HUGHES
Ina Margaret Risdon Hughes, age 91 years, passed on May 8, 2001 and will be truly missed by all who love her. Survivors include her daughter, Norma Ann (Nan) Alschbach and son-in-law, Philip Alan Alschbach; granddaughters, Margaret Carol Cadle and husband, Edward, Kathryn Ann Alschbach and fiancee, Robert Buchanan, Linda Marie Hanson and husband, Theodore. Three great-grandchildren also survive, Cynthia Louise Cadle, Edward Philip Cadle and Margaret Grace Hanson. Mrs. Hughes grew up with her brother and sister, Walter and Glenna, in Detroit, Michigan and lived there for many years until nine years ago when she came to Richmond to be near her family. Arrangements are private. Donations are gratefully accepted in her memory by the Childhood Language Center, 4202 Hermitage Rd., Richmond, Va. 23227-3755.

JILEK
Edwin Nixon Jilek, 87, of Lanexa, Va., went to be with the Lord May 5, 2001. He was the widower of Virginia E. Jilek and is survived by his sister, Frances Rothenberger of Colonial Heights; stepchildren, Shirley Baker and Nita Newell, both of West Palm Beach, Fla., Susan Dougherty and Michael Faircloth of Lanexa, Va., and Linda Goldman of Newport News; six nieces, Kay Miller, Ray Rothenberger, Barbara Ward, Marsha Thompson, Peggy Clark and Donna Clarke; and many other family and close friends. Mr. Jilek was a retired employee of Mountcastle Lumber Co. with 23 years of service, with the Stone Webster Engineering Co. for 10 years, and was a volunteer with the Providence Forge Volunteer Rescue Squad for 20 years. He was a graduate of Chesterfield High School class of 1931 and a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII. He was a medical technician for Hendricks Field in Sebring, Fla. A memorial service will be held Friday, 7 p.m. at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave. Interment private.

LEWIS
Homegoing services for Mrs. Daisy P. Lewis, who departed this life Saturday, May 5, 2001, will be Saturday, May 12, 2001 at 3 p.m. from the Wayland Baptist Church, Stevensville, Va., with the Rev. Joy Baytops officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Viewing will be Friday, 6 to 8:30 p.m. at the church. She is survived by one daughter, Linda Lewis; four sons, Hezekiah M., John T. Jr., Thomas B., and Alvin R. Lewis; three brothers, Wilson, Thomas and Warren Parker; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Professional services entrusted to White-Tidewater Funeral Home, Jamaica, Va.

LEWIT
Dorothy B. Lewit, 82, formerly of Turtle Creek, Pa., died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by her loving, devoted husband of 52 years, J.C. "Bud" Lewit; three sons and their wives, Wade M. McClintock and his wife, Violet, Lt. Col. (Sel.) Robert A. Lewit, USAF, and his wife, Anne, and Richard B. Lewit and his wife, Lynn; seven grandchildren, Wade III, Daniel, Asheley, Thomas, Brittani, Christopher and Jacob. Mrs. Lewit was a volunteer at St. Mary's Hospital for 20 years and was a Past Worthy Matron of Tuckahoe Chapter No. 163 O.E.S. The family will receive friends Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. and Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the West Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad Street, where an Eastern Star memorial service will take place Friday at 7 p.m., and where funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2001. Interment to follow in Westhampton Memorial Park.

MARTIN
Kathryn Trevillian "Miss Kitty" Martin, 89, of Richmond, widow of R. Saunders Martin, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001. She is survived by two daughters, Gloria M. Sydnor and her husband, Robert, and Helen M. Verlander and her husband, Wayne; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and her sister-in-law, Virginia M. Booker and her husband, Tom. Mrs. Martin was a member of Patterson Avenue Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11, in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to your favorite charity.

MASON
Otha Earl "Junie" Mason Jr., 73, of Richmond, died May 8, 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Bonnie M. Wells; and granddaughter, Brandy W. Fields. Mr. Mason was retired from Reynolds Metals. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Morrissett Funeral Home, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rt. 10). His funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Interment Sunset Memorial Park.

MATTHEWS
Mrs. Lester Lewis Matthews departed this life Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by her husband, Ashton Matthews; sons, Vincent and Stephen Matthews of Union, N.J.; three grandsons, Shawn, Shane and Shamar; one daughter-in-law; two sisters, Mary Kimbrough of Goochland and Thelma Lewis of Richmond; one brother, Daniel Lewis of Washington, D.C.; three aunts, several nieces, nephews and cousins, two sisters-in-law and other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Robert Mealy Funeral Home, Goochland. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11 at 1 p.m. at the Fauquier Baptist Church, Goochland. Rev. Melvin A. Woodson, pastor, officiating. Please omit food.

MILES
Milton O. Miles, age 89, of Richmond, passed away on Tuesday, May 8, 2001, after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Ada C. Miles. He is survived by three stepchildren, Juanita E. Bryan of Mechanicsville, Howard L. Edwards Jr. of Mechanicsville, Louise E. Covey of Richmond; and a nephew, Waverly Miles Jr. of New York. Remains rest at the Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Graveside services will be held 12:30 p.m. Friday, Forest Lawn Mausoleum.

MITCHELL
Departed this life May 7, 2001, Mrs. Helen A. Mitchell of 3811 Larchmont Lane. Memorial services will be held 1 p.m. Friday at Ephesus Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 3700 Midlothian Tnpk.

MOTZ
Esther Elizabeth Motz, age 24, of Fredericksburg, died May 8, 2001 at Mary Washington Hospital. Esther had just completed her degree requirements for Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University. She graduated with honors and received numerous awards including recently being voted outstanding senior by the faculty. She was a dedicated and hardworking artist, respected by the students and faculty at VCU, and also much loved for her warmth and generosity of spirit. Surviving are her parents, Dorin D. and Maria K. Motz; and two brothers, David E. and Joseph S. Motz. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, 2001, at Mullins & Thompson Fredericksburg Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 12, at Zoan Baptist Church. Interment Laurel Hill Memorial Park. MULLIS
Doris Mullis of Richmond passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2001. She is survived by her husband, William Mullis; granddaughter, Dee Osborne of Mineral; and grandson, Edgar Pearson of Doswell. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Forest View Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 36153, Richmond, Va. 23235.

ORANGE
Lotis M. Orange, 84, of Richmond, died Monday, May 7, 2001. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ernestine H. Orange, after 51 happy years of marriage, and is survived by his son, Carl E. Orange; a grandson, Chris Orange; a granddaughter, Kelly Fanis; and a great-grandson, Chase Fanis. Mr. Orange was born on Taylor's Mountain in Bedford, Va., served in the U.S. Army as a sergeant during World War II, and was a member of Woodland Heights Masonic Lodge #345 A.F. & A.M., The Richmond Scottish Rites Bodies, and the Acca Temple Shrine. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Road. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at Westhampton Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.

PICKELS
Helen Harris Shelton Pickels died May 8, 2001 after a long illness. She was born November 9, 1902, daughter of Charles Richard and Florence Riddell Harris of the Gum Spring area, Louisa Co. She is survived by two sons, Morris D. Shelton and Eugene R. Shelton of Glen Allen, Va.; and a daughter, Merle Shelton Ott of Hampton, Va. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Myranne Ott Wylie, Jacob Shelton Ott, Sharon Shelton Corbin, Morris D. Shelton Jr. and Iris Shelton Deffley; four great-grandchildren, Thomas and Tiffany Corbin, Morris D. Shelton III and James D. Wylie; also a number of nieces and nephews. Helen was predeceased by her former husband, T. Fowler Shelton of Louisa Co. and her husband of ten years, Nash A. Pickels of Glen Allen; also five brothers and sisters, Bernard (Bunny) Harris, Richard Harris, Charles (Sam) Harris, Kitty Harris Martin and Effie Harris Moss. Many in Louisa County will remember Mrs. Pickels for her most generous donation to the Louisa County Library. A private burial service conducted by the Rev. Michael Kendall was held on May 9, 2001 at Gum Spring Methodist Church. The family would like to express their appreciation to the caregivers at the King's Adult Home for the excellent care provided Mrs. Pickels her last years of life. POWELL
Sharon Powell, 59, of Midlothian, passed away May 9, 2001. She was preceded in death by her two infant children; her father, Jim Beall; her mother, Helen Braithwaite Beall; and special aunt, Charlotte Mitchell. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Vicki Eddins and Lisa Dickey; her sister, Carol Barnette; brother, Tom Beall; five grandchildren, one great-grandchild; and special friends, Phil Reese and Betty Edgemon. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends Friday from 4 till 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Grove Baptist Church. Interment Woodbine Cemetery in Harrisonburg, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Virginia or the American Cancer Society.

RATLIFF
Johnny W. Ratliff departed this life May 8, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Wanda W. Ratliff of Richmond, Va.; son, Johnny Ratliff, Jr. (Theresa); granddaughter, Melissa Dawn Ratliff, all of Clarksville, Tenn.; sister, Brenda Adkins; brother, Hobbie Ratliff, both of Hinton, W.Va.; three nephews, three nieces, two great-nieces, one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, other relatives and friends. His remains rest at the W.S. Watkins & Son Funeral Home where the family will receive friends Friday, May 11, 5 to 6 p.m. and where funeral services will be conducted Saturday, May 12 at 12 noon, Pastor Ken Peters officiating. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens.

ROBERTS
William A. Roberts of Richmond died Wednesday, May 9, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis M. Roberts; daughter, Pat Coates; son, William A. Roberts Jr.; daughter-in-law, Grace Fuentes-Roberts; grandson, Jacques Fuentes; granddaughter, Kiara Fuentes; sister, Sylvia Thurston; and nieces and nephews. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the family will receive friends Friday. A graveside service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Westhampton Memorial Park.
