Shirley Zeigler Wallace
Shirley Zeigler Wallace, 84, died January 2, 2005.

Born May 15, 1920, in Rocky Mount, VA, she was the daughter of the late Beverly Brad and Mildred Cooney Zeigler, widow of Douglas Dee Wallace, Sr. and mother of the late Douglas Dee Wallace, Jr., and Barbara Wallace Shelton.

Mrs. Wallace was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and for thirty-five years served in the Suffolk City School system as a teacher and guidance counselor.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Kay Wallace Best and G. Lewis Best, Jr., of Richmond; sister, E. J. Grimes of Frederick, MD; brother, Richard Zeigler of Belpre, OH; grandchildren, George Lewis Best, III, Anne Best Barker, Douglas Dee Wallace, III, Charles Christopher Shelton, Mathew Palmer Wallace, Clifton Shawn Shelton; four great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Sandra Nunn Wallace of South Boston; son-in-law, Clyde C. Shelton of Virginian Beach.

Graveside funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. Robert J. Parks, Jr. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to Main Street United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA, 23434, or to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P. O. Box 1515, Suffolk, VA, 23439.

Goldie Byrum Turner
Goldie Byrum Turner, 93, died September 17, 2004, at Obici Hospital.

Born May 16, 1911, in Cisco, NC, she was the daughter of the late John Richard and Abbie Twine Byrum and widow of George Fenton Turner and mother of the late George F. Turner, Jr. Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church, the Women’s Missionary Union and the Kathi Thomas Circle.

Survivors include her daughter, and son-in-law, Patricia Turner and James H. Deaton; brother, Lloyd S. Byrum, of Chesapeake; grandchildren, Alicia Beth Turner, S. Mark Turner, Deborah Turner Condry, James H. Deaton, Jr.; six great grandchildren; devoted daughter-in-law, Alice S. Turner of Chattanooga, TN.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church by the Rev. Micah Voight and the Rev. Charles W. Thompson with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory Sunday from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Mary Helen Macklin Rawls Small
Mary Helen Macklin Rawls Small, 79, died on January 3, 2005, at Lake Prince Woods in Suffolk. Born February 7, 1925 in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Harold H. and Helen Birdsong Macklin, and was also predeceased by her first husband, J. Lewis Rawls Jr. She was a 1942 graduate of Suffolk High School and a 1946 graduate of Randolph-Macon Woman's College in Lynchburg, Virginia. Mrs. Small had worked as a teacher and was a member of Suffolk Christian Church for more than 50 years.

Mary Helen was an active member and leader of a number of organizations, including the Westover Garden Club and the Suffolk Literary Club. Her passion was golf. She was taught by her father as a child and she and her late sister, Martha M. Smith, played competitively all during their adult years. She was a member of a number of golf organizations, including the Suffolk Golf Association, Tidewater Golf Association and the U.S. Senior Women's Golf Association. In 1965 she was a runner-up in the
Virginia Women's Amateur Golf Tournament in Hot Springs, Virginia.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Wilfred T. Small; three children, J. Lewis Rawls III, Rebecca Rawls Habel and Frank M. Rawls; and seven grandsons, James M. Habel IV, Tucker R. Habel, Matthew C. Rawls, J. Lewis Rawls IV, J. Stephen Rawls, Joseph G. Rawls and Michael A. Rawls. Mary Helen's family expresses their deep appreciation to all of her caregivers, both private and the Lake Prince staff, and with deepest appreciation to her very special caregiver, Gisele Bradshaw.

A funeral service will be conducted Friday, January 7, 2005 at 11 a.m. at Suffolk Christian Church with a reception following in the church fellowship hall. Burial will be
private. The family will receive visitors at the R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, January 6, 2005. Memorial donations may be made to Suffolk Christian Church Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 1457, Suffolk, Virginia 23439; Randolph-Macon Women's College at 2500 Rivermont Avenue, Lynchburg, Virginia 24503-1526; or Southeastern Virginia Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 20 Interstate Corporate Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, Virginia 23502.

Milby William Lloyd Jr.
Milby William Lloyd Jr. of Wilmington, N.C. died Thursday, March 20, 2003, at New Hanover Regional Medical Center.

He was born in High Point, N.C. on January 18, 1913, the eldest son of the late Milby William Lloyd and Mildred Jane Nurney Lloyd. He was also preceded in death by a brother, George Nurney Lloyd in 1985, and by a cousin, Claude Howell, 1997, who was a resident of Wilmington.

Mr. Lloyd was a graduate of Grosse Point High School, Detroit, Michigan, and attended the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He later entered the United States Foreign Service, serving in Nicaragua, England, Germany, Sweden, and Turkey. He was a longtime resident of Carolina Apartments in the historic district and a member of Residents of Old Wilmington.

Surviving are numerous first cousins, including Robert B. Lloyd Jr. of Greensboro, NC; Joseph Vigal of Tampa, Fl; Jane Harris Gatling of Suffolk; Peggy Beale Keller of Tulsa, OK; Ann Beale Parmelee of Greenwich, Ct; and second cousins, R. Bradford Lloyd of Wilmington, NC and Lisa Lloyd Parker of Greensboro, NC.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, September 16, 2004 at Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev John F. Shappell.

Memorials may be made to the charity of one’s choice.

Anna C. Roberts Brown
Anna C. Roberts Brown, 78, of Suffolk, passed away on Friday, October 8 after a long, valiant struggle with cancer.

Born in Milwaukee, N.C, Anna was the second child of the late James Erol and Pauline Johnson Roberts. She graduated from Conway N. C. High School; she was one of the two youngest students in the class of 1942.

Mrs. Brown loved being a wife and mother above all things. She liked to sew, do crafts and loved to read. One seldom saw her without a book close by. She was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church in Suffolk.

She is survived by her loving and caring husband of 56 wonderful years, Thaxton M. Brown; daughter, Ann Hunter B. Walker and husband Arthur of Chesapeake; three sons, Thaxton M. “Tim” Brown Jr. and special friend Jan Rae of Webbers Falls, Okla., James W. “Jamie” Brown and wife Sharon of Franklin, Gregory C. “Greg” Brown and wife Patty of Suffolk; seven grandchildren, Rachel, Ryan, Alaina, Emily, Karla, Mallory and Katie; three great-grandchildren, Frankie, Libby and Faith; brother, James Erol Roberts Jr. and wife Betty of Franklin; several nieces and nephews, several close first cousins, and many good friends, She will be missed by everyone.

A funeral will be conducted Monday at 11 am at Main Street United Methodist Church by the Rev Robert J. Parks, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7 to 8:30 pm at the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory.

Memorial donations may be made to the Organ Fund at Main Street United Methodist Church, 202 N. Main St., Suffolk, VA, 23434; Heartland Hospice, 150 Burnett’s Way, Ste 220, Suffolk, VA 23434, or the American Cancer Society, 604 Constance Woods Dr. Suffolk, VA 23434.

H. Eugene Pierce
H. Eugene Pierce, 88, died Jan. 4, 2005, in Chesapeake General Hospital. Born Dec. 10, 1916, in Middlefield, Ohio, he was the son of the late Howard Sharpley and Alice Masters Pierce and widower of Elizabeth H. Pierce.

Mr. Pierce was an Army veteran of World War II and was retired from the administrative office of the University of Delaware. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Newark, Del., was very civic minded and charitable throughout his life and served actively in the Newark Lions Club.

Survivors include his daughter, Cynthia L. Pierce of Newark; a son, Geoffrey E. Pierce and daughter-in-law, Carolyn M. Pierce of Suffolk; sister, Martha P. Rogers of Warren, Ohio; grandchildren, Lorna Steadham of Sylvania, Ohio, and Jeffrey Pierce of Oceanside, Calif.; and great-grandson, Colby Steadham of Sylvania.

Services will be held at a later date in Newark. R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

Jacque B. “Jack“ McDaniel
Jacque B. “Jack“ McDaniel, 89, died September 12, 2004, in Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

Born January 19, 1915, in Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Lyman R. and Ruth Williams Brothers and the widow of Paul Bryan McDaniel, Jr. Mrs. McDaniel was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and retired in 1985 as the bookkeeper for Tidewater Occupational Center.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Ron Bruce of Virginia Beach; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul Bryan and Vickie McDaniel, III of Kernersville, NC, Richard Brothers and Lois McDaniel of Waynesboro, VA; sister, Betty Brothers Newman of Eclipse; grandchildren, Kelly, Jonathan and Jason McDaniel, Heather McDaniel.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, at 7:00 p.m. in the R. W. Baker & Company Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Richard J. Bruce. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Thursday from 5:00 p.m. until service time. Memorial donations may be made to The Gideons International, P. O. Box 1214, Suffolk, VA, 23434.

Mary Roberts Bess
Mary Roberts Bess, 66, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, went to be with the Lord on October 15, 2004.

Born May 24, 1938 in Suffolk she was the daughter of the late Alys Knight and Willie Thomas Roberts. She was preceded in death by a sister, Linda Kay Wyatt. Mary had been a loyal employee of the Suffolk Health Department for over 27 years.

Survivors include her husband, Julian Royce (Duke) Bess; sons, Phillip Royce Bess and his wife Cindy of Suffolk, Christopher Julian Bess and his wife Lori of Suffolk; grandchildren, Bryan Phillip Bess, Taylor Rawls Bess, Erin Nicole Bess and Shane Christopher Bess; sisters, Barbara Roberts Wilkins of Suffolk, Francis Roberts Chittum of Suffolk and Carolyn Roberts Hedgspeth of Kutztown, PA; brothers, Franklin Thomas Roberts of Virginia Beach, Willie Wyatt Roberts of Suffolk and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, at 11:00 a.m. in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory by the Rev. Byron McCreary. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends in the funeral home Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P. O. Box 1131, Fairfax, VA, 22038-1131.

Dorothy Hancock Burton
Dorothy Hancock Burton, 79, a retired registered nurse, died Jan. 9, 2005.

Born Aug. 20, 1925, in Smithfield, Va., she was the daughter of the late Jesse and Elma Hedgepeth Hancock. Mrs. Burton was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. As a registered nurse, she taught at the Louise Obici School of Nursing for 12 years and then served as a nurse for the health department for 10 years.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence W. Burton; daughter, Christine B. Ward of Suffolk; son and daughter- in-law, Clarence W. and Diana Burton Jr. of Spotsylvania, Va.; brother, Jesse T. Hancock Jr. of Waynesboro, Va.; grandchildren, Douglas Ward, Lee Anne Ward, Jonathan Burton and Hayley Burton.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Robert J. Parks Jr. The family will receive friends in R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond Suffolk Rescue Squad, P.O.
