Kathleen M. Hill

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- Kathleen Marie ``Kathi" Hill, 48, died Sunday, Aug. 29, 1999, at her residence.

Born May 18, 1951, in Portsmouth, she was the Electronics Department manager at K-Mart in Kill Devil Hills, an avid horticulturist and a Methodist. She was the daughter of Kenneth Marvin Williams of Suffolk, and Patricia Lou Grubbs Williams of Nags Head, N.C.

Besides her parents, Ms. Hill is survived by one daughter, Christie Lynn White of Virginia Beach; one son, Van Garrick Hill of Kill Devil Hills; one brother, Timothy C. Williams of Virginia Beach; a paternal grandmother, Audra Williams of Staunton, Va.; and a maternal grandmother, Lena V. Grubbs of Kitty Hawk, N.C.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m.p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 1999, at Colington United Methodist Church with the Rev. Robert Pitsch officiating. A committal service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements.

Nancy C. Jernigan

ASKEWVILLE -- Nancy Lee Clark Jernigan, 75, died Sept. 1, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Askewville Assembly of God. Walker Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.

Fannie B. Lewis

PENDLETON -- Fannie B. Lewis, 81, of Route 1, died Aug. 28, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today in Galilee Baptist Church, Branchville, Va. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Clifton R. Outlaw

WINDSOR -- Clifton R. Outlaw, 59, of the 1800 block of Indian Woods Road, died Aug. 30, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Indian Woods Baptist Church. Gilliam Funeral Home is in charge.

Geraldine J. Riggs

RALEIGH -- Geraldine J. Riggs, 85, died Sept. 2, 1999. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City.

Betty M. Spencer

HERTFORD -- Betty Mae Spencer, 66, of Route 5, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 1, 1999, in her home.

A native of Washington County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Alfred C. and Nancy A. Spruill Clifton, and the foster daughter of the late Leslie and Maxine Jefferson. She had worked as a supervisor/inspector with Southland Manufacturing in Norfolk and was a member of Calvary Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Survivors include her husband, Eugene Herbert Spencer Jr.; four daughters, Wanda S. Peters of Stockbridge, Ga., Juanita D. Caudill and Judith I. Gourley, both of Chesapeake, and Lattie M. DeWald of Hertford; two sisters, Geraldine J. Payne and Joan J. Goin; two brothers, Pernon C. Clifton and John E. Jefferson, all of Chesapeake; seven grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Swindell Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home chapel by the Revs. Noah Adams and Michael Gentilini. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery.

Jean F. Spruill

COMO -- Jean Flanagan Spruill, 61, of the 100 block of Ebo Road, died Sept. 2, 1999, at home.

Born in Halifax County, N.C., she was a supervisor for Perdue Poultry Co. and a member of Buckhorn Baptist Church, Como.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Whitley Spruill; a daughter, Virginia Rooker of Gaston, N.C.; three sons, John H. Phipps Jr. of Four Oaks, N.C., Ernest Dale Phipps of Courtland and Jimmy Phipps of Conway, N.C.; two stepsons, Gerald W. Spruill of Como and James Earl Spruill of Roanoke Rapids, N.C.; three sisters, Selma Cowart of Savannah, Ga., Retha Carter of Como and Rebecca Brown of Colerain; two brothers, Frank Flanagan of Ahoskie, A.B. Flanagan Jr. of Murfreesboro; and nine grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Buckhorn Baptist Church by the Rev. Larry Allen. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, N.C., is in charge. Memorial donations may be made to the Como Fire and Rescue Departments, Como, NC 27818, or to Roanoke Chowan Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910.

Marjorie N. Pearson

HARRISONBURG -- Marjorie Nicholas Pearson, 81, of the 100 block of Colonial Drive, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Avante at Harrisonburg. She had not enjoyed good health for the past several months.

A daughter of the late Hugh Cecil and Nell Thornton Nicholas, she was born on April 2, 1918, in Portsmouth, where she was reared and lived her early married life. She later made her home in New Cumberland, Pa., for 16 years, coming to Harrisonburg in November 1998.

Mrs. Pearson was a former member of Portsmouth Junior Women's Club and Portsmouth Christian Church. She was recently a member of Yocumtown Church of God, Yocumtown, Pa.

On Sept. 10, 1941, she married Richmond S. Pearson, who survives her. Also surviving are three children, John G. Pearson of Harrisonburg, Richard S. Pearson of Etters, Pa., and Jean P. Bew of New Cumberland, Pa.; and nine grandchildren. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Her body will be cremated at the Lindsey Cremation Chapel. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lindsey Harrisonburg Funeral Home with the Rev. Joe Slater officiating. Friends may call at the home of her son, John G. Pearson, 142 Lyndon Place in Harrisonburg, at any time.

Those desiring may make memorial contributions to Portsmouth Christian Church, Portsmouth, in her memory.

Thomas F. Carlisle

ONALASKA, Texas -- Thomas ``Tommy" Franklin Carlisle died from a prolonged illness on Saturday, Aug. 21, 1999, in Onalaska, his current home. He was born in Frogsgreen Saffron, England, May 22, 1945, to the late Durwood ``Joe" Ambrose Carlisle and the late Gladys Lillian Elizabeth Bach Carlisle.

He was raised in the South Norfolk borough of Chesapeake, where he attended Oscar F. Smith High School.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra Carlisle of Onalaska; daughters, Andrea Carlisle, Dana Gibbs and Morgan Rene Carlisle, all of Texas, and Saundra P. Carlisle Barlow of Gates, N.C.; two brothers, Michael Edwin Carlisle of Barco, N.C., and Charles Irving Carlisle of Portsmouth; and several nieces, nephews and grandchildren.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, 1999, at the Onalaska First Baptist Church in Texas with the Rev. Don Wilkey officiating. Cockran Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

John L. Deans

HARLEM, N.Y. -- John Lewis Deans, 57, died Aug. 26, 1999. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at First Baptist Church, Murfreesboro, N.C. Hunter's Funeral Home, Murfreesboro, is in charge.

Annie L. Debnam

LAND O LAKES, Fla. -- Annie L. Debnam, 91, formerly of Norfolk, died Aug. 29, 1999. Services will be private. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, is in charge.

John W. Gee Jr.

OSTEEN, Fla. -- John William Gee Jr. passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at the age of 81. Mr. Gee was a self-employed real estate broker.

Born in Victoria, Va., he moved to Osteen, Fla., in the late 1970s. He was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Victoria. He was a past member of the Moose Lodge in Norfolk.

John is survived by his longtime beloved companion, Shirley J. Umbarger of Osteen; daughters, Linda G. Seamster of Richmond and Janice Nelson of Norfolk; son, John W. Gee III of Virginia Beach; and eight grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Inurnment will follow at Reedy Creek Chapel, Lunenburg, Va. Baldauff Family Funeral Home, Orange City, Fla., is in charge.

Mary A. Pleau

NORWOOD, Mass. -- Mary Alfaretta Ross Pleau, 83, died Aug. 31, 1999. A funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Catherine's. Gillooly Funeral Home is in charge.

Robert Burnette Koontz

AURORA, Colo. -- Robert ``Bobby" B. Koontz, 36, died Aug. 27, 1999, at his home. He was a longtime resident of Virginia Beach, and a 1982 graduate of Princess Anne High School. Mr. Koontz was employed as a salesman.

Bobby is survived by his love, Christina, and children, Donald, Jeremiah, Anika, Christopher, Joshua, Breana, Robert Jr. and Faith Koontz. He will be greatly missed by his parents, Steve and Shelvia Koontz of Virginia Beach; brothers, Bill and Barry; sisters-in-law, Sibyl and Nicolle; four nephews and two nieces.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at London Bridge Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to an account for Faith, age 4 weeks, and Bobby Jr., age 1. Please contact Nicolle and Barry Koontz at 430-2316. The family will receive friends at 1124 Woodcock Lane in Virginia Beach. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, is in charge.

Russell E. Tucker IV

SEVERNA PARK, Md. -- Russell Evans Tucker IV, 48, a former resident of Norfolk, died Aug. 31, 1999. A funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Margarets Episcopal Church. Barranco & Sons, P.A., Severna Park Funeral Home is in charge.

Jesse D. Cook

CHESAPEAKE -- Jesse Donovan Cook, 5 months, of the 2100 block of C. Rocky Point Run, died Sept. 16, 1998, at the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters.

He was born in DePaul Medical Center, Norfolk, and was named after his grandmother, the late Jessie Mae Cook. He was a member of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, Chesapeake.

Jesse is survived by his parents, Melanie Waters-Cook and Paul Gregory Cook, both of Chesapeake; his 2-year-old brother, Jordan Gregory Cook, also of Chesapeake; maternal grandparents, Eldridge and LaVerne Waters Jr. of Newark, Del.; paternal grandparents, George W. Cook and Gracie Cook of Chesapeake; maternal great-grandparents, Eldridge and Nannie Waters Sr. of Wilmington; and a host of uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.

A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Roosevelt Memorial Cemetery, Chesapeake, by Dr. Donald F. Taylor, pastor of Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. today at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave. Family and friends will be at 401 Oak Lake Terrace, Chesapeake. After interment, the family will receive friends at Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church.

``Our love for you will last forever. You brought so much Joy to all of our lives. We love you. You're an angel in Heaven." Love Mommie, Daddy, Jordan and family.

Gwendolyn L. Morse

CHESAPEAKE -- Gwendolyn Latham ``Tent" Morse, 41, of the 2100 block of Campostella Road, died Sept. 14, 1998. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. today at St. Andrews, Norfolk. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.

Don C. Bearden

NORFOLK -- Don Curtis Bearden, 41, of Norfolk, died Sept. 6, 1998, in Jacksonville, Fla.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne; daughter, Danielle; son, Emanuel; sisters, Virginia, Melba, JoAnn, Rose and Carol; brothers, Carl and Wayne; and his mother, Mildred Marie of Norfolk.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at St. Andrew's-by-the-Sea Episcopal Church, 4212 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Nags Head, N.C. Duval County Cremation Society, Jacksonville, is in charge.
