December 31, 1876 - Death of Dr. R.H. HARRIS -- Our community will be deeply pained this morning to learn of the death of this highly esteemed and accomplished gentleman and skillful physician, who departed this life at the residence of is father, Dr. W.J. Harris, in Nottoway county on Thursday last, the 28th inst. Dr. Harris was for a number of years a resident of our city and stood in the first rank in the practice of his profession. As a man he was widely known and warmly esteemed for his many excellent traits of character. Kind of heart, generous to a fault, he was ever ready to do a service to his fellow man. Many of the poor of our city will remember his kind treatment to them, and will shed a tear over his grave. As a Chirstian, he lieved closely to his profession, and leaves behind him, a bright example for others to follow. Hr. H. was only about 29 years of age and his death thuis early in his life of usefulness will be an additional cause of grief to his many friends.

January 18, 1877 - Body Found - Yesterday the body of MR. MICHAEL McMAHON, who has been missed from his home, on Fayette street, since Monday night, was towed in the river near G.W. Beache's ship-building and ironworks, Atlantic City, by a gentleman in a boat, who made it fast to a pile near the shore. It was then brought ashore by Mr. Thomas Lawless, of Portsmouth, and laid on the beach. Israel Butts, Justice of the Peace, was notified and an inquest held over the body, the jury returning a verdict to the effect that the deceased came to his death by drowning. Mr. McMahon was a well known citizen of this city, and had been employed for many years by the Merchants' and Miners' Transportation Company. He was highly respected, being quiet and harmless, and his loss will be felt both by his employees and friends throughout the city. [64 yrs old, funeral was from St. Mary's Catholic Church.]

January 11, 1877 - Death Under Peculiarly Sad Circumstances. - During Christmas week several boys in sport, placed a lot of firecrackers in a barrel under the window of the dormitory of the Wesleyan Female Seminary at Murfreesboro, and set the poppers off. Several of the school girls were very much frightened at the startling report, one of whom, MISS BETTIE ADAMS, of this county, was so shocked by the fright that it completely shattered her nervous system. She continued so ill that her parents were sent for, and on Thursday she had rallied sufficiently to justify the hope that she might be taken home, where the physicians thought that she would be more likely to recover. She arrived with her parents on the cars and was taken to the American House, and although every care was bestowed upon her that the thoughtfulness of kind friends and a skillful physician could suggest, she sank rapidly, and died about two hours after arriving in this city. The proprietors of the American House were unceasing in their attentions to the bereaved family. The deceased young lady's father, Mr. Levy P. Ames, had her remains conveyed to his residence near Churchland, where they will be interred. It has never been our duty to chronicle a more sorrowful occurrence than the death of this young lady, who was stricken down at the seemingly untimely age of 16 years, and in the bloom of youthful ambition. This should be a lesson to the young to remember that in the midst of life we are in death.

January 23, 1877 - Found Dead. An old Negro man, named JORDAN CHUTCHINS, was found dead on last Sunday morning, lying in a ditch at Carrsville, about 250 yards from the railroad track. Our informant stated that no inquest had been held over the body, but it was supposed that he died by violence at the hands of some men of his own race, because he always voted the Democratic ticket. He said some time ago, that the negroes about Carrsville threatened to kill him if he did not vote for the Republicans at the November election.
