U.S., Social Security Death Index, 1935-2014
Nov 28, 1866 - Died of Pneumonia in Norfolk, Va. on the 12th instant, Mr. JOHN B. THURMAN, in the 42nd year of his age. The subject of this notice was a native of Lynchburg, and had recently removed to this city. to the most of us he was well known, and all that might be said in commendation would be freely endorsed. It is not however, the purpose of this memento to indulge in panegyric; but justice and friendship alike demand more than a passing notice. Within the past month he paid a visit to the home of his childhood. it was then noticeable that his health was declining. Death has since confirmed the gloomy forebodings of his friends, notwithstanding medical skill and every attention friendship could suggest. Thus he passed away in early manhood, one whose life was characterized by all of those benevolent and amiable qualities which elevate and ennoble human nature; kind, without motive, his highest pleasure arose from his efforts in aiding in the comfort and happiness of others. Possessing a laudable degree of respect for his rights but free of improper temper or malice, e was ever ready to forgive and forget injury. -- Quietly and without ostentation he passed the journey of life beloved by all who know him and we humble trust has gone to that reward prepared for the pure in heart. His moral remains are laid beneath the sod of his native hills there to mingle with those of his family who have gone before him. His spirit has returned to Him who gave it., and who doth all things well. Peace to his ashes.-------Mr. Thurman leaves a wife and two children to mourn his loss. He was a kind and indulgent husband and parent, and his death will cast a chilling blight upon them. He was for a short time a resident of this city [Norfolk] and was an estimable and worthy citizen and his death will be felt by a wide circle of friends.

Dec 11, 1866 - Funeral of a Fireman - Yesterday afternoon at 8 o'clock the Fire Department paraded, and escorted to the grave the remains of HENRY W. WILL, a deceased member of the United Fire Company. The coffin containing the remains was carried upon the truck of the Union Hook and Ladder Company, drawn by a detachment of the United members -- then came the members of the Union in citizens' dress, followed by the members of the United in red shirts and fire hats and black pants. --- A drum and fife discoursed martial music as the cortege moved and the gong of the truck was struck at intervals. The bells, too, were tolled and thus the procession wound its way solemnly through our streets and out the the city of the dead, Cedar Grove Cemetery. Mr. Hill was orderly Sergeant of Company H., Sixth Virginia Regiment, Mahone's Brigade, during the late war, and did faithful duty as a Confederate soldier up to the surrender of General Lee. His age was thirty-seven years.

December 11, 1866 DIED -- on the 5th instant, HENRY CULLY, of Matthews county, aged 38 years.

December 13, 1866 Died suddenly on the 5th instant, Mr. GEO CULLY, a resident of Matthews county, Va., in the 38th year of his age. It is with feelings saddened by this sudden dispensation of providence that we assume the task of paying this tribute of respect and love to our departed brother. As a friend and relative he was ever diligent in trying to promote the happiness of others, and he was invaluable as an acquaintance and neighbor. [these 2 might be the same person]

December 12, 1866 Died suddenly at the residence of her brother-in-law, in the county of Princess Anne, on the 27th of November, MISS LAURA A. WHITING in the 36th year of her age. It is with feelings saddened by this sudden dispensation of Providence, that we assume the task of paying this tribute of respect to our departed sister. In the morning of life she was gathered into the fold of Christ, and united herself with the Baptist Church in this city, in connection with which she spent the remaining years of her life, shedding the luster of godly example upon all with whom she associated. In our journey through life it is not often that we are thrown in contact with one around whom so many excellencies cluster. As a daughter, she was ever dutiful and obedient, and labored with all the diligence that love could prompt, to cheer and comfort the latter years of her only surviving parent. To her sisters she was ever kind and gentle, and spared no pains to render happy those around her; possessing a clear and vigorous intellect, she was peculiarly fitted for giving advice, even to those older than herself, and her male, as well as her female friends, had often to rely on her more mature judgment. As a friend and neighbor her acquaintance was invaluable, and in the sick room, she proved truly a "ministering angel." For several years past, she has been engaged in the instruction of youth, a position for which she was eminently qualified, her many amiable qualities winning the hearts of the children and causing them to submit entirely to her control. May her death be sanctified to the benefit of surviving relatives and friends, and her virtues emulated by all who knew her, and in eternity may it be known that our loss has proved indeed to be her gain.

December 17, 1866 BURIAL OF THE REMAINS OF A LATE CONFEDERATE SOLDIER -- The remains of MELZAR Gardner FISKE, killed at the battle of Malvern Hill, and disinterred at Richmond, were brought to Portsmouth, his native home on Saturday evening. His body was received in Portsmouth by the remnant of the Old Dominion Guard, Ninth Virginia Regiment, and a number of the citizens who escorted the remains to Portlock's Cemetery, where they were finally interred. Deceased was a son of D. D. Fiske, of Portsmouth, formerly editor of the Portsmouth Transcript. Young Fiske was a brave soldier and died nobly on the field. Portsmouth received his remains with a gushing heart, yet proud in the consciousness of retaining the ashes of one of her noblest dead. May he rest in peace.

December 31, 1866 Again are we called to mourn the loss of one of the noble Army of Virginia. ROBERT RIDDICK, only son of Richard H. Riddick, at the early age of thirty seven, died at the Crawford House in Portsmouth, Virginia, December 25th, 1866, after a short illness of then days. The deceased entered the Army early in 1861, at the call of his mother State, Virginia, as a private in the 13th Virginia regiment Cavalry, leaving his home in Mississippi for that purpose, and remained faithful to his post until the surrender of General Lee. He was universally beloved for his many social and manly qualities. As a soldier, messmate and companion, he had few equals. Generous to a fault, slow to anger, but jealous of his honor when injury was intended. The writer has been his comrade and messmate in field and camp, and his associate in the private walks of life, in every position has found him worthy and possessed the love of all who knew him. An affectionate son to his aged parents, a devoted brother to his affectionate sister, who doth on his love. May Heaven have mercy on his afflicted parents and sister, and may they be consoled with the thought of his generous and repentant soul. None having known him but what loved him.

Jan 5, 1867 DEATH OF A NORFOLK MAN. - Schiller has somewhere said that we meet and part with old friends, or casual acquaintances in this life just as people do at watering places. This remark has been suggested by a paragraph in the Baltimore Sun, in which the death of a citizen of the Monumental city is chronicled. Our contemporary says: Captain GEO. ALLEN died, after a brief illness, on Saturday morning last. He died at the age of fifty five years and from an inflammation of the liver, which no remedial agencies would reach. Capt. Allen was born at Norfolk, Va., and during his life was what might be called essentially a "son of the sea." He was always engaged in building and the command of vessels from this port, the last of which, we believe, was the bark Conthest. He either built on his own account, or connected with others, some twelve or fifteen vessels out of this port Of his personal character and his intercourse with his fellow-men, nothing more can be said, that while laboring for himself, he never forgot others, who, by their own exertions, claimed his attention. He was generous, patient under what might be deemed personal injury and his benevolence often showed itself to those who least expected it." Who recalls the image of the dead man? Who remembers when the old Roman trod our streets in the flush of youth? Some will recall his name, but those who do so, are among our eldest inhabitants for whom we have copied this notice.
