Napoleon C. Alston

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Napoleon C. Alston of the 5700 block of Colter Court died Sept. 14, 2001. He was born in Henderson, N.C., and retired from York Town Weapon Station.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce Alston of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Lula Alston of Norfolk; a son, Herman Alston of Ohio; three sisters, Rosa Hicks, Shirley Kellem and Carrie Hargraves, all of New Jersey; two brothers, Charlie Alston and Odell Alston, both of New Jersey; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in Community Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Dr. Mary Clemson. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park.

Mary E. Barnes

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Mary Eubank ``Bloody Mary" Barnes, 79, died Sept. 15, 2001, at her residence.

She was born in Old Church, Hanover County, Va., and was the widow of J. Hugh Barnes. She retired as a teacher from Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach after 25 years of service. She also retired as an administrator from Virginia Beach public schools after 16 years of service.

She was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, past president of the Virginia Association of Teachers of English, and member of National Council of Teachers of English. She received a bachelors degree from the University of Richmond and Masters of English from Old Dominion University. She was Phi Beta Kappa, and an adjunct professor for the College of William and Mary.

Survivors include a sister, Doris McCaughan of Richmond; two nephews, Steven D. McCaughan of Louisa County, Va., and Denny McCaughan of Mason, Ohio; and several great-nephews, nieces and cousins.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hampton Roads Chapter, No. 20 Koger Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502.

Holly Lynn Atkins

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Holly Lynn Atkins, 12, died Sept. 16, 2001. Holly was in the 7th grade at Princess Anne Middle School. She enjoyed spending time with her friends.

She was predeceased by her paternal grandfather, Ronald Lee Atkins.

She is survived by her mother, Angela Marie Atkins of Virginia Beach; father, Curtis Alan Atkins of Miami, Fla.; stepfather, William Neal Nosay Sr. of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Ashley Michelle Atkins and Tiffany ALora Atkins, both of Virginia Beach; brother, Tyler Chad Pittman of Portsmouth; two stepbrothers, William Neal Nosay Jr. and Wesley Travis Nosay, both of Suffolk; four uncles, Richard Canady, Lonnie Canady, Robert Canady and Bill Canady; two aunts, Melissa Canady and Melody Canady; paternal grandmother, Janie Bell Atkins of Chesapeake; maternal grandparents, Bonnie Ammann of Norfolk and William Canady of Portsmouth; her stepgrandfather, Mike Ammann of Norfolk; four cousins, Michael Canady and Nathan Canady, Kevin Wayne Atkins Jr. and Krystal Leigh Atkins; her best friends, CJ, Stephanie, Kayla; and a host of other friends.

The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home. A graveside service will be held Thursday at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens at 1 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, 601 Children's Lane, Norfolk, VA 23507.

Bettie Mae Krahenbill

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Bettie Mae Krahenbill, 94, of the 300 block of Lynn Shores Drive, died Sept. 16, 2001, in a local nursing home.

She was born in Vaughan, N.C., and was the widow of her first husband, Paul O. Taylor, and her second husband, Leonard T. Krahenbill. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include a daughter, Sally T. Brinkley-Licari of Virginia Beach; a son, Harold L. Krahenbill and his wife Barbara of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Mark and Jason Krahenbill, and Kimberly Staley; and two great-grandchildren, Ashley and Hollie Smith. She was predeceased by a granddaughter, Susan Smith.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens by Dr. Paul C. Lawson. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Kempsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 62345, Virginia Beach, VA 23466. After the service, the family will greet friends at the Hospitality Room at Woodlawn Funeral Home.

Immacolata G. Meikle

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Immacolata M. Garofalo ``Tina" Meikle, 73, passed away Sept. 15, 2001 in Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital. She was a native of Naples, Italy and had lived in Virginia Beach the past 25 years, and was the beloved wife of Harry R. Meikle.

Tina was a Catholic and a very active member for 25 years of the Sons of Italy Roma Lodge No. 254.

In addition to her beloved husband, Harry, she is survived by one son, Harry Arthur Meikle and his wife, Joanne, of Virginia Beach; one daughter, Tina Maria O'Gorman and her husband, Gregory, of Virginia Beach; one brother, Ciro Garofalo of France; and two grandchildren, Jessica Lee Meikle and Jeremy Arthur Meikle, both of Virginia Beach.

The family will receive friends in Kellum Funeral Home, Bonney Road, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. A funeral will be conducted in the funeral home at noon Wednesday by Father John-Mary Tompkins, O.S.B. Entombment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. A reception will be held in her residence after the services.

Michael A. Myers

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Michael A. Myers, 44, passed away Friday evening, Sept. 14, 2001, in a hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Survivors include his wife, Cynthia Probert Myers; a 1-year-old son, Nicolas Clay Myers of Virginia Beach; parents, Bob and Lillian Myers of Venus, Fla.; sister, Shirley Preisler and nieces, Danielle Lyons, Lauren Preisler and nephew, Steven Preisler of Baldwin, Md.; brother, Bob Myers and niece, Caroline Myers of New Jersey; mother-in-law, Nancy Probert; sister-in-law, Deborah Lynn Porter and husband John Joseph Porter and nephew, John Michael Porter of Virginia Beach.

Michael, a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, fought in Desert Storm and had been awarded several accommodations throughout his career. After retirement, Michael was employed by the United States Postal Service.

Michael was a wonderful father who enjoyed working in his vegetable garden and camping with dear friends, Barry and Jan Duncan of North Carolina. Michael and his family spent many seasons enjoying the Washington Redskins and Rusty Wallace of NASCAR racing. He was a well-rounded sports ``watcher" as well as player. His whole family will miss his cooking expertise.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Johnson's Funeral Home, 8521 Lochraven Blvd., Baltimore, Md. A local memorial service will be held at Baylake United Methodist Church, Shore Drive, Virginia Beach, Sunday, Sept. 23 at 4 p.m. His wife and son have requested that donations be made to the American Cancer Society to further research.

Michael Myers will truly be missed by many across the country. We know that he will live on in our hearts and through his son.

Ronald W. Phelps

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Ronald Wesley Phelps, 68, of Loflin Way, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Chesapeake Health Care Center following an extended illness.

Born in Washington County, he was the son of the late Samuel E. and Ida Furlough Phelps. Mr. Phelps was a retired quality assurance inspector at Fort Story, a U.S. Air Force veteran, served 35 years in the Naval Reserve and was a member of Laurel Avenue Church of Christ.

His family included his former wife, Lillian Miller of Chesapeake; son, Brian Phelps; stepson, Steven Cutler of Smyrna, Ga.; stepdaughters, Cynthia Kretchner and Sheryl Wise of Chesapeake; brother, Samuel Phelps of Plymouth, N.C.; sisters, Myra Spivey of Virginia Beach, Wenona Maloney of Plymouth, N.C., and Josephine Spruill of Norfolk; and seven grandchildren.

Graveside funeral services will be held today at 2 p.m. in the Philippi Church of Christ Cemetery, Creswell, by Mr. Dave Watts. Arrangements by Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell.

William J. Walsh

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William Joseph Walsh, 59, died in his home on Friday, Sept. 14, 2001.

Born in Pennsylvania to the late William G. and Helen Noon Walsh, he retired as a chief from the U.S. Navy after serving 27 years and since November 1988 was the maintenance supervisor at Virginia Beach United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Connee Petta Walsh; a daughter, Pamela Johnston and husband Timothy and their children, Skylar, Anne and Sydney Anne of Virginia Beach; a son, William J. Walsh Jr. and wife Traci M. and their children, Dustin L., Hallie R., and Joseph G. of North Carolina; sisters and brothers, Richard J. and Robert L. Walsh, Rose Harmon, Elizabeth Milanek and Mark A. Walsh.

A Mass service will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. in Virginia Beach United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the church building fund in memory of Bill Walsh, 212 19th St., Virginia Beach, VA 23451.

Catherine W. Holland

SUFFOLK -- Catherine Walker Holland, 83, of the 1400 block of Lipton Circle, died Sept. 13, 2001.

A native of Fredericksburg, Va., she worked for the Little Shop, then was a sales clerk for Montgomery Ward and later a homemaker. Mrs. Holland was a member of First Baptist Church for 74 years, where she attended the Eunice Sunday School Class. She was also a member of the Susan Stokeld Mission Circle and Senior Citizen Group of First Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late William Herman Walker Sr. and Alice Cox Walker. She was also predeceased by a sister, Elizabeth Rawles and two brothers, William H. Walker Jr. and Howard T. Walker.

The widow of David A. Holland, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Lloyd Gatling of Suffolk; grandson, Richard Lloyd Gatling of Suffolk; sisters-in-law, Belva S. Walker of Suffolk, Betsy B. Walker of Durwood, Md., and Ida Holland of Portsmouth; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Gillette and Russell Cobb of Suffolk and Howard and Omalee Holland of Alexandria, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral was held Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by Dr. David Chauncey. Interment was at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Friends joined the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the residence of Judy and Lloyd Gatling at 324 Sussex Court, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Robert A. Jeffreys

SUFFOLK -- Robert Allen Jeffreys, 12, of the 200 block of Nansemond Ave., died Sept. 16, 2001, in Danville, Va.

Born in Suffolk, he was a student at John F. Kennedy Middle School and a member of Suffolk Christian Church, where he was active with the 6th Grade Sunday School class, and member of Southside Baptist Youth Group. He excelled in baseball while playing with the Suffolk Youth Athletic Association and the Bennetts Creek Little League. He was also a member of the American Motorcyclist Association District 13. He received the Presidential Scholarship Award and the Good Citizenship Award while attending Mack Benn Elementary School. Robert was a wonderful little boy full of life who never met a stranger. He is now with the Lord. We love you, miss you, but will be together again. God bless you.

Survivors include his parents, BeLinda Parr and William Wallace Jeffreys; sister, Ora Nicole Jeffreys; maternal grandmother, Dorothy Kelly ``Sue" Parr, all of Suffolk; aunts and uncles, Steven M. and Lisa Jeffreys, Robert J. Parr Jr. and Linda M. Parr, John W. and Darlene H. Parr, Kelly D. Parr, Frank J. Parr Sr., Kathleen B. Parr, Charles D. Parr Sr. and Kim W. Parr; and cousins, Matthew and Garrett Jeffreys, Michella, Rocky, Nick, Jacob, Frankie J., Philip, Katherine, Douglas, Bracey and Margaret Parr.

A Celebration of Life will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church, N. Main Street, by the Rev. Michael D. Halley, Dr. David H. Chauncey, and the Rev. Stewart McCarter. Family will receive friends following the service in the Suffolk Christian Church Fellowship Hall. Interment will be private. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8 p.m. at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home and other times at the residence.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the First Baptist Christian School, Robert Allen Jeffreys Memorial Fund, 237 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA 23434.

Margaret M. Beshak

ACCOMAC -- Margaret Irene Makuta Beshak, 82, died Sept. 16, 2001. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Peter's Catholic Church, Onley. Williams-Onancock Funeral Home is in charge.

Howard Lee Gardner

CHINCOTEAGUE -- Howard Lee ``Jawbone" Gardner, 83, died Sept. 17, 2001. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Belle Haven Cemetery. Doughty Funeral Home, Exmore, is in charge.

James Thompson III

CHINCOTEAGUE -- James Thompson III, 69, died Sept. 15, 2001. A memorial service was held at 7 p.m. Monday at Fox and Holston Funeral Home.

Angelo C. Fusco

KITTY HAWK -- Angelo Cortez Fusco, 94, died Sept. 17, 2001. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge.

Willie L. Moore

PLYMOUTH -- Willie L. Moore, 77, of the 200 block of E. Third St., died Sept. 14, 2001. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Second Zion Grove Baptist Church, Plymouth. Puckett-Purkett Memorial Chapel, Roper, is in charge.
