Josephine Dawson-Smith

NORFOLK -- Josephine Joe Ann Dawson-Smith, 56, of the 7000 block of Northgate Drive, died Sept. 7, 1999, in Sentara Leigh Hospital.

She was born in Grimesland, N.C., and was retired.

Survivors include three daughters, Penillaphy Dawson, Jackquelyn Gay and Annetta J. Smith, all of Norfolk; two sons, David E. Smith of Hillsboro, Ore., and Gary E. Smith of Greensboro, N.C.; her mother and father, Fannie M. and Joe F. Dawson; three sisters, Linda L. Gaskins of Laurelton, N.Y., Annie G. Ore of Fort Washington, Md., and Mary E. Chapman of Hampton; a brother, James E. Dawson of Glen Burnie, Md.; nine grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

A funeral will held at 11 a.m. Monday in Graves Funeral Home. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mary E. Harper

NORFOLK -- Mary Estella Harper, 89, of the 1000 block of Billings St., died Sept. 9, 1999. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Hale Funeral Home.

Marie L. Lucas

NORFOLK -- Marie Laura Lucas, 71, of the 9400 block of Hickory St., died Sept. 10, 1999, in a local hospital.

She was a native of Pittsfield, Mass., and was the loving wife of 42 years of John L. Lucas. She retired in 1992 after 36 years of service from NationsBank as a customer service representative. She was a member of Ocean View Baptist Church and its Agape Sunday School Class and Sheryl Gere Baptist Mission Women's Group. She was a past member of the Ladies Scottish Rite. She was predeceased by a sister, Eileen Savino.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sisters, Lil Starr and Connie DeBuc of Lakewood, Fla., and Rose Ostellino of Pittsfield, Mass; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by Dr. David N. Clay. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Ocean View Baptist Church.

Henry Rhodes Jr.

NORFOLK -- Henry Rhodes Jr. of the 700 block of Maryland Ave. died Sept. 11, 1999, at McGuire Veterans Hospital, Richmond. Funeral services are pending with Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Thomas Ridley

NORFOLK -- Thomas Ridley, formerly of Norfolk, died Sept. 3, 1999, in Oakland, Calif. Funeral services are pending with Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel.

C.E. Thurston Jr.

NORFOLK -- C.E. ``Pete" Thurston Jr., 86, of the 7300 block of Glenroie Ave., died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, in Cape Town, South Africa, while visiting with his daughter.

He was a Norfolk native and the son of the late Eulalia Brown and C.E. Thurston Sr. Mr. Thurston was a 1935 graduate of the Virginia military Institute and a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served as a lieutenant colonel in World War II. In 1947, he took over the family business and became president and CEO of C.E. Thurston and Sons.

Mr. Thurston served the Lord in many ways. He was a longtime member and very active in Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church, and more recently attended First Presbyterian Church of Norfolk. While living at Cedar Point, he was instrumental in starting St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.

He was one of the founders of the Heritage Bank and Trust and served on its board of directors for many years. He was very active in the Norfolk Kiwanis Club and served on the board of directors for Kiwanis International. He was active in the Norfolk Chamber of Commerce for many years. He was past president of the Cedar Point Club.

Mr. Thurston was a benefactor to many charitable organizations, having been active in fund raising for Virginia Wesleyan College, by having an active part in fund raising for the.Eastern Virginia Medical School and by setting up a scholarship fund for VMI students to attend EVMS.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Fulcher Thurston; two daughters, Diane T. Geiger of Suffolk and Leslie T. Summs of Cape Town, South Africa; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services are pending. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the C.E. Thurston Jr. Scholarship Fund of Eastern Virginia Medical School, or to the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Russell E. Tucker IV

NORFOLK -- Russell Evans Tucker IV, 48, of Burleigh Avenue, died Aug. 31, 1999, after a short battle with cancer.

Russ was the manager of the Robo Autobath on Hampton Boulevard. He served in the Navy and was a Vietnam veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Jane; his devoted daughter, Sara; his stepchildren, Daniel and Elizabeth Chavis; his mother, Sybil; a brother, Jim and his wife, Diane; his twin sister, Tina Smith, and her husband, Tom; his nieces, Kristan Tucker and Tucker Smith; his nephews, Russell Smith and Evan Tucker; a special niece, Rose; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services were held in Maryland on Sept. 3, 1999. A special memorial service will be held at 1:45 p.m. Tuesday at the David Adams Memorial Chapel, Gate 2, Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk Naval Base.

Roderick D. Wiley

NORFOLK -- Roderick D..``Charlie" Wiley, 72, of the 200 block of E. Lorengo Ave., died Sept. 11, 1999, in a local hospital.

He was born in Ernul, N.C., and retired in 1964 from the U.S. Navy. He also retired from civil service. He was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church at Naval Station Norfolk. He was past regional president and past national president of the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch No. 60, VFW Post No. 3160, and Knights of Columbus No. 3548. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy F. Wiley of Norfolk; two sons, Kenneth Warren Wiley and his wife, Gwendolyn, and Jeffery Lynn Wiley, all of Norfolk; a sister, Marie Folds of Norfolk; two brothers, Durwood Wiley of Maryland and Milton Wiley of North Carolina; and three grandchildren, Amber Elizabeth Wiley, Kurtis Wiley and Michael Wiley, all of Norfolk.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Forest Lawn Cemetery. A Fleet Reserve service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, where the family will remain until 8 p.m. to greet friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.

Margaret Corbett

PORTSMOUTH -- Margaret.Corbett, 76, of the 3000 block of Hale Court, died Sept. 6, 1999, in Maryview Nursing Center, Suffolk.

She was born in Ford City, N.C., and was the widow of Jasper Corbett.

Survivors include six daughters, Margaleen Taylor, Johnnie Mae Long, Shirley Tate, Evangelist Annie Dunbar, Darlene Corbett and Debbie Corbett, and a son, Linwood Corbett, all of Portsmouth; 25 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mildred Young of Philadelphia; a very special friend, Samuel Alston of Portsmouth; and a host of other relatives, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Renison Bucknor. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Cemetery, Portsmouth. Viewing will begin at noon today at the funeral home. The family will be at 125 Howard St., Apt. D, Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the procession to the funeral chapel.

Floyd L. Griffin

PORTSMOUTH -- Floyd L. Griffin, 59, of the 1900 block of Nashville Ave. died Sept. 9, 1999, at Maryview Medical Center.
Mr. Griffin was born in Portsmouth, and was a professional singer and entertainer for the group Cameo of New York. He was formerly employed at the Circle Restaurant and was a former member of Ebenezer Baptist Church.

He is survived by four daughters, Valencia Griffin of Staten Island, N.Y., Tracey Griffin of Norfolk, Vicky Dean-Adams of New York, N.Y., and Kendra L. Young of Portsmouth; two sons, Ricky Parrington of Boston, Mass., and Darnell L. Griffin of Philadelphia; a sister, Linda J. Davis of Portsmouth; a brother, Edward C. Griffin of New York, N.Y.; and 14 grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Fisher Funeral Home by the Rev. Curtis Edmonds. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. The family will assemble at 207 Beechdale Road.

Littleton L. Southall

PORTSMOUTH -- Littleton L. Southall of the 2600 block of Ash St. died Sept. 8, 1999, at Maryview Medical Center, Portsmouth.
Mr. Southall retired as a postman from the U.S. Postal Service after more than 30 years of service, and was owner of Photography by Southall, where he was a free-lance photographer for many years. He was a member of Mt. Hermon Baptist Temple, Portsmouth, where he was a former chairman of the Trustee Board and member of the Men's Fellowship. He was also treasurer of Central Civic Forum; member of Portsmouth Branch NAACP; president of Progressive Civic League of Portsmouth; member and former president of National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees, Portsmouth Chapter; member of Portsmouth Zoning Commission; board member of the Vikings Business Organization; service officer for Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 27; member of William Harrison American Legion Home Post 190; member of Olympian Sports Club; member of board of directors, Effingham Street YMCA; and volunteer for Meals on Wheels. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret G. Southall of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Jacqueline Tyler Brown of Richmond; a stepson, Capt. William P. Tyler Jr., USPHS, Silver Springs, Md.; a sister, Margaret S. Moore of Chesapeake; three brothers, Vernett L. Southall and E. Melvin Southall, both of Portsmouth, and Linwood M. Southall Sr. of Chesapeake; three stepgrandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at Mt. Hermon Baptist Temple, Portsmouth, by the Rev. F.R. Williams. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, with military honors. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Monday at Corprew Funeral Home, Portsmouth. The body will be taken to the church at 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Lois F. Price

PORTSMOUTH -- Lois Fleming Price, 69, of the 3800 block of Kingman Ave., fought a valiant fight and finished the race when the Lord, with his merciful hand, took her home to be with and glorify him on Sept. 11, 1999, in a Portsmouth hospital.

She was a native of Warren Plains, N.C., and was the wife of Francis B. Price. She was a self-employed music teacher and a member of Bethany Baptist Church, where she served as church organist for 17 years. She was past organist at Green Acres Presbyterian Church for 25 years. She was a graduate of Shenandoah Conservatory of Music with a bachelor of music education. She taught choral music at Woodrow Wilson High School in Fishersville, Va., and taught piano at Brevard College for two years. She was devoted to and loved the Lord and lived a life with a servant's heart to her family and friends, an example of faithfulness.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Laura P. Perry and her husband, Lee, and Shannon P. Jones and her husband, Rob, and a son, Tim Price, all of Portsmouth; two brothers, Holt Fleming of Lawrenceville, Ga., and Alvis Fleming of Littleton, N.C.; and two grandchildren, Beth and Kenny Perry.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Bethany Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene V. Primm. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Bethany Baptist Church. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Boulevard Chapel, is handling arrangements.

Kenneth D. Yarborough

PORTSMOUTH -- Kenneth Donell Yarborough of the 4700 block of W. High St. died Sept. 8, 1999. A funeral will be at noon Tuesday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Portsmouth. Rogers Funeral Home is in charge.

Wanda D. Elliott

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Wanda Darlene Elliott, 33, of the 100 block of Bayridge Court , died Sept. 8, 1999.

She is survived by a son, Isiah Temple Elliott; her parents, Dorothy Elliott and George Whitehurst Sr.; three sisters, Robin Elliott, Kimberly Woodley and Keisha Whitehurst; two brothers, Andre Whitehurst and George Whitehurst Jr.; her grandparents, David Whitehurst Sr. and Florence Whitehurst; four aunts; six uncles; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at noon Tuesday at New Hope Baptist Church, 395 Old Great Neck Road, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. E. Ray Cox Sr. The family will receive friends for remembrance and visitation from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at P.G. Thomasson Funeral Services Inc. Robert M. Harry

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Retired U.S. Navy Cmdr. Robert M. Harry, 68, died Sept. 10, 1999.

Cmdr. Harry was born July 1, 1931, in Berwick, Pa., and he graduated from Waynesville Township High School in Waynesville, N.C., in June of 1949. He was a longtime member and devoted servant of Avalon Church of Christ at Woodstock. He was past exalted ruler of B.F.O.E. No. 2268, and a master Mason of the Broadwater Lodge No. 0071 in Nassawadox, Va. A lifetime member of the V.F.W. in Virginia Beach, and a member of the Moose Lodge No. 683 in Exmore, Va. Cmdr. Harry retired from the U.S. Navy after serving 34 years. He enlisted in 1950, and served on the USS Wasp, USS Oriskany, USS Kearsarge, USS Midway and the USS Tallahatchie County. In February 1974, he was assigned to Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 12, and participated in the mine sweeping of the Suez Canal. After several other distinguished operations and assignments, he retired from the Fighter Squadron 101, and had resided in the Tidewater area ever since.

Cmdr. Harry was a devoted husband and father who leaves behind his beloved wife, Jill R. Harry; his loving daughter, Ginger L. Harry, and son, Robert M. Harry Jr. of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Kay Do Rood and sons of Shickshinny, Pa., and Janice McIlhenny of Doylestown, Pa.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday in Kellum Funeral Home, Rosewood Chapel. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Avalon Church of Christ by Jimmy Bennett, minister. Entombment will follow in Princess Anne Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Avalon Church of Christ at Woodstock, the South Plaza Rescue Squad No. 16, Virginia Beach, or the American Cancer Society.
