Douglas Bethea

NORFOLK -- Douglas Bethea of the 3200 block of Vimy Ridge Ave. died Sept. 15, 1998.

Born in Edgecombe, N.C., to the late Rev. Curtis Bethea and Ruby McNair, he was a machinist with the Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He was a member of New Mount Olivet Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Board of Trustees, Male Chorus and the Men's Fellowship. Mr. Bethea faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army. He was also an active member of the Fairmont Park Civic League.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 10 years, Joycelyn Skinner Brown Bethea; a stepdaughter, Angela Brown; three stepsons, Thaddeus Graham, Andre' Graham and Jeffery Brown; three sisters, Nellie Mae Paige of Charlotte, N.C., Laverne Hudson of Atlanta, Ga., and Mildred Lloyd and her husband, Robert, of Rocky Mount, N.C.; a brother, Bobby Bethea; a very devoted father-in-law, Andrew Skinner; seven grandchildren, Jaquan, Shada', Monica, Thaddeus Jr., Keonte, Natha and Paradise; three aunts, Bessie Farr of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jessie Parker of Rocky Mount, N.C., and Lillie Styles of Jacksonville, N.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in New Mount Olivet Baptist Church, 1000 County St., Portsmouth, by the Rev. Milton Blount. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Riddick Funeral Service, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for a wake service. At other times, the family will receive friends at the residence. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the National Kidney Foundation.

Evelyn Wilson

NORFOLK -- Evelyn Wilson of the 1200 block of Pelham St., died Sept. 15, 1998, in a local hospital.

A native of Norfolk County, she attended Norfolk Public Schools. She was a homemaker and a faithful member of First Baptist Church, Logan Park, for over 30 years.

She is survived by her husband, Johnny T. Wilson; three sons, Charles, Shawn and Jeffrey Wilson, all of Norfolk; one sister, Vivian Wilkins of Norfolk; seven grandchildren, Deborah and Valerie Brewer and Laurie Boone, all of Chesapeake, Cynthia Whitehead and Sidney Brewer Jr., both of Norfolk, Pamela Bullock and Darryl Gatling of Virginia Beach; 11 great-grandchildren; seven nieces, Jessie Little of Norfolk, Vivian Sharpe of Georgia, Felicia Bloodworth of New York, Laura Warren and Anginoya Freeman, both of Chesapeake, Charlene Wilkins and Flodine Green; three nephews, Andre, Terry and Kevin, all of Norfolk; son-in-law, Sidney Brewer; and other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a daughter, Clara Brewer.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Logan Park, by the Rev. Roberts. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at 1212 Pelham St., Norfolk. The remains will lie in repose at noon at the church the day of the service. Metropolitan Funeral Service, Southside Chapel, Berkley Ave., is in charge.

James C. Brown

PORTSMOUTH -- James Clifton Brown, 69, departed Wednesday, Sept. 9, 1998, at Maryview Hospital.

Mr. Brown was born Oct. 12, 1930, to the late Walter Brown and Martha Jane Best Brown in Tarboro, N.C. He previously owned and worked at Brown's Variety in Philadelphia, Pa.

He is survived by a sister, Martha Brown of Portsmouth; a brother, James Russell Brown of Tarboro; a son, Chauncey Jones; a daughter, Mary Jackson; four grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren, all of Philadelphia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Alice Lacy.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Church. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery, Hampton. Serenity Funeral Home is in charge.

Thomas E. Kretzer Sr.

PORTSMOUTH -- Thomas Edward Kretzer Sr., 70, of Chatham Road, died Thursday, Sept. 17, 1998.

Mr. Kretzer was a member of Westhaven Church of God and the Deep Creek Knights of Pythians and a native of Van Lear, Ky. He retired as an electrician at Norfolk Naval Air Station and was an Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Kretzer is survived by his wife, Delores Kretzer; a daughter, Sue Bunting of Detroit, Mich.; four sons, Thomas E. Kretzer Jr. of Atlanta, Ga., Ernest Wilhelm Kretzer of Virginia Beach, Gregory Frederick Kretzer of Chester and Jeffrey Frank Kretzer of Portsmouth; five stepchildren, Kathy Glenn of Virginia Beach, Julie Gingras of Newport News, Charles Bond of Nevada, Iowa, Jerry Bond of Wheelersburg, Ohio, and Victor Bond of Virginia Beach; eight sisters, Kathleen Bellomy of Portsmouth, Delores Louise Justice of Grayson, Ky., Vivian Ross and Doris Friar, both of Chesapeake, Dora Darden of Suffolk, Rose Mary Norton of Conyers, Ga., Barbara Hendley of Huntsville, Ala., and Gladys Bloodworth of McDough, Ga.; two brothers, Harold Kretzer Sr. of Portsmouth and Clifford Kretzer of Chesapeake; 22 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in Westhaven Church of God by Pastor Frank Allen and the Rev. Carroll Hurley. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m todayin Loving Funeral Home. Mr. Kretzer will be sent to Henderson-Oney Funeral Home in Olive Hill, Ky., for burial in Carter Co. Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Lorri M. Moore

PORTSMOUTH -- Lorri Michelle Moore, 29, of Royal Street, died Sept. 16, 1998, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Born in Portsmouth, to Margaret B. Moore and Aaron Moore Sr. of Portsmouth, she was a cosmetologist.

Besides her parents, she is survived by her sister, Phyllis M. and her husband, Wayne Brown, of Ivor; three brothers, Aaron and his wife, Mary Moore Jr., Eric Moore, all of Portsmouth, and John K. and his wife, Velma Moore, of Chesapeake; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Viewing will begin at noon today at the funeral home.

James L. Parker

PORTSMOUTH -- James L. ``Jim" Parker, 62, of the 1400 block of Gorton Ct., died Sept. 16, 1998, in Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, Portsmouth.

Born in Rocky Mount, N.C., he was a SFC U.S. Army veteran and retired after 20 years. He also was the security supervisor for Allstate Security Co. with 20 years of service.

Survivors include his wife, Hannah L. Parker; four daughters, Tina Jean Smith and Deborah Ann Shephard, both of Decatur, Ga., Jamie Lee Williams of Portsmouth and Mattie Lee Neal of Andrews, N.C.; six sisters; five brothers; 10 grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Kim Brown. Burial with military honors will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Viewing at the funeral home will begin at noon today.

Joseph A. Wiggins

PORTSMOUTH -- Joseph Andrea Wiggins of the 3700 block of Pinebark Road, died Sept. 13, 1998, in a local hospital.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Latanya, and daughter, Jamia; his mother, Beverly Bonner of Portsmouth; father, Joe Wiggins; two sisters, Kia Bonner and Sharon Wiggins; two brothers, Dion and Darrell Wiggins, all of Maryland; and grandmother, Lee Chatman of Norfolk.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Jerusalem Baptist Church by the Rev. H. Carlyle Church. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Graves Funeral Home is in charge.

Deloris Mae Woodard

PORTSMOUTH -- Deloris Mae Woodard, 62, of the 3000 block of Barclay Ave., died Sept. 16, 1998. A funeral will be at noon Saturday in Fisher Funeral Home.

John L. Dimmock Sr.

VIRGINIA BEACH -- John Leo Dimmock Sr., 71, died Sept. 13, 1998, in Seattle, Wash., while residing with his children.

He was born Oct. 7, 1927, in Boston, Mass., to Margaret Kennedy and Walter G. Dimmock. John enlisted in the Navy in March 1945 and proudly served until his retirement in 1966 as a senior fire control technician. He then continued his career with civil service. John was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Branch No. 99, and the American Legion Post No. 60.

He was widowed from his wife, Dawna Dimmock, on Sept. 4, 1997. John is survived by his daughter, Charlene Peterson, retired U.S. Army; a son, John Leo Dimmock Jr., a merchant mariner; grandchildren, Savannah and Jordan; four sisters, Jeanne McCormick, Ernestine Worth, Margaret Rehill and Virginia Pesoretti, all of Massachusetts; and a brother, Walter G. Dimmock of Oregon.

A graveside service with full military honors will be conducted at noon Saturday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by CDR B.L. Kingwood, CHC, USN, retired. The Fleet Reserve Association will honor their fallen shipmate at 7 p.m. today at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel. The family will also receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Sylvia R. Ford

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sylvia R. Ford, 51, of the 5300 block of Hargrove Blvd., died Sept. 17, 1998, in Chesapeake.

She was a flight attendant with U.S. Air.

Survivors include her husband, James E. Ford; two daughters, Elizabeth L. Ford and Amy M. Ford; her mother-in-law, Robbie L. Ford, all of Virginia Beach; her parents, Elmer and Grace Rehme of Cincinnati, Ohio; five sisters, Marci Kuhlman of Rock Spring, Wyo., Valerie Seltz of Brussels, Belgium, Bonnie Sullivan of Charleston, S.C., Deanna Condon of Kiawah Island, S.C., and Kim Rahe of Chicago.

A memorial service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Eastminister Presbyterian Church, 3229 MacDonald Road, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice. Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Charles E. Mullins

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Charles Eddy ``Chuck" Mullins, 55, of the 5700 block of Normandy Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 16, 1998, in a local hospital.

Mr. Mullins was born in Norfolk. He retired from the City of Norfolk after 13 years of service as a fleet mechanic.

He was a loving and giving husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Leslie Jo., and father, Burton Ivan; three sons, Eddy Michael, Kevin Daniel and his wife, Marsha, Charles Eddy Jr. and his wife, Maria; two grandsons, Kevin Jr. and Markus; extended family members, Bettie Jean Maxwell, Malcolm Frazier, Patti Miller, Milyn and Leonard Midgette and family, Ike and Vickie Miller and family.

A memorial service will be conducted at St. Andrew's United Methodist Church, 717 Tucson Road, Virginia Beach, at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19, by Pastor Danny J. Kesner. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Andrew's United Methodist Church. Altmeyer Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Helen T. Ruley

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Helen Tucker Ruley, 97, died Sept. 17, 1998, in Virginia Beach.

She was born in Portsmouth and was a member of Zion Grace United Methodist Church.

The widow of Malcolm Ruley, she is survived by two sisters, Mildred Tucker Stanard of San Antonio, Texas, and Evelyn Tucker Cox of Norfolk.

Memorial donations may be made to Zion Grace United Methodist Church, 1440 W. Little Creek Road, Norfolk, Va. 23505. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Barbara Shepard

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Barbara Shepard, 42, of the 1200 block of Green Cedar Lane, died Sept. 12, 1998. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church. P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services is in charge.
