Pauline L. Whaley

AYDEN -- Pauline Loftin Whaley, 78, a native of Norfolk, died Sept. 9, 1999, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville.

Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Whaley Dye and Polly Whaley Decker, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, N.H. Loftin of Ayden; a sister, Elizabeth Worthington of Chesapeake; and three grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Farmer Funeral Service Chapel, Ayden. A graveside service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service today. At other times the family will receive friends at the residence, 719 Fairmont Village Apt., Ayden.

Phyllis L. Daniel

LAWRENCEVILLE -- Phyllis Lucy Daniel, 79, died Sept. 10, 1999.

She was the widow of Clarence Hale Daniel, and is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Danny H. and Jeri Daniel, and a grandson, Ian, all of Franklin; and a brother and sister-in-law, Elton A. and Lucille Lucy of Henrico, N.C.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. today in Bethel Church Cemetery in Alberta. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association. Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, is in charge of arrangements.

Glenn R. Thomas

HENRICO COUNTY -- Glenn Reide Thomas, 49, died Sept. 10, 1999, at the Hospice of Central Virginia.

He graduated from Old Dominion University and had spent 27 years with the Traveler's Insurance Co.

He is survived by his mother, Aileen T. Thomas of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Julie May of Virginia Beach and Becky Neinstedt of Dover, Del.; one brother, Lester Thomas of Midlothian; and a longtime friend, Patti Davidson. He was preceded in death by his father, F. Reide Thomas.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today at Woody Funeral Home, Parham Chapel. A private burial will be held Monday, after which the family will meet with family and friends at 1 p.m. at his mother's home, 5804 S. Ottawa Road, Virginia Beach.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Hospice Foundation, 1130 Connecticut Ave. N.W., Suite 700, Washington, D.C. 20036-4101.

James A. Adkins Sr.

HILLIARD, Ohio -- Retired U.S. Army First Sergeant James Albert ``Uncle Jim" Adkins Sr., 53, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Columbus Community Hospital. He was predeceased by his parents, Ollie and Blanche Rood Adkins; brothers Tom Lawson Adkins and Butch Austin Adkins.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Lusa Rosumenko Adkins; children James A. Adkins Jr. of Raleigh, N.C., Sherry L. Kelley of Marietta, Ga., Angela A. Adkins and Annette L. Roth, both of Hilliard; four grandchildren, Austin and Dylan Adkins, David Roth and Jimmy Kelley; a sister, Barbara Ann Adkins; and a half brother, Jack Tomlinson.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Tidd Funeral Home, Hilliard, where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday by the Rev. David F. Berna. Interment will be in Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.

Evelyn C. Baer

ORANGE PARK, Fla. -- Evelyn Cecilia Baer, 60, the daughter of the former Frances Bernice Piper Harrell and the late Earl Jerome Harrell, passed away Sept. 10, 1999.

Mrs. Baer was born in Norfolk and made her home in the Norfolk area until 10 years ago. She was a communicant of St. Catherines Catholic Church, Orange Park.

She is survived by her husband of 24 years, John Albert Baer; mother Frances Herzdefeldt of Norfolk; four children, Michele Etheridge, Jeff Cooke, Kim H. Spry and Jay Hester; sister Ann Barker; brother Jerry Harrell; stepdaughter, Carol Ann Hollman; and 11 grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jacksonville Memory Gardens Funeral Home, Orange Park. A Mass of Christian burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Catherines Catholic Church, 1469 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park, with Fr. Ron Camarda, celebrant.

Lucy M. Joyce

LEESBURG, Fla. -- Lucy M. Joyce, 90, of the 6400 block of Match Point St., passed away on Sept. 10, 1999.

She was born in Volney, Va., and was the widow of George H. Joyce Sr. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Norfolk.

She is survived by a son, William K. Joyce of Charlotte, N.C.; three daughters, Phyllis J. Caldwell and Frankie J. Sedlmeyer, both of Leesburg, and Wanda J. Hudgins of Virginia Beach; nine grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, George H. Joyce Jr.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk.

Friends may join the family for visitation from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Temple Baptist Church.

Rosemary L. Opfar

DEVON, Pa. -- Rosemary Catherine Lehr Opfar, a native of St. Louis, Mo., and a longtime resident of Norfolk, died Aug. 23, 1999.

She was the wife of the late retired USMC Lt. Col. Charles Howard Opfar Jr. and is survived by her daughter, Patricia Ann Mellon of Paoli, Pa.; her son, John Lehr Opfar of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Cologne, Germany; a son-in-law; and three grandchildren. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her son, Charles Howard Opfar III.

A memorial service will be scheduled in Norfolk in late November. Memorial donations may be sent to McKendree United Methodist Church, 6870 N. military Highway, Norfolk, VA 23518.

Earnest A. Cooper

CHESAPEAKE -- Earnest Alton Cooper, 81, of the 1400 block of S. Bayberry Court, died Sept. 11, 1998, in his home.

He was a native of Phoenix City, Ala. He retired from the U.S. Navy with 23 years of service, and from civil service with 27 years of service. He was the widower of Jerrine Cooper.

He is survived by his daughter, Dorothy Jean Cogswell of Woodbridge, Va.; his son, Earnest A. Cooper Jr. of Chesapeake; four grandchildren, Gary Allen Longenecker of Atlanta, Ga., Alex Cogswell, Clay Cogswell and Chase Cogswell, all of Woodbridge, Va.; and one great-grandchild, Calib Longenecker.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Rosewood Memorial Park by Dr. Danny L. Owens. Friends may visit the funeral home Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Azalea Baptist Church. Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, is in charge.

Robert L. Dunning Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- Robert Lee Dunning Sr., 68, of the 2500 block of Lofurno Road, died Sept. 12, 1998, in a Chesapeake hospital.

A native of Ahoskie, N.C., he retired from E. Caligari & Son as a painter. He was an Army veteran of Korea.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara J. Dunning; three daughters, Brenda Fletcher and husband, Mel, of Richmond, Janice West and husband, Nelson, of Chesapeake, Sue Mick and husband, Terry, of Chesapeake; one son, Robert L. Dunning Jr. and wife, Michelle, of Martinsburg, W.Va. ; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Allen L. Dooley. The family will receive friends at Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, on Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.

Florence E. Makarewicz
CHESAPEAKE -- Florence E. ``Bird Lady" Makarewicz, 57, of the 1500 block of Campostella Road, died Sept. 6, 1998. Survivors include her husband, Simon S. Makarewicz; a daughter, Dora Olfers; her mother, Dora Southers; two sisters, Margaret Smith and JoAnn Blue; and a brother, Robert Olfers. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1561 Campostella Road, Lot 135, in Chesapeake.

Wilbur G. Bartlett

NORFOLK -- Wilbur Graham Bartlett, 82, of the 1300 block of Longwood Drive, died Sept. 10, 1998. A graveside service will be held later in the week at Bethlehem Christian Church Cemetery, Suffolk. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, is in charge.

Addie O. Hardy

NORFOLK -- Addie O. Hardy, of the 700 block of Marshall Ave., died Sept. 9, 1998. She was a retired school teacher and native of Norfolk.

She is survived by two sisters, Martha Smith and Naomi Gains, both of Portsmouth; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

A funeral will be conducted on Wednesday at 1 p.m. by Bishop Anthony Moses in the Norfolk Chapel of Community Funeral Home. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Inez P. Meekins

NORFOLK -- Inez Parker Meekins, of the 2500 block of Jasper Court, a retired high school math teacher in the Norfolk Public School System, died Sept. 11, 1998, after a brief illness.

Inez was born in Murfreesboro, N.C., where she attended Chowan Women's College, from which she received two diplomas. Her first job was as a school teacher in Stumpy Point, N.C., where she met her husband of 62 years, S. Warren Meekins. During World War II the family moved to Norfolk to join in the war effort and she began her Norfolk teaching career at Ruffner. She went on to teach for 30 years in Norfolk, including lengthy stints at Maury and Lake Taylor High Schools.

Inez was very active in the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron of Berkley Chapter No. 52 in 1951-52 and as Worthy Grand Matron for the State of Virginia in 1962-63. She also served in numerous other offices and honorary positions within the O.E.S. both in statewide and national capacities. In addition to her activities in the O.E.S., which she dearly loved, Mrs. Meekins was an active member of Miles Memorial Methodist Church and later, St. John's United Methodist Church, both in Norfolk. She was also active in several charitable endeavors including serving on the Boards of the Arthritis Foundation and the Eastern Star Home in Richmond.

Survivors include her sons, Melvin C. Meekins and his wife, Mary, of Ormond Beach, Fla., and Samuel W. Meekins Jr. and his wife, Robin, of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in St. John's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Daynor C. Shephard officiating. The family will receive friends at Hollomon- Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today from 5 to 7 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Inez P. Meekins Scholarship Fund, c/o Berkley Chapter No. 52, Edith Young, secretary, 2216 Old Greenbrier Road, Chesapeake, Va. 23325-4914.

Zelda J. Miller

NORFOLK -- Zelda Jones Miller, 94, died Sept. 11, 1998, in her home. She was the widow of Grady Francis Miller of Norfolk and the daughter of the late Emmett Thomas and Ida Jones of LaCrosse, Va.

Mrs. Miller was a teacher in the Norfolk Public School system for 35 years, teaching at Taylor School, Patrick Henry School, Lee School and Northside Junior High School. After retiring as a teacher, she did volunteer work for Sentara Hospital; The United Way; and the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, where she served as a docent. For a number of years she was a member of the Royster Circle of the King's Daughters. She was a long-time member of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club and the First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk.

Mrs. Miller is survived by her sister, Elsie J. Hale of Portsmouth; a daughter and son-in-law, Elsie and George Holliday of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; a daughter, Madeline E. Miller of Philadelphia; four granddaughters, Joanna Stewart Felts of Virginia Beach, Mary Beth Stewart of Norfolk, Kimberly Crawford Stewart of Norfolk, and Madeline Eliot Miller of Philadelphia, Pa.

A graveside service will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Forest Lawn Cemetery by Chaplain Robert H. Warren.

The family will receive friends at her residence, 1214 S. Fairwater Drive in Norfolk, today from 4 to 6 p.m. The family requests that flowers be omitted. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, is in charge.

Evelyn C. Poland

NORFOLK -- Evelyn C. Poland, 87, died Sept. 6, 1998, in DePaul Medical Center. She was a native of New York City, the widow of Otto Poland and a homemaker.

She is survived by her daughter, Evelyn H., and her husband, Jose M. Romero, of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Romero and her husband, Keith Kibiloski, of Virginia Beach, and Jose A. Romero of Norfolk; two great-granddaughters, Alyssa and Alanna Romero-Kibiloski, both of Virginia Beach. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Lawrence O. Romero.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. John The Apostle Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday.
