January 10, 1893 In Memoriam The death on January 1st, 1893, of Lieutenant WILLIAM NETWON VANSANT, Assistant Constructor, U.S. Navy, is the first occurrence in the inventory of this Club, that calls us together for the solemn purpose of mourning a loss from our ranks. He whose passing away we notw record with sorrow had lived byut a short while in our midst, and was, therefore, intemately known to but a few of us, yet we recognize his death as one of those vigitations which forecebly illustrates to limited human vision how inscrutable is the will of Him in whose hands lie the issues of life and eath. Scarce 24 years old, in the first flush of manhood, beloved by those withwhom his life threw him into association, graduated first in his class in the great schools of his profession in his own country and in Europe and since then standing among the front and flower of that procession, modest of deeanor and courteous of manner, he has been cut down by the Grim Reaper. Resolved by the Merrimac Club, in called meeting assembled: 1. That the death of Lieutenant William N. Vansant is a loss which we deplore for ourselves, for his comrades in his vocation, and above all for his sorrowing family. 2. That these resolutions be spread upon the records of the club and that a copy of the same be forwarded to his family and be published in the daily press of this city. Signed: Floyd Hughes, Geo. W. Taylor, B.W. Baker, Robert W. Tomlin, J. Thomas Peele, and W.W. Studwick, Committee.
