August 23, 1849 -- Died, yesterday afternoon, very suddenly Major CHARLES H. SMITH, late a Paymaster in the U.S. Army, aged 63, one of our most worthy and esteemed citizens. A wife and large family are left to mourn the loss of a most affectionate and truly religious husband and father. The friends and acquaintances of the family are requested to attend his funeral from Christ Church, this afternoon, at half past 5 o'clock.

August 23, 1849 - Departed this life on Saturday morning, the 18th inst., at Deep Creek, Va., after a lingering illness of Consumption, of nearly seven months duration, which he bore with that fortitude which characterizes the Christian, Mr. JAMES SPRATT, in the 53d year of his age, leaving a kind and affectionate wife, brother and sister, and five children, together with a large circle of relatives and friends to mourn their loss. In the death of Mr. S. the community in which he resided has lost a useful citizen, and the society in which he moved one of its most valuable members. Although not a member of any church, yet he had been a professor of religion for a number of years previous to his death, and was always very punctual in attending Divine worship as long as his bodily health would admit of it. And when prostrated upon a bed of affliction, from which he was destined never to arise, he was always anxious to have a minister of God or some pious friend to pray with him and converse about heaven. Being conscious of his approaching end, a few hours previous to his death, he assembled the members of his family, from his aged and infirm companion to his youngest son, around his bedside, and requested that they should not weep for him, but entreated them, even with his last breath, to endeavor to meet him in heaven. Being asked on several occasions if he was prepared to go from hence, replied that whenever his Heavenly Father should see fit to take him unto himself, he should hail the event with the utmost delight, as he was confident that heavenly angels were hovering round his dying bed to waft his immortal spirit unto the God who gave it. Having taken leave of all who surrounded his bed, he fell asleep in the arms of death without a struggle or a groan. May God be the supporter of the widowed wife and children. "Let me die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his."

August 24, 1849 - Of consumption, on Sunday last, 19th inst. Aged 38 years, Mr. THOMAS JAS BRAITHWAITE, leaving a fond wife, five children, and numerous relatives to mourn their loss. His kind and friendly manner towards all, his industrious habits, and ingenious turn of mind, are well and favorably known to many in the community. He was a member of the Methodist E. Church, and left the confident and consoling assurance that his soul would sweetly rest in the Paradise of God.

August 23, 1849 -- In Portsmouth, on Sunday the 19th instant, ROBERT STANWOOD [Thomas], only son of Phillip G and Sarah M. THOMAS, age 14 months.

Capps, of Memphis, Tennessee, aged 68 years, Mrs. SARAH CAPPS, formerly of this city, where, by her amiable and affectionate disposition, devoted piety, and kind attentions, she had endeared herself to a large circle of relatives and friends. She was for many years a most consistent member of the Methodist Church. When called to contend with the last enemy, her characteristic language was "Not my will by Thine, O Lord be done," and she fearlessly and peacefully passed away to the spirit world. "And I heard a voice from Heaven saying unto me, Writhe, Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth"

August 25, 1849 - In Mobile, on Monday, 13th inst. A.m. after a long and painful illness, which she bore with Christian resignation, Mrs. FRANCES M. KAEFFER, consort of Woodbury L. Kaeffer. She was a native of Portsmouth, Va., but has been for many years a resident in this city where she had endeared to her a large circle of sympathizing friends, who now mourn her loss. Well may it be remarked of her: "Servant of Christ, well done! Praise be thy new employ, And while eternal ages roll, Rest in thy Saviour's joy."

Belote, aged 32 years, leaving a fond husband and seven children, and a large family of relatives to mourn their irreparable loss, -- but they mourn not as those who have to hope, "for the righteous hath hope in his death." The friends and acquaintances of the family are invited to attend her funeral, this Monday afternoon at half past four o'clock, at the residence of her husband on Church St.
