Sallie P. Cherry
Sallie Poindexter Cherry, 85, of 300 Blue Ride Rehab Center, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at the center.
She was born on Aug. 12, 1919, in Virginia to Rose Poindexter.
She had been a domestic worker for the Sherwood family. She was a member of Shiloh Way of the Cross Church, the adult choir and Missionary Circle.
There are no immediate survivors. Bishop Earley Dillard of Martinsville was her guardian.
The funeral will be held at 6 p.m. today at Shiloh Way of the Cross Church with Bishop Earley Dillard officiating. Burial will be at noon Monday in Carver Memorial Gardens.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Melvin D. Dandridge Sr.
Melvin Douglas Dandridge Sr., 61, of 262 D & J Park Dr., Axton died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004 at Memorial Hospital.
He was born June 23, 1943, in Henry County to Willie Dandridge and Lena Tatum Dandridge. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Melvin D. Dandridge Jr.; and two brothers, James Dandridge and Claude Lee Dandridge.
He retired from the V.A. Medical Center. He was an Air Force veteran of the Vietname War. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as head deacon and a pastorŐs aide.
Surviving are his wife, Viola W. Dandridge of the home; three daughters, Deborah Clark and Melva Dandridge, both of Axton, and Melvina Hairston of Collinsville; three sisters, Mattie Ferrell and Thelma Carson, both of Martinsville and Esther Gibson of Fieldale; and five grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Pentecostal Assembly Building with Dr. Roger Hagwood officiating. Burial will be in Rock Hill Baptist Church cemetery in Bassett.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the Pentecostal Assembly Building and other times at the home.
Hines Funeral Services is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruby H. Ferguson
SANDY RIDGE, N.C. -- Ruby Hennis Ferguson, 94, of 2487 Amos Town Road, Sandy Ridge, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at her home.
She was born in Stokes County on April 18, 1910, to Eggbert Hennis and Jenny Amos Hennis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Ferguson; two sons, Henry Junior Ferguson and Harold Wayne Ferguson; a grandchild, Debra Sue Ferguson; a great-grandchild, John Treavor Cox; three sisters, Alma Martin, Sadie Amos and Edith Kallam; and two brothers, Garland Hennis and Hassell Hennis.
Surviving are two sons, Cleo Ferguson and Donnie Ferguson, both of Sandy Ridge; a daughter, Frances Miles of Spencer, Va.; two sisters, Bessie Pratt and Doris Shelton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Marty Brim will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Sandy Ridge Presbyterian Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Cleo Ferguson, 1553 N.C. Hwy. 770, Sandy Ridge, N.C. 27046, or to Hospice of Stokes County, P.O. Box 10, Danbury, N.C. 27016.

Lelia H. Franklin
Lelia Hollandsworth Franklin, 95, of Pinewood Lane, Bassett, died Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004, at Stanleytown Health Care Center in Bassett.
She was born on July 21, 1909, in Bassett to Johnny H. Hollandsworth and Eula Via Hollandsworth. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Lee Franklin, and three sisters, Thelma H. Hancock, Virginia H. Franklin and Ivadell Hollandsworth.
She retired from Bassett Walker Knitting Co. with 25 years of service. She had been a member of Blackberry Baptist Church for more than 80 years.
Surviving are three sons, Douglas Marshall Franklin of Burlington, N.C., Harold E. Franklin of Bassett and Leon Franklin of Titusville, Fla.; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Blackberry Baptist Church. Drs. G.H. Vaughan and Joey McNeill will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at Collins Funeral chapel and other times at the home of Harold and Agnes Franklin, 3794 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett.
Memorials may be made to the Blackberry Baptist Church Building Fund, 3241 Stones Dairy Road, Bassett, Va. 24055.

Grace Grant
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Grace Grant died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004.
She was born in Hampton, S.C., to Clara S. Grant and Lonnie Grant, deceased. She was a member of Spring Branch Baptist Church in Pamplico.
Surviving in addition to her mother are a son, Lonnie Grant; four brothers, Lonnie Grant Jr. of Loris, Willie Grant Jr., Thomas Grant and Eugene Grant, all of Martinsville and two sisters, Mattie L. Grant of Florence and Clara Grant of Bishopville.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Savannah Grove Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Sunset Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at 600 Norfolk St., Florence.
Peoples Funeral Service in Florence is in charge of arrangements. Local arrangements are by Hairston Funeral Home.

Dr. Edward J. Helbing Jr.
HOLLAND, Mich. -- Dr. Edward J. Helbing Jr., 73, of Holland, Mich., died Friday, Oct. 22, 2004, at his home.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Lucille Van Domelen Helbing, in 1991, and a son, Edward J. Helbing III.
He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and attended Northwestern University Medical School where he received his medical degree. He was a fifth generation physician. He started his private general surgery practice in 1964 and was plant physician for General Electric until 1990. He was a diplomate with American Board of Surgery and a fellow with the American College of Surgeons.
He served as a captain with the Army Medical Corps.
He was a member of Christ Memorial Church. He held membership in the Century Club and Professional Club, the Castle Park Association, the Holland Country Club and the Republican party.
Surviving are his wife, Crystal Gravely Helbing of the home and formerly of Martinsville; three daughters, Sarah Medjaouri of Houston, Texas, Anne Sagastume of Western Springs, Ill., and Molly Sherwood of Grand Rapids; two step-sons, H. Clay Gravely of Martinsville and Glynn C. Gravely of Holland; and a sister, Kathy Zaloudek of Wash.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Memorial Church, 595 Graafschap Road, Holland. The Rev. Michael Pitsenberger will officiate. Burial will be in Paducah, Ky.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Monday at the Notier-Ver Lee-Langeland Funeral chapel, 315 E. 16th St., Holland.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wildcat Fund of Northwestern University of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Holland.

Susie W. Hobson
Susie Warren Hobson, 87, of 300 Blue Ridge St., Martinsville, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at the center. She was born June 18, 1919, in Franklin County to Benjamin Harrison Hobson and Lottie Gravely Hobson.
She was a former member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Bluefield, W.Va. She was a member of the Senior Missionary Society, the Senior Serving Circle and served on the kitchen committee.
Surviving are two sons, Harold Hobson Jr. of Richmond and Claude Hobson of Martinsville; two brothers, Zeke Warren of Willingboro, N.J., and Gilmore Warren of Rocky Mount; two sisters, Alice McIntosh and Elder Irene Hunt, both of Martinsville.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 114 Bedford St., Bluefield, W.Va. The Rev. James J. Palmer III will officiate. Burial will be in the New Design Church cemetery in Rocky Mount.
The family will receive friends for an hour before the service at the church.
Hairston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
