ROSI
Dr. Fred David Rosi, 80, of Richmond, Va. and Manteo, N.C., died Monday, May 7, 2001, after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Frances; his daughters, Bree Rosi Merrick and Margaret Jillson Bassett of Richmond, Wynne Jillson Abrams of Westport, Conn., Deborah Jillson Russo of Medfield, Mass.; his sisters, Emma Rosadene of Meriden, Conn., Judith Tani of Manchester, Conn.; and seven grandchildren. He was born in Meriden, Conn. to Umberto and Elvira Rosi, January 13, 1921. Dr. Rosi was educated at Yale University receiving a B.E. in 1942, an M.E. in 1947, an M.S. (physics) in 1948 and a Ph.D. in 1949. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy serving as engineering and minesweeping officer in the Pacific during World War II. Dr. Rosi spent most of his professional life in industrial research at R.C.A. Laboratories in Princeton, N.J. as Vice President Materials and Device Research. He came to Richmond in 1975 as General Director of Research and Development for Reynolds Metals Co. Dr. Rosi completed his career at the University of Virginia serving as Executive Director Energy Policies Studies Center and Professor, Department of Materials Science until 1995. He was a professor emeritus at the time of his death. Dr. Rosi served as consultant to NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the Central Intelligence Agency, and numerous corporations. He was a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Institute of Metallurgical Engineers. Dr. Rosi was awarded the David Sarnoff Gold Medal in Science. He served on NASA Research Advisory Committee, Board of Editors Industrial Research Institute, National Academy of Science Committee on Electronic Materials and Devices, National Materials Advisory Board, Science Advisory Board, Gould Inc., Honorary Advisory Board - Journal of Materials Science, Virginia Coal and Energy Commission, and Advisory Committee on Advanced Materials for Virginia's Center for Innovative Technology. Dr. Rosi also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Trenton State College and on the New Jersey Board of Higher Education. He held 12 issued U.S. Patents on semiconductor, superconductor and thermoelectric materials and devices. He published 47 articles in materials, physics, and engineering journals. He was a member of the Country Club of Virginia and a communicant at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Goochland County, Va. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 11 at St. Mary's Church Cemetery, 12291 River Road.

SHARPE
Darrell C. Sharpe of Richmond died May 8, 2001. Surviving are two brothers, Jerry and Alvin Sharpe; two sisters, Edith Sanderlin and Victoria Williams; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at Scott's Funeral Home, 115 E. Brookland Park Blvd. Graveside services will be held Friday, 1 p.m at Evergreen Cemetery.

SMITH
Charles Peyton Smith III, age 55, died Wednesday, May 9, 2001 at his residence. He is survived by his wife of the home, Marsha Raye Smith; one son, Charles Peyton Smith IV of Richmond, Va.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Bethany and Bill Hare and Lara Pace Smith; a sister and brother-in-law, JoAnne and Roger Washburn; and two grandchildren, Emory Hodge Hare and Peyton Elizabeth Hare, all of South Hill. Also surviving are his father and mother-in-law, John Marshall and Elizabeth "Boo" Moody of South Hill. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, Mildred and Charlie Peyton Smith Jr. Mr. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church and served as a deacon. He was a board member of First Baptist Christian School and a former Eagle Scout. A celebration of life service will be conducted by Rev. John Alford at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 11, 2001, at First Baptist Church, with interment to follow in Oakwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Farrar Funeral Home. Memorial considerations may be directed to First Baptist Christian School, 410 N. SPAIN
Lucille Simmons Spain, 93, of Richmond, widow of Benny C. Spain, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by three sisters, Linda Carter, Elsie Fox and Pauline Graves; and two brothers, Raymond Simmons and William Simmons. Mrs. Spain was a lifelong member of Boulevard Baptist Church. Remains rest at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and where services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 10. Interment in Riverview Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Boulevard Baptist Church.

TIBBS
Earl "Pop" McDonald Tibbs, 81, of Varina, passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at his home with his wife by his side. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Madeline N. Tibbs; two sons, Earl Wayne Tibbs and Dennis M. Tibbs; one daughter, Vickie T. Armes; one brother, Forrest L. Tibbs; three sisters, Lillie T. Lee, Lucille T. Schultz and Louise T. Estes; five grandsons, three great-grandchildren. Mr. Tibbs was a WWII Army veteran in the Eighth Special Service Company, 86th Division, a member of the Varina American Legion Post 233 for over 35 years, and a longstanding member of Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. His remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and where there will be an American Legion service conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Four Mile Creek Baptist Church. Interment Washington Memorial Park. Donations may be made to the Four Mile Creek Baptist Church, the Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad or the Bon Secours Hospice.

VINES
Departed this life May 8, 2001, Irene Epps Vines. She is survived by her children, Frederick, Cathy, Benjamin, Reginald Vines, and Angel Vines Logan (Melvin); eight grandchildren; parents, Viola and Lee Epps of Pine Top, N.C.; four brothers, four sisters, a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Chiles Funeral Home, 2100 Fairmount Ave. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, 2 p.m. from Dill Avenue Church of Christ, 3200 Dill Avenue, with Pastor Joseph Brown officiating. Interment Carber Community Cemetery, Pine Top, N.C. Remains will rest in church one hour prior to service.

WALTON
Kirkland Elmo Walton, 75, of 2809 Midlothian Pike, departed this life May 5, 2001 after a period of lengthy illness. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosalie J. Walton; two devoted sons, Dr. Kirkland R. Walton and E. Barry Walton; one grandson, Barry D. Walton, one daughter-in-law, Brenda Bowman Walton; one brother, John Rayford Walton; two close family friends, Nathaniel Bullock and Stanley Archer; mother-in-law, Nancy C. Jackson,; nine sisters-in-law, four brothers-in-law, one niece, two nephews, two aunts, and numerous cousins, other relatives and friends. Remains rest at the Mimms Funeral Home, 1827 Hull St. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 11, 2001 at 11 a.m. from the First Baptist Church, 1501 Decatur St. Rev. Dwight C. Jones, pastor, Rev. Cheryl Ivey Green, officiating. The family will receive friends at the church at 10 a.m. Friday, one hour before the funeral services. Interment in Maury Cemetery. Relatives and friends attending funeral services, assemble at the church, 10:30 a.m.

WITBECK
Naomi Elizabeth Witbeck of Richmond passed away Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She was the widow of Joseph Lucas Witbeck and is survived by her sister, Marion Strickland Hastings of New Kent; several cousins; and a devoted friend, Mike Jordan. Mrs. Witbeck was retired from Harleysville Insurance Co. with 30 years of service. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Oakwood Cemetery. Family and friends will assemble at the funeral home one hour prior to service.

WILLIS
Mary Kasenchak Willis, age 86, of Mechanicsville, widow of John L. Willis, died Tuesday, May 8, 2001. She is survived by her sister, Helen K. Bacci of Mechanicsville; her nephew, Bill J. Kasenchak of Mechanicsville; her niece, Andrea M. Via of Newport News, Va.; also two great-nieces and one great-nephew. Mrs. Willis was a member of New Bethesda Baptist Church. Remains rest Laburnum Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 2110 E. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Oakwood Cemetery. WRAY
Margaret Raikes Wray, 85 of Midlothian, went to be with the Lord May 9, 2001. She was the widow of Edward T. Wray and is survived by her son, Larry Wray and his wife, Sheila S. Wray; three grandchildren, Jerry Wray and his wife, Debra, Crystal Wray and Victoria Wray; four great-grandchildren, Kayla Keffer, Timothy Spencer, Jasmine Wray and Faith Spencer; and a sister, Ruth Burton. Mrs. Wray was a member of First Commonwealth Church. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull Street Rd., where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and where a funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday. At the family's request there will be no graveside service.

WRIGHT
Twyla Geddie Wright, age 80, of Richmond, passed away Monday, May 7, 2001. She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Paul B. Wright; three children, Twyla W. Gendron of Richmond, Melanie W. Miller and her husband, Ric, and Paul B. Wright Jr. and his wife, Kathy, all of Atlanta, Ga.; one sister, Dorothy G. Gammon and her husband, Raymond A. of Highland Springs; four grandchildren, Laura and Paul Gendron, Jacob Suarez and Travis Wright. Mrs. Wright was a member of the Faith Bible Class of First Baptist Church, past president of the Northam Garden Club, past president of Richmond Council of Garden Clubs and of the Piedmont District, and a 20-year member of the board of directors of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs, and state chairperson for the Blue Star Memorial Highway. Her remains rest at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 Parham Rd., where family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 11. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of First Baptist Church. Interment Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Star Memorial Highway, c/o Elene Combs, 319 E. Fincastle, Tazewell, Va. 24651.

ALLEN
Cena J. Allen, age 89, of Richmond, died Friday, August 10, 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Allen; three sons, Kenny, Leroy and Edward Allen. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and Ralph Lee; her daughter, Carol Allen; daughter-in-law, Pat Allen; four grandchildren and their spouses, Ann and David Butler, Ricky and Diane Allen, Chris and Robin Lee and Lisa Gilmer; her great-grandchildren, Becky and Jessie Butler, Richie and Nicole Allen, Christopher, Hunter and Trevor Lee and Stephen Gilmer. Her remains rest at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 4650 S. Laburnum Ave., where the family will receive friends 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday and where funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday. Interment Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Henrico Volunteer Rescue Squad, Hospice of Central Virginia or the Samaritan Fund at The Hermitage of Richmond.

AVERETTE
Bruce Lee "Hammer" Averette, 39, of Richmond passed away August 8, 2001. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bessie and Charlie Averette. He is survived by his wife, Christina; children, Audi, Collin, Lauren and Catherine; sister, Joyce Weatherford and her husband, Pop; brothers, Rickie and his wife, Linda and Jimmie and his wife, Janis; and other nieces and nephews. His remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Home's Chippenham Chapel, 6900 Hull St. Rd. where the family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. Monday at Maury Cemetery.

BALES
Wesley H. Bales, 74, of Richmond, died Thursday, August 9, 2001. He is survived by his wife, Frances A. Bales; a sister, Jean B. Corden, of Goldsboro, N.C.; numerous nieces and nephews. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired Realtor, and a member of the Hermitage Country Club. Friends may call 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.
