HERBERT
Marianne Herbert, age 52, of Warsaw, died after a brief illness on Saturday, August 31, 2002. Marianne was predeceased by her brother, Tommy. She is survived by her parents, Tom and Dot Herbert; her devoted brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Kathy Herbert. Also surviving are nephews, Tommy and Chance Herbert; and niece, Ashley Herbert. There will be a visitation at the Welch-Marks Funeral Home, 10300 Richmond Road, Monday night from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3 at Warsaw United Methodist Church Cemetery. HUDSON
Rosalie H. Hudson of South Hill, died August 30, 2002. Survived by her daughter, Deborah H. Naggs of Fredericksburg; seven grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Harvey Martin Hudson; and a daughter, Geri Hudson Hamlet. Graveside service Monday, September 16, 2002 at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. LAWRENCE
Helen P. Lawrence, age 80, of Amelia, died on August 31, 2002. A clerk with the post office, she was predeceased by her husband Leonard Lawrence. She is survived by her daughter, Shelby Lawrence; and grandchildren, Charity and Angela Harlow, and Brett Sullivan. A chapel service will be held Wednesday, 11 a.m. at Hillsman-Hix Funeral Home, 16409 Court St., with burial at Amelia Presbyterian Cemetery. LEE
Amos L. Lee Sr. of Midlothian departed this life in McGuire Veterans Hospital Thursday, August 29, 2002. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy G. Lee; two sons, Amos Jr. and Claude Lee; four grandchildren, Melanie Jones, Renee, Stacey and Claude Lee; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Jean Cooke, Robinette Friend and Bettie Clarke; two brothers, Patrick and Roger Lee; two aunts, six sisters-in-law, five brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends, among them a devoted friend, James Steed. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 3, 1 p.m., Mt. Sinai Baptist Church, 200 Old Hundred Road, Rev. R. Alexander Chavis, pastor, officiating. Interment church cemetery. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services assemble at the church Tuesday, 12:30 p.m.

LUMPKIN
Emma M. Lumpkin of Mechanicsville, Va. departed this life August 29, 2002. She is survived by a devoted daughter, Jean R. Crump; three grandchildren, Veronica Taylor, Jeanette Hicks, and Daniel W. Crump III; three great-grandchildren, Brittney Davis, Daniel W. IV, and Jonae Crump; one brother, William W. Minor Sr.; one sister-in-law, Novella Minor; a host of nieces and nephews, and other relatives and friends. Professional services provided by Crawley Funeral Home, 3810 Meadowbridge Rd. Funeral services will be held 12 noon Tuesday, First Union Baptist Church, 6232 Pole Green Rd. Remains will lie in state one hour prior to funeral service. Dr. B.S. Giles officiating. MESSICK
Virginia Talley Messick, 85, of Coles Point, passed away August 31, 2002. Mrs. Messick was preceded in death by her husband, Eldridge Anderson Messick; and her daughter, Peggy Messick Murphy. She is survived by one son, James E. Messick and his wife, Jinx of Coles Point; two grandchildren, James Russell Messick and Todd Eldridge Messick; and three great-grandchildren, Loren Russell Messick, Kara Jewell Messick, and Talley Gregory. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, September 3, at Carmel U.M. Church with burial in the church cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Memorial contributions may be made to Westmoreland County Rescue Squad, Box 37, Mount Holly, Va. 22524.

NEWMILLER
Judith "Judy" Jeanette Newmiller, 33, of Chesapeake, died Friday, August 30, 2002 in a local hospital. She was a native of Chesapeake, Va., and was the wife of Ethan Lane Newmiller; mother of Ryan Mitchell Beadle and Gabriella Elane Newmiller of Chesapeake; and was the daughter of Robert H. Beadle Jr. of Minnesota, and Mrs. Mary-anne L. Grubbs of Wake, Va. A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Snellings Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Ron Wirth. The family will be at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m., and on Wednesday will remain until 9 p.m. to greet friends.

NORTHERN
Edith McCrobie Northern, 94, of Weems, passed away on August 31, 2002 in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Peyton Lewis Northern; and three sisters and two brothers. She is survived by her sister-in-law and caretaker, Mrs. Mary McCrobie of Weems; a brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John W. McCrobie Jr. of Salisbury, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Northern was a lifetime member of Campbell Memorial Church and ran the old McCrobie General Store in Weems for many years. Remains rest at the Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock, where the family will receive friends on Tuesday, September 3, from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 3 p.m. at the Kilmarnock Seventh Day Adventist Church Cemetery, Kilmarnock, Va.

Joseph (Tony) A. Smith, 48, was promoted to glory on August 31, 2002. He is survived by four brothers, Danny, Paul, Mark, and Larry Smith; one sister, Betty Beane; two half brothers, Gene and Arthur Smith; two half sisters, Alice Mullins and Dorothy Lowery. Mr. Smith worked as a brickmason. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, and where funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday. Interment Bonovitch Family Cemetery, Powhatan, Va.

Sarah Didlake Smithers, age 85, of Mechanicsville, widow of William O. Smithers, departed this life Thursday, August 29, 2002. She is survived by her loving brother, John Didlake and his wife, Jane of Chesterfield; and eight nieces. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bristow-Faulkner Funeral Home, Saluda. Interment will be in Lower King and Queen Baptist Church Cemetery, Dragonville. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., Richmond. SOLOMON
Curtis O. Solomon of Richmond, former owner of Gregory's Ballroom and Restaurant, departed this life Sunday, September 1, 2002. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral notice later.

THURSTON
James P. (Jinks) Thurston, 83, of Columbia, Va., died August 31, 2002. He was preceded in death by three brothers, and four sisters. He is survived by two sisters, Martha Hawk and Avis Grady; one brother, Charles A. (Boodly) Thurston; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Remains rest at the Norman Funeral Home, Goochland, Va., where family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral service will be held Tuesday, 2 p.m. at Mizpah Christian Church. Interment Thurston Family Cemetery, Tabscott Rd. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Fife Fire and Rescue Squad Company 4.

TRUEHEART
Departed this life September 1, 2002, Earl F. Trueheart of Manquin, Va. His remains rest at the Henry W. Dabney Funeral Home, 518 N. Washington Hwy., Ashland. McCarthy, Director.

TUCKER
A.F. "Pete" Tucker passed away August 31, 2002. He was born November 24, 1917, and was a lifelong resident of Crewe, Virginia. Pete was retired from the N&W Railroad as a clerk, and served as a local chairman and general chairman for the Brotherhood of Railway Clerks. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater as a Master Sgt., and was recalled during the Korean Conflict. He was a 32nd degree Mason and has been a member of the Masons for over 60 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved the fields and waters of Southside Virginia. He passed down his knowledge and respect of the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, June B. Tucker; two children, James A. Tucker and wife, Barbara of Amelia Island, Florida, and Cindy Jones (Wheeler) of York, S.C.; four grandchildren, James Pete Tucker of Boulder, Colo., Stephen Wesley Ingram of Irmo, S.C., Jennifer and Rebecca James of York, S.C.; and brother, Lynwood Hugh Tucker and wife, Dixie of Vinton, Va. Chapel services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 3, 2002 at the Jennings-McMillian Funeral Home, Crewe, Va. Interment will follow at the Crewe Cemetery with Masonic Rites. The family will receive friends at the funeral home 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital, Greenville, S.C. or the building fund of St. John's Lutheran Church, Farmville, Va.

VENABLE
Mrs. Olia H. Venable of Richmond, formerly of Rocky Mount, N.C., and widow of William M. Venable, departed this life Wednesday, August 28, 2002. She is survived by one daughter, Joyce Venable; one granddaughter, Johleesa Venable; one brother, George Hill; seven sisters, Bernice Batts, Georgia Campbell, Sally Alston, Sylvan and Mary Brake, Dorothy Privett and Gloria Daniel; one sister-in-law, two brothers-in-law, a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 19th and Hull Sts. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 3, 11 a.m. at the Northside Crusaders Baptist Church, 2901 Fourth Ave. Rev. John F. Tyler, pastor, officiating. Interment private. After 10 a.m. Tuesday, remains will rest in the above named church until hour of service. Relatives and friends attending funeral services, assemble at the church Tuesday, 10:30 a.m.
