February 21, 1845 Died, on Wednesday evening, the 19th inst., after a short but painful illness, Mrs. ANN D., consort of Mr. Joseph CARNES, aged 37 years - - The devotedness of her attention to her domestic duties and the fulfillment of all obligations of religion, were beautifully manifested by her acts of maternal and conjugal affection at home, and of charity and benevolence abroad. She was indeed a 'priceless jewel" to her husband and children, while the poor and afflicted will feel that they too have lost an inestimable friend. The funeral will take place from the residence of Mr. CARNES, on Cumberland street, tomorrow, at half past 3 o'clock, at which his friends and acquaintance are invited to attend.

February 24, 1845 We have heard, with deep regret of the death of Dr. WILLIAM HOPE, of Hampton, who departed this life on Thursday night last, from an attack of catarrhal fever. The community in which he was born, and in which he has lived, respected and useful, for more than fifty years, will mourn this event as a public loss. He formerly represented the County of Elizabeth City in the Legislature, and had for many years subsequent been a magistrate of the County and also in the fulfillment of various other public trusts, which the confidence of his fellow citizens in his integrity and intelligence had confided to him. He was in manners, habits and character, a gentleman worthy of the high estimation in which he was held by all who knew him.

February 27, 1845 Supposed Murder of a wife by her husband. We learn that Coroner Betts, of this city, was summoned yesterday to hold an inquest in Berlin on the body of Mrs. GREEN, of that Place, supposed to have been poisoned by her husband, Henry G. GREEN - The circumstances as related to us are as follows: The parties had been married about a week. Mrs. Green was unwell, and told the woman who attended her that she feared her husband had poisoned her, as she had seen him putting a white powder into her tea. On being questioned by her what it was, he replied that it was flour. She drank the tea and died soon after Green was seen previous to the death of his wife taking down a bottle of arsenic from the drugs in a store in Berlin. Mrs. Green was from Thornton, N.H. Her maiden name was MARY ANN WYATT. (Berlin is in Southampton, Va)

Her funeral will take place at 11 o'clock this morning. The friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend without further notice.

March 9, 1845 Died on Friday morning this 7th inst. of a paralytic stroke, WILLIAM K. MACKINDER, Esq. in the 76th year of his age. Mr. M. was a native of England, but commenced a residence in Norfolk in the year 1799, as an extensive importing merchant, and soon after became connected y marriage with a highly respectable and extensive family in this town, where he has reared up an amiable family in our community, to solace him in his declining years. At an early period of life he made a profession of religion, in communion with the Presbyterian church, and till his death, adorned that profession by a corresponding walk and conversation. He was of a meek and benevolent spirit, which was manifested even in his daily intercourse with the world and conciliated the esteem and sympathy of all who knew him. His funeral will take place on Sunday at 10 o'clock, from the Presbyterian Church.

March 9, 1845 In Washington, on Tuesday, the 4th inst. Mr. WILLIAM SIMMONS, Clerk in the Land Office' aged 68 years. He was formerly a resident of Norfolk.

March 9, 1845 In Philadelphia, on Tuesday last, Miss MARY CRAWLEY, daughter of the late Mr. John Crawley of this Borough.

March 21, 1845 Died, in Elizabeth City, N.C. on Saturday night last, MATHEW CLUFF, Esq. in the 65th year of his age. Mr. CLUFF was a native of Ireland and in early life settled in this Borough where he resided for fifteen years, respected for his social virtues and admired for his intellectual gifts, which, although not cultivated by education were of a superior order. About 25 years ago he removed to Elizabeth City, where he became extensively engaged in commerce, and till his death applied his attention to its pursuits.

March 25, 1845 Died at his residence in Portsmouth, on North street, yesterday morning, at 8 o'clock, after much pain and suffering, our old and esteemed fellow-townsman and friend, HOLT WILSON, Esq., Treasurer of Portsmouth & Roanoke Rail Road Company, aged 65. It is needless to speak of one who was so generally known as our friend. He left a family of twelve children, their only parent he was, and many other relatives. He died "in the communion of the Holy Catholic church, in the fear of God and in humble dependence of His Grace." He was a member of Trinity Church Vestry. I believe that his should is in the land of the blessed.

March 27, 1845 Died, on Tuesday night, after a few days illness, in the 69th year of his age, Mr. EDWARD HUDSON, for many years a respectable inhabitant of this Borough. He was a native of Cumberland, (England) and became a resident of Norfolk about the year 1799, when, having been brought up in the mercantile profession, he was employed for some years in the large importing and shipping house of James Donaldson & Co.; subsequently to which he embarked in business on his own account, and maintained a respectable station in the commercial community. Mr. Hudson was of a disposition to do right to all his fellow men; his integrity was unquestioned, and non can complain of favors unrequited or injury sustained at his hands.

January 1, 1847 - It is with feelings of the deepest regret that I take my pen to announce the death of our highly esteemed countryman JOSIAH SIKES, who departed this life on Tuesday morning, the 12th inst., in the 46th year of his age, at his residence in Mount Pleasant. Although he never professed a change of heart, yet he was upright in all his dealings, candid in his opinions, and a true believer in the Christian religion. He was the kindest of Parents and the best of husbands, he was a man of great hospitality; his hands were ever open to the appeals of distress. An affectionate wife, seven children and numerous other relations are left to mourn their irretrievable loss. His name will ever be remembered affectionately by all who knew him.

February 18, 1847 - [communicated] Departed this life, on the 11th inst., after a short but distressing illness, MRS. HANNAH H. BROWN, in the 51st year of her age. Her bereaved children, with a large circle of friends, mourn her sudden departure, but sorrow not even as others who have no hope. Mrs. B., as a mother and friend, possessed those virtues which peculiarly adorn those sustaining these endearing relations, and, as a Christian, has left cheering evidence that she has chosen the good part which shall never be taken away, and that she has gone to be with the blood washed throng who shall forever dwell with God and the Lamb. The poor have lost a firm and lasting friend and deeply will they feel her loss, for Charity was as her right hand Maiden, and the blessings of the oppressed followed in her foot paths.
