March 10, 1873 Death from the Result of an Accident On Thursday evening NICHOLAS FORTUNE, an employee of the bakery establishment of Mr. Mules, of Portsmouth, while practicing on a trapeze in the bakery, fell to the ground, striking his head and fracturing the skull.
He was carried to his home in the city, and on Saturday morning died from the effects of his injuries.
The deceased was a young man, formerly a member of the old Volunteer Fire Department and was well known.

March 5, 1873 Death of Captain Balls -- Captain ROBERT M. BALLS died at his residence on Brewer street, on the night of the 3d instant, at the age of 54 years. He was a member of the Howard Association in 1855, during the prevalence of the yellow fever, and in the language of the President of the Association, was one of the most efficient workers of them all, never wearing of well doing.
A stroke of paralysis in 1869 put an end to his usefulness, and since then he has been comparatively overlooked in the busy and changing scenes of active life; but the members of the Howard Association and many of our people will remember how zealously he labored for his fellows during the ravages of the plague in 1855.
He will be buried this afternoon at 4 o'clock, from Christ church, and will be followed to his last resting place by the affectionate regrets of the community.

March 5, 1873 At his residence at Staunton Va. Sunday night February 23d of idiopathic erysipelas, WILLIAM M. KEELING WOODHOUSE, age [unknown] formerly of Princess Anne County.

June 9, 1873 - A man killed -- about 11 o'clock on Saturday morning, Mr. WILLIAM ELLIS, an old and respected citizen of Norfolk county, and who resided about seven miles from the city on the Ocean View road, while driving down Church street with a load of peas, was thrown from his wagon at the intersection of Church and Charlotte streets, and mortally wounded.
The wagon was crossing the plank culvert under the street railway, and one of the wheels-slipping off the end of the planks fell a foot or more, throwing him out upon the pavement, his head striking a pile of loose stones, and rendering him insensible.
He was immediately picked up and conveyed into the store of Mr. J. W. Grimsthead, on the corner and afterwards to the residence of that gentleman.
Drs. Townsend, Baylor and Young were summoned, but could do nothing for the relief of the injured man, who skull was badly fractured, and who, without having been at all conscious from the time of the accident, died about two o'clock in the afternoon.
His remains were taken in charge by his son-in-law, Mr. Hillary Land, by whom they were conveyed to his residence, for interment yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Ellis had just entered his 89th year, was a soldier of 1812, for which service he was pensioned by the United States until its withdrawal on the breaking out of the war between the States.
He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and by his deportment showed himself a consistent Christian.

July 10, 1873 - Horrible Accident - At a late hour Tuesday night we ascertained that a terrible accident had occurred about 6 o'clock, at the house of Mr. Williamson, near the Whithe Rock, at the southern extremity of Main Street, the particulars of which, as near as we could learn, are as follows: Two young men, JOHN T. MERRIMAN and James S. Diamond, board at Mr. Williamson's, and employed at the foundry of Mr. Frank B. Deane, Jr., have been in the habit of amusing themselves by playing with sticks and an old gun which they found on the premises.
Last night, while engaged in their usual sport -- Merriman with a stick in his hand, and Diamond with the old gun, which was not supposed to be loaded -- the gun was unexpectedly discharged, the load entering the mouth of Mr. Merriman, killing him almost instantly.
He survived a few moments, but never spoke.
As soon as Diamond saw the result of the unexpected shot, he went to the police office and surrendered himself to the authorities.
He was locked up to await the decision of the Coroner's inquest, which will be held this morning.
In the meantime the body of his unfortunate friend remains untouched at the house of Mr. Williamson.
Merriman and Diamond are both young men, and recently came here from Richmond. They are said to have been on the most intimate terms and are represented as sober and industrious men. Lynchburg News
