontz Staicer, 60, died Sept. 25, 1999, in a Norfolk hospital.
Mrs. Staicer was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Charlotte, N.C., and graduated from Virginia Intermont College in 1959. She was a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and was a member of Catholic Daughters of America. Mrs. Staicer worked for Price-Waterhouse, Norfolk Academy, Marion Manor and Our Lady of Perpetual Help. She was preceded in death by her mother, Maxine Baysden Clontz, and a brother, Robert L. Clontz.
Survivors include her father, Robert L. Clontz; her stepmother, Pearl L. Clontz; her husband, Frank Staicer; stepbrother, Joe W. Luter III; two stepsisters, Susan Luter Anderson and Dorothy Luter Hobson; five stepchildren, Patricia Cimino, Eileen Johnson, Robert Staicer, Frank Staicer II and Joann Demato; a sister-in-law, Carol Clontz; two nephews, Robert B. Clontz and John ``Bradley" Clontz; and one aunt, Dorothy White.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at noon Tuesday at St. Gregory's Catholic Church. Burial will be Thursday at St. Vincent's Cemetery in Latrobe, Pa. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory's Catholic Church Building Fund. H.D. Johnny L. Berry
FRANKLIN -- Johnny Lee Berry, 57, died Sept. 25, 1999. He was a Baptist and a longtime friend of the local VFW.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Berry; his mother, Avis Berry; five stepchildren; and many friends.
