February 2, 1852 Died, on Saturday last, the 31st ult. J.C.C. TAYLOR Esq. of the firm of Walther H. Taylor & Co. He was a native of this City and enjoyed an extensive popularity, the result of those generous impulses of public spirit and benevolent feeling for which he was distinguished. His death, in the meridian of life and usefulness, has cast a gloom over a large circle of relatives and friends. As a token of their high respect for the deceased, as their presiding officer, and in honor of his memory, the "Aid Fire Company" hoisted their flag at half mast, and hung the front of their Engine House with the insignia of mourning.

February 27, 1852 In Nansemond County, Feb. 21st. Mr. JACOB H. KELLY, aged 45 years. Mr. Kelly was a man beloved, honored and lamented. He has always followed the honorable avocation of tilling the soil, and in all his business transactions, he met his engagements with scrupulous fidelity and promptness, and all were characterized by liberality and a strict sense of justice. He was a steadfast and upright man, displaying both in private and public affairs, a commendable enterprise and energy. He was surrounded by a large family, many relations and friends. His disposition was always cheerful; and nothing gratified him more than contributing to the wants and pleasure of others. He was generous without ostentation. "But we all must die. His body, finally, under the influence of disease wore out and he dropped into the arms of death calmly and composedly.

March 11, 1852 Died, yesterday morning, HENRY, only son of Captain John P. and Ellen McMATH, age 3 yrs. The friends of the family are invited to attend his funeral from the residence of his father on Bank street this afternoon, at 4 o'clock, without further notice. So sweet and gentle was the disposition of this dear child, that although cut down in tender youth, the hearts of all who knew him were entwined about his by lasting cords which have been rudely snapped by the hand of Death. Through the protraction of his disease, which was very tedious, his sufferings were great, yet meekly and without a murmur, did he bear them, breathing out his last with calm fortitude. The friends of this amiable youth must console themselves with the knowledge that his pure spirit, now disenthralled from his suffering body rejoices with the happy ones above, to whom he was so much assimilated while living; and now that he is with them indeed, why should any mourn that which is their loss, but his eternal gain.

March 18, 1852 THOMAS MOORE is dead. He died on the 26th Feb., at his residence, Slopenton Cottage, aged 72 years. For the last few years, his mind had become affected, but no man of the last century had seen more of what was best and most brilliant in every department than Thomas Moore, and of the polished and intellectual society in which he moved, he was one of the brightest ornaments - To the last he was an intimate friend of Lord John Russell, and his death coincided with his friend's fall from power. Moore was born in the same year [1780] with Beranger. He desired to be buried in the churchyard of the parish where he died.

October 6, 1859 -- A MURDEROUS AFFAIR -- A most brutal, and apparently premeditated murder was perpetuated on Tuesday night, between 7 and 8 o'clock, by a man named Fred Collins, on JAMES WILLIAMS, a sailor. Collins was bar keeper to Edward Wallace, proprietor of West Water Street, and Williams was mate of the schooner Mary Adeline. The parties fell into a quarrel at the corner of Water Street and Woodside's Lane, and some harsh words passing between them they clinched for a fight, but were soon separated, and no one seems to have been aware that any harm was done to either. Williams, however, went into a clothing store close at hand and procured a shovel with which he was returning to renew the fight, but before he reached the door he staggered and fell, exclaiming. "I am done for!" He was picked up and it was then discovered that he had been stabbed in two places, in the right and left side, just above the hips and that the intestines were protruding through the gashes. Drs. Wilson and Wright were called to see the wounded man, but they soon saw that he was past recovery, "the intestines being severed, and the instrument with which the wounds were inflicted, a dirk knife eight inches long, had penetrated the heart. Collins was immediately arrested and lodged in jail, and will be examined today before the Mayor. Collins acknowledged to the crowd that gathered around, that he had done the bloody deed, and said that Williams had trod on him long enough -- that he [Collins] "was a small man, but at last lit upon the right man." It seems from what we could learn, that there was an old unsettled difficulty between the parties, and not having seen each other for some time ( Williams having just returned from a voyage,) when they met, the feud was renewed with this fatal result. Williams was considerably intoxicated at the time, and had been on a spree for more than a week. When sober he is said to have been quiet and inoffensive. Williams lingered till yesterday at noon, when he died. Coroner Summers held an inquest on the body, whose verdict was, in substance, that the deceased came to his death by wounds inflicted by a knife or other instrument in the hands of Frederick Collins. A post morthem examination was made last evening, but we have not heard the particulars.

November 24, 1866 MASONIC FUNERAL - Yesterday morning a portion of the Masonic Fraternity paraded and acted as honorary escort to the remains of Mr. L. L. CLEMENTS, a merchant of Hamilton, North Carolina, who died on Wednesday at the hospital of St. Vincent de Paul. The cortege passed to the wharf of the steamer Orient, on board of which the remains were placed for conveyance to North Carolina and the late home of the deceased.

November 24, 1866 RUN OVER AND KILLED. -- A negro, known by the name of OWEN, a poor castaway wreck of the F.B. While attempting yesterday to get on a locomotive passing the intersection of Wide Wather street and Market square, fell under the wheels, which passed over his arm and breast. He died in a short time.

November 29, 1866 DIED - At her residence in Northampton, Va. Nov 8th Mrs MARY WOODSON FITCHETT, wife of Edward C. Fitchett, aged 32 years. God's ways are not our ways, and his thoughts not our thoughts; and thus it pleased Him to remove from this earth a fond wife, a loving mother, and affectionate sister. She looked well unto the ways of her household, and her children will rise up and call her blessed. Truly may it be said, none knew her but to love her, or named her but to praise. Her bereaved husband will miss her soothing voice and genial influence; her little ones will miss her affectionate caresses and watchful care. But 'tis ever thus the brightest gems are the first to be taken, the loveliest and purest to be snatched away. With the most perfect loveliness and exquisite neatness of character, she combined the most fervent morality which laid the foundation for the most exalted piety which the family enjoyed. During several years, spent in the most lingering bodily pain, she sought to know the only living and true God. On the bed of languishing she first learned to know Him, who was her rod and staff, through the dark valley and shadow death. Her dying bedside gave a full assurance of her final reunion with the departed loved ones in a happier and purer world than this. Her test was well applied, and let us all follow her example and desire to die the death of the righteous and our last end will be like hers. "Loveliest of women, Heaven is in thy soul. Beauty and virtue shine forever round thee. Brightening each other. Thou are all divine"

July 23, 1859 - At Woodburne, her home, in Hanover county, on the 20th Inst., in the 88th year of her age, Mrs. ELLEN V. S. GREGORY, formerly Ellen UPSHUR. Wherever she was, from childhood to the grave, her kind, winning manner fascinated young and old, and won for her devoted friends. Bright in intellect, sparkling in conversation, full of life and spirit, she yet possessed a sympathizing heart, overflowing with kindness and melting into tears for the distresses, not of friends merely, but of strangers. She was a member of the Episcopal Church, a bright and cheerful Christian, delighted in doing good and performing deeds of charity. Farewell, sweet spirit! Thine be eternal bliss.
