January 7, 1899 Death of a Child At 3:30 o'clock yesterday, afternoon Mr. William A. and Mrs. Mary G. GALLAGHER, of No 54 Wood street, were deprived by death of their infant son, JOSEPH LAWRENCE, aged 9 months and 15 days. The funeral will take place this morning at 10 o'clock from the above residence.

January 5, 1899 Yesterday afternoon at 1:15 o'clock Mrs. EMMA WIGG, relict of the late Major WILLIAM HAZARD WIGG, died at the residence of her son, MR. Samuel P. Wigg, No. 118 Dinwiddie Street. Mrs. Wigg was 74 years of age last New Year's day. She was a sister of the late Admiral Thomas Stevens. U.S.N. and was the last surviving member of the Steven's family. She leaves a son and three daughters -- Miss Meta E. Wigg, Mrs. Edward W. Martin, of New York, and Mrs. Norman Cassell, of this city. Mrs. Wigg was a consistent member of Trinity Episcopal Church. The deceased lady was an ideal mother and an affectionate friend. She possessed in the highest such graces of character as est ornament the life of a model wife, while in her every-day walks she shed a radiance about her which lighted up in a most attractive manner the attractiveness of pure and noble womanhood.

February 11, 1899 Mrs. C. S. STENGLE departed this life yesterday at 7:45 p.m. at the residence of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. Bland, on Liberty street extended. Deceased was 26 years of age, and had resided in Berkley for a number of years, during which time she has won for herself many warm friends. She leaves a husband, Rev. C. I. Stengle; parents Mr. and Mrs. S. Bland, and sister, Mrs. H. V. Baldwin, to mourn their loss.

February 11, 1899 Mr. SETH SMITHSON departed this life yesterday at 4 p.m. at his home on Montlant avenue. Funeral service Sunday, at Berkley Avenue Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Deceased was 20 years of age, and had been declining for some months.

February 14, 1899 Mr. EDWARD HARTT Dead. Police Officer Edward Hart, so well and favorably known to the people of this city, is no more, he having passed beyond this vale of tears yesterday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock, at his residence, No., 436 Henry street, after an illness of a short duration a brief history of the gentleman being published in these columns at the time he was stricken with paralysis, which was the direct cause of his death. The people of Portsmouth will hear of Mr. Hartt's death with regret, as they looked upon him as being just what he was, an honest, faithful, upright conscientious officer and citizen. He served the city well, performing his duties with a steadfastness, promptness and discretion which often brought to him the commendation, and confidence of his associates and the public generally. He was as a citizen highly esteemed for his many manly qualities. He was a devoted husband, an affectionate and indulgent father, and reaching, as he did, near three score years and ten, he was a pleasant companion, a true and loyal friend. He leaves a widow, who is prostrated with grief, and a son and daughter, Mr. John W. Hartt and Mrs. George F. Gwynn. The time of the funeral will be announced tomorrow.

February 14, 1899 Mr. GEORGE W. SAMMONS departed this life at No 140 Bank street Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, after a brief illness from pneumonia, in the 39th year of his age. Mrs. Sammons, who had been telegraphed for, arrived here from Princess Anne, MD, in the afternoon, too late, however, to see her husband before death came. The remains were forwarded to Princess Anne, MD., via the New York, Philadelphia and Norfolk railroad yesterday morning accompanied by the widow.

February 14, 1899 Mr. EDWARD J BARCROFT passed away from earth at his home, No. 605 Church Street, Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, after a protracted illness, aged 54 years. A family survives him. Deceased was a member of Harmony Lodge No. 19, I.O.O.F. The funeral was held from the residence at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. C.W. Pettit, of Cumberland Street, M.E. Church, assisted by Rev. S.C. Hatcher of the Queen street Church. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery.

February 14, 1899 Mrs. SARAH SELIG, relict of the late Mr. F. Selig, died at her home, No 50 Fenchurch street, after several weeks illness in the 70th year of her age. The deceased was the sister of Mr. Moses Frankfurt and the mother of Mrs. A. Adler and Mr. Benjamin Selig, of Norfolk; Mr. Louis Selig, of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Mr. Joseph Selig, all of whom, escept the last named, were with her at the tie of her deamise. Mrs. Selig was a lady of charitable disposition and was never known to turn a deaf ear to the appeal of the deserving poor. Her funeral will be announced later.

February 15, 1899 Deaths: MRS. LAURA SHAFER DEAD - Yesterday, at 12 o'clock, at her residence, No. 228 High Street, [Portsmouth] after a very short illness from congestion of the lungs, Mrs. LARUA G. SHAFER, wife of Mr. Thomas A. Shafer, departed this life. The deceased lady retired Saturday night in her usual good health, but on Sunday morning was seized with a violent chill, which was followed in quick succession by two others. Medical aid was constantly at her bedside, but human skill could devise no means to alleviate the suffering of the patient, who after 7 o'clock Sunday night, became unconscious and remained in that condition up to her death, as mentioned above. Mrs. Shafer was the mother of Mr. Howard J. Shafer, and Mrs. George W. Mooney. She was born in Albemarle county nearly fifty years ago. She came to this city about eighteen months ago with her daughter, Mrs. Mooney, from Staunton, Va. and has since resided with Mr. and Mrs. Mooney. She was a most estimable lady, and her friends and acquaintances unite in singing her praises. The funeral will take place from the residence tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock, and the Rev. W. F. Fisher will conduct the services. The interment will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The following gentlemen will be the pall-bearers; W.C. Nash, John Walton, A. Mahoney, R. Frank Brooks, Captain Frank. T. Tynan, John Thayer, Walter T. Scott and Allen Tyler.

February 15, 1899 Mr. J. J. SULLIVAN fell dead in a store on Church Street last evening about 9 o'clock. Mr. Sullivan was a young man and apparently in excellent health and the cause of his sudden demise is unknown and was a great shock to his friends. He was apparently perfectly well when he entered the house. He was seen to stagger and fall on the floor and inmates of the place hastened to his assistance. It was clearly apparent that something serious was the matter and a physician was hastily summoned. It was useless, however, as the man never spoke and died almost instantly. Coroner Charters was notified and responded promptly. After viewing the body he ordered that it be delivered to Undertaker Oliver to be prepared for burial. The Corner will hold an inquest this morning.. In the meantime, he will investigate the matter, but he has no cause to think that death resulted from other than natural causes. Mr. Sullivan lived on Bermuda street. He was a U.S. Court Messenger and was well thought of by many friends and acquaintances. He leaves a wife and two children. No arrangements for the funeral have as yet been made.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Mr. WM. EAVES, one of Norfolk County's well known truckers, died at his residence on Western Branch, near Churchland, Wednesday night, after a protracted illness in the 37th year of his age. He leaves a wife and several children to mourn their loss. He was a member of Seaside Lodge: K of P., of this city, which body will attend the funeral on Sunday from the Methodist Church in Churchland.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: MRS. CATHERINE T. MAGUIRE, widow of the late Hugh Maguire, died at an early hour yesterday morning, at her residence, No. 132 Lincoln Street, in the 32nd year of her age. mrs. maguire was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Catholic Church.. Her funeral will take place from that church on Sunday.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Mr. JOHN J. SULLIVAN The obesquies of Mr. John J. Sullivan, United States Court Messenger, who died suddenly Tuesday night, were held from St. Mary's Catholic Church at 10 o'clock yesterday morning. Emerald Beneficial Association, of which the deceased was a member, attended the funeral in body. Requiem mass was celebrated by Rev. Father Doherty. The interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers: Messrs. J.V. Kiernan, John Sharply, William F. Long, Richard McLaughlin, B. Wall, William Welch, M.J. Madden and M.T. Cashin.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Mr. P. S. MARCH - [about 80 years of age] All that was mortal of the venerable Mr. P.S. MARCH, formerly of this city, who departed this life in New York Saturday, arrived here at noon yesterday on the Old Dominion Steamer Princess Anne, accompanied by relatives. They were met at the steamer's wharf by friends and escorted to the First Baptist Church, where the funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock p.m. by Rev. E. B. Hatcher, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. Dr. M B. Wharton, of the Freemason Street Baptist Church. The remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers; Col., W.H. Rogers, Messrs. Jos. T. Allyne, T. B. Anderson, C. Billups and Capatin W. E. Taylor.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: T.O. WISE, who passed away from earth on Tuesday night, was held from the residence of his brother, No. 40 Dartmouth street, at 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The following ministers officiated; Rev. W. H. Edwards of Centenary, and Rev. Dr. W.J. Young, of Epworth M.E. Churches and Rev. A.S. Lloyd of St. Luke's Episcopal Church, and Rev. M. B. Wharton D.D. of Freemason St. Baptiist Church. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. Following were the pall-bearers; Messrs. Waverly Berkley, J. W. Cherry, W. A. Mehagin, C.W. Harrell, Fred Fletcher, R. W. Webb, Capt. W. W. Skinner and Henry Totty.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Mr. JESSE BELL - The funeral of Mr. JESSE BELL, who sudden death occurred at his residence No 712 Church Street, Wednesday night, at 11 o'clock, will be held from Emanuel Epsicopal Chapel, Corner of Calvert and Wide Streets at 3 o'clock this afternoon and will be attended by Lafaytette Lodge, No 9, I.O.O.F., and the School Board, of which the deceased was a member. The City Hall flag is at half mast in respect to his memory.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Mr. FRANK JONES, the remains of Mr. Frank Jones, who died in this city several days ago, have been forwarded to Nansemond county for interment.

February 17, 1899 Deaths: Dr. E.L. BAKER, died at his residence near Great Bridge, Norfolk Co., Wednesday, aged 50 years. His remains have been forwarded to Syracuse, N.Y., for interment.
