He attended the University of Pennsylvania and made that wrestling team. During World War II, he served as a gunnery chief in the U.S. Navy. Upon his return from the war, his life was active. In addition to his work in investments, he was a Scout leader. He organized and coached amateur wrestling at the YMCA. He was a lifelong health and fitness advocate and, for many years, did acrobatics on the beach for fun and entertainment. He was also an excellent dancer with a tuneful voice. He was a unique, kind and remarkable man.
He is survived by a niece, Beth Ewing, and many dear friends. He was predeceased by his loving, longtime companion, Nancy Dickinson.

Jeri Venola Lizut
VIRGINIA BEACH -- ``Jeri" Venola Lizut, born in Charleston, W.Va., departed this life Sept. 11, 1999, to be with her heavenly Father, after a long and valiant battle with cancer. Jeri was a devoted mother of five, grandmother of nine and a friend to many. In addition to her children and grandchildren, she is survived by three sisters, two brothers, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Mom will be best remembered by her never-ending love of life, her cherished flower garden, and her many ``projects." She loved her family dearly, and holidays were always made special by her and her never-ending supply of yummies.
Mom was an avid reader and admired for her extensive knowledge in just about all aspects of life. She consumed more books in her lifetime than one library can hold. Life was never dull or ordinary at Moms'. Each visit was a learning experience.
Mom always had a very active interest in her disease, reading any and all articles (orthodox and not-so-orthodox methods), then she would plan her next ``counsel" with her doctors. She made lists of questions to ask and provided new literature of all the latest treatments available. The doctors grew to expect her many articles she had collected since her last visit. Never to be deterred, she took the phrase ``Doctor Mom" to a new level. She was an inspiration to many with her determination, strength and will power. Mom never gave up hope for a miracle or a cure.
Either cooking her famous yummies for entire family and friends alike or planting a new flowering beauty, she will be sorely missed by all. Our Friend, Our Confidant, Our Dear Mother -- we will all miss you, for an eternity.
Upon Mom's request, there will be no service or viewing. Mom wished to be remembered by the way she was. To all she said, ``Plant a flower in remembrance of me, and share a yummy with someone you love."
Willard H. McDaniel
VIRGINIA BEACH -- Having lived a good and giving life for 73 years, retired Lt. Cmdr. Willard H..McDaniel, formerly of Virginia Beach, died at his Richmond home on Monday, Sept. 6, 1999.

Devoted to his family, he was active in every phase of his children's lives, serving as a Scout master, a school volunteer and as a coach for youth athletics. His love of sports spanned a lifetime, and was highlighted by his success as a golfer at the junior level, letters in football and basketball at Harvard University, and several memorable seasons as ``the voice of the Tides" at Norfolk's Met Park. Even after his own participation in athletics ended, he continued to follow favorite teams, and took immense pride in the continuing athletic accomplishments of his sons and grandsons.
Music was another of his passions, one which he passed down to each of his five children. An avid fan of Glen Miller and Tommy Dorsey, Bill spent many happy hours listening to and recording his favorite big band sounds. He was a storyteller, too, and put several stories on tape for use by his daughters in their classrooms. His love of children was immense, and he took immeasurable delight in creating and sharing his craft items with every child he met.

Whether traveling the seas aboard a destroyer or training young officers in the classroom, Lt. Cmdr. McDaniel was well known and respected for his consistent hard work and unwavering integrity. Following his retirement, he continued his support of the military community as a realtor, specializing in easing the relocation process for military families new to the area.
Most important, though, to this remarkable man were his wife and children. Always a loving father and devoted husband, he is survived by his wife of 51 years, Lois Dwight McDaniel; his children, Suzanne of Virginia Beach, Richard and Susan of Oberlin, Ohio, and their four sons, Scott, Alex, Andy and Tim, Barbara M. and William Haughwout of Hampton, Elizabeth of Richmond, and Steven and Helen of Hunt Valley, Md.; a sister, Mrs. Patricia Zimmerman of Richmond; and a host of family and friends amassed during a lifetime filled with laughter and sharing.
