December 7, 1872 Death of Mr. JOHN D. DOZIER In the funeral notices in yesterday's Virginian, we recorded the death of this gentleman, well and favorably known in this community. He was for a number of years a carpenter mate in the United States Navy, and was on the Macedonia in the Japan expedition of Commodore Perry. The first pieces of American machinery put in operation by the Japanese was put up by him. He was a man of an infinite friend of anecdothe and varied information, and like all old sailors somewhat eccentric in his ways. His funeral took place yesterday afternoon, from the residence of A.J. Manning, Esq., and his remains were followed to the grave by many sympathizing friends.

December 18, 1872 Death of Mr. E.A. POLLARD -- Our Lynchburg exchanges received last evening announce the death of this gentleman., which occurred in that city on Monday afternoon. the Lynchburg News of yesterday, speaking of his death, remarks: Mr. EDWARD A. POLLARD, died in this city yesterday afternoon, after a lingering illness of two years and more, from Bright's disease of the kidneys. Mr. Pollard was a native of NELSON county, Virginia, and we suppose was about 45 years of age. He was one of the most brilliant, eloquent and forcible writers of this age, and was the author of several works which hold a front rank in the literature of the country. He was also as brilliant as a journalist, during his connection with the press some years ago, as he subsequently became as an author, and his death creates a void in literary circles which it will be difficult to fill.

January 11, 1873 Drowned - Thursday evening a negro man named WILLIAM BUTT, an oysterman, belonging to this City [Portsmouth] was drowned off Pinner's Point. He was in a small boat and leaned out the stern to shift the rudder, but the motion of the boat caused him to loose balance and fall overboard. He leaves a wife and 2 children. His body has not yet been recovered. There was a small boy in the boat with him at the time.

January 17, 1873 DEAD - We are pained to learn of the death of Dr. VIRGINIUS B. BILISOLY which took place Wednesday evening, the 15th instant, at half-past seven o'clock, at his farm near Bower's Hill, in Norfolk County. His illness was a long one alternated with days of hope and of gloom, but the death messenger came at last, and he passed quietly away like a spark which revives for a moment and then goes out forever. He was born in this city in August 1826, and received the name of Virgnius Bartholomew, and when he died, was in his forty-seventh year. Perhaps none of our citizens were better known or more highly respected than Dr. Bilisoly. His practice in the city was large and increasing, until declining health compelled him to forego it, and seek rest in the country. During the late war he was present at the battles of Corinth and Shiloh, in the capacity of surgeon of an Alabama regiment in the Confederate Army, and was afterwards surgeon in chief and president of the Medical Board at Selma, Alabama, under General Dick Taylor. His remains will be brought to this city today by a special train, which will start from his late residence on High street for that purpose, at 9 o'clock a.m. and his funeral take pace from St. Paul's Catholic church, this morning at 10 o'clock.

January 20, 1873 MASONIC FUNERAL -- On Saturday the remains of the late JAMES R. WEBB arrived here on the steamer Adelaide from Baltimore, under an escort of Masons from Union Lodge No 60, of that city. The remains were taken in charge during the morning by Atlantic Lodge No 2, of this city, and carried to Elmwood cemetery and buried with Masonic honors. From the Baltimore Sun, of the 18th,, we learn that Mr. WEBB was formerly an engineer in the United States Navy, and as such served during the late war in the Ossipee. Rhode Island and Niagara, and was under Admiral Farragut in the naval operations before Mobile and New Orleans, and since the war he had been engineer on the Worcesther, Sea Gull, Rebecca Clyde and Lucille, steamers of the Liverpool and Charleston lines sailing from Baltimore.

January 21, 1873 DIED - In Portsmouth on Sunday night 19th instant at the residence of her brother. Rev. B. R. Duval, in her 31st year, Mrs. SARAH M. HENDERSON, wife of Mr. Thomas Henderson of Louisiana. The friends of the family are invited to attend the funeral at Dinwiddie Street Church Tuesday, at 3 o'clock.

January 21, 1873 Death has indeed chosen a shining mark. Died, at her residence, No. 293 Church street Norfolk, Va. Tuesday, the 14th day of January after a short illness, Mrs. ELIZABETH J. WIDGEN, aged 43 years. She was left a widow with two young children for fourteen long years. How wisely and well, how purely and faithfully, how firmly and steadily, how justly and tenderly she applied herself to the care of her children and an aged mother in circumstances of trial and difficulty, is known to all of her mourning friends. Her labor for her loved ones is finished. Her mission on earth is accomplished. God has taken her up to the society of the sin freed and rejoicing ones of all time, and every Christian heart must add -- "The Lord give, The Lord has taken her away. Blessed by the name of the Lord." We tender to the bereaved family the heartfelt sympathy of the entire community.

January 23, 1873 In Portsmouth on the 20th instant, GEORGE W. KING, in the 51st year of his age. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at 8 o'clock from his late residence on Hart Street, between Dinwiddie and Washington streets.

January 23, 1873 In New York city 17th instant ANNIE R. daughter of the late Dr. Joel MARTIN, U.S.A. The funeral will take place from Christ Church today, Thursday at 11 o'clock a.m. Friends of the are respectfully invited to be present.

January 23, 1873 Died at Wesphalla, in Southampton county, the residence of her husband, Dr. Thomas J. Pretlow, Sr. on the 23d of December, 1872 Mrs. CLARA ASHTON PRETLOW, aged 66 years, the youngest and only surviving child of Alexander and Evelina Garrett of Albemarle county. The death of this accomplished and Christian lady leaves a gap in the family circle which can never be filled. Married very early, her life had been full of sunshine and happiness. So happy was she in love of her husband and her children who had grown up around her to gladden and bless her life, that she might well have been pardoned had she desired to clip the wings of time and live on here forever. But true Christian as she was, she knew that this life was not all; that it was but a step to a higher, a nobler and more perfect one beyond the tomb, and always held herself ready to obey the call and pay the last great demand of nature. Her daily walk in life bore witness to her faith. A true friend, a kind neighbor and from him that would ask, she turned not away; generous and hospitable those who have so often gathered around her hospitable board will miss her warm welcome and genial smile. She has gone -- "Escaped the gloom of life, an immortal soul, Here lays its moldering tenement of clay, Safe where no cares the whelming billows roll, No doubts bewilder and no hopes betray."

January 24, 1873 Died On Thursday, January 23d, at 11 o'clock a.m. WELTON ELLIOTT, age 2 years, 10 months and 27 days, eldest son of J.A. and Annie E. ELLIOTT. The funeral will take place this (Friday) evening at 4 o'clock, from the residence of his father, No. 174 Chapel street. Friends and acquaintances are invited to attend.
