CLAYTON E. HENDERSON

Clayton Eugene Henderson died March 5, 2011.

He was the son of the late Mary and Dwight Henderson.

He is survived by his wife, Dixie Henderson; daughter, Becky Criner and husband Todd of Suffolk; two sisters and one brother of Lewiston, IL; five grandchildren, Danielle Atkins, Mary Curran, Jennifer and Zack Campbell and Mason Criner and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, VA.

ELEANOR S. BROOKS GREGORY

Eleanor Smith Brooks Gregory was born June 25, 1922 in Fireco, West Va. and moved to Suffolk in 1959 where she made her home. She was predeceased by her husbands; Robert M. Brooks, Sr., and Eugene Gregory and a son; Eric Paul Brooks.

Eleanor retired from Obici Hospital as a nursing aide in the delivery and nursery, and once again from the Main Street Methodist Church Day Care where she was a day care worker in the infant room. She was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church and the McLemore Bible Class.

She is survived by two sons; Grover E. Brooks (wife-Betty) of Edenton N.C, Robert M. Brooks, Jr. (wife-Jeanne) of Suffolk, daughter-in-law Annette Brooks, two sisters; Patty G. Kent of Charleston, WV, and Marlene Perdue of Mason OH, 6 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, and many stray pets that she so fondly adopted and cared for.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday April 16, 2011 at 11:00 am in Main Street United Methodist Church by Rev. Robert J. Parks, Jr. The family will receive friends following the service in the social hall. R. W. Baker & Co Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk is serving the family.

In lieu of flowers the family request is for memorial donations be offered to Main Street United Methodist Church B & I Fund, 202 N. Main Street, Suffolk, Va. 23434.

RALPH B. KING

Ralph Butler King, devoted Father, husband, and friend peacefully passed through “those Golden Gates”, Monday, March 7, 2011 at his home surrounded by family. Born in Suffolk, Va. on November 25, 1925 he was predeceased by his parents M. B. and Clairine Ward King, two brothers, Winfred King and Rufus Powell and his wife of 46 years, Alice Carter King.

Left to cherish his life and the memories abound are his daughter, Faye King Milteer of Alma, AR. (Gary); son Kenneth Butler King (Tricia); sister Christine King Nelms all of Suffolk, Va. A loving grandfather and a great grandfather he leaves behind four grandchildren, Tracy Sapp, Trina Shuey, Health Milteer, and Taylor King; and six great grandchildren, Brittany and Mikayla Sapp, Hanna and Olivia Shuey and Ellie Milteer and Emily Dodd.

Also to cherish his life in his later years was his additional family. Leaving behind was his devoted wife of 11 years, Mary Britt King and her children, Bessie Mae Mathias (Stewart), Wayne Britt (Sandy) and Faye Bright (Arthur) along with six grand children who called him Paw Paw.

Mr. King served in the U. S. Army in the Europe Theater and retired after 35 years of service with Virginia Power Company, Suffolk division as an Auger Truck driver and Operator. To his co-workers he was always called “Clem”. Known for his master vegetable and flower gardens Mr. King was a master at growing any and all things but what he loved most was watching it grow and then giving it away.

A funeral service will be held at 11 A. M. Thursday, March 10, 2011 in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street with burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 P. M. to 9 P. M. at the funeral home. . On behalf of the family in lieu of flowers please make any donations to the American Heart Association, the American Diabetes. Foundation or any other organization of your choice in his name.

PAUL D. HOLLOMON

Paul Davis Hollomon, 65, went to be with the lord April 14, 2011. He was born in Norfolk to the late Genevieve and Joseph D. Hollomon.

Paul was a truck driver, a life member of Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad and Suffolk Church of God.

He is survived by his wife, Carolyn; four daughters, Michelle Virginia Hollomon, Gabrielle Josephine Hollomon, Danielle Elizabeth Hollomon, and Christelle Genevieve Hollomon; sister-in-law Shirley B. Arthur and family; brother-in-law John Byrum, Jr. and family.

A funeral service will be held Monday, April 18, 2011 at 12:30 PM in Suffolk Church of God, 205 Kilby Ave, Suffolk by the Rev. Arthur Lee Harris with burial in Albert G. Horton Veterans Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church, Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 6 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, PO Box 1515, Suffolk, VA 23439.

ALAN RAY MCCOY

Alan Ray McCoy, 67, fought an amazing fight with brain cancer and went to be with the Lord on April 16, 2011. He was the son of the late Raymond W. and Margaret Brooks McCoy.

Alan was born on April 20, 1943. After graduating from Whaleyville High School, Alan worked for Union Camp Paper Mill in Franklin, Virginia for 35 years. Following his retirement he consulted for Leripa Paper Tech.

Alan was an avid car enthusiast and built and re-built several early model Chevrolets. He was also an active member of the Suffolk Rod and Muscle Car Club and a member of Bethlehem Christian Church. With their love of the outdoors, Alan and his wife Mitzi built their dream home on Lake Speight. It is here they made many happy memories with their beloved pets: Maggie, Dakota, and Petunia.

Alan is survived by his wife, Mitzi Austin McCoy; his sons Kenneth McCoy and spouse, Nicole, and Alan McCoy and spouse, Shelly; his grandchildren Caitlin Brook and Noel Constance McCoy and Jacob, Caleb, Katie, and Conner McCoy; and a host of family and friends.

The family is very appreciative of all the shared love, support and prayers. Friends are welcomed at the home. A Celebration of Life will be held at 385 Turlington Road, Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 3pm.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942 or UVA Neurosurgery Center, PO Box 800212, Charlottesville, VA 22908 in honor of Alan McCoy. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory is serving the family.

JOHN R. BABB, SR.

John Rudolph Babb, Sr., 78, died April 20, 2011 at Southampton Memorial Hospital in Franklin, VA. He was the widower of Lakie Morris Babb; and was the son of the late Bill A. and Margaret D. Babb. Mr. Babb was also predeceased by his son, James N. Babb; and his brother, Tilson Babb.

Mr. Babb was a member of the Local Union 540 and served two years in the Army.

Survivors include his daughter, Peggy Hardy and husband, Kevin of York, PA; son, John R. Babb, Jr. and wife Kimberly of Suffolk; grandchildren, Jamie Woodington, Brian Woodington, Danielle Hardy, John A. Babb, Avery N. Babb, Bishop T. Babb, Austin Harris, Logan Harris, and Gage Pierce; sister, Margaret Trew and husband Bruce of Franklin.

A graveside service will be conducted April 22, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Holly Lawn Cemetery by the Rev. Darwin Edwards. R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. is serving the family.

DAVID S. SHORT

David Steuart Short, 51, passed away April 19, 2011 in Suffolk.

Services will be private. R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory is serving the family.

MICHAEL R. IVAN

Michael R. Ivan, 69, of Gates, NC passed away April 20, 2011 at Sentara Obici Hospital.

Services will be held at a later date.

LYNORE DACOSTA WARD

Lynore daCosta Ward, 64, passed away peacefully April 22, 2011. Lyn was the wife of James Edwin "Ed" Ward. She was the daughter of the late Allan D. and Eleanore M. daCosta and was predeceased by her sister, Yvonne daCosta.

Born in New Jersey, she was a graduate of Mahwah High School, in NJ, the University of South Alabama, and Creighton University. She was a teacher at the Pruden Vo-Tech Center in Suffolk.

Besides her loving husband; Lyn is survived by her sister, Alana Wilson and husband Darold of Lake Oswego, OR; aunt, Gail "Sis" Morgan; nephew and his family, Christopher John Simons Jr. and wife, Kimberely, and their sons, Christopher John Simons, III, and Nicholas Francis Simons of Lake Oswego, OR.

A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, April 26, 2011 at 4:00 pm in the R. W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., by the Rev. Jud Ihlefield.
