Alvah L. Cuthriell

CHESAPEAKE -- Alvah L. Cuthriell, 65, went to be with the Lord Sept. 11, 1998, at his residence.

Born in Chesapeake, he began his career with the Deep Creek Fire Department and was retired from Norfolk Naval Base as a fire chief after 27 years of service. He was a lifetime member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, a Gideon and a member of Lake Drummond Masonic Lodge, Chesapeake. He also was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and he received the Meritorious Civilian Service Award and Superior Civilian Service Award from the Department of the Navy.

He is survived by his wife, Patricia D. Cuthriell; a daughter, Cynthia C. Schippell and her husband, Karl, of Norfolk; a son, Daniel L. Cuthriell and his wife, Deborah, of Durham, N.C.; a sister, Barbara C. Pryor and her husband, Donald, of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Jonathan Cuthriell, Rose Ellen Schippell and Karla D. Schippell; and numerous relatives and loved ones.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Deep Creek Baptist Church by the Rev. Ernie Myers. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will be at Snellings Funeral Home, George Washington Highway Chapel, today from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Deep Creek Baptist Church Building Fund.

Gloria D. Hanbury

CHESAPEAKE -- Gloria Dickerson Hanbury, 58, of the 4100 block of Dock Landing Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sept. 10, 1998, in a Portsmouth hospital.

A native of Washington, D.C., she was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Joseph S. Hanbury Jr.; a daughter, Valerie Hanbury Burkett of Portsmouth; a son, Paul W. Hanbury of Chesapeake; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Faith Baptist Church by the Rev. Carlton Smith. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Memorial donations may be made to Faith Baptist Church.

John M. Rawls Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- John Murril Rawls Sr., 70, of the 1000 block of Washington Drive, died Sept. 10, 1998, at his residence.

Born in Williamston, N.C., he was a retired carpenter from City Roofing Construction Co. and a U.S. Army veteran of Korea.

He is survived by his wife, Addie Nielson Rawls; three daughters, Janie Rawls Deaver and Deborah Rawls Whitehead, both of Virginia Beach, and Johanna Rawls Simmons of Chesapeake; four sons, J. Murril Rawls Jr., David A. Rawls, Richard L. Rawls and W. ``Timmy" Rawls Sr., all of Chesapeake; two sisters, Mary Barco of Jackson, N.C., and Norma Visaya of Fremont, Calif.; one brother, Leroy Rawls of Gates County, N.C.; 14 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. He was predeceased by a sister, Gertie Alston.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m.

Cecil E. Davis

PORTSMOUTH -- Cecil Earl Davis, 77, of the 2nd block of S. Fairview Circle, died Sept. 10, 1998, in Chesapeake.

A native of Toms Creek, Wise County, Va., he was the widower of Ruby Juanita Davis, a retired crane operator from Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a Baptist.

Survivors include his mother, Ida B. Edwards Davis of Wise County; a daughter, Carol Davis Curling and husband, C.S.; a son, Ronald E. Davis and wife, Marie, all of Chesapeake; two brothers, Hoyt Davis of Wise County and Hershel Davis of Coeburn, Va.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Greenlawn Mausoleum Chapel by the Rev. Pete Taylor. Entombment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Mausoleum. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and other times at 3516 Parr Lane, Chesapeake. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association.

Melvin H. Parker

PORTSMOUTH -- Melvin Hinton Parker, 75, of Bainbridge Ave., died Sept. 10, 1998, at a Portsmouth hospital.

Born in Ahoskie, N.C., a son of the late John Henry Parker and the late Addie Savage Parker. He was a retired state inspector at High St. Amoco Station and a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, Portsmouth Moose Lodge No. 898, where he received the Fellowship Degree, and the Sunshine Club at Temple Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Burkholder Parker; a daughter, Carolyn Parker Wyatt of Portsmouth; two stepdaughters, Karen B. White of Hertford, N.C., and Cindy B. Chaney of Roxboro, N.C.; a stepson, Tim Burkholder of Atlanta, Ga.; a sister, Dorothy Irwin of Chesapeake; two brothers, Gordon ``Red" Parker and Jerry Parker, both of Driver, Va.; two grandchildren, Amber and Josh Wyatt; eight stepgrandchildren, Brian and Eric White, Christyn and Jason Burkholder, Brandon Chaney, Erin and Melissa Petefish, Amber P. Critcher; two great-grandchildren, Brent White and Haley Critcher; and his cat, ``Pumpkin." He was preceded in death by a son, David Lee Parker; and a stepson, Larry E. Burkholder.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Moose Rites by the Rev. John M. Brackin III and the Rev. William E. Kube. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Broad Street United Methodist Church or to a charity of the sender's choice.

Carrie C. Watson

PORTSMOUTH -- Carrie Campbell Watson, 79, of the 2200 block of Pearl St., died Sept. 9, 1998. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Emanuel A.M.E. Church. Corprew Funeral Home is in charge.

Clementine McNair

NORFOLK -- Clementine McNair of the 2700 block of Lens Ave., died Sept. 10, 1998, at her residence.

A native of Fairmont, N.C., she was employed at the Chrysler Museum and was a member of Calvary Revival Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Ann Sumter of Prospect Park, N.J., and Thomina McNair of Norfolk; a son, Gregory McNair of Seattle, Wash.; four sisters, Florence Richardson and Cliffe Mae, both of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mamie Weldon of Jersey City and Cender Ree of California; a brother, Clifford Giles of Winston-Salem; four grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Monday at Calvary Revival Church by the Rev. B. Courtney McBath. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The remains will be ready for viewing Sunday at 3:30 p.m. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at 2720 Lens Ave. at 11 a.m. for the procession. Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Dewey E. Ten Eyck
NORFOLK -- Dewey Eugene Ten Eyck, 77, of Beechwood Ave., died Sept. 9, 1998, in a local hospital. A native of Alma, Kan., Mr. Ten Eyck was the widower of Katherine D. Ten Eyck. He had retired from the U.S. Navy after 22 years of service. Mr. Ten Eyck was a member of Marshall Hunt Club of Suffolk. Survivors include a son, John T. Ten Eyck of Virginia Beach; his mother, Amanda Ten Eyck; a sister; six brothers; and one granddaughter, Holly Ten Eyck of Currituck, N.C. A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 1998, at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel, by the Rev. Samuel D. Austin of Glenwood Park Presbyterian Church. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Cemetery with military honors. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home.

David I. Vernik

NORFOLK -- David I. Vernik, 69, of the 100 block of Suburban Parkway, died Sept. 10, 1998. A graveside service will be at 2:45 p.m. Sunday at Forest Lawn Cemetery. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is in charge.

Nannie P. White

NORFOLK -- Nannie Payne White, 89, of the 2500 block of Grandy Ave., died in a local hospital on Sept. 11, 1998.

Mrs. White was born in Portsmouth and was the widow of James Howard White and was a homemaker. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Norfolk.

Survivors include her daughter, Barbara W. McCabe and husband, Robert, of Virginia Beach; two grandsons, Howard R. McCabe of Norfolk and Douglas M. McCabe of Virginia Beach; one granddaughter, Tracey M. Jensen of Maryland; and three great-grandchildren, Andrew, Cory and Nichole.

A graveside service will be conducted on Monday at 11 a.m. in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Ralph A. Stalter.

Friends may join the family at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, for viewing and visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Ervin M. Williams

NORFOLK -- Ervin McQuire Williams, 73, of the 100 block of Suburban Parkway, passed away Sept. 10, 1998, in Virginia Beach General Hospital.

He was a native of Norfolk County and a retired stockman at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center after 30 years of loyal service.

Mr. Williams was a member of St. Thomas AME Zion Church, where he was a former member of the Men's Choir.

Mr. Williams is survived by his wife, Margaret H. Williams; two sons, George B. Williams and his wife, Melvina M. Williams, of Norfolk, and Leon Williams and his wife, Kathy Williams, of Chesapeake; one daughter, Rosetta E. Hinton and her husband, Frederick A. Hinton, of Norfolk; two sisters, Celeste Ballard and Evelyn Figgs, both of Norfolk; one brother, Russell Williams of Norfolk; four grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted Monday at noon in St. Thomas AME Zion Church by Dr. G.L. Scott. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing will be Sunday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The family will receive friends at 635 W. 37th St. in Norfolk.

William T. Carr

VIRGINIA BEACH -- William Thomas ``Bill" Carr, 26, of the 5300 block of Nelson Court, died Sept. 10, 1998. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel.

Myrtle H. Pepper

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Myrtle Harris Pepper, 86, passed away Thursday in a local hospital.

She was born in Perquimans County, N.C., and was a member of Kempsville Church of Christ, where she attended the Adult Sunday School Class.

Survivors include two daughters, Joan Pepper Ringer and her husband, Norman, of Salisbury, Md., and Jane Pepper Cooley of Virginia Beach; a son, John Samuel Hughes and his wife, Carol, of Arroyo Grande, Calif.; two sisters, Margaret Falconer of Toccoa, Ga., and Pencie V. Early of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, Craig Ringer, Michael Ringer, Daniel Ringer, Matthew Cooley, Joseph Cooley, John Wilson, Amy Snivley, and Margaret Cromsigt; nine great-grandchildren; and a loving extended family.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Kempsville Church of Christ by the Rev. Randy Childress. Interment will follow at Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements.

Maxine C. Davis

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Maxine C. ``Mac-Moma" Davis, 85, of the 1000 block of Bennington Road, died Sept. 10, 1998, in Virginia Beach.

Born in Bessie Mines, Ala., she was the widow of Cecil Avery Canant and a Baptist.

Survivors include one daughter, Candace Brado of Chula Vista, Calif.; two sons, John Frank Canant and his wife, Penny Canant, of Virginia Beach and Ken Andrews of Chesapeake; two sisters, Marie Wood of Birmingham, Ala., and Frances Saltz of New York; two grandchildren, Joe Canant and Leslie Canant, both of Chesapeake; two great-grandchildren, Marina Canant and Megan Maeang; special nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Ann Sadler.

All services will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Beth Shalom Nursing Home or one's favorite charity. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Indian River Chapel, is in charge.

Lewis Barnes

COURTLAND -- Lewis Barnes of the 21400 block of Indian Wood Trail, died Sept. 10, 1998.

A native of Southampton County, Va., he was retired from the State Highway Department. He was a member of Bryant Baptist Church, Courtland, chairman of the Deacon Board and superintendent of the Sunday School. He also was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 183, Courtland, Good Samaritans and the Odd Fellows.

He is survived by his wife, Roxie W. Barnes of Courtland; two daughters, Viola Barnes and Rhea M. Barnes, both of Rocky Mount, N.C.; four sons, Elmer L. Barnes of Rocky Mount, the Rev. Elisha Barnes of Branchville, Va., Rogers Lee Barnes of Columbia, Md., and Joseph ``Scott" Barnes of Richmond, Va.; three sisters, Beatrice Lamison of Suffolk and Wonza Westbrook of Capron, Va., and Ater DeBerry of Richmond; two brothers, Steward Barnes of Capron and Herman Barnes of Courtland; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bryant Baptist Church, Courtland, by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in Bryant Church Cemetery. The remains will be placed in the church at noon for viewing. William M. Johnson and Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harold L. Chambers Sr.

WAVERLY -- Harold Lane Chambers Sr., 78, a retired farmer, died Sept. 11, 1998. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Purviance Funeral Home, Wakefield.

Lucy P. Urquhart

FRANKLIN -- Lucy Parham Urquhart of the 21100 block of Woods Trail died Sept. 9, 1998. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Oberry A.M.E. Zion Church. William M. Johnson & Sons Inc. is in charge.

Leticia C. Walters

FRANKLIN -- Leticia Cherry Walters, 29, of the 200 block of Forest Pine Road, died Sept. 8, 1998. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. today at St. Paul's Church, Murfreesboro, N.C. Hunter's Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.
